Hi Libby,
I loved reading about Jr. Iron Chef and how Burlington School Food Project and VT Food Education Every Day have collaborated to make it a success. You mention that Jr. Iron Chef is being looking at a national model and I'd love to hear what steps you're taking to help other organizations adapt it to their districts.
Thanks!
Alexis

Hi Alexis,

Thanks for the good question. We've been excited to share the Jr. Iron Chef VT model in several ways over the last couple years. Most recently and proactively was at the National Farm to School Conference in Detroit, Michigan, which several of the Jr. Iron Chef Team attended. Abbie Nelson, director of VT FEED, did a workshop at the conference sharing the model, our process, and our learnings. We developed a two-page "Getting Started" reference and a powerpoint, which we shared both at the conference as well as with other interested groups. On the more responsive side, we've also spent time on the phone with eager Farm to School activists from Chicago to Hawaii ready to start a competition of their own.

Thanks again for your thoughtful question.

Warmly,

Libby

On May 27, 2010 the judges reviewed the entries for the Changemakers Revelation to Action: Your Place. Your Idea. Your Change. competition and would like to pass on the following feedback (listed below) for your entry. Thank you for applying and for your hard work in the field. We are excited to archive your entry to serve as a leading solution for the worldwide community of innovators. We wish you continued luck with your innovative, sustainable, and socially impactful initiatives.

All the best, The Changemakers Team

“I had a chance to observe this initiative in action and it was astonishing! I loved how it includes children from various communities and from all types of schools. Children come together to cook local seasonal ingredients, and I think it makes a huge impression on them. It’s very smart to take something out of popular culture and use it for a strong political and pedagogical expression. This initiative can happen anywhere and seems remarkably easy to market as well.”

“I thought it was a really strong idea in terms of innovation and sustainable impact. This is very scalable too and it manages to cover a large range of important topics, from hunger and nutrition to careers.”

Thanks, Mohenna! We are honored to be among this wonderful group of finalists. It is great to hear that one of the judges was able to attend. We certainly agree that it is quite a site to see and the students, coaches, and Farm to School supporters are inspirational to all of us.

Good job Libby and Team! A wonderful idea and program. Kids everywhere can learn about healthy cooking and eating. Jr. Iron Chef is a wonderful way for kids to learn to cook more than grilled-cheese sandwiches and microwavable items. I will definitely follow-up on any previous workshops highlighting the model and catch up on current successes. Thanks for sharing!
