What is Geotourism?

Geotourism is defined as, ''tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place - its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage and the well-being of its residents."

Do you have any examples of effective and innovative geotourism initiatives happening locally or at travel destinations you've visited?

Hello Everyone,

I've added the list of 13 geotourism principles to the group as a resource for all those who are interested.  Have a look and gain a better understanding of what geotourism is all about.

Thanks for adding the resource. In addition to giving us a better geotourism understanding, supporting and planning with these principles in mind, can put you on the map.

An example of this would be how the Center for Sustainable Destinations' highlight geotourist locations through their map guides and on their website (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/sustainable/impact_map.html).

Since its definition and practice, Geotourism provides an exciting new way of operating, marketing, selecting travel destinations and seeing our place in the world around us.

There is some global confusion about geotourism since there are competiting definitions in the United States and Australia. My question is about the history and application - how did the terms develop independently?

hi,geotourism was geology and tourism(1997,Kmoddo).Then,it  was defined by Hose(1995):

“The provision of interpretative facilities and services to enable tourists to acquire knowledge and understanding of the geology and geomorphology of a site (including its contribution to the development of the Earth sciences) beyond the level of mere aesthetic appreciation"

in 2006,another definition by Dowling and Newsome:“In our definition of geotourism the ‘geo’part pertains to geology and geomorphology and the natural resources of landscape, landforms, fossil beds, rocks and minerals, with an emphasis on appreciating the processes that are creating and created such features.

but until now no consensus on common definition

in USA,you the story of National Geographic definition

the story of geotourism started with the desire to minimized the effetcts of mass tourism.it was related to the advent of the sustainable tourism.geottourism was undefined until the early of 1990.In 1990s, it is started as an clear  extension of tourism.but until thatcalled geology and tourism,as Komoo(1997) described it.then,it was appeared as stand -alone form of tourism after the recognition of the imoportance of the geomorphological fetaures in the tourism attractions.many arguments support the opinion that it derived from the ecotourism.on the other hand ,National geographic and UNESCO, contributed in developing geotourism industry(geological, geographical aspects).in 2002.United Nations(UN) set “2002 as the international year of ecotourism,culture-based tourism,nature-based tourism, heritage tourism, adeventure tourism and geotourism are all important components of sutainable tourism.
