Brown Refugee Youth Tutoring and Enrichment (BRYTE) is a student-led organization that runs in collaboration with the International Institute of Rhode Island and the Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University. Through BRYTE, Brown students tutor and mentor students in refugee families that have recently relocated to Providence. Volunteers spend time mainly on tutoring (homework help, literacy skills, English skills), but they also do activities with the students that helps build their comfort level in Providence and feel at home here
Reason:
BRYTE fosters long-term relationships and bi-directional learning – supporting refugees through the resettlement process and while helping students build connections and understanding. BRYTE capitalizes on the unique skills and position of university students to provide a needed support to an underserved population. Our work helps the refugee population develop cultural competency and confidence as well as vital language skills. Refugee families share their respective experiences and cultures with Brown students, opening their eyes to realities very different from their own; refugees gain the skills and confidence necessary to succeed. BRYTE’s provides vital support with more than 120 mentor/mentee pairs after just three years.
