What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?

- Increase awareness of our message and brand
- Increase our market
- Develop additional tools

Your project

Project Support

Need #1

Consumer/Audience Acquisition

Need #2

Digital Marketing Strategy

Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!

Since Feeleez is already generating sales the goal is to increase the market penetration of Feeleez .

We need to increase brand awareness. Feeleez branding has already been well received by Ashoka, educators, therapists, parents and others but increasing awareness is crucial.

We need to establish channel/distribution partners to introduce not only our mission but also our product.

We need to develop a more enhanced digital market presence through additional search engine optimization.

We need to expand into other, more defined, markets. Feeleez is a small business, and thus far our focus has been on local and internet sales.

Also, our project is in great need of consulting help, especially with regard to developing a SWOT analysis for the company. Aid of this sort will allow us to better understand the market in which we play.

There is a need for Feeleez in both the marketplace and the social structure of our community so once consumers become aware of our product they are excited to forge a relationship with Feeleez. In this light our challenge is simply to make our mission and our product better known and profound social impact develops from there.

What three characteristics or qualities do you prioritize in working relationships/partnerships?

1.

Communication. We strive to be extremely timely, empathetic, and sincere in our communications with our partnerships.

2.

Mission driven. Our message is simple and direct. Supporting children and caregivers in developing empathy is what we do.

3.

Innovative. Our product and aesthetic are unique. We aim to bring this fresh form of emotional education to our partnerships.

Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.

Nathan McTague and I (Natalie Christensen) are the heart and soul of the Feeleez organization. We have created a product, manufactured it, and have sales to show for it. Feeleez is now at a point where we need help taking it to the next level. We consider sales to be the benchmark for success in that regard.

We believe that a focus on the centerpiece of Feeleez- Matching Game, makes the most sense at this point. We have found that the game is often the initial purchase our customers make and that this purchase serves as the bridge to further purchases of additional products and services.

Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.

No, we have not received help from outside consultants before. Our success thus far has been entirely based on word of mouth, social media marketing, and a successful product that fills a need in the marketplace.

Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?

Yes

Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?

Yes

Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?

Yes

Rank your three intended outcomes of this project:

1.

Access to Amex's ability to transform Feeleez by linking into, or creating a strategy for establishing larger distribution.

2.

Benefit from Amex's ability to elevate the level of our brand - i.e. make Feeleez a household name.

3.

Utilize Ashoka and AMEX to help deliver our mission of empathy.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?

Feeleez has been in business for five years. In that time we have developed five potent products, a website, two social media blogs, and a system of emotional support for caregivers by way of coaching, consulting, courses, and community. We sell to accounts and customers throughout the United States and Canada and receive requests for distribution in Europe almost weekly. We have sold over four thousand empathy games alone which are shared with innumerable children via parents, therapists, teachers, and social workers.

Each time a child is offered the chance to play the Feeleez Empathy Game they are being offered the opportunity to be heard, to develop emotionally, and to establish a sense of empathy for others. We believe that the impact of greater empathy in the world is priceless.

What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?

Receiving professional support from American Express would have a great impact on our company and on the world at large. Feeleez would use this support to grow our audience and penetrate further markets. This not only makes a difference to the bottom line of our company, (increasing our sales many times over), but to the social community in general. For each game purchased by a parent, or teacher, there are many children that have access to that game. The game symbolizes the opportunity to develop emotionally. This increased emotional awareness and sense of empathy is then shared with that child's circle - including children on the playground, adults in their neighborhood, and members of their family. Empathy is the antidote to aggression and bullying, and the foundation for peace.

The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?

According to a World Bank global health status report, malnutrition is the most pressing health problem implicated in the deaths of 20,000 children worldwide everyday & adversely affects the physical/cognitive development of generations of children. The communities are unable to migrate from nutritional dependency to independence & few health initiatives (supplementation/ nutrition programs in public health facilities) reach them. The consequential failure to tackle Malnutrition places it as a common underlying factor that continues to derail the achievement of all the 8 MDGs.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

Eureka Nutritional solutions provide solutions to micro-nutrient malnutrition. Fortifying staple flours for over 300 million children & young women who are limited by expense & imprecision to access Iron, Vitamin A & Zinc is our mission. We manufacture micro-nutrient rich porridge flour, maize meal flour & a health seasoning premix, avail them to the malnourished through affordable retail distribution in rural areas, low market urban areas and smaller outlets in smaller packs of 250 grams that the majority millions at the BoP can easily access & afford.

The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?

Historically, small-scale fortification efforts have been limited by expense and imprecision; preventing the most vulnerable populations from accessing the benefits of additional vitamins and minerals added to staple food products. This innovation proportionately dispenses nutrients into flour that is affordable, effective and accurate.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.

Staple Food fortification has been endorsed by the 2008 Copenhagen consensus as the least expensive/most reliable approach to address micro-nutrient deficiencies on a larger scale. This strategy works in favor of millions with limited access to centrally processed foods by effectively addressing limitations that prevent fortification efforts from being widely implemented by ensuring this micro-nutrient premix availability in the first instance. It’s coupled with innovative equipment such as the all-important micronutrient fortification facility and product availability in affordable, accessible, reusable economy packs in the most common retail outlets as impactful designs that will eventually lead to nutritional autonomy.
The strategy uses staple flours as delivery vehicles for the critical micronutrients, avail them through affordable retail distribution in rural, low market urban areas in smaller packs of $0.5 that the majority millions in the survival markets can access. The economy packs to the majority who live on $1-2 a day generate low unit margins but profitable volumes to ensure financial growth and scalable

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

ENS has exclusively packaged a new model of nutritious food delivery which is not offered by any of peers & competitors who generally offer only a direct service. There are ventures that sales staple food - for example, liberty Food, & Rose allied - but these services typically target urban sector. However, as a core team of diverse individuals, each one bringing unique&complementary skills&experiences to the table, this combination of talent, expertise, high tolerance for ambiguity dedication & determination to impact on the communities we serve & ability to take risks & experiment with new ideas are our greatest strengths

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.

ENS began within Rainbow Gate Foundation in 2012 in response to the enormous gap between the health care systems in Nigeria. Interested in looking at sustainable preventative health care strategies, ENS’s initiator learned that micronutrient health was the basic building block on which rests everything from a child’s ability to resist HIV to a country’s ability to migrate from economic dependency to independence. Yet the most vulnerable people would never see vitamins and minerals in their lifetime, no matter what happened. Few health initiatives, such supplementation and nutrition programming would be able to reach them. The solution became clear: a strategy that would reach these most at-risk populations and provide them with the benefits of critically missing vitamins and minerals that other populations had access to. Making this solution a reality would have an enormous impact.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?

Since inception in 2012, we’ve Each day gotten closer to reaching our goal of reducing widespread Iron deficiency anemia, vitamin A, zinc,& folic acid deficiencies among millions of children & young women.
-We’ve contracted 200 farmers through their cooperatives to produce grain amaranth, moringa oleifera & mushroom.
-Introduced a new micro-nutrient packed seasoning premix with numerous health benefits packaged in 50g reusable dispensation bottles/100g sachets used to season any food just like with iodized salt.
- Installed an-all-important micro-nutrient fortification facility that proportionally dispenses micronutrients into flour during processing.
-We've invested a total of $5,000 in the enterprise.
- Advanced to raise further capital through the Prestigious 2013 Echoing Green Fellowship and striving to raise further capital through the Ashoka Changemaker.

What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?

The long-term impact of this project are to:
1. Produce a device that allows for effective, affordable, and sustainable production of a fortified product at small, local mills that is nutritionally adequate for the target population.
2. Reduce the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in the target population resulting in decreased rates of maternal and infant mortality, childhood blindness, infection, diarrhea, mental retardation, and lead to increased energy, school attendance, worker productivity and economic development.
Small-scale fortification promises to be one of the most significant break-through technologies in reaching rural and most at-risk populations.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?

The simplicity and adaptability of the current procedure would likely rule out any insurmountable challenges. This has proven true during the pilot phase in Abeokuta and would likely be the case once scaled-up across Nigeria and other African countries. Lack of attention to the needs and concerns of the community and inability to adapt to and address local concerns would present a challenge to the project's success. Such success, however, will depend largely on the development and adherence to a strong and sustainable business model, which has been designed by ENS.

What is the benefit or value you're creating for your business?

1. A sustainable business model ensuring the product can be manufactured and distributed globally while maintaining feasibility and affordability.
2. Strong in-country, on-the-ground partnerships that will facilitate the integration of the product and the fortified product within the local context, paying close attention to community concerns.
3. Strong support and willingness on the side of local millers to adopt the new technology and community members to purchase the fortified product.

How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?

Funding has been leveraged from local investors to allow seed funding of the projects.
We have a strong internal support that helps us to secure and maintain funding for the initiative. This allows us to staff a small team to manage the overall initiative. We have a supportive team in place that provide strategic guidance and serve as liaisons to important issues throughout the organization.

Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.

Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.

Partnering with an NGO working in the community where the product will be used and among the population it will serve will be critical for appropriate tailoring of the innovation and acceptance of the fortified product. Such an operational collaboration will allow for the sharing of information regarding markets and bottom line incentives .

What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?

Trustees of Rainbow Gate Foundation have been instrumental in leveraging internal resource for these projects. Times when support has been requested we have been delighted to receive it unconditionally. As our daily chores fill our time, the main push-back will come when major investment is needed, but we plan to fill these gaps by leverage through supportive and institutional funding.

The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?

Many people have great ideas and wonderful dreams but these ideas usually end up in the grave with their bearers. We have to all accept the fact that idea is the most important resource required by entrepreneurs but if not backed up by a sound social bank, these idea will never ever be put to work.
Many people in the developing world end up as potential intrapreneurs due to the high interest rate on borrowing charge by banks and the lack of collateral to secure loans.Moneylenders, payday institutions, and pawnshops offer high rates. These predatory lenders usually loan money at excessively high interest rates, making it extremely difficult for entrepreneurs living below the poverty line to turn their ideas into profitable businesses

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

My solution is to open a social bank that will act as catalyst financing to new great ideas Members need to;
• Have a dream of a business
o Be in need and living below the poverty line
o Create or join a 7-member group of like-minded individuals who want to start or expand their own businesses
o Live in a community with a Branch
o Live close to your group members
o Be the only member of your household applying for membership in the same Group (close relatives such as mother, sister, or in-laws are not allowed but may join another group)
One of the greatest tools for helping people break the cycle of poverty is financial education. I believe that an educated borrower is a successful borrower. Ultimately, forming the habit of saving money takes time to learn. We shall institute a mandatory financial education program for our borrowers to help pave the way for financial success and self-sufficiency.

The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?

This solution is innovative because
We support transparency and dedicate time to teaching borrowers about their micro-loan, interest rate, and repayment commitment. All borrowers will go through an initial 5-day Continuous Group Training (CGT) with their group of seven. The purposes of CGT are to teach basic financial literacy, to open a savings account at a local bank, and to ensure that borrowers understand the loan process as well as the terms of the loan.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.

One of the greatest tools for helping people break the cycle of poverty is financial education. We believe that an educated borrower is a successful borrower. Ultimately, forming the habit of saving money takes time to learn. We have instituted a mandatory financial education program for our borrowers to help pave the way for financial success and self-sufficiency.
Borrowers meet weekly to repay their loan and continue their financial literacy training. In addition to repayments and savings deposits, weekly meetings are spent discussing financial issues brought up by the borrowers. Center Managers act as facilitators for the groups and often manage group discussions. The unique MS group model encourages group discussion and problem-solving. Center Managers have access to local resources for questions outside MS's scope of work
Our primary activity is to create strategic alliances with our local communities.
Each registered member of the bank will be a shall holder

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

MS delivers credit at reasonable interest rates to be an affordable alternative to moneylenders, payday institutions, and pawnshops. These predatory lenders usually loan money at excessively high interest rates, making it extremely difficult for entrepreneurs living below the poverty line to turn their ideas into profitable businesses. With the predatory lenders, you must need the following;
• Current bank account
• Credit history
• Collateral
• Guarantors
But with MS you just need the following
• Have a dream of a business
o Be in need and living below the poverty line
o Create or join a 7-member group of like-minded individuals who want to start or expand their own businesses
o Live in a community with an MS Branch

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

TIME = MONEY
In this world we always hear people saying TIME = MONEY but hardly see because the rich is only enjoying this.
Majority of the educated or we can say highly educated people are also unable to find themselves a reasonable job which can satisfy their qualification or needs.
So to provide a job or can say a business or doing partnerships or joint ventures with not only educated but talented and uneducated people we can try to bring self dependence to almost every individual irrespective of cast, color, gender, age, etc.
Making use of every possible time available and every person either working or unemployed or rejected by society to make a lively hood by his own and make world a better place to live with unity and peace , love and affection ,money and fame.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

It is based on the pooling of talent, time, knowledge, hard word, dedication, human resource, funds, etc as much as possible available and using them to provide the best solution or service or job or what ever the case may be in as much areas as possible.

This is like planning and creating a new world where main focus would be on unemployed people and improving the life and living standards of all the people joining by the way of MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING CUM BUSINESS CUM PROFESSION CUM SERVICING.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

collecting the data of people who are unemployed and providing them to work for a specific area according to their desire and at a designation suitable to them after a short training session and try to gather funds for the company or the needed talent.

Funds collected would be for a service or a product(s) but it would be including a profit or advance as the case may be and after about, say 3 months the investor will be getting the funds given by them back in the form say maybe coupons or gift vouchers or special offers or money back into the bank account (if working with us(full time or part time) doesn't matters)

The funds collected will be used in such a manner that it is seen the minimum fixed obligation is achieved with a surety and the balance would be invested in establishing new business which could be small in size but would be providing the best output and results.
it is a type of both investment and/or partnership as the case maybe.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

Few companies from which the basic plan matches are the general MLM COMPANIES like N-mart,RMP,Amway,Tupperware etc but the way of their working and that of ours Company is totally different and almost every one running legal business from a simple grocery shop to a big business man manufacturing almost every thing would be our competitor .
All the existing Companies just do the work in their own way but if they try and change their strategy then they may pose a challenge but this being a different strategy currently has nothing like competition or challenge from anyone.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

What solution(s) does your initiative address to help emerging entrepreneurs and small businesses grow and thrive in underserved communities? (select all applicable)

Access to talent, Access to supply chains, Access to economic opportunity.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?

What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?

What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

India has nearly 50 Million SME’s employed around 60 Million people and over 90% are Micro enterprises. Only 10-15% of them have adopted IT in their businesses to improve productivity. They lack access to latest technology due to non-availability and high cost constraints, absence of skilled manpower, inadequate infrastructure etc. At this juncture Niqotin is developing Rural ERP considering the MSME pain-points in mind. The Products / Services on offer are affordable, latest in technology, easy-to-use, Indian language specific and can access from anywhere, anytime. Rural ERP will enable enterprise users in Tier-1, Tier-2 cities, rural and semi-urban areas by creating great value for their investment.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

Rural ERP is the world’s First Indian Language Cloud ERP available in 9 Indian languages such as Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu apart from English. Here Rural means “Rural Urban Resources Across Languages”. Rural ERP will be an Enterprise Rise Platform by addressing the pain-points challenging the MSME sector and will be part of the Eco-System in the near future. We wish to bridge the digital divide among the Enterprises, whether Rural or Urban, and we call it as EDI, Enterprise Digital Inclusion.
Anybody who can read, write their local language (i.e Tamil or Hindi) can operate and manage the day-to-day businesses. The main advantage is the Lowest TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). No upfront investment is needed for setup, implementing and maintaining the infrastructure, as Rural ERP resides on Cloud and available On-Demand (Software-As-A-Service). So MSMEs can “Pay for what they Use” and “Scale as they Grow”.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

Rural ERP is a B2B product available for an Annual Subscription targeting MSMEs. Almost all the competitors charge per user per month. But our pricing model is based on Per Edition Per Annum.

Rural ERP has 4 distinct Add-on platforms that differentiate itself from the competition. Those are Commerce, Content, Community and Infrastructure.
Commerce platform consists of Rural EXIM (Export-Import), Rural Pay, Rural SMS, Rural Store and Content platform is having Rural CMS (Content Management System), Rural KB (Knowledge Base), Rural Support and Community platform consists of Rural Ideas, Rural Apps, Rural SME (Social Media Environment), Rural Jobs, Rural CSR (Community. Society. Realty) and Infrastructure platform consists of Rural IMS (Infrastructure Management System), Rural DC (Data and Disaster Recovery Center), Rural BC (Business Center).

Revenue Model:

Rural ERP Pricing / Edition / Annum
Micro - US $ 180 (INR 9000)
Small - US $ 380 (INR 19000)
Medium - US $ 580 (INR 29000)
Enterprise - US $ 780 (INR 39000)

Additional Revenue Stream:
-Chargeable Add-on Services / Features
-Selling Websites, Servers, Mail Solutions, Data Services, Data Center Solutions etc.
-Connect/Showcase/Sell others’ products/services through Business Centers
-Technology and Business Consulting for MSMEs
- Customized ERP implementation
- Membership based Rural/Urban Business Centers
- Expand to Global Market with more Languages

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

The ERP market is served by MNC’s like SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, Sage, Infor, Zoho, Epicor, Netsuite and CDC Software and Indian players like Tally, Ramco, Wings Info, A2Z Apps, eResource, Eastern Software, ERP Next and other Local service providers who mostly target small-to-bigger companies for their products. Most of the MSMEs are aware of high technology license and implementation costs and postpone their technology adoption.

Rural ERP Advantages:
ERP in your language
Visual Business Workflow
Enterprise Digital Inclusion
Less Total Cost of Ownership
Virtually Nil CapEx and Less OpEx
Pay-as-you-Go & Build-as-you-Grow
Anytime Anywhere Access – PC, Laptop, Tablet, Smartphone, Mobile
Self Service portal for Customers, Suppliers, Vendors and Employees

While developing custom CRM applications to our customers in Tamil Nadu we were facing several questions and challenges in front of us. And the Two basic myths about ERP are 1. ERP Systems are Complex 2. ERP Systems are Costly. We wish to break these myths and provide Simple and Affordable ERP to the MSME Community. We wish to show the world that MSMEs mean Most Smartly Managed Enterprises by addressing these challenges with our offerings thus born the product Rural ERP.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

Issues with rural transportation and accessibility to healthcare, markets, and work due to lack of roads, bad roads, or lack of disposable income in impoverished areas. In Africa and in parts of South America, there is need for access to jobs, medical care, or need to carry good from farm to market. Having a bicycle or trailer can be the difference between life or death; or between "making it" or "missing it" in this world.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

Rural transportation products designed specifically to meet needs of people with lower income in developing economies. We accomplish this by providing high quality bicycles, ambulance trailers, and cargo trailers to the developing world.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

Zambikes is a social business that manufactures, assembles and distributes high quality bicycles, ambulance trailers and cargo trailers to the underprivileged, empowering individuals to fight the mindset of poverty and address the economic and social needs.
Practically, weach product address different social, economic and health issues for developing economies.
Our bicycle was specifically designed (we go straight to the manufacturer in China and design it ourselves) to meet the rugged roads in Africa and can help an individual carry product to sell, get to a job, therefore mobilizing people.
Our ambulance trailer specifically addresses the need for access to rural healthcare where "land cruiser" ambulances cannot reach. It also address HIV positive people receiving their ARV's more easily and women being able to have safe child birth in a clinic opposed to in the village.
Our Cargo trailer adds capacity to any bicycle or motorcycle in order to increase productivity for rural farmers trying to get goods from farm to market.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

Our peers are any other bicycle or trailer organization trying to improve the quality of rural transportation in impoverished areas. Other groups such as, World Bicycle Relief, Sakaramenta, Africycle, Project Rwanda, Cycling Out of Poverty, Bicycles for Humanity, and others. Most of these peers/competitors are focused on supplying used or new bicycles to areas of need. We are interested in selling relevant products to create long term sustainability and have branched out beyond just bicycles and into our trailers that are locally manufactured (increases local labor as well).

What solution(s) does your initiative address to help emerging entrepreneurs and small businesses grow and thrive in underserved communities? (select all applicable)

Access to talent, Access to supply chains, Access to technology, Access to economic opportunity.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?

We have distributed over 9,000 bicycles and 1,000 trailers (both ambulance and cargo trailers) around Africa.
We have trained over 50 undereducated employees (many whom are still working with us today).
We have designed the best ambulance trailer and cargo trailer for the African conditions (with help from American designer, Daryl Funk)
We have sponsored over 20 individuals with further education (from finishing high school, to trade schools, to receiving an MBA).
We have raised awareness worldwide (a lot through our unique bamboo bicycles) on the issues in Zambia and around Africa when it comes to poverty and lack of access to rural healthcare

What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?

We project to scale up operations in Zambia for Southern Africa, open a branch in Uganda for Eastern African operations, and Argentina and Brazil for South American operations.
We would like to build thousands of ambulances for rural health care access in those areas.
We would like to provide quality bicycles across Africa and South America as well as Carts where needed.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?

With scaling up, we need to have the right people and the right partners. The biggest barriers will be to prove sustainability in any new market that we expand and then once proven, getting the funding to accomplish the task.
We plan to raise money for feasibility and once we have received the needed information on sustainability, then we will approach social investors for expansion capital.

Winning entries present a strong plan for how they will achieve and track growth. Identify your six-month milestone for growing your impact

Open our new branch in Uganda and locally manufacture over 100 Zambulances and 100 Zamcarts into rural areas with partners.

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your six-month milestone

Raise enough capital to build all 200 units and distribute within 6 months.

Now think bigger! Identify your 12-month impact milestone

With positive feedback from the 6 month milestone, our 12 month milestone would be to have contracts for over 1,000 Trailers

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your 12-month milestone

Find partners to buy over 500 Zambulance trailers

Find partners to buy or retails over 500 Zamcarts

Build our own private entity to grow beyond the current partnership MOU.

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.

In 2004, Vaughn Spethmann and Dustin McBride traveled with a team of fellow college students on a missions trip to Zambia. The people of Zambia quickly stole their hearts and opened their eyes to the difficult realities of poverty.
During the team’s last day in Zambia, Vaughn accompanied a newfound friend, Benjamin, on a bicycle ride. It was difficult for Vaughn to ignore the state of the bicycles around them. They had cracked frames, bent rims and seat posts, missing spokes and were covered in rust. Vaughn asked Benjamin how much his bike had cost, to which he replied, “Used, it was $200 US.”
After a lot of prayer and thinking through how they could address this issue with their business minds and compassionate hearts, they founded Zambikes with 2 Zambian partners, Mwewa Chikamba and Gershom Sikaala, in 2007.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

Bhagalpur was on the ancient Silk Route, is famous for its tussar silk and supplies the product domestically and export it to West Asia, Europe, Japan and the US.The Rs 2000 crore industry in the district produces two million metres of silk a year. It employs around 100,000 people—who are engaged in spinning the yarn to weave into cloth. Mounting odds—such as lack of credit, power shortage and rise in competition from other silk-producing centres in the country—have put silk manufacturers of Bihar’s Bhagalpur, India’s so-called Silk City, on the brink. The industry is also unorganized with weavers taking credit from the market at 5% interest per month. With payments getting delayed they face a tough time. Over period of time, they have become one of the poorest community in the Bhagalpur.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

The solution is promoting weavers organisation and building capacity among them to manage finances and share profits.
BDT has taken a value chain approach for implementation of livelihood programme. It is providing services in all primary activities like inbound logistics (aggregating raw material like yarns of various kinds ), operations (production and processing like dyeing, calendaring), outbound logistics (aggregating products, packaging, transporting products like fabrics etc), marketing and sales (linking to buyers ), and services etc in all the programmes. It is provided support services like institution building, design development, technical knowledge, knowledge transfer, agri extension, procurement etc. BDT is promoting the institutions owned by weavers which will be matured in micro-enterprise group supported by marketing linkages from BDT.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

Bihar Development Trust has always adopted an inclusive and innovative approach towards implementation of development projects. 100% of BDT beneficiaries are economically poor while more than 50% of them belong to backward caste, schedule caste and minority communities. The most innovative approach has been the model which BDT has adopted for promote market linkages for its producer owned organization which will be provided capacity building support for institution development, design development , marketing linkages etc. The mutual benefit trust of weavers are step in the directions. The mutual benefit trust will earn profit by doing sales and distribute the residual profit it among the members. Slowly, the residual profit is expected to rise and stablise at a level which will provide a decent quality of life to all of its members. The income proposed has sufficient income to spend for welfare purpose as well as provide bonus to the members. The model will create 100s of grass root institutions with 1000s of community leaders which will be robust enough to withstand all pressures of most of market and political forces. The model will result in significant wealth creation for the members as most of the gains of the value additions are passed back to them. If BDT succeeds in its vision of implementing such models across Bihar, it will be second instance of wealth generation at such a large scale after AMUL in India.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

Unorganised Business houses at Bhagalpur are the major competitors. The biggest challenge is the practice of buyers to take a sample from one supplier and gives it to different suppliers in an attempt to getbetter rates.
There is no intellectual design rights protecting the designs of samples. There are very few non profit working among weavers like ASEED etc with an objective of bettering lives of weavers in Bhagalpur. Then, there is the threat of large orders getting rejected on small quality issues.
The market in very brutal in this regard. One mistake, and your whole capital is wiped off and you are on roads.

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.

Handicrafts in the second biggest employer after agriculture. Bhagalpur is one of the major center for handloom weavers in India and was in perennial decline over last 20 years. Over last five years, It has seen upswing in business and many activities are planned by government as well as business persons. We knew nothing about weaving when we started. Community Friendly Movement has given us a order and we were searching in weavers villages to do the order. None of the weavers did the orders and we failed in our deadline. It took six months to deliver an order that too by those weavers who have left weaving and were doing construction labour. There are more than one lakh weavers families in bhagalpur who can benefit from the intervention if a win win model evolves. Our effort is an work towards that evolution of model which is taking its own time. Once the model gets right, the benefits of this model can change the lives of lakhs of weavers of bhagalpur plus other artisans clusters.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

Inadequate access to the four factors of production for example capital, land, labor and entrepreneurs. This can be explained below:

1) Inaccessibility to capital.
This is a result of the high levels of poverty yet there are many capital providers such as money-lenders, micro-finance institutions, banks and investors.

2) Under-utilization of Land.
Huge chunks of land are available yet under-utilized due to the fact that many people are not aware of the available land.

3) Under-utilization of Labor.
There are many graduates as well as people willing to provide manual labor(man-power).

4) Inaccessibility to entrepreneurs.
There are many entrepreneurs available but can not easily be accessed due to limited direct contact to them via the internet.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

The @house mobile app provides access to the four factors of production to an individual looking forward to start producing goods and services. The mobile app integrates the factors mentioned above on a single interface for easy access by producers(individuals starting production of goods and services) and their service providers(those that provide capital, land, labor and entrepreneurship).

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

The @house mobile app can accessed at http://www.maketeconsults.com/athouse.
The app is compatible across all mobile platforms(smartphones,Symbian phones etc).
We developed the mobile app to solve these economic problems using jquery mobile technology. The development model to be used shall be incremental model which delivers software in small but usable pieces; each piece builds on pieces already delivered.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

Actually, many service providers tend to focus on one factor of production without considering others. This creates an imbalance of access to capital, land, labor and entrepreneurs with in the population that tries to start producing goods and services.

This time, its gonna be different. Our mobile app intends to go "GLOBAL". Trust me, many people are going to get rich in the shortest time possible, with all the factors of production in their handsets. Access will be no option.

Improving productivity and creating entrepreneurs

The importance of quality seed in productivity of legumes and oil seeds are well known, but the present seed replacement rate of these crops are very low. It is important for farmers, particularly those who are resource poor, to have control over their seeds. This requires knowledge and appreciation of alternative technologies for crop and seed production and other related issues.

Which of the following best describes the barrier(s) your innovation addresses? Choose up to two

Access, Cost.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

Many people work hard but save little (if any) in developing countries like Uganda. They cannot easily accumulate funds to buy assets, machines or other necessary equipment to use. The process of making savings or getting credit itself is complicated by distant banks and paperwork (and is seemingly meant for only literate people). Moreover, mainstream credit/loans have conditions such as collateral security which most of them (especially women and youths) do not posses.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

VAT enables marginalized but yet hardworking persons to acquire capital equipments through an informal loaning process. These include motorcycles and hair cutting machines for youths and women; and agricultural implements such as pumps for irrigation, tractors and grinding machines for peasants. They are also provided with a virtual bank(banking money on a designated phone) through which they pay and save.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

A machine is bought and given to a person (or a team), who uses it to earn and pay for it periodically through telephone money transfers. Part of the amount transferred is a saving for the payee and is paid to them after an agreed time frame for reinvestment.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

Savings and credit cooperatives exist and are trying to reach even in rural areas. This means that there is a competition for clients. However, their stringent conditions, bureaucratic behavior and too much formalized paperwork is their undoing. Besides, VET attaches credit to equipment which is used to raise the money to pay it and this is the niche.

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.

I was orphaned early in a marginalized conflict area. I worked hard to gain formal education with a hope of getting a job. The misery and helpless state of similar others in my vicinity has been a continuous challenge in my life. After my undergraduate degree in 2004, I individually accommodated some in my small room. I was jobless and life was very difficult for all of us. When I got a scholarship at Cambridge University, I saved part of it and bought a sewing machine for one of them to learn tailoring. On my return from Cambridge in 2007, I realized the importance of giving people practical skills and equipment to work. She even partly supported me since I was still unemployed. Since then, I informally mobilized similar others into nursery teachers and hair dressers; and formerly registered a hybrid company in 2009 to officially operate. Although they can earn, they do not save and invest for sustainability and growth, a gap this project seeks to fill.

Please describe the goal of your initiative; outline what you are trying to achieve

Empower as many poor people as possible with not only skills but resources to work and lead edifying lives. I aspire to realize a society where everybody does something beneficial to him/herself and others; and a world without social injustice arising from marginalization and exploitation due to socioeconomic powerlessness.

Which barrier(s) to financial inclusion does your solution seek to address? (select all applicable)

Physical and other accessibility obstacles that prevent communities from reaching financial services, The lack of affordable financial products tailored to the needs of underserved and excluded communities,, Other (Please describe below).

If you selected 'other' above, please specify which other barriers to financial inclusion you solution seeks to address:

Provision of required capital inputs (equipment) to enable hard working persons earn and save for investment.

For which underserved or excluded communities will your solution create access to valuable, affordable, secure and comprehensive financial services?

-Women and youths: These are proportionately marginalized and exploited in male dominated societies. They are economically powerless and depend on their male counterparts or spouses for their livelihoods.
-Rural small scale farmers (mainly peasants): These constitute over 60% of populations in Sub Saharan Africa, including Uganda. Their rural nature limits their accessibility to financial and/or banking services. Similar, majority are illiterate and find it difficult to go through the detailed formal processes that mainstreaming banking requires.

Could your solution work in other geographies or regions? If so, where?

This solution is capable of operating anywhere in the world where machinery is limited yet there are people who can use them. However, for virtual telesaving (banking) to work, the solution needs locations where mobile money transfer facilities exist.

If your solution is dramatically successful, how will things be different in 10 years?

Every person will be able to acquire important assets needed in the production process such as tractors (for peasants). Savings will increase and credit will be spread to thousands of beneficiaries. Credit services will increase to reach to remotest of creditors. Similarly, the agency will grow into a multimillion entity worldwide.

What will have had to have changed to make this happen?

Mobile phones and telephone networks will have reached even such remote areas envisioned here. This is so because, telesaving is dependent on the mobile money transfer solution.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?

A motor bicycle has been bought and given to a youth who is using it to pay back the original price plus 20% of that price.Five shaving machines have also already been bought and given to two youths who are now paying back. Two oxen were also bought and used as a pilot activity with a peasant group in one of the villages and they have so far advanced to a level of being able to acquire a second hand tractor. Other groups were initiated but without this saving component and are yet to be introduced to it so they can save too.

What is your projected impact over the next five years?

Over 10 groups will have been established and given equipments to generate incomes. Over 30 durable machines and equipment such as motorcycles, tractors, irrigation pumps and grinding mills will have been bought and loaned to groups and individuals to work, pay the loan and be able to move out of their poverty stricken conditions.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?

The telesaving component is solely dependent on the availability of the mobile money transfer facility of telephone companies. Where this is not existent, the service will be curtailed. With the confidence building among team members, the traditional method of physical saving (say by paying to one selected member) will be the alternative. The important aspect is to develop the working and saving culture among poor people.

Winning entries present a strong plan for how they will achieve and track growth. Identify your six-month milestone for growing your impact

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your six-month milestone

Mobilize a few team members and induct them as beneficiaries

Buy initial cheaper equipment and/or machines

Evaluate and roll out the solution to other members

Now think bigger! Identify your 12-month impact milestone

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your 12-month milestone

We currently collaborate with global giving (UK) which link us to volunteers and aid in collecting and disbursing donations from well wishers worldwide. Others are government agencies such as police and local councils. I am also working with a group of friends in Germany who will be collecting and shipping relevant equipments such as saws and hair cutters for teams to use.

Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your innovation? If so, where and why?

Southern Sudan is very lucrative country for business and is our my next target. Many are poor as they have been at war for decades and need support to develop. However, the lack of mobile money transfer facilities there is the main limitation. We will base in northern Uganda and only make entries occasionally using the porous nature of the social boundaries. Our team members will be crossing and carry out business there and comeback with our support.

What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?

All board members are working voluntarily. We do what we do with our spare time and this makes us self-sustaining. We also begun operations informally and just got registered in 2009. This has made us know how to go about our efforts with ease.

Please elaborate on any needs or offers you have mentioned above and/or suggest categories of support that aren't specified within the list

While I aspire to mentor others, I need to network with others to be supported legally, financially or technologically to successfully operate say in other countries. Ideas are varied and getting insights of others' innovations is vital for me as they mentor me too. I am also willing to collaborate and share my coalition/team building skills, research work and ideas with others.

Virtual Telesavings and Asset Acquisition (VAT)

VAT is an empowerment project in which assets and machinery are acquired and given to marginalized and poor persons on loan basis. They use them to earn and periodically payback in agreed time frames through a telesaving process (telephone money transfers to a central phone number). When payments are complete, the assets become theirs indefinitely

Which of the following best describes the barrier(s) your innovation addresses? Choose up to two

Access, Cost.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

I have a solution to offer jobs accessible to all the people who do not have neither jobs nor money power; jobs in these fields: education and research, energy, agriculture, technology/factory replicating, manufacturing , processing.
Jobs means money power, high living standards and overall access to a decent quality of living and why not better civilization results.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

The solution is to implement my innovation, an updated version for our times of Perpetuum Mobile of the Second Kind Network(the one workig on energy) , called: SOLAR COMPUTERIZED PERPETUUM MOBILE II NETWORK which offers jobs to everybody in manufacturing , energy and processing industries because is able to produce all the items existent on the market most performantly and quantitatively as well as qualitatively beginning with energy and continuing to all that it is to be manufactured which serves our society's needs to ensure a satisfying needy-free society at all times and/ kinds.
It is a mass production , robotical automatic factory concept able to create all: from clean energy to all the products on the market, without involving human working effort, since all is done automatically, on a clean and green basis.
.Thank you very much!

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

The SCPM2N concept stands primarily for an automatic robotical factory at the most updated standards , programmed by a computer ( which monitors the 3D behavor of the function continuously when its variables change), running on self created clean energy, and able /built such that it created / manufactures all the items existent on the market (see the Library of Congress Patents), this way giving supervising jobs to all the people .

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

The automatic factory concept is one of the competitors but it is insufficient in order to be able compete with the complete status of the SCPM2N.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

In the next few decades, the Asian middle-class (also in Nepal) will most probably become the world’s most important consumer group demanding alternative products to match its new lifestyles. Fresh consumerism is creating new (global) markets and wealth in the country. As the middle-class finds its way into the new world, local producers in Nepal lag behind in the global competition, suffer from environmental damage and risk losing their livelihood. Nepal needs initiatives for balanced growth to counter social imbalances and environmental damage. Strengthening the producers to compete in the market and providing fair market linkage is prime to tackle those problems. Production of, and awareness about, sustainable products (i.e. organic & fair trade) is part of the solution.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

THE BAZAAR is a retail store creating new consumer market in Pokhara by connecting local producers to middle-class Nepali consumers. In joint efforts with 'THE BAZAAR Agriculture Cooperative', it provides capacity building, financial and technical support to its producer members to increase volume, variety and quality. THE BAZAAR is a pioneering concept and the first store to create a local market dedicated to sustainable products. THE BAZAAR sells organically grown products, ensures that the procurement is fair-trade, that its marketing operations raise awareness and that the sales are profitable. The cooperative provides market information to the producers by mobilizing information and communication technologies and strengthen their capacities to produce according to the market demand. THE BAZAAR provides a reliable and common branding to these producers that ensures consumer trust.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

Based on a strong notion of sustainable development, THE BAZAAR is creating a new consumer market with a focus on locally-produced products; home decoration, accessories, groceries & fresh food produce. THE BAZAAR includes an organic cafe, a fair-trade shop, a market for organic groceries and fresh food produce, and an information counter with internet & library facilities all under one roof. The information counter is aimed to provide information & raise awareness about our producers & their production methods, about sustainable living etc. directly to our customers.

In the period 2009-2011 the members of the cooperative have proved their individual capacity and collaboration to produce and sell sustainable products. After shaping the supply chain, the producers together with THE BAZAAR (retail) have founded the cooperative in 2012 and formulated their collective future. The collective aim of the cooperative members is: increasing sustainable income through production of quality products in sufficient variety and volume.
As an apex body, the cooperative will assist small producers by providing access to capacity building and finances, so that they could enter into the formal market with required volume, variety, quality and value-added branding. This provides regular supply to THE BAZAAR for delivering high quality and genuine Nepali products to the growing consumer base. The profit that goes back to the cooperative from the market is fairly distributed and/or reinvested among the members.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

THE BAZAAR’S competition comprise a motley collection of independent shops in one market area, while the more upmarket handicraft shops offering the same products as its decoration & gift segment focus only on the tourist trade, neglecting local consumers. There are many supermarkets (e.g. Salesway, Binayak, Munal), grocery & fresh products stores selling a variety of international and locally-produced grocery items, like rice, honey, etc. It is likely that supermarkets or other individual stores start to exploit this trend of 'organic & fairtrade' as well. Moreover, misuse or opportunistic use of the above words can gradually erode credibility and can make us vulnerable. Nevertheless, various NGOs and government agencies are supporting us and working together to address these needs.

What solution(s) does your initiative address to help emerging entrepreneurs and small businesses grow and thrive in underserved communities? (select all applicable)

Access to financing, Access to supply chains, Access to technology, Access to economic opportunity.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?

THE BAZAAR & the cooperative jointly aim to serve both commercial and social goals:
1. Marketing: branding, promoting and selling sustainable products
2. Quality and Volume: educating, training of producers.
3. Fair Trade: implementing and monitoring fair trade principles
4. Environmental conservation: motivating community producers to adopt sustainable production concepts, such as bio/organic farming and eco-friendly productions

The most important impacts of our initiative to date are:
i) Around 500 community producers/farmers have access to formal markets through THE BAZAAR. All of these producers are following organic methods.
ii) More than 150 farmers have got trainings and access to financial & technical support on bio/organic farming, ecological fish farming and management of group farming.
iii) At least 30% of middle-class consumers (In total 60% of 300,000 population in Pokhara are middle class) are sensitised to purchase local and sustainable products.

What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?

The projected impact over the next 1-3 years are:
i) More than 1000 to 1500 producers will get access to formal markets through THE BAZAAR. All of these producers will get access to trainings and capacity building in different ways.
ii) More than 50% farmers and/or more than 50% of product line sold through THE BAZAAR will be certified under appropriate fair trade/organic certification.
iii) THE BAZAAR will be one of the trusted and leading brands in Pokhara with market coverage of more than 20% in the sector of organic & fair trade. Our target is more than 500 households being regular customers of our products.
iv) By 2015 we expect to scale-up THE BAZAAR in two more cities of Nepal by delivering our impact in larger group of producers and customers.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?

We have identified following threats :
- As general sales of sustainable products will grow, it is likely that supermarkets start to exploit this trend as well
- Our products & services have to face heavy competition with imported goods.
- Misuse or opportunistic use of the 'organic & fair trade' words can gradually erode credibility
- Nepali people in general have the tendency to adopt new trends slowly
- Copycatting of handicrafts with a fair trade label can present a risk
To tackle these barriers we have developed retail marketing plan together Mr. Dick van der Eijk (retired VP Marketing at Unilever). We have also worked together with NGOs like Organic Certification Nepal, One World Al. and government agencies like District Agriculture Development Office etc.

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.

The driving force behind the concept is Mr. Tulsi Giri, a sociology graduate from Tribhuvan University in Nepal. At an early stage in his professional life he travelled through Europe and Asia attending conferences, meeting experts and discussing social and economic development issues. Already in 2008 while initiating USSHA Foundation and implementing 'Youth in Sustainable Development Project' in rural village of Nepal, Mr. Giri saw the potentials of local production sector. People were leaving the production sector and going abroad for labor migration and the country facing youth unemployment. Contrarily, Mr. Giri saw huge potential in production sector esp. agriculture and natural resources of the rural Nepal to build sustainable economy and tackle those problems. He realized that without mobilizing sustainable production methods, value-added branding and market development there would be no way out for these problems. This led to the initiation of THE BAZAAR.

The prime need for emerging entrepreneurs like us is the expertise support on different topics of specific business. Our business model has clear opportunities and possibility to succeed in the market. Nevertheless, we need to develop our own business skills and expertise to realize these potentials. At the same time access to easy & strategic financing is also core to get success.

Indian Rural IT Revolution

Doing with human intellect what AMUL did with rural milk 40 years ago is the essence of this idea. Basically using modern telecom and internet technology to enhance rural education quality directed towards eventual development of Rural IT, and not ITeS, since Rural IT would be revolutionary for Indian economy due to its higher profit margins and the intellectual nature of work. A Rural India better off monetarily as well as intellectually is obviously more desirable for faster development of our “village” nation and to bridge the urban-rural chasm.
