Hi Drusila:
Your idea is a good one. I would love for you to explain who would organize and scale up your idea and what their backgrounds are- ie. who would be the trainers and what credentials do they have? Have you had any successful partnerships with Universities- either locally or abroad?
Would the training be in-depth in specific areas? If so, which ones? How many months of the year would these trainings run (weekly, monthly, or throughout the year)?
I would love to get a better understanding of the scope of your organization and plans to scale this innovation out.
Best of luck!
Thank you so much for your response Bahiya. Please find below the various responses to your comments/ enquiries
Organisation and Scaling
The pilot project will be chaired by Mrs Elizabeth Villars and well seasoned Business woman, Former President of Association of Ghanaian Industries and a very influential person in the Ghanaian business society and government policy.
I intend to be the National Coordinator/ Executive Director. I have an MBA in Project Management, 6 years experience in various capacities including Business Development, HR, Fundraising and NGO Administration.
I hope to solicit for other members who are yet to confirm their commitment but these will span from Legal representatives, HR consultants Business Owners, Senior Bank Officials and Microfinance agencies.
TRAINERS
The trainers will be recruitment from these areas also to give a practical and in-depth training to the participants. We hope to recruit consultants who will offer pro bono teaching lessons on practical ways of starting up and remaining competitive within your industry. Mavericks in Ghana’s aim is to help establish and grow/ sustain indigenous business.
In the short term, I hope to liaise with my school GIMPA Business School for affiliated certificates and assistance with the curriculum. However in the long term i hope to gain partnership with any international Business School such as University of Columbia on expanding or updating the curriculum.
THE PROGRAM
We will offer the practical side of Business and Strategic Management required for a start up. This will include Business Plans and Financials, Petty Cash Management, Legal Contracts, Recruitment, as well as Personal and Time Management. It is believed that being graduates these participants must have had the basic level of education in their 2nd cycle or 3rd cycle school.
A typical Budding Maverick Program will last 10 weeks on week ends and/ or evening classes offered twice in a year from March to June and August to November.
There will also be refresher courses in the form of half day, full days and two day work shops to cover certain area such as networking, etiquette, building confidence etc
At the end of each module interim assessments will be performed and recorded. The final project will be to be able to complete their Business Plans of which the Board will review and select 5 best students to provide some start up grants for them.
MONITORING AND EVALUATION
The medium term will be to create a Mavericks Club where the graduates are assisted with acquiring capital to start, in the form of loans, equity or grants. They will be monitored by their Guardians (assigned to each participant) and a Management Consultant to help address the on going business issues such as quality control, default payment tec.
IMPACT ASSESMENT
We believe that the impact of this project is measurable by:
The number of participants who fully complete training
Participants who go on to start their business, the number of employees and turnover
How many Businesses are still standing after 3 years, 6 years and 10 years?
Total number of employment derived from the Project.
Total amount of capitals granted from this scheme
The apex being how many have been able to attain national or international achievement such as Ghana Club 100
EXPANSION
The impact assessment will help to determine the pace of expansion into other regions.
We hope to use an oil-stain approach: start small expand and then move on to a new region. We hope to reach 3 or 4 regions in 5-10 years : Greater Accra, Takoradi, Kumasi and Tamale
