Hi Mary,
It sounds like you put on a very successful event each year and I'd love to hear more about its impact on the community and how you see WaterFire evolving over the next ten years.
Thanks!
Alexis
WaterFire's impact on the community can be measured in a myriad of wonderful ways that are both tangible and abstract. Its impact can be found in the touching and highly personal notes that visitors to WaterFire leave behind in our comment books or on dedication cards at the event; in the memorable stories they have carefully composed and graciously shared with us via email; in the fact that at this free outdoor event - where the crowds can number in the tens of thousands - there is never any discord or raucous behavior; in the way it has brought together a family of dedicated volunteers who wholeheartedly give of their time and their spirit to create something amazing for their fellow citizens; in the way that it has given Rhode Islander's a life-affirming, visual symbol of all that is possible when people believe in the power of public art to change our urban environment; in the crowded hotels and restaurants that are filled to capacity on WaterFire nights and thus contributing to the economic success of the region; in the excitement of our fans as they wait with baited breath for the release of the season schedule year after year; in the eyes of a little girl who gets to stand steps away from a beautiful opera diva singing a live performance at the river or the little boy mesmerized by the musicians on our live jazz stage. These are but a few of the diverse ways that WaterFire impacts our community, and there are an infinite number of fantastic stories that can attest to them all. We believe that WaterFire enables people to create a dynamic collection of experiences and that together, those experiences symbolize WaterFire's greatest accomplishments within the community. (You can find a sampling of these stories at www.waterfire.org/my.story)
Over the next ten years, we would love to see WaterFire grow to become an official showcase for all the incredible arts and cultural offerings in this state. We envision a series of artist residencies, live music and performance collaborations, and an outstanding summer-long celebration of the arts in Rhode Island. We’re celebrating our 15th Anniversary season this year and we are excited about the possibilities in the decade to come! It’s a great time to be in The Creative Capital and we’d like to play an even larger role in bringing exceptional art, music, light and life to the city of Providence.
