The mission of Sustainable Flatbush is to organize neighborhood Sustainable Flatbush brings neighbors together to learn, advocate and organize for sustainable living in our Brooklyn neighborhood in our four program areas: livable streets, urban gardening and farming, energy efficiency and zero waste. Our vision of a sustainable neighborhood includes energy efficient homes, businesses and apartment buildings and local implementation of renewable energy such as solar; and plentiful public open spaces.

Reason:
In three short years, and with annual budgets of less than $5000, Sustainable Flatbush has mobilized diverse communities to promote livable streets and lower traffic congestion, open public space and urban agriculture, waste reduction and energy efficiency. SF has reached thousands of people in one of the most diverse communities in the US with home energy savings and solar power, pedestrian and bike routes, community gardens and access to healthy food, and solid waste reduction through electronic recycling events, swap meets and composting education. SF is a visionary organization and is making a real impact.
