The Real Food Challenge “harnesses the power of universities and youth to build a healthy, fair and green food economy.“ Comprised of thousands of students on hundreds of campuses—including heavy representation in New England—the Real Food Challenge (RFC) is working to get colleges and universities to invest $1 billion of their (collective) food-dollars in community based and ecologically sound food enterprises and farms. The RFC empowers students while it supports vibrant local businesses, small- and mid-size farmers, and local workers.

Reason:
As director of the Social Innovation Initiative at Brown University, I work with dozens of incredible young social change leaders and entrepreneurs each year. David Schwartz and the Real Food Challenge are clear standouts, both in terms of passion and innovative strategy. David co-founded this organization as a student and in just two short years, The Real Food Challenge has emerged a national leader in the field of sustainable food systems and youth leadership. It’s a brilliant strategy--they combine community organizing with social entrepreneurship, shifting markets while they educating young people! They’ve generated quite a buzz and are having a real economic impact on communities and businesses throughout the region.
