Every Student Participates Now (ESPN) in PE
Location
The concept behind Every Student Participates Now in PE is to get every student to realize how important the lessons they learn in PE can be for their lives. The students are placed in groups of four to five students. Each of the groups are given a list of warm-up activities, strength development activities, aerobic activities and cool-down activities. Using the list of activities for each of the groups the students are to put together a conditioning program that they will present to everyone in PE. The following guidelines are used for each of the activities:
Warm-Up: At the beginning of your workout do at least 3 warm-up exercises. Move easily at first and slowly get faster. Hold a stretch for 10 slow counts and do not bounce. Be sure to do exercises for the upper body and the legs. Ex: jumping jacks, side bends, arm circles, trunk twist
Strenght Development Activities: Do at least 3 strength exercises. Do as many of each exercise you can up to 20. Ex: sit-ups, push-ups, lunges
Aerobic Activities: Begin with 2 - 5 minutes of your activity and gradually increase the time to 25 - 30 minutes. Ex: jogging, jumping rope
Cool-down activities: Do 3 activities from the list or your own favorites. Be sure to stretch upper and lower body and trunk. Ex: calf stretch, thigh stretch, arm/shoulder stretch, arm/side stretch
Once the students put together their program, the program is submitted to the teacher two days prior to presentation along with a list of songs they would like to play during the presentation.
By giving students a choice in what activities they are doing in PE, the students are more likely to participate. This allows all students the opportunity to be an active part in developing quality lessons. This also allows the students the opportunity to establish a routine of developing a conditioning program that they can use at home as well as at school.
