¿Qué es lo que hace que tu idea sea única?

The objective of Agencia Mandalla DHSA is to promote social transformation via democratization of knowledge: “building capacity for rural people to produce and educating the city to consume”. For that, Mandalla researches and disseminates alternative technologies to income generation, employment, and food security to family agricultures. The success of the Mandalla System is its surprising production capacity, using small piece of land and little water resources. The cultivated area is divided in nine plots around a water reservoir, from where irrigation system starts. In the reservoir, fish, ducks and wild ducks live and fertilize the water for the farmed areas. Simple instruments, adapted to the farmer reality, are employed, such as cotton sticks to make water micro-aspersion. Small animals such as goats, chickens and rabbits inhabit a common area, in an interactive system in which the needs of ones are supplied by the products of others. For instance, the chicken supplies manure and plow the soil while feeding from plague herbs. Besides, they are complementary sources of meat, milk and byproducts for the families. ¿Qué impacto has tenido?

More that 30 years of research and planning of the Ashoka Fellow Willy Pessoa produced the knowledge that resulted on the foundation of Agencia Mandalla. He was supported by a multi-disciplinary team of social entrepreneurs that are disseminating information and reaching social change in rural settlements, indigenous villages, quilombola communities, rural communities and suburban areas. In the last six years, we implanted 2,500 mandallas in 18 states of Brazil, representing approximately 3,500 families. This experience reinforces the expansion capacity of this project, and proves its efficiency in generating social transformation. Our main social and environmental impact indicators are quantitatively demonstrated, such as 5,000 direct jobs created and the average monthly family income ranging from R$ 350.00 to R$ 2,000.00. Besides, other qualitative indicators are: food security for families, family consumption power increased, eradication of under-nutrition and lack of hygiene typical diseases, ecological consciousness among social diffusers (multiplier agents), and local economy boost. Because of all that, we transform the family agriculture into a business that is economically viable, socially responsible and environmentally sustainable.

Describe los problemas principales que ha trabajado tu proyecto.

One third of the Brazilian population lives in the rural area, including small municipalities. According to IBGE (National Statistics Bureau), Brazilian family agriculture represents 85.2% of the total farming properties, and is responsible for 37.9% of the gross national agro-cattle production (value). These figures show the socio-economic importance of family agriculture for Brazil. However, existent and persistent problems in the sector show a trend to the aggravation of this situation in the near future.
In this context, family agriculture figures are a integral part of local development. To consolidate this segment becomes a central strategic issue, given its capacity of employment creation, income generation and food supply. Besides, it is a fundamental element to rebuild citizenship amongst the rural population. (continues in the coments)

Describe los pasos que tu organización ha dado para que el proyecto tenga éxito

Agência Mandalla DHSA is a citizen sector organization (for public interest) created in January,, 2003, in the State of Paraiba, which the aims of disseminating the innovative concept of development generated throughout more than 30 years of research of Willy Pessoa.
Using a systemic vision and combining traditional and scientific knowledge, Mr. Pessoa created a new way of production that integrates the people and the environment. This concept became a development methodology that is popularly known as Mandalla Project.
The creation of Agencia Mandalla was a result of a need to consolidate this practice in a institution, as the Projeto Mandalla was already producing social change in the communities where it was applied.

¿Qué necesitas para que tu proyecto tenga éxito durante los próximos tres años? Éxito en el año 1:

This year, our work is reaching national scale by the dissemination of Mandalla to projects that deal with youth entrepreneurship initiatives, focusing on sustainable enterprises. At the end of the capacity building program, small business are incubated and the model with be consolidated and validated. In a year time, results will be visible and the model will be re-applied all over Brazil, as a public polity for the youth.

Éxito en el año 2:

The consolidation of our commercialization model will propitiate a sustainable business model for Mandalla, including the diffusers trained by Agencia Mandalla, the rural and urban families trained and supported by our activities and the consumer market in the cities. A technical assistance program ensures that products traded under the Mandalla brand (seal) will reach the markets (identified by the social franchise group) with quality and at a fair price, lower or equal to the agro-products that use chemicals.

Éxito en el año 3:

The consolidation of our activities outside Brazil. Today we are in American countries such as Venezuela, Paraguay, Haiti, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Colômbia, and in Africa, in Mozambique and Malawi. The international diffusion enhances our action both in quantity and in quality, as well as the impact and visibility. We believe that the Mandalla methodology is one of the possible solutions to very different realities.

¿Tienes un plan de negocios o plan estratégico?

Yes. We have two, both developed in programs of the Ashoka-McKinsey partnership, in 2006&2009.

¿Cuáles son las tres acciones más importantes y necesarias para hacer crecer su organización o iniciativa? Paso 1:

In 2005, the launch of the first Mandalla Unicenter, a planning, research and diffusion center for social technologies. This pioneers initiative is an instrument to train diffusers for the Mandalla project, with operational capacity to graduate six classes of 36 diffuser every year. The idea is to maintain this structure active.

Paso 2:

Launch of Teia Mandalla (Mandalla Net), a management tool of Mandalla Social Franchise and the creation of Mandalla Portal, to disseminate and publicize our activities and the group of future Mandalla franchisees. The current Portal has more than 45,000 access a month, and generated 36,000 contact of individuals and companies in Brazil and abroad, who are interested in partnership with Agencia Mandalla.

Paso 3:

The launch of Mandalla product brand, for ecological and socially responsible food. The objective is to create a conceptual brand to trade all products generated by Mandalla franchisees. This initiative represents the final tie towards Agencia Mandalla self-sustainability in the next five years.

Describe los resultados esperados de estas acciones.

The creation of the Mandall Unicenter – Mandalla Open University Center was a pioneer initiative in Brazil. It is the first research, development and diffusion center for social technologies in the country. It is a reference center to form Diffusers of Mandalla Development Methodology. It applies all social technologies developed. The Mandalla Net combines all management instruments into an online environment that propitiates a significant growth in the reach of our initiatives, as well as efficiency and effectiveness in the management processes. It also allows real time information on our activities. The Mandalla brand will enhance the self-sustainability of this model. We will commercialize products under the Mandalla brand, with a quality seal and also a social dimension, so that the purchase is also a social responsible action.

¿Cuál fue el momento decisivo que llevó a esta innovación?

The idea of the Mandalla Integrated Production System was developed in the lifetime of its creator, Mr. Willy Pessoa. During 30 years of research, Mr. Pessoa wanted to develop a action multiplier model whose objective would be the facilitation of capacity building process and improvement of human development indexes, via an interactive and integrative balance between the different stakeholders that play a role in the local municipality. The initiative would take advantage of the potential productive capacity in the environment, the best use of land and water to produce quality food, productivity, social responsibility, and the active exercise of citizenship, thus contributing to balance the improvements in life quality, economic productivity and environmental equilibrium. A social technology developed for agriculture families make a tangible outcome of his initial idea that the correct use of natural resources would make possible income generation, job creation, natural food production which no waste to the farmers and their families. The appropriate adaptation of technologies to become low cost, easy to handle and accessible involve the families of small agro-producers, generating a growing integration and participation of these groups with neighboring farm families. From this conceptual idea, the Mandalla Integrated Production System was created, inspired too in the idea of harmony and equilibrium of the Solar System.

Cuéntanos sobre los innovadores sociales detrás de esta idea innovadora

Willy Pessoa grew up at the city of Cuité, countryside of Paraíba State. Since his youth his experienced the existing problems of rural cities and the consequent migration to urban areas. His education follow the ideas of honesty and modesty to the others. In this infancy he was very active and played street games, when he already showed signed of creativity and imagination to change rules: “I invented a system using three pencils tied together which help you fulfill you notebooks quicker”.At clergy school, we reflected on agriculture for the first time. He questioned why people needed so much land to plant and start dreaming about what could be achieved by maximizing the use of land in small plots. It was a long path from the military service to jobs as consultant, public officer, physical educator, and constructor. In 2001, after 30 years of research, he inaugurated this most important invention: an integrated farming system, named Mandalla. After two years, Mr. Pessoa dedicated exclusively to the projects, jointly with his sons, Tárcio and Wilmar, who were still at the university. They founded Agência Mandalla DHSA (Holistic, Systemic and Environmental Development) with the aims of using technology to fight against rural migration: “the big problem of hunger and poverty in Brazil is the lack of access to information”. They persevered and in 2003, Willy became an Ashoka Fellow in Brazil.

¿Cómo planeas hacer para que tu proyecto sea innovador?

The Mandalla Production technology offers a solution to Brazilian social problems, such a such as growing rural migration to outskirts of urban areas, economic stagnation of small municipalities that live out of retirement payments or social assistance programs, and the under-nutrition caused by lack of access to basic food supply. The idea is to keep rural families in their rural farms by channeling the required information to make a rational use of their natural resources: water and soil, and employing appropriate technologies that combine scientific and popular (traditional) knowledge. A young, multi-disciplinary team has successfully expanded the Mandalla concept of development manages the activities. In six years, we assisted 150 rural and urban communities in 13 stats of Brazil, directly implementing more than 1,000 Mandallas and hundreds of other social technologies, which represent a direct benefit for 2,500 families in terms of accessing healthy food and generating monthly income ranging from R$ 350.00 and R$ 2,000.00.
