Are you a
Teacher
How does your innovation currently get kids (or how might it get kids) engaged in physical activity? How would your idea or project potentially be implemented during the school day?
This will, not only get kids engaged in physical activity, but also motivate them to perform better in their respective classes. It would be implemented during our extended 4th period, which runs from approx. 12 p.m. to 1:40 p.m.. We would allow for the regular class time and then split the students up at 1 p.m. to participate in, either tutoring, or football (sport specific) based physical activity, depending on each students specific needs. The program will consist of three sport specific conditioning days (Mon, Wed, and Thurs), one nutrition day (Tues), and a non competitive and competitive game day (Fri).
(1) The conditioning days (Mon, Wed, and Thurs) will be moderate conditioning, using specific skills from the sport being performed.
(2) The nutrition days (Tues) will provide the students with a base of knowledge on how to eat a healthier diet with the possibility to implement days in which a chef would come in to show them how to prepare certain easy, affordable, and healthy dishes themselves.
(3) Non-competitive and competitive game days (Fri) will allow the students to choose what level they would like to participate in and allow them to participate in actual game situations.

Growing Minds and Muscles
How many children does this program currently or plan to serve? How much time does each child spend daily/weekly engaged in physical activity? (150 words max)
This pilot program is intended to involve the entire 9th grade class with the possibility of expanding it to the entire school depending on its effectiveness. Each student depending on availability will be engaged in a minimum of 160 minutes of physical activity along with a 40 min nutrition class each week, on top of their regularly scheduled physical education classes.

Tell us the story behind the social innovator. (150 words max)
Being a teacher for nearly eight years in the Bronx, NY and currently College Park, GA I have seen a scary trend of teenage obesity and lack of physical activity. This has grown in the past few years from a problem worth look at to an epidemic in need of action. We as educators need to take the first step in ensuring that our students, not only achieve academically, but also gain the knowledge to live a healthy and physically active lifestyle.
