On Vermont Green Up Day thousands of volunteers of all ages and walks of life join together in their communities statewide for a massive spring clean up of litter from roadsides and public places, for the community of Vermont. First launched by our Governor in 1970, our Interstate Highways were closed to traffic for clean up! Now a unique tradition celebrating its 40th Anniversary, Vermont Green Up Day continues annually, the first Saturday in May. The non-profit organization Green Up Vermont holds responsibility for organizing this event.
Reason:
A one-of-a-kind 40 year grass roots tradition, no other Vermont “good cause” enjoys the breadth and depth of community involvement and respect as Green Up Day. Others noticing its effectiveness include Ohio Adopt-A-Highway Director, stating at a conference his desire to do it there, noting the community spirit factor (Vermont is the only state without AAH). Albania discovered us (peace corps volunteer via internet) and is initiating “Green Up Albania.” Green Up’s focuses include children, educating by experience to shape good behavior.
