Toonie Tueday and Daycare Service

Location

Courtenay
Canada

Due to the fact that we are seeing a steady increase of youth and single parent adults (15-29) and their young children attending 12 step programs offered at our facility; we need to provide alternatives to quick fix, non-nutritious meals. Toonies Tueasday is a 10 item menu that offers just that for a cost of $2.00 per item.
The noon hour child minding is in increasing demand as the meeting room spaces do not accommodate children and their nature to be active! Many single parents are unable to attend evening meetings due to the needs of their children, however the noon hour meeting is a great way for them to seek the support they required; having an area for their children to play, read, socialize together is not available by any other service or facility in our community. We have a common area that hosts a tv/vcr, childrens reading material and activites. We have also joined with the church facility next door to us that has a daycare area already set up for smaller children, etc. Meetings must be inclusive and not restrict parents from attending - our service allows recovery to happen and families to be successful.

We will continue to develop interaction with our College and High School programs to provide practicum hours for ECE students and those involved in the child care field.

Reason:

Due to cutbacks and United Way changes this service was eliminated in 2011 as a very serious loss to folks on fixed incomes, etc. Generally the younger families were impacted the most.
