Here's a story about how members of the Changemakers community are providing jobs in Argentina:
One of four persons in Argentina is unemployed in the wake of the nation's recent economic meltdown. Hundreds of people in Buenos Aires, the capital city, are trying to support themselves and their families by scavenging recyclable materials from the garbage. Scavenging, however, is a marginal, disreputable and unhealthy activity that is subject to police prosecution.

Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
It would be of great value to us to receive help from high-calibre consultants and executives so that we may better articulate what we can do for our target groups and to relate to our stakeholders more effectively.
We have different stakeholders groups: we attract students directly but also through partnerships with universities (which help us provide students with additional support). We must rally partner organisations that have an interest in funding students and help students attract funders.
For instance, we make it possible for students to borrow from their own friends and family, university alumni, etc. to cover the cost of their education. This should not be described as an investment, but as a worthy allocation of "play money", as there is always a risk of default. We need to articulate that clearly, but also, compellingly.
We also help universities optimise and leverage scholarship funds. Through us, universities can turn scholarships into unsecured loans that can be repaid when and if the student is able, which recycles their funding so that it may benefit a student forever, turning one-off hand-outs into sustainable funding that builds up over time.
3.
Allocation of resources to deliver results
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
Support from American Express could help us tailor our general communication but also design specific communication for our services: crowdfunding for students, "recyclable" scholarships and recruitment solutions.
It would also help us design a CRM approach to manage our relationships with institutions (universities, charities, businesses) and individuals (students, prospects, StudentFunder alumni).
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
StudentFunder has not received support from professional consultants as such.
However, as part of Oxford's Skoll Centre's Emerge Venture Lab and the Startup Leadership Programme, StudentFunder has received plenty of advice, support and mentorship. Business in the Community (BITC), YPO and Hogan Lovells have generously provided support as well.
Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?
Yes
Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?
Yes
Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?
Yes
1.
Define messages and communication approaches for our stakeholder groups
2.
Design and implement stakeholder management/CRM strategies
3.
Benefit from a brand splash-effect that will help get at least 30 leaders funded in 2013
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Quantitative:
Since October 2012, StudentFunder has helped two students fund their studies, two more are in the process and we will process 100 applications over the course of April for our first partner university and help 9 more students at a second partner university.
Each postgraduate student generates £5,900 per year in the economy (net, averge, according to the LSE).
Qualitative:
Our first student was fell into hard times. Abandoning his studies would have dragged his family into poverty; but we turned that around.
Two of the students supported by StudentFunder are peaceworkers Kivu, DR of Congo, helping end a conflict that has claimed over 6 million lives.
Another one of our students is creating a student-funding initiative to fight brain drain in Puerto Rico.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
Support from American Express would help us strengthen our communication and relationships with customers and partners to evolve into a growth venture that can market beyond a closed pilot, serving hundreds of students by year two.
That vintage of students alone could add around £350k to the UK economy each year! (not to mention the impact that our students would have through their careers).
StudentFunder would then grow to serve thousands!

Improve Access to AT and Promote Barrier-free Tourism in China
Explain what the "innovation" is about, e.g., is it the idea and/or the model you use to accomplish the idea, or your understanding of the target population, etc.?
Disability and special needs is not viewed favorably in Chinese culture and in many cases is not visible as a real social issue to many in China. People with special needs have limited knowledge of and access to Assistive Technology (AT), and they even have few opportunities to travel out. Meanwhile, AT sales persons do not understand patients’ needs well and cannot provide patient-centered services. Without a viable community and network truly appreciating and supporting people with the needs to use AT, 24 million people’s needs are not met.
Due to low education and underdeveloped social welfare system, people often have limited knowledge of assistive technology and how it can change their life. Accordingly, lack of community support and social recognition makes it harder for people to obtain assistance. We provide case-based consulting, community purchasing, and online community support and outreach activities for Individuals, Organizations, Communities to stimulate the emerging market for AT in China.
Describe how your innovation model is distinct from any other organization in your field?
As an organization ‘by people with disabilities, for people with disabilities’, we train and hire people using assistive devices to work for us. Unlike commercial medical care companies or non-profit organization which only regard clients as receivers of philanthropy, RELAY operates from a hybrid for-profit and non-profit model that offers different tiers of services across its consulting, community purchasing and outreach arms. The online community enables them to book and exchange different services online (like exchange between disabled people in a same city to get AT devices at a lower price)
What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?
With improved social welfare (ie, new medical insurance reaching urban and rural), people are obtaining improved access to medical care. Combined with rising purchasing power, more individuals are able to afford better assistive products, such as power wheelchairs.
Relay’s internal organization purpose is to create a virtuous circle. We don’t invest in high cost imported products, we invest in people- we recruit people from diverse backgrounds: technicians, engineers, designers, artists, business specialists, therapists & doctors, as well as patients themselves to collaborate in our “open studio”. A closer network of patients helps us reach a broader market.
How do you make sure you constantly innovate in light of (potential) external challenges, or your growth plan?
Relay is a participative organization which is evolving according to its clients and the expression of their needs. We care about people! We offer patient-centered AT consulting and design, in combination with outreach activities inclusive of people with special needs. We explore community resources and regard it as our biggest asset. We establish an equal relationship with our customers – people with special needs, and include AT manufactures and other institutions interested in disability and elder studies to our programs, so as to reach different segments.
We also innovate the way AT are marketed and advertised, via social media, online and offline campaigns and promoting barrier-free tourism.

Thus nearly 31% people’s needs are not satisfied, that is to say 24 million people have no access to assistive devices. This number will go higher due to the fact that many people with temporary disabilities are not registered as officially disabled. Furthermore, elder people represent another unsatisfied market for assistive devices. The number of people in China over 60 years of age is expected to increase 90% by 2020.

Please describe your solution in more detail
RELAY seeks to address visibility and availability of assistive technologies in China at the Individual, Organizational, and Community level. Through case-based consulting, community purchasing, and online community support and outreach activities we seek to stimulate the emerging market for AT in China. We connect with patient network as well as various professional groups and offer educational and training opportunities to patients and volunteers. We introduce the concept of barrier-free tourism to bring special needs to the mainstream and attract more attention from the public and corporate sectors. We create employment opportunities for people with special needs at the same time.
What are your vision and overall objectives?
To improve access and increase public understanding of Assistive Technologies in China, and to make Chinese societies more inclusive. In order to do this, we focus on people and aspire to offer better services to elder people and people with special needs by promoting a human-centered approach in education, workplace, and daily life.
What is your value proposition?
We want to liberate people with special needs and help them gain independence and freedom by improving access to assistive technology and barrier-free tourism. Further more, we want to gradually change the social mind, which conceives of people with special needs as different and poor, and to create employment opportunities to them, where they can transform their weakness to strength.
Who is your customer(s)?
1. Patients need to use AT
2. Hospitals/rehab centers, and other medical centers
3. Tourism related venues where AT would be needed- scenic spots, airports, hospitals, etc
- international tourists who need assistance
4. Volunteer organizations/schools/non-profit organizations that train people to assist people with special needs (such volunteer organizations are common in Chinese universities and senior high schools)
5. Communities
6. AT manufacturers
What approaches to you use to reach your customers?
First, we closely work with patient network, communities and hospitals. By collaborating with these groups, we can obtain sources of customers. We directly hire people with special needs, who can easier reach potential customers and understand their needs better.
We reach out to other segments by social media, sending out representatives to visit sites, organizing campaigns in tourist spots and inviting public to our creative design studio, which we will collaborate with AT manufacturers.
What are your primary activities?
We advertise/market AT in a more appealing and acceptable way, sell and deliver AT products, and provide professional consulting and designing services to individuals, communities and organizations.
We promote barrier-free tourism by providing accessibility information, and persuading tourist spots to place assistive devices on sites to the tourists.
We report tourism from a human-centered perspective, which can generate ad fees and consult domestic and international travellers.
We plan outreach activities and provide workshops to patients, training sessions to institutions and STEM education specifically on AT to schools.
Who are your peers and competitors? What problems could these players pose to your success or growth?
Some main AT manufacturers and certain medical care providers may compete with us, but we don’t operate solely on a medical model and actually we give more attention to people’s social needs, and thus we invest more in inclusive activities for people with special needs and take full advantage of communities.
There are numerous tourism agencies and websites, which target to mass market however, we focus on a niche market that attends tourists' special needs.
What other challenges - individual, organizational, or environmental – are you currently facing or might hinder future success of your business, and how do you plan to overcome those?
To improve access and increase public understanding of Assistive Technologies in China, and to make Chinese societies more inclusive will be difficult. As a participative organization which is evolving according to clients needs, we intend to adapt to such challenges in their many different forms.
Briefly describe your growth strategy going forward
We will expand our mobile offices to more regions in China and exploit patient network to grow.
We recognize the importance of social media and will make it as our growth accelerator.
Our website is a window opened to China and foreign countries, for both our clients and the companies we work with ( our suppliers producing Assistive technology products, hotels, universities)
What dimensions for growth are you currently targeting for your innovation [select all that apply]
New market(s)/country(ies).
What makes your business "ready" for growth?
The unsatisfied market for 24 million people, the improving medical insurance system, and the booming market for tourism, especially for international tourists.
What are your key growth objectives?
We will change China into a more inclusive and supportive society to face the challenge of accessibility.
What is your timeframe for growth, in the short and mid-term? What are the growth milestones and key activities going forward?
In the short term, we improve lives of individuals with disabilities and reduce the loss of productivity for society of if they were otherwise to remain in low-employment or unemployed. In the long-term, we hope to stimulate the emerging market for AT in China thus increasing availability and reducing costs through improving individual, organizations, and community understanding and utilization of technologies needed to improve accessibility at home, in transit, in schools, in workplace, and in recreation and travel.

What enables Relay to generate profits is the fluidity and the connection between clients and producers. Usually, wheelchairs produced in China are sold in the US with an American copyright, and are sold again in China with a very expensive price. In this case, chinese clients lose a lot of money. They pay twice the price of the product( a wheelchair costs about 250 US dollars, and 500 dollars if imported) Relay proposes to be the intermediary between chinese producers and Chinese clients, in a win/win partnership: clients book the product online and they see the price decreasing while more and more people want to buy it.

We organize trips inclusive of people with/without special needs periodically. Corporate employees on the tours volunteer on local tours and also get their companies to donate.
Expand on your selections; explain how you will sustain funding over the next 1-3 years.
Relay is an organization that will be supported primarily through sales commission and fees from media sponsorships and consulting.
Additional fundraising will be divided in two parts:
-Sponsorship: We plan to work with NonProfit Incubator (NPI) to provide a platform to invite people with special needs to design asstistive tools with professionals.
-Donation: We wish to hire individuals with disabilities and with good knowledge of fund raising. In this purpose, our organization would like to establish a partnership with the “Lime Connect” school, a not for profit organization working with students with disabilities and connecting closely with corporate partners (including Bloomberg. This Entry is about (Issues)
Summary: What specific issue or problem does your Venture address?
My venture addresses the problem of isolation and disconnection faced by many senior citizens. As seniors become less and less mobile based on their inability to drive and even walk extensively, their lives become very sheltered. By exposing seniors to technology, they have the ability to become more connected with friends and family and the world around them. Computers are very affordable and there is evidence that the senior community is buying technology at an increasing rate. However, I have found that many seniors become frustrated because they do not understand basic computer skills. SeniorLink addresses the ability for seniors to effectively use technology.
Misson Statement: What will your venture do?
SeniorLink provides one on one tutoring at the senior citizen's location. Our tutors are generally high school aged students that form a personal relationship with seniors. We have found that seniors enjoy interacting with teenagers and feel less intimidated than they might be when dealing with more institutional tutors. We generally provide basic tutoring and computer installation to increase enjoyment of technology for the seniors. The basic tutoring includes the use of email and Skype and these basic tools, in addition to the internet, provides a level of connection with family and friends that seniors do not typically experience. We provide an easy way for seniors to connect to the outside world via the internet. In addition, SeniorLink assists with buying computers as this can be a confusing process.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
There are numerous examples of SeniorLink's effect on the lives of its customers. An example, is a customer that resides in Florida and her entire extended family is scattered throughout the United States. SeniorLink assisted the customer in buying a basic computer and helped the customer gather email addresses for a family. We initially showed the customer how to retrieve email and view notes and pictures of family. However, the customers spirits were really raised when we setup a Skype call with her grandchildren and she spent an hour with them. She has a weekly Skype call with her grandchildren and looks forward to it where in the past she could only look forward to their annual visit to Florida . We are currently working with the same customer to show her how to retrieve her hometown newspaper on the internet so she feels even more connected. Our next steps will be to show her how to make restaurant and movie reservations and even pay her bills via the internet. Her mood and outlook has changed significantly over the past four months that we have worked with her and she has referred us to many similarly situated senior citizens.
The Community: Define your community, local or international, that you will work on behalf of. What population is affected? Are there other organizations working in this space?
The specific niche is the senior citizen community. I am located in South Florida which has a high concentration of senior citizens and this will continue to be our target market. We are not aware of other organizations that provide one on one tutoring services in the customers' location. There are services that provide classroom training but we do not believe this is as affective for the seniors. The reason is that seniors often cannot travel to classroom settings, but more importantly, seniors cannot gain the benefits of tutoring in a classroom setting.
Founding Story: What inspired your venture? Why?
My grandmother was in a rehab facility about two years ago, I really dreaded visiting my grandmother in that rehab facility. After three or four visits, I started to focus on the residents. I noticed that most were inactive and depressed. It appeared as if for several seniors their lives ultimately become watching television and waiting for the next meal and an occasional visit by a friend or family member. On my fifth visit I showed my iPad to one of the residents. She smiled and asked me to demonstrate how to use it. I eventually helped this resident to Skype with her grandson in Israel. The joy on her face was incredible. I realized that there was a business opportunity to assist others outside the rehab setting and my services were referred to by a number of people, this led to the development of SeniorLink.
What is your long-term vision for your Venture?
My long term vision is to expand SeniorLink to geographic areas beyond where we are now. This is based on adding high school and college aged tutors that are trustworthy and willing to form long term relationships with customers. Beyond that, I have started to develop a template so SeniorLink can be duplicated by high school students around the country. The senior community is growing significantly and people are living longer and longer. This is obviously a good thing; however, seniors want to feel connected and live productive lives. This connection with technology allows them to enjoy their later years and not be isolated from family and friends that are geographically far away. The beauty of technology is that it can allow people to wipe out those geographic boundaries.

Most notable were customers referred by assisted living facilities where I volunteer my time. In addition, SeniorLink spent approximately $400 advertising in a local publication that targets the senior community. Most important was the word of mouth advertising from many of our customers.

مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءHow will your Venture define success in the short term (1-12 months)?
Because SeniorLink is impacting seniors on a one on one basis, and because it is a service business, our impact is not measured on a large scale, similar to completing a project. Rather, success is based on effectively helping seniors one at a time. Our success is relatively basic- assist as many seniors as possible while still making a profit.
In the long-term (1 year?)
Our long term goal is to add additional tutors and grow SeniorLink from a small organization to one that it more mechanized in terms of scheduling. Ultimately, my goal is that SeniorLink will thrive on its own after I graduate high school and leave for college.
How will you measure success?
Success is measured is a variety of ways. Obviously, SeniorLink has been successful to date in that significant revenue has been generated by its services. Based on our current business model, I am confident that more revenue can be generated as tutors and customers are increased.
More importantly, I measure success based on the impact that SeniorLink is making with specific customers. The opportunity that seniors have to connect with their children and grandchildren and enjoy the benefits of technology is the real measure of success. The aptitude of seniors in using the computer varies greatly, but I have found that after a series of lessons, it is rare that the senior does not enjoy the experience.
Success can be measured by witnessing increasing desire of seniors to expand technology knowledge. SeniorLink has had some measure of success as it has witnessed advancement among its clients.
Additionally with new devices such as IPADs and Kindles, provided by the client, clients have become more interested in learning and some more adept at operating such devices. At one assisted living facility Seniorlink holds a group class which has turned into a technology group which meets independently of me. This is proof that exposure to technology has led to incorporation of it into daily life.
Regarding health issues, SeniorLink has introduced memory assistance software and seniors have shown improved memory. Additionally, the use of the fingers while typing helps with arthritic conditions. Seniors with Alzheimer's also benefit from tutors creating a personalized instruction manual that is left with the client. Clients who have Parkinson's disease have been able to use the IPAD with a stylist.
ultimately the question of success in the social entrepreneur setting is whether there is a benefit to society while generating revenue and profit. In the brief history of SeniorLink, I have seen the important connection that technology can make. The walls of isolation can come down.
Why?
Because I measure success based both on addressing a social issue while yielding a profit.

I have worked with various NGO's and government agencies such as CIDA here in Canada as well a 3 NGOs in Kenya.
Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?
Yes
Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?

1.
Establish water and agriculture programs that are sustainable for the communities we are working in.
2.
Offer work experience and employment to youth and community members in the areas we are working in.
3.
Assist with building schools and medical facilities to remote areas that don't have access to those facilities.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
I have worked with many Aboriginal youth here in Vancouver offering them work experience opportunities and leadership opportunities and they have become better people as a result. I have also worked with youth and various NGOs in Kenya and interviewed many community members and they are in dire need to have access to clean water and food. They also need employment opportunities. I worked in one school outside of Nairobi and the youth did not have opportunities to be involved in work experience out in the community which is a valuable experience. I also spent time with Aboriginal youth from Canada in Kenya and it was amazing for them to interact with Kenyan youth because they were able to identify with each others hardships and culture and made new friendships and connections.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
To offer indigenous communities around the world with the right to a healthy environment with access to clean water and fertile soil through developing water and agriculture programs as well as offering employment opportunities and assist with building schools and medical facilities in remote areas.

What problem is your organization committed to solving? In particular, share what is innovative about your approach.
Several local organizations have partnered with Project Introspection: A Case Against Bullying, to provide job-training, life-skills training and "green" jobs for those seeking work-especially for young people and those returning to society following incarceration. It will result in multiple benefits to the State of Maine, including reducing unemployment and recidivism: providing job training consistent with the goals of Efficiency Maine; and providing hope to rural residents that have seen their job disappear.
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
The first is to build capacity among various non profit shelters that serve the needs of Veterans, Domestic Violence and at risk youth and create a memorandum of understanding with one of the Nation's earliest Community Land Trust, here in Maine. Secondly, that memorandum of understanding will fuse the needs of those shelter residents with property owners who wish to dedicate a portion of their property to the implementation of a CLT and an artisan based Co-Op. Thirdly, the implementation of the time banking scavenger hunt will bring the community resources together in a conservative manner to construct Tiny Houses for those residents and youth who can be the connection between businesses, schools and residents with Project Introspection.
Need #1
Digital Marketing Strategy
Need #2
Staffing Capabilities
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
I want to identify what steps are necessary to utilize event driven architecture that reinforces marketing/branding of local businesses to supplement the game play of timebanking members and youth. To host a scavenger hunt among community members, offering "badges" from corporate sponsors, and to retain real time analytics is imperative to the success of this pilot's implementation.
2.
Communications: Timely and Specific
3.
Compassion: Leadership with a Heart.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
I believe that the support from American Express will be best utilized in creating the template for the digital services that will expotentially drive this competition, based upon maximum community cooperation. The sustainability of the program from the perspective of the digital services, and unique staffing constraints (as participants are seens as community managers) is essential.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
Yes, I have participated in the Community Roundtable (Jim Storer/Rachel Happe) community, and have been a follower of UBM, as to learn about B2B applications that would serve the gaming community with real time analytics.
Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?
Yes
Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?
Yes
Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?
Yes
1.
Formalize a Steering Committee to forge the pathways and benchmarks of sustainability.
2.
Introduce the project to local community colleges and university's to maximize the sustainability/curriculum quality.
3.
To utilize media literacy as a means to deliver enthusiasm to broaden game play regionally.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
This is in the beginning stages of prototype with the solarized kit, and Moosehead Furniture has shipped the kit to be assessed/photographed by the process engineer for assembly/instruction purposes. Property owners have agreed to donate 100+ acres for the pilot program to instruct shelter residents in skills to mentor local youth. A proposal is currently being drafted to submit to each shelter, for participant engagement as to identify terms of transitional living at the CLT/Co-Op. A meeting will be convened this week, with legal counsel to construct the memorandum of understanding and CLT/Co-op agreements.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
I believe that this model will be able to address the needs of other shelters in the State, especially those that utilize time banking. As a best practice of sustainability, it will then have the potential to be implemented by other time banks in the U.S. and Internationally, as well.

With the growing demand/requirement for green in design and construction, the building industry is experiencing challenges finding a qualified workforce. This bottleneck is due to a lack of entry-level green project experience available for professionals and students.
Thus, BOULD partners with community projects (ie a Habitat for Humanity home) and transforms it into a hands-on green building education experience for developing professionals and students. We connect a cohort of emerging architects, engineers, and builders seeking entry-level access to a local green project to capture that difficult to find green building experience -- while also building green, affordable homes for low-income families!
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
Our company’s top three priorities are to:
1) Establish partnerships with schools, workforce centers, and building industry firms to develop a consistent pipeline of participants to receive our crucial green building training.
2) Expand our programming to 10 new major municipalities, serving 800 new students and supporting 100 new affordable homes.
3) Continue building new programming and piloting new delivery methods (online, condensed) .

Consumer/Audience Acquisition
Need #2
Peer Benchmarking Analysis
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
BOULD is currently transitioning from a direct sales model -- to a partnership model with schools, universities, and businesses. Historically, the programming has be sold directly to consumers, interested in filling their professional "experience gap." This model was tough, given the amount of effort it took to attract, then sell each individual consumer. Thus moving forward, BOULD is developing a partnership model to work directly with major universities and community colleges to embed this crucial programming into undergraduate education. This route will streamline our operations and revenue cycle -- in that, we will be working with only one payment agent (the school) and we can anticipate a consistent crop of committed participants. We're currently exploring the structure of those relationships with 5 schools across 2 states -- and constantly learning about how to effectively navigate school/university relationships.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
The support will be targeted on how BOULD navigates partnerships with schools/workforce centers/veterans/local governments to source program participants.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
BOULD has worked with other social entrepreneurial accelerators to help refine our business model. However, we have never specifically tried to tackle this problem with a group of consultants. We have tried to approach these different groups with our internal team, but have had very little success to formalize a partnership.
Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?

Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?

225 Professionals graduated. We're focused equipping the next generation building professional with the skills and experience required to tackle the environmental challenges of today. Down the line, we're aiming build up a job placement pipeline -- and measure jobs created -- but presently, we're laser focused on building a better-trained and qualified work force. By 2015, we plan to have trained 800 professionals.
27 Affordable green Homes built. Each of the projects we transform into our "learning laboratories," ultimately becomes an affordable home for a low-income family. And, because we take additional green steps and have support from program participants -- these homes are incredibly affordable and environmentally friendly. By 2015, we plan to have supported 150 homes.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
BOULD impact could double with the help and support of this program. Once we are able to establish and build out long lasting partnerships with institutions, we believe we can train 1,600 students and build over 300 LEED homes for low-income families by the end of 2014.

Brand Building to Change Rural India

What problem is your organization committed to solving? In particular, share what is innovative about your approach.
1. A very backward rural hilly area without access to regular Income; absence of a craft or organized industry. The American craft of quilting given an Indian flavor and a market developed for the products. Potential buyers developed. Now needs to be well established among discerning customers; the brand “PURKAL” has to reach those capable of appreciating and affording designer products. Strategies and resources for brand building and marketing these designer products at premium prices needs development. Payment of fair wages and social security measures with pension and provident fund to the artisans will then become possible. This project which is now in its infancy has the potential for employing very large numbers and the face of this economy can be transformed and become a role model.
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
I. Train enough trainers so that the skills can be transmitted. Document and standardize training processes apart from documenting and securing designs developed. Equip and open three more outreach programmes to induct a hundred more women. Employ additional designers capable of creating products.
II. Develop a brand building/marketing strategy capable of implementation of over a 3 /4 years period.
III. Invest in training of youth in digital and other retailing skills. Elementary ability to handle English is a prerequisite. A six months period of planned and intensive programme will create the needed support from among our community.
Need #1

Need #2
Digital Marketing Strategy
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
We have established a viable economic proposition in a backward rural area.
II. We have proved that women can be skilled and helped to earn.
III. Our products are designer premium products and eminently marketable.
IV. We know that the market is widely spread among discerning customers with disposable incomes. We need to reach our products to these select customers.
V. We need to improve production to meet the demand that will be created through conscious branding and marketing strategies.
VI. With enough investment and knowhow we can accomplish this goal and change the face of a whole community.
1.
Honesty, Openness and complete transparency with regard to our dealings.
2.
Highest quality of our products with materials which are as good as we claim they are.
3.
Complete accountability to all our stakeholders with meticulous care to their interest.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
We are hoping that American Express will focus on our entire organisation. We have only one product although there is a range and a variety. We deeply value the expertise and experience of your executives. Although we have focused on brand building we would appreciate counsel in all areas listed. Digital marketing and acquiring consumers have not been planned activities with us. We need a SWOT analysis and build effective management information.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
5. Never have been able to afford outside consultants. The excellence of our design, awareness of the need for quality among the workers, its verification at every stage and our desire to practice kaizon have helped us build dedicated customers. Our market share has grown steadily over the years through word of mouth of satisfied customers. Fair trade practices have provided dedicated workers. Self Help Groups which establish ownership ensure dedicated stakeholders. As for brand building, SWOT analysis and performance management we have been reading books and experimenting.
Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?
Yes
Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?
Yes
Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?
Yes
1.
Winning national and international recognisitions to our brand "Purkal" and building our sales on its strength.
2.
Build a viable and vibrant market for our products through digital marketing portals based on integrity.
3.
Training our women workers and the youth of community so that we become a viable self dependent business enterprise.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
6. The experiment with the idea of planting a skill among the rural women has worked. We now have over a hundred of them earning regularly. The designs that we have developed are very popular and we are unable to make enough. The product pricing has yielded surpluses and we believe it can be improved.
Outstanding infrastructure for our present level of activities has been developed through donations. The altruistic attitude of the promoters has had an appeal that helped us collect all our working capital as well.
The potential of this model has encouraged us to commence an outreach programme so that another cluster of villages can be helped to benefit from our experience.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
7. A well-developed marketing strategy with a well-established brand would help us widen our client network geographically. However I do not expect that the seed grants that you may offer can help us with our training and production needs. It can help us build a brand and we hope to match the additional demand generated with support from other grant givers. Additional demand will need to go hand in hand with training trainers, additional workers and creation of new clusters. Our working capital needs will also grow.

What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
In addition to our core social program described above, SSUSA also operates for profit model soccer leagues and unique street soccer tournaments in locations like Times Square. It also sells it's own brand of soccer gear. The leagues and tournaments create job opportunities for program graduates and generate an income stream for the non profit. Therefore growing the enterprises is a top priority for the organization. Our top three priorities include
1. Acquire customers for our leagues, tournaments, and gear sales.
2. Retain and Cultivate Donors and Customers
3. Refine our training, accreditation, monitoring model to improve staff performance and ensure we continue to produce exceptional social outcomes.
Need #1
Consumer/Audience Acquisition
Need #2
Performance Management
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
Support from American Express will focus on one specific aspect of our business--our social enterprise leagues and tournaments.
Street Soccer USA effectively reaches the homeless and impoverished youth it serves through our partnership model with social service agencies and low income housing developments.
Currently Street Soccer USA engages its other customers as
*volunteers /coaches in / donors to our community programs
*individual or team registrants in our soccer leagues
*individual or team registrants in our street soccer tournaments
*consumers of Street Soccer USA's "I PLAY FOR" gear
To date we have attracted volunteers, donors, registrants, and consumers through word of mouth, earned, media, personal and professional networks.
Street Soccer USA is seeking American Express support to formalize its outreach and customer acquisition strategy, tactics, and processes.
We need to define and segment more effectively our target audience, identify the tools that we require to research, outreach to, and track our targets for specific initiatives.
Finally we need to effectively cross sell across volunteers, donors, registrants, and consumers.
1.
Trust (we must be honest and we must feel safe enough to be honest)
2.
Accountability (say what we mean and do what we say)
3.
Commitment ( when the going gets tough, we stick together)
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
Support from American Express will focus on specific aspect of our business--our social enterprise leagues and tournaments and our gear sales.
The leagues and tournaments are essential to our mission because they provide tangible job opportunities and experience to the homeless and impoverished youth we serve. They are also essential because they drive revenue that funds operational costs of our weekly programs.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
We have not worked with outside consultants before, however we have focused on this area significantly internally. We successfully operate ongoing leagues in multiple cities, have executed major tournaments, and are currently planning two large tournaments, one set for New York City this summer.
We were able to bootstrap these ventures with the dedication of existing staff because we believe this model is the future driver of our sustainability and social impact.
We feel we are in a good position to benefit from consulting now as we seek to grow these social businesses.
Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?

Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?
Yes
Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?

1.
Creation of Sales Strategy and Plan
2.
Establishment of Sales Tools and Processes
3.
50% increase in sales next quarter
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Street Soccer USA has established a proven model and replicated in multiple markets across the country. To date over 90% of participants successfully attain the life and job skills in the SSUSA Curriculum and over 75% of them are able to move into housing, find employment, or pursue further education or training within one year of joining the program. To date that amounts to more than 1,100 individuals. SSUSA is on track to serve 2,000 in 2013 and believes its model can significantly scale in coming years. SSUSA is currently creating an econometrics model to establish in rigorous terms the relationship between participation in its program and reduces costs in terms of behavioral health, health care usage in general, crime prevention, and long term employment.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
The American express support at this juncture can be leveraged for huge impact. It will help refine our customer acquisition strategy and process and increase our sales, but also completes our sport for social change model. We see this model- our leagues and tourneys in combination with our social program-as a key element to the package will seek to replicate and scale across the country. Thus the American Express support meets a timely need.
Already in San Francisco, one of our program graduates was hired by the company Solar City. They featured him in a PR piece about the excellent employees they hire. Solar City also has a team in our adult soccer league, so in effect the money they spent on recreation funds the program that trained and developed a new and high performing employee.

We want to hear about your “Aha!” moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution’s potential to change the world.
We started health at home as a preventive healthcare delivery organization for chronic care management with fixed package cost. When we saw the demand was on direct care management at home we changed the direction towards the demand base and our negative became positive and we decided to walk where there was demand base ie taking care of patient at home.

Health at Home Private Limited (HHPL)
Explain what the "innovation" is about, e.g., is it the idea and/or the model you use to accomplish the idea, or your understanding of the target population, etc.?
We are out of hospital healthcare service delivery channel. We want to be innovative on service design, development and delivery for the every aspect of life and its changing issues. There were no organization/institution service need of healthcare delivery in local market. We thought there has to be continuum of care before hospital and after hospital thats what health at home was conceived.
We do have healthcare provider who do home visits like nurses, doctors and physiotherapist. What we dint had was standardization of the service and delivery of it in understandable and ethical pattern. Service like health at home makes people to contact one organization and avail cradle to grave service at their comfort zone of home.
We restrict ourself to the strict boundary of ethical practice of evidence based and fully consented service delivery model. As of innovation we can proudly say we were first of its kind n this subcontinent born indigenously with local capacity and human resources and skill.
Describe how your innovation model is distinct from any other organization in your field?
We dint had any such organization in our local market even not in subcontinent when we decided to create such service. We feel at times unfortunate and unlucky as we didn't get to learn for others failure. At the same time we got that opportunity to showcase we can delivery what was thought unnecessary or not very appropriate by traditional practitioners or healthcare institutions like hospitals and polyclinics. we defied the stereotype and became friends of patient even out of conventional healthcare organizations and we were able to do it consistently and constructively for last three years and more.
We take care of people who are unable to come out of their bed right at their home with more compassion and care.
What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?
We are frugal and we think simple solution can be derived for complex issues like cancer care or palliative care. We make every one work for the shake of team and end delivery of care is managed by the care managers. We think in hierarchy and coordinating with the primary care provider will retain confidence of specialists on us and have organic relationship build up capacity. We dont encourage our employee at the end to do things which is not advised and take orders only advised it makes their service more professional and quality assured. We also make sure the service provider is qualified and have the knowledge of our operational model. This makes us easy to move as a team.
How do you make sure you constantly innovate in light of (potential) external challenges, or your growth plan?
We have already been able to create competition around us as there are some other small organizations starting up in home care front. We are simplifying our service and we are making our service more affordable. We are also making new innovative services available in different categories like we are creating nursing agency which is independent unit then we have coming up doctor on call service which is independent and so is physiotherapy and laboratory collection and reporting services. they all work in independent manner and health at home will be working for more complex cases and which needs more concentrated care and efforts.

Please describe your solution in more detail
We tried something completely out of box for healthcare delivery services. There has been growing healthcare services in Nepal like hospitals, tertiary care services and super speciality centers, and everything was happening in more conventional and orthodox healthcare service delivery models. So, as gap was evidently growing, we decided to create something new and serve people who were not getting service in that area where the ACCESS was missing. the creating of formal Access to mainstream healthcare staying at home has been our one of the focus. We also wanted it to be associated with mainstream healthcare so that the continuum of care is not broken ever. This fundamental concept has helped our patient to stay connected with care
What are your vision and overall objectives?
Our objective is simple to create access of healthcare to people who need it at home at affordable cost. The service has to be self sustaining, replicable and scalable anywhere done. The service of healthcare is essential humanitarian service it has to be blend of social enterprise which evolves responsibly. We think this service is local now if done properly this service become global, specially for the societies or population in developing world like Asia and Africa.

# People requiring multiple and frequent access to simple healthcare services like blood testing, medication management and physician visits in close intervals in weeks for example in old age related care.
# People requiring rehabilitation services like physiotherapy management and care who not necessarily need hospital stay etc.
Who are your peers and competitors? What problems could these players pose to your success or growth?
We don't have market competition as of now in our service category. We are pioneer and have been able to create price tag according to our service design, which is considered as benchmark and revolves around the same value all the time. Where as there are group of nurses or physiotherapist who do pretend to present them self as a service provider, which have either had breakaway or had to shut down due to other reasons, which we don't get to know always.
There is none existing service provider in exact our value of integrated service provider in our market. There had been some nursing agencies and some physiotherapy services, which has evolved or inspired in our model. We don't think that is exact competitive model but they do take away some market share.
What other challenges - individual, organizational, or environmental – are you currently facing or might hinder future success of your business, and how do you plan to overcome those?
1. Personal (Non acceptance by family as a doable thing and rediculing process of quiting cardiac surgery residency to persue social enterprise and solution for service gap.)
2. Professional (Non support by senior practitioners as a service for needy one going out of hospital specially from the field of neurology, orthopedics and oncology. Humiliation of doing networking and asking for cases where as there were no one providing solution at the patients service.)
3. Financial (Non availability of fund for the start up both from personal front and banking sector)
Briefly describe your growth strategy going forward
1. Stabilize institutional development (Infrastructure, Training)
2. Marketing (Networking, Branding, MOU, Advertisements)
3. Verticals creations and spinoffs like nursing agency, physiotherapist-agency, equipment buy/sell/rent, doctor on call etc
4. IT integration for branding and e-commerce.
5. Starting training institution for home caregivers in local centre(HR development)
What dimensions for growth are you currently targeting for your innovation [select all that apply]
New customer group(s), New regions(s), New market(s)/country(ies).
What makes your business "ready" for growth?
We have tested our product idea, solution concept design and service delivery to the level from where we can say it has worked well for the existing service gap in healthcare delivery. We have been able to make it responsible service both inside organizational value and outside in society (Award, Media and word of mouth referral). We have future plan to expand, stabilize and globalize the service.
What are your key growth objectives?
We want to make it a concept/brand of service which is needed in every society.
No one has to think that the service of healthcare is only confined to the boundaries of hospital or individual.
The process of the service of home healthcare has to be affordable, sustainable, and suitable according to the social structure and values. Home healthcare has to be complimenting service.
What is your timeframe for growth, in the short and mid-term? What are the growth milestones and key activities going forward?
Short term: We have plans to open new centers in other cities of Nepal or subcontinent.
We have been training in-house staff to run service centres independently.
We have two new independent services arm likely nursing agency and a physician service coming independently as spin off.
We are trying to sign an agreement with hospitals and healthcare organizations for referral base creation.
We are networking with independent specialist for specialist based services development.
Long term: Health at home has to be model of service for the any societies in world be it replicate or partner with our organization. health at home has to be complete institution with training modules, service mechanisms and success stories.
مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءWhat has been the impact of your solution to date?
Social impacts
1. Patients/clients
Saving patients money as they don't have to stay in hospital for extended stay.People recover fast and enjoy recuperating in home (clients satisfaction),personalized care and attention which is sense of exclusivity.
2. Healthcare institutions like hospitals/polyclinics/Insurance
Increased patient rollover, which improves turnover for bed occupancy ratio, which is marker of increased performance of institution. If hospital are efficient with smaller capacity the overhead of the institution is lesser.Gives access to healthcare solution of beyond hospitals and infrastructure based services. Improves income if partnered with such organization and patient is rolled from hospital there can be resources sharing model that can be net income.
3. Healthcare professionals and individuals
It is relief for professionals as such service gives them service expansion option to home. They will have better monitoring access and services like orthopedics specialist giving solution of physiotherapy, OB/GYN giving service of neonatal and infant sick baby care and neurologist giving service for dementia care and management etc.
4. Caretaking family and friends
Reduces logistics support for caretaking of patient like duties in hospital (Attendants), food deliveries and freight and transportation cost. People of family are assured and are more productive as they will be able to do their daily work and duties/jobs. Saves money for all the cost and direct expense at hospital and treatment management.
There are other impacts in social and environment too.
What methods for quantification of social impact are you applying (if at all)?
1. Our growth (numbers, retention)
2. Our sustainbility.
3. Social respect and impact.
4. Happiness of consumer and client including refferal from clients.
5. Award that we received as social enterprise recently.
Could your solution work in other geographies or regions? If so, where?
When we started there was no service of such kind in our society so are many societies in global context such service is non existent. We did struggle and get it right to the extent its been praised and appreciated by both end user/society and service deliver agents/healthcare service providers etc. We think its fundamentally based in universal principal of healthcare where ever there is people and population base we can work.
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
We would like to become healthcare option at home for the people who need it. We will be more flexible with people capacity of both end on consumer end as affordability and technicality of handling complex and difficult cases on institutional capacity. We would like to have training integrated in the service and access to grassroots people for creating alternate job solution and service available for poor people too which will make it inclusive. We would like to be still self-sustaining, organically growing and replicable model of healthcare. We would like to partner with global leaders to learn, explore and exchange. We would like to be more universal and technologically driven which has to bring more value in care.

We are service oriented so our revenue is maintained in few streams, like of nursing care service, doctors call and services, physiotherapy services and equipment sales and rental, lab services, transportation services etc. We collect all revenue in one pool and disburse our service providers and other liability at the start of the month for previous month. We dont operate on advance payment. We always bill our clients after providing service at the end of the month. We are growing at the pace of 100% each year since inception. I started with the cash of 500K NPR in end of 2009 and we have revenue of 5000K for the last year balance sheet 2011-2012. Our financial values at the end of the year 2012-‐13 should look as mentioned below, this with similar work flow and growth pattern.

Explain your revenue generation strategy in more detail
We generate revenue by placement in per-dime basis and in term contract basis. We have pool of flexible numbers as the number of client is changing all the time. We want to add more services and we also want to diversify service modality like integrating more nursing and physiotherapy agency format and outsourcing agency. Integrating equipment and rehabilitation store services.
Share of philanthropy in total income of organization (in percent)
Philanthrophy strategies you are using
Explain your philanthropic approach in more detail
We have adopted organization like old age home who are run in charity and specially looks after old aged people who are left in street for unknown reasons. We call it adoption as the service we will provide will be more valuable to more destitute people. Currently we are looking after 50 old people at old age home. Its managed by us completely by our resource and person.
Expand on your selections; explain how you will sustain funding over the next 1-3 years.
We are making some profit and always been on positive balance side since we started our service. We have small growth all the time from the resources we generate. We have two scope of growth one is organic and another inorganic. In organic we will invest around 10-20% of our resource all the time for the development of organization capacity, promotion and networking. In inorganic we will invest from external source by dissolving some equity or seeking loan (currently seeking with external party, investor and individuals) to invest in physical capacity of institution and make it more productive. The service will come up in many verticals simultaneously and service will be more dynamic. We will invest in hardware and generate more revenue by the enhanced service delivery capacity. Basically we will sustain and grow by creating service and delivering it in balanced and frugal way.

For the last 20 years I’ve been working in the commercial area of multinational enterprises like Sony, Samsung, Lego and Masisa. I have a degree on Marketing and studies on Social Entrepreneurship in France. It was a big change in my life and career when in 2008, working for Masisa, I was appointed Head of Development of Inclusive Businesses. In that path I discovered my strong social vocation. It was a like a revelation to experience that you can improve underserved people’s lives through market mechanisms. Having the chance to know the reality of excluded neighborhoods and prisons, made me truly want to search for solutions.
What makes you an intrapreneur? What are the skills, capabilities, and personality traits that make you an intrapreneur?
I feel I’m an intrapreneur because I enjoy looking for creative solutions to challenges, problems or situations. As an intrapreneur, I’ve been always results-oriented and had very clear goals. I think that one needs to be constant and flexible to move forward, despite the problems that may appear. As a leader, I like to form motivated, results-oriented and well coordinated teams of people who can feel the owner of the projects and responsible for their roles. It also requires a kind of empathy and tolerance to know how to relate with any kind of stakeholder.

نمو (إصدارك التجريبي في حالة جيدة ويعمل ويبدأ في التوسع)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
In Argentina there are 60,000 people in prison, 50% of which has their sentence. 55% of them don’t have a profession or a trade; the 80% were unemployed or underemployed when they got into jail. The 29% of them has little or poor education and only 10% of the prison’s population receive professional or technical training. 22% of their families don’t receive them at home when they are released and the 47% is received in a negative and violent familiar environment, with criminal records and psychiatric history. The 58% of the people released from jail don’t come back to the same place where they live before, and more than 40% don’t have a job. The outcome is that one of three reoffends in the criminal context.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
From Masisa we create a virtuous inclusive businesses ecosystem. We visit jails near a timber distributor and offer them to create or develop a creative and yet productive carpentry workshop. With a carpentry teacher we trained 20 inmates in the production of slab furniture. The distributor delivers the pieces of wood and the inmates manufacture the furniture. Then, the distributor takes the products and makes the payment to the penitentiary services, which make a bank deposit to each inmate and their families’ bank account. The distributor sells the furniture and delivers parts and pieces to start manufacturing again.
Through this model, inmates learn work habits, a trade, use their time productively, increase their self-esteem and improve their familiar and penal legal status. One they are out of prison, they can start their own carpentry micro-enterprise.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
This is an innovative solution in many ways. It is the first time in Argentina a timber multinational company gets involved with training workshops in prisons and generates a sustainable productive enterprise. This project allows the articulation and dialogue between different sectors such as: penitentiary services, inmates and carpentry distributors.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
The Project makes a big difference, giving an opportunity of education and work to people with few opportunities to reintegrate into society. With the money they earn, they can help their families and learn work habits while they are serving the sentence.
My primary activities are:
1. Interviewing the Penitentiary Directors to show them the project and get their approval and support.
2. Presenting the project to the Masisa’s carpentry distributor closest to the prison and showing its social and economic advantages.
3. Reviewing and designing the furniture to manufacture in jail.
4. Organizing the inmates’ furniture manufacture, providing a carpentry teacher, material goods and tools.
5. Organizing the furniture manufacture with the prison’s chief of carpentry production.
6. Coordinating a well interconnection between materials, products, payments and the timber industry.
7. Collaborating with the timber distributor to increase the products’ sales in order to generate more jobs and more people can be involved in the program.
8. Replicating the model.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
Our rivals are big supermarkets that sell furniture in boxes ready to assemble, at low prices. There are also small companies that employ people in jail for low salaries and without adding other value to their work, such as paper bags’ production. Since only the 10% of the penitentiary population works in our program, I don’t see any short-term threat to the project. It takes a long time to get to know the particular characteristics of these contexts.
This Entry is about (Issues)
مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءFounding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.
When we visited a jail for the first time it was a “shock” to me. We spoke to the inmates and drink mate, meanwhile they commented us about their need to “do something” inside the jail; “when they do something, their minds fell free”. Many people want to work but they can’t, because the penitentiary service lacks the resources to train and/or employ them. One of them told me: “Outside I have no home, food or education; here I have all of that”. That comment made me thinks about how this population’s context of poverty and exclusion led them to use drugs and commit crimes. We were offering carpentry in courses Masisa, so I thought that we could take them to prisons. The challenge was to generate a sustainable and productive enterprise to give continuity to the project. It was a great surprise and motivation for me when Masisa had the courage to accept my proposal.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
I think that the impact of this project is huge, because it has solutions to several perspectives of the problem, with a lot of positive way outs of jail.
140 individuals deprived of their liberty were trained in the manufacture of furniture and today, 110 of them are working inside the jails.
People who participate in the program learn new work habits, use their time productively, increase their self-esteem, help their families, save money for the future, improve their penal situation and learn a trade for their lives outside prison.
The penitentiary service reduces the violence in jails and performs its social function of reinsert people into society. That way, the rate of reoccurrence diminishes by 70%.
Masisa’s distributors are glad to serve society, being part of this kind of project and getting more profits.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
My projection of impact for the next 3 years is:
Year 1: to incorporate 4 prisons with 100 trained and working people.
Year 2: to incorporate 10 prisons with 250 trained and working people
Year 3: to incorporate 20 prisons with 500 trained and working people. To create 5 productive outside centers to employ people released from jail.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
Government policies are the principal threat to the project, since they often change the regulations and people in charge. My plan is to sign agreements with the National and Provincial Ministry of Justice in order to have legal support to continue the project. I also have to get important partners such as BID, CAF, PNUD, Ashoka and consulting support to scale the program. A communication plan is also important to gain visibility and will help the project to grow.
مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءWhat is the benefit or value you're creating for your business?
Through this Project, Masisa increase their sales to the distributors participating in the program. With a low investment the outcomes are economically positive.
Working together with our clients, we create a stronger bond and Masisa’s employees are proud of their company is collaborating in such a complex fight against crime and reoccurrence.
How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
We need to get new partners in order to scale the project.
We hope to get a satisfactory answer of the international institutions we submited the proposal.
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
At a long term, we can create a social enterprise dedicated to the program, with a brand with its own products and get in Argentina other types of funding
Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.
In the company I work with the sales sector in order to find the appropriate distributor for the project. Outside the company, I am related to the penitentiary services, the distributors, and sometimes with GNOs that collaborate with us. In the future, we’ll have to be related to retailers too.
What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
Since the first moment Masisa trusted my project, offering the necessary resources to start with. Roberto Salas (Masisa’s CEO) considered this project the most inclusive one, among the other projects of the countries where Masisa operates. Francisco Estruga (Director of marketing) keeps on encouraging me. I feel total support and trust of Masisa to develop my project.

The Co-innovation team itself is very small, very new – and a very exciting place to work! As AVP Co-innovation I support the business to innovate together across regions and functions by becoming more 'permeable', open and collaborative.
The project in this application is not our first attempt at inclusive business. I brokered a partnership with an social enterprise which launched in 2008 but was not successfully commercialised (see vimeo). Learning is richest when things haven't quite gone as planned, and in retrospect without that 'successful failure' this project would not have flowered.
We’ve been incubating this particular idea since 2011 and have built a brilliant cross-disciplinary team from inside and outside the company to develop, prototype and now grow this new project.
What makes you an intrapreneur? What are the skills, capabilities, and personality traits that make you an intrapreneur?
Sustainability is ‘the mother of all collaborations’ so I have always mixed and matched expertise and ideas from inside and outside the company in pursuit of sustainable innovations.
Not all of them have been successful, but what I have honed is my ability to work across sectors and geographies on projects with a higher purpose. I broker and translate between partners, and of course 'navigate' the project's passage through the corporate landscape.
I get excited when someone says “that won’t work because x”, or “we’ve tried that already and it’s not worth it because y“. Why? Because I honestly believe we can overcome systemic challenges by getting the right people in the room and asking the right question... (And anyway, if it were easy it would boring, right?!)

نمو (إصدارك التجريبي في حالة جيدة ويعمل ويبدأ في التوسع)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
Around 640,000T of discarded fishing ends up in the oceans each year, or 10 percent of the world total of marine debris, (FAO/UNEP study). Many fishing nets discarded due to wear and tear and then replaced. In developing countries, Artisanal fishers often dispose of their nets on beaches - where they cause pollution - or in the sea, where they can last for centuries continuing to catch or injure marine life - a process known as “ghost fishing”.
The fishers that discard these nets are often living in extreme poverty and locked into declining fisheries which are only further degraded by ghost nets. 23 million people rely on the oceans for their livelihood and have few opportunities to break the cycle of poverty and environmental degradation.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Global carpet tile manufacturer Interface, and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a conservation NGO, have teamed up to develop an innovative supply chain approach that aims to tackle the environmental problem of discarded fishing nets whilst helping to address issues of poverty and overfishing: We’ve christened this partnership ‘Net-Works’.
Building a community-based value chain for discarded nylon fishing nets will:
- improve the coastal & marine ecosystem
- create supplementary income for coastal communities
Nets will then purchased by one of Interface's yarn suppliers, Aquafil who will recycle them to new carpet yarn. This will provide Interface an innovative source of recycled material for its core product.
We have tested and are expanding this solution in Danajon Bank - a double barrier reef in the centre of the Philippines, and one of the most degraded coral reefs in the world. The area has high population densities as well as high levels of poverty.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
I worked on Interface’s first foray on inclusive business in 2006 . The product was not core and the line was discontinued. This is our first inclusive model on core product.
Our yarn supplier (Aquafil) purchases thousands of tonnes of feedstock pa - including some industrial trawler nets . So it’s not new that fishing gear has gone into nylon yarn. What is new is the socio-economic and conservation benefit created by supplying this demand in a different way.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
Imagine you live on Danajon Bank in the Philippines in a village..
You find it tough to get cash other than through fishing which is becoming more and more difficult as stocks decline. Through a community organiser you hear about a village meeting – you learn that you can join a Village Saving and Loan Association (VSLA) which will give you access to financial services. You don’t have much to bank in the first place though… and loans are always such high interest rates. At the meeting you learn that your old fishing nets can be deposited instead of cash! A simple test kit is demonstrated and it seems easy to run - if the prong melts the net it’s the right material, and pretty much all the nets used around here are the right stuff. When you go crab fishing you have to replace hundreds of metres of nets every few months. You had no idea this material was valuable to someone else. It turns out that for every 2 kilo of net you could buy almost one kilo of rice. This sounds better than some of the ‘craft’ training sessions you have done before – difficult to get the hang of and then the orders dry up. It actually turns out that the nets last for hundreds of years and when you use them to protect your seaweed farm they get washed out to sea and end up killing fish that you then never get to catch and sell. You hadn't realized that your used nets would do this... You let your neighbors know about the next meeting..they're too old to fish now and don't have nets themselves, but there are plenty they could collect from beaches right by their house...
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
Many organisations are working on vital projects to tackle marine debris, alternative livelihoods for poor fishing communities and conservation programmes. What is exciting about Net-Works is that it integrates many of these aspects into one programme which has the potential to be commercially viable longer term and not propped up by aid/charity. Conservation experts also seem interested in how this programme integrates financial services with conservation objectives.
The waste nylon market is nascent in the areas we are working most successfully so far. If local competitors for nylon emerge and are able to pay a higher price this will challenge the model. The differentiating factor is the access to financial services that our model offers communities.
This Entry is about (Issues)
مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءFounding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.
“Couldn’t we buy nets from communities in India we worked with on that other project” our Sustainabilty Director Ramon Arratia asked me, after learning that one of our major suppliers was purchasing trawler nets made of nylon to feed their huge recycling plant. I’d started “the other project” in 2006 as Interface’s first foray into inclusive business. It wasn’t core nylon product, but a new natural fibre range, and had been discontinued. Could this be an opportunity to bring an inclusive model to carpet, and differentiate us from other recycled carpet? Hmm.. I started badgering smart people in the marine and development sectors about artisanal fisheries - the volume of nets? what happened at the end of their life? who owned them? who made them? We got some of these people in a room together in London in 2011 . The “aha” moment? Dr Hill reviewing his PhD and calculating that enough net was discarded annually from a handful of Filipino villages to go round the world more than once..
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
A pilot was run for 6 months which successfully completed in October 2012. We chose to run the pilot in the Philippines, which is global centre of marine shore fish biodiversity, but it faces some of the greatest levels of threat of all marine areas globally.
The objectives were to:
• Build a detailed model plan with options for implementation
• Build the social infrastructure and implement net collection in 6 communities (the target – which was met – was to collect 1-2 tonnes by the end of 6 months)
• Initial evaluation of social and environmental impacts (after 6 months)
• Improved understanding of costs involved in implementing and supporting this programme
Our real impact so far has therefore been limited to the 6 pilot communities in Danajon Bank, where training, beach clean ups and supplementary income was generated.
The pilot demonstrated that the model of working through VSLAs/MFIs was viable and that running costs once scaled could be covered by cash flow.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
Project impact from first full year (from Nov 2012 - Nov 2013)
1. Improved access to financial services (through initiation of VSLAs/MFIs) for 1,400 people by helping them to manage household finances and improve their capacity to access basic services (e.g. education, health, housing).
2. Measurable improvements in the condition of beaches and mangrove areas
3. Reduced the practice of burning waste (and associated detrimental health affects)
4. Measurable reduction in the practice of discarding nets at sea (and associated effects of “ghost fishing”)
5. Diversified livelihoods resulting in increased resilience to shocks and disasters from the sale of nets into rural and impoverished communities (average family income is < £100/month)
6. Full-time employment for 4 local people
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
Exporting ‘waste’ has been challenging so we've e worked with our yarn supplier from the start of the project to ensure material can make it the final leg to their plant at the correct purity level and packed density.
The emergence of competition for buying the waste nets could represent a challenge if they match or exceed our pricing. Unfortunately for the planet there is little sign of this in many poor regions where plastic waste like nets is most of a problem. We are designing for this now though, by making sure that engaging with our value chain brings additional non monetary benefits of access to financial services through the VSLAs, and by working in remote areas that are unlikely to be attractive to more conventional operations.
مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءWhat is the benefit or value you're creating for your business?
Thanks in part to Interface’s sustainability leadership 100% recycled nylon yarn is now manufactured by Aquafil, one of our major suppliers. This nylon is purchased by us and our competitors, and others outside our industry.
Net-Works takes ‘recycled’ up a notch. By supplying our supplier and having exclusivity on the story we give our salesforce an important sustainability differentiator at core product level in a mature and highly competitive market. This 'social ingredient brand' could ultimately supply other sectors too (e.g. auto/electronics)
How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
I’ve had the pleasure of working with colleagues across all disciplines on this project to support ZSL on this project. Our small Co-innovation team has worked with procurement, legal, marketing, design, sustainability and technical teams to put this new value chain together and plan how to integrate it into an offering for our customers.
Funds have covered expert scoping trips in India, West Africa and the Philippines . After selecting the Philipppines for the pilot we invested in a 6 month pilot and have just secured Interface commitment for a year long expansion of the model into Growth phase.
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
We see the role of Interface as connector , catalyst and market maker. But we will not ‘prop up’ or otherwise subsidise the model. It must stand alone and supply our supplier at market prices in the long term. Our pilot demonstrated that in Danajon Bank the ongoing maintenance costs can be covered by cash flow.
Set up costs (all research, model iteration and piloting) have been invested by Interface . We are starting to explore how set up costs for expansion into other areas could be sought elsewhere, or seeded concurrently to accelerate scaling speed. The longer term plan for replication in SE Asia and beyond is to build our learning into a Net-Works ‘tool-kit’’ that development agencies and/or conservation groups can integrate when working in coastal communities the world over.
Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.
ZSL and local partner PSF bring scientific rigor and local expertise which has put meat on the bones of an idea and made it happen. We have pulled in many other external organisations and experts – many of whom have collaborated both formally and on their own time.
I also talk about this seminars I give - we have ended up collaborating with engineering students from Imperial to make sure our nylon ID methods will work in the field and can be replaced in country.
What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
Interface has been extremely supportive of this initiative. We have kept investment request incremental and reasonably low (<£250K total since 2011).This has supported numerous small assignments with various experts globally to assess viability and partnership opportunities in different parts of the world.
Push back has been limited until the investment requests expand which is why we continue to work hard to show the model can maintain itself once established.

بدء (إصدار تجريبي قد بدأ تشغيله للتو)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
Cooking with Mama aims to empower unemployed and underemployed women, who are incredible home cooks, to reach their highest potential through teaching cooking classes in the community. In today’s economic climate many women are struggling. U.K. statistics show that in 2011, 1.12 million women were unemployed, with the 50-65 age range disproportionately affected. While women’s circumstances vary widely, many have extensive culinary experience gained at home. Cooking with Mama hopes to demonstrate the value of these skills by providing training and opportunities for these women to lead cooking classes in the community.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
The unemployed often struggle to gain the experience needed to re-enter the labour force. For example, women who have focused on raising families may lack professional experience, and those who have lost jobs can find it hard to enter another sector. We offer women who are in these circumstances, and who love to cook, an opportunity to lead a cookery class. We see this as a tool to gain leadership experience, develop communication skills, grow confidence, and begin to build a distinctive CV. By developing their confidence and work-readiness skills, we aim to empower participating women to reach their highest potential.
We also offer an experience boost for those seeking to begin their journey into employment in the food industry. We are developing partnerships with restaurants and caterers with the eventual goal of offering women exit opportunities into the cooking trade.
We also aim to reinvest our profits through microloans to invest in the culinary dreams of our mamas.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
Cooking with Mama is the only culinary school of its kind which works with unemployed or underemployed women to lead its cooking classes. Class participants are able to experience a culture through its food by learning our mamas' recipes, which have typically only been passed through family generations. We offers a creative and safe environment to bring the community together through food, develop cultural understanding, and support skills development for unemployed women.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
We hosts "Mama Days" as training programs for our participating women every other month and prior to them teaching their own class. Skills development training is focused on confidence, public speaking, budgeting, and time management. We believe these key skills are critical to teaching a cooking class and can be applied in other facets of her life. We work with each Mama to design her menu according to a budget, source the ingredients, structure her class timing, and achieve her personal goals of each class.
Cooking With Mama hosts its 2.5 hour cooking classes in rental kitchens in London. We have held six pilots for both guest classes and corporate events of about 15-20 people each, so far featuring Indian and Brazilian dishes. Mamas demonstrate each dish before they are replicated by class participants. Mamas share not only their cooking, but also share their stories and traditions behind each recipe. Participants are charged for attending classes, and this money is used to partially fund class expenses (kitchen rental, ingredients, etc) and a payment for the mama.
The Mamas who have led our classes say the experience has been helpful in building confidence and allowing them to interact with people they would not have otherwise. They have been able to develop skills through the training and have built a community with other women and individuals in the culinary trade. We are working with other restaurant and catering organisations in London to provide further exit opportunities for these women in the culinary space.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
Cooking with Mama offers an experience like no other cookery school – an opportunity to learn about food preparation and tradition from a woman who has mastered her own culture’s home cooking. While other cookery schools offer classes with trained chefs, we give participants the same cooking skills while also re-creating that special feeling of home cooking, conjuring up nostalgic memories of family gatherings and holidays. It’s the experience that sets us apart. Our competitors are other cooking schools in London - from at-home lessons to professional culinary schools. There are currently no other cooking schools working with unemployed women or untrained chefs. However, if a similar idea arises, our first mover advantage has been set through established relationships in the industry.

مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءFounding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.
Jennifer is a self-proclaimed foodie – she enjoys experiencing new cuisines from around the globe, trying new recipes, and taking cooking classes whenever she’s on holidays in a new city. After she moved from Canada to the UK, she fell sick and wished her mum was around to cook her delicious soups. Except her mum was living on the other side of the world, Jennifer didn’t know the recipe, and she didn’t even know any other mums in London to call upon for cooking help. Then it dawned on her – What if she could learn cooking from someone else’s mum? What if she could learn different types of ethnic recipes and cooking skills from different mums throughout London? And What if she could use food to empower unemployed women and to gain new skills? That’s when Cooking With Mama was born!
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
To date Cooking With Mama has held six cooking classes for a total of 120 participants. Therefore, we have been able to provide 120 individuals with the opportunity to learn a culture through its cooking classes and develop their home cooking skills.
More importantly, these classes were taught by three women. Through our pre- and post-class surveys and discussions, these women have noted an increase in their confidence, public speaking, budgeting, and time management, Over the past four months we have worked with six women through our "Mama Days" (i.e. training and focus groups) to explain our program and provide them with the necessary skills for leading their own cooking class. Our statistics show that we are achieving our impact of providing these women with confidence and work-readiness skills.
Our statistics also prove that this idea can be replicated in other countries. We are currently working on developing chapters in Berlin and New York through interested volunteers.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
We at Cooking with Mama are dreaming big. While cookery classes are our core activity, we want to expand our offering and impact, while remaining sustainable. We are keen to begin selling supplementary products at our classes – including spice kits, aprons and cookbooks. Another long-term goal is to set up a fund to provide microloans to our Mamas, so that they can pursue their own culinary dreams, such as to run a stall at a food market, to attend culinary certification classes at a local college, or to develop her own catering service. Another goal is expand globally - we have had interest in expanding the idea in NYC, Berlin, Shanghai and Toronto. We see these ideas ways to remain a sustainable venture, while providing maximum benefit to the women.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
As a social enterprise one key barrier to success is understanding how to achieve our social mission while remaining profitable. We are currently addressing this barrier by reviewing our business strategy in understanding how to lower our largest cost (kitchen rentals), increase profits by looking into different customer groups, and applying for grant funding to cover specific costs related to our venture (i.e. fees paid to the women for teaching cooking classes).
Another barrier to success is understanding how to brand and market our venture to the public. Through our pilot phase we know that we have a strong service - now we need to determine a way to communicate our value proposition to our customer base. We are currently working with marketing experts to address this issue.
مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءWhat is the benefit or value you're creating for your business?
Cooking With Mama has adopted a sustainable business model where class participants pay a fee for each cooking class attended. This money is then reinvested back into the venture - with the majority covering the rental costs of the kitchen space, providing compensation to the mama for leading the cooking class, and covering the raw ingredients. A small portion of this money is then reinvested into the growth of the entire organisation. In the future, we plan to expand our profits through cooking products (i.e. spice kits), recipe books, and catering.
How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
Cooking With Mama is an entirely volunteer-run organisation. It's lead by two directors, Jennifer and Amanda, who are also supported by a volunteer team assisting in areas such as mama recruitment, administration, and event planning.
In addition to its volunteers, the organisation reaches out to its four advisers (through the Emerge Venture Lab) who have experience in social entrepreneurship. It also reaches out to mentors and friends who work/volunteer in food-related industries, social entreprises, and community groups. This has been useful such as receiving tax or legal advice upon company setup, or attending a marketing and branding brainstorm held by marketing professionals in London.
To start, we invested our own funds and also received a £2000 grant to help in the pilot phase,
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
Our long term funding strategy is three-fold:
1. We plan to increase our profits through our cooking classes. Having piloted different classes and developed a strong model for our mama training program and cooking class delivery, we are now looking to better cater our classes towards different customer groups - for individual, group and corporate classes. We are currently undergoing strategic planning for our marketing and branding to better communicate our venture and its mission.
2. We plan to develop partnerships with groups such as supermarkets and kitchen spaces to reduce our costs of hosting classes.
3. We are applying for grants to drive our growth. This funding will be used to help test different cooking class ideas, expand class offerings, and develop our mama training programs.
Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.
In addition to its volunteers, advisors and mentors in our internal resources, Cooking With Mama relies on its partnerships with culinary schools and community centres where its rents its kitchen space, relies on other community groups which support womens unemployment to reach out to potential mamas, and relies on its social entreprise community to help spread the word about our venture in their personal networks. This is important to us and word of mouth is our best advert.
What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
Cooking With Mama has received support from two organisations:
1. The Emerge Venture Lab is a 12-month accelerator program which supports new or early stage social entreprises. Through this program we have received training on how to develop our venture from an idea into its current pilot phase. We have also received mentorship through various volunteer advisors from the startup community.
2. The Royal Society of Arts has granted us £2000 to assist with our pilot phase.
While the Entire ICT tools has already been developed and had been field tested and is being used in smaller projects , it is not a open tool as of now which can be just plugged to any project based requirement. The Idea is to make this ICT tool user friendly so that any external interface is not required to use the same.

We are in the start up phase, and it is part of our vision to see change in the women that will work within our business. In order to do so we will be working "on the ground" with the business staff as a whole. It is here will find the dynamo for good ideas. Motivation and encouragement of the women we work with is what will make us succeede as an intrapreneural business. Our utter most important personality trait is therefor the ability to show emapthy.
Communication amongst our colleagues is key to pick up the good ideas for viablity of our bottom line.

فكرة (أنت متأهب للإطلاق)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
Since 2010 we have been working alongside a volunteer organisation in Livingstone, Zambia, whose purpose is to eliminate prostitution. Kwenuha offer a variety of programs with the goal of empowering former sex workers, as well as vocational training, where prospective work or self-employment is the desired outcome.
However, over the years it has proven to be difficult to reach this objective. Stigma and high unemployment rates are the leading factors that prevent Kwenuhas members in obtaining future employment.
This also creates a great challange for the organisation. If the women can't move forward the organisation will not have staff to help others "off the streets", and the organisation will not be able to create positive ripple effect.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
We are starting up a social enterprise in Livingstone, where we will create and sell high quality leather bags for the concious consumer under the brand WayaWaya.
As a social entrepreneurial organization our vision is to “fulfill dreams and strengthen the individual through sustainable work”. We are establishing a sewing factory in Livingstone, Zambia. This will operate as an extended job prospect for vulnerable women, and will be a possibility for them to engage in an ordinary work environment. The fashionable leather bags that we manufacture will be exported internationally under the brand WayaWaya.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
Over the past years the fashion industry has been critizised for the lack of collaboration along the value chain. The demand has created poor working conditions, and there is need for change. It is not only the manufacturers wrong-doing, but a value chain as a whole. High demand for quick delivery gives little room for flexibility and change. By being in charge of designing, manufacturing and sales we are shortening the value chain and improving transparency.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
We are collaborating with several NGOs in Zambia who work on a basic level solving emergent social problems. Our organization will be the next step for the people involved. We are offering proper work with good salaries and uplifting work conditions.
We believe in transparency and as we, unlike most other fashion brands, are in control of our own production, we have a unique position. We strive to maintain our social and ethical value throughout the whole value chain, and partner only with suppliers who can meet our requirements. Local suppliers are preferred.
We will strive to uplift our employees through skills training, respect, empowerment, motivation and close and personal follow-up of each individual. Workdays will be no longer than 8 hours, 5 days a week, and wages will be on a good Zambian level with possibilities for a bonus.
We will continuously scale our production based on the market demand. More products sold, means more people employed. We will continuously search for more NGO partners to recruit from. When we have a good working production model, we want to scale to other African countries to scale our social impact.
Our brand story will be concentrated around the unique stories of our women. How they find strength and motivation despite their background. Through our brand the consumer will get a feeling of knowing the person who made their purse. Story will be communicated through elements such as tags, leaflets, webpage, PR stories and social media/viral videos.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
Our main target segment is trendy, wealthy and conscious female consumers from 25-40yrs. We are entering the luxury market, which is growing. Products will be sold on the Internet and in fashion stores first in the Nordics, then US and other European countries.

مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءFounding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.
We didn´t have the "aha" moment for our idea while working for the peace corps, but on our time off. It didn’t take long for a couple of shopaholics to discover that Livingstone lacked proper clothing stores. And with a big passion for fashion we quickly trailed the solution to our problem.
In Livingstone there are hundreds of informal second-hand clothing stores. Vintage, second hand, beta products, high end. You name it they’ve got it. And so the treasure hunt had begun. Any garment with an outdated design, nice colour or good quality we took to Emmah´s Wear, the local seamstress.
Over the year of 2010 Emma and her employees made many nice things for us, but that is merely all they have done. They taught us about Zambian courtesy, work ethics and everyday struggle. We have to date a much appreciated relationship. Emma is an important piece in our puzzle, and we are very grateful to have her as part of our network.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
When Merete and Iris enrolled a master in innovation and entrepreneurship in Norway Birgit becacme engaged. From here we have worked with the project as part of school and on our time off, which has helped us strucutreize our nascent business idea.
We are still in the nascent phase, and we have not yet made any impact to any individual. The creation and composition of our team and help from teachers and professional guides through our school have helped consolidate our business model. We have reviewed several ways on how to implement further training for our future staff. The design of our product has been evaluated carefully both to satisfy the consumers need and in order for our business to survive and grow organically. As an example we wanted to use off-cuts and second hand material, but after evaluating access to the supply and quality of material we saw this as a less sustainable model. Using leather from a local tannery is more viable and will support the local economy.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
Job creation will have a tremendous impact on the individuals, their families and the community. They will have the possibility to earn their own money, which will buy food, shelter, clothes and medicines. Our partner organizations will also be able to help more people when spaces are opened.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
The biggest barriers for success within the handbag-market is distribution and customer loyalty. This can be contract with distributors, placement in store, realtionship to the fashion-press, scale advantages within marketing and production and branding familiarity. We are actively working on lowering these challenges.
An example of lowering the challanges is to use under the line marketing to get our brand recognized.

in accordance to our growth we will also be supporting the local economy.
How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
In order to run the start-up process as smoothly as possible with the necessary resources available, we account with a capital requirement of $350 000 distributed over 2yrs. This will result in a surplus after 2 years. At this point we have employed 100 women in Zambia and are selling 10 000 purses a year.
We are currently working on applications for support through philantropic funders and supporters. We are also working on carrying out fund raising in Norway and Zambia.
For the first period our biggest expenditures will be location, equimpent and expert staff (designers and seamstresses).
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
As mentoined above it will take us about 2 years to break even. It will be important with funding and support in the very beginning. Our advantage is that we can sell our product from the very first manufacturing day locally in Zambia. It is part of our strategic plan to make use of the tourist market in Livingstone to cover expenditures while expanding and streamlining the business.
Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.
We are in contact with suppliers in both South Africa and loccaly in Zambia. The supplier in South Africa has already helped us with leather for our prototypes, free of charge.
We have a good network in Zambia, and have involved both a local accountant and advisors. We are collaborating with individuals that with can create pull-effects locally.
We are also in contact with three large NGOs that are working with vocational training for vulnerable women.
What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
Our board is to date our most important internal support. Livingstone is the tourist capital of Zambia, and one of our board members are heavily involved in LTA (Livingstone Tourist Association). As part of the strategy to obtain cash flow on an early stage we will attract tourists locally to buy our products. Our board has already been in contact with different lodges, and they will set up tourist shuttels to come to our manufacturing site.

بدء (إصدار تجريبي قد بدأ تشغيله للتو)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
Youth unemployment happens to be my main area of focus. In every country around the world today, the issue of youth unemployment is very much addressed, but unfortunately, its more in a theoretical sense rather than the practical sense. Politicians make this their top priority so as to get into power, but yet accomplish nothing while in power. The world can only be a better place if youths are given the chance to express themselves in a professional way, for they constitute basically the work force of every country globally.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
The main solution will be to acquire sufficient skills so as to better manage the project and its finances for a professional knowledge and communication skills, I believe is key to a successful business, and lets not forget that in so many cases where the money is available but without no sense of direction, communication skills, planning and technical know-how, the money could be wasted.
To acquire sufficient and adequate invaluable soft skills so as to ameliorate my interpersonal, communicative and team work skills which will facilitate the setting up of more and more projects for the good of all.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
For every business to be very successful, a professional communication must always exist between the staffs and board members. This can only happen when the subjects involved are very well trained and orientated. Another issue is that of finance which serves like a bullet in a gun. Without a solid financial background, no business whatsoever can be established. Money moves the train while the knowledge serves as the pilot.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
Ever since this project was established from our little professional skills, at least three bigger projects have participated in the pilot and have been presented on an existing online platform(Facebook) and have been monitored real time online. Online communities have been founded around these three projects that are made up by people/organisations/companies directly supporting or funding the projects and by people/organisations/companies that are directly being supported by the projects. The project data of these online projects is tagged and searchable so it can be used for learning by others. Also, a final lessons learnt document is developed, describing the challenges encountered by the organisations that have piloted their projects on the online platform, describing the requirements of an online platform that can deliver on the goals listed above, and recommending ways forwards.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
This project however has enabled us to learn how to better create employment opportunities that can better the lives, and businesses of others, most especially the youths which happens to be our main group of focus. From our example, we make people understand that it's not the obligation for the government to grant employment for all, but it's every individual's responsibility to create employment opportunities that could be of benefit to others. I am very much available and willing to lend a helping hand whenever need be.

When I noticed back in my home country that so many young people like myself had so many ideas but with no medium to expose them, I then decided to put in place a medium of exchange of ideas. Its over a year and a half ever since my idea came to life, back then in Cameroon. For me, its not the responsibility of the government to create job opportunities for all, but its the responsibility of all to create opportunities that can be of help to others. Just like the late American president John F Kennedy said; "Ask not what your government has done for you, but rather ask what you have done for your government". I think positively and so I act positively
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Many projects have been monitored and sponsored. This led to the creation of bigger projects which are now sponsoring other projects online.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
More and more projects will be created and this will result to lower unemployment rates, for those involved shall have the opportunity to demand for support from others thereby giving them the opportunity to work, and that is employment in a technical sense

بدء (إصدار تجريبي قد بدأ تشغيله للتو)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
According to a World Bank global health status report, malnutrition is the most pressing health problem implicated in the deaths of 20,000 children worldwide everyday & adversely affects the physical/cognitive development of generations of children. The communities are unable to migrate from nutritional dependency to independence & few health initiatives (supplementation/ nutrition programs in public health facilities) reach them. The consequential failure to tackle Malnutrition places it as a common underlying factor that continues to derail the achievement of all the 8 MDGs.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Eureka Nutritional solutions provide solutions to micro-nutrient malnutrition. Fortifying staple flours for over 300 million children & young women who are limited by expense & imprecision to access Iron, Vitamin A & Zinc is our mission. We manufacture micro-nutrient rich porridge flour, maize meal flour & a health seasoning premix, avail them to the malnourished through affordable retail distribution in rural areas, low market urban areas and smaller outlets in smaller packs of 250 grams that the majority millions at the BoP can easily access & afford.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
Historically, small-scale fortification efforts have been limited by expense and imprecision; preventing the most vulnerable populations from accessing the benefits of additional vitamins and minerals added to staple food products. This innovation proportionately dispenses nutrients into flour that is affordable, effective and accurate.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
Staple Food fortification has been endorsed by the 2008 Copenhagen consensus as the least expensive/most reliable approach to address micro-nutrient deficiencies on a larger scale. This strategy works in favor of millions with limited access to centrally processed foods by effectively addressing limitations that prevent fortification efforts from being widely implemented by ensuring this micro-nutrient premix availability in the first instance. It’s coupled with innovative equipment such as the all-important micronutrient fortification facility and product availability in affordable, accessible, reusable economy packs in the most common retail outlets as impactful designs that will eventually lead to nutritional autonomy.
The strategy uses staple flours as delivery vehicles for the critical micronutrients, avail them through affordable retail distribution in rural, low market urban areas in smaller packs of $0.5 that the majority millions in the survival markets can access. The economy packs to the majority who live on $1-2 a day generate low unit margins but profitable volumes to ensure financial growth and scalable
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
ENS has exclusively packaged a new model of nutritious food delivery which is not offered by any of peers & competitors who generally offer only a direct service. There are ventures that sales staple food - for example, liberty Food, & Rose allied - but these services typically target urban sector. However, as a core team of diverse individuals, each one bringing unique&complementary skills&experiences to the table, this combination of talent, expertise, high tolerance for ambiguity dedication & determination to impact on the communities we serve & ability to take risks & experiment with new ideas are our greatest strengths

مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءFounding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.
ENS began within Rainbow Gate Foundation in 2012 in response to the enormous gap between the health care systems in Nigeria. Interested in looking at sustainable preventative health care strategies, ENS’s initiator learned that micronutrient health was the basic building block on which rests everything from a child’s ability to resist HIV to a country’s ability to migrate from economic dependency to independence. Yet the most vulnerable people would never see vitamins and minerals in their lifetime, no matter what happened. Few health initiatives, such supplementation and nutrition programming would be able to reach them. The solution became clear: a strategy that would reach these most at-risk populations and provide them with the benefits of critically missing vitamins and minerals that other populations had access to. Making this solution a reality would have an enormous impact.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Since inception in 2012, we’ve Each day gotten closer to reaching our goal of reducing widespread Iron deficiency anemia, vitamin A, zinc,& folic acid deficiencies among millions of children & young women.
-We’ve contracted 200 farmers through their cooperatives to produce grain amaranth, moringa oleifera & mushroom.
-Introduced a new micro-nutrient packed seasoning premix with numerous health benefits packaged in 50g reusable dispensation bottles/100g sachets used to season any food just like with iodized salt.
- Installed an-all-important micro-nutrient fortification facility that proportionally dispenses micronutrients into flour during processing.
-We've invested a total of $5,000 in the enterprise.
- Advanced to raise further capital through the Prestigious 2013 Echoing Green Fellowship and striving to raise further capital through the Ashoka Changemaker.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
The long-term impact of this project are to:
1. Produce a device that allows for effective, affordable, and sustainable production of a fortified product at small, local mills that is nutritionally adequate for the target population.
2. Reduce the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in the target population resulting in decreased rates of maternal and infant mortality, childhood blindness, infection, diarrhea, mental retardation, and lead to increased energy, school attendance, worker productivity and economic development.
Small-scale fortification promises to be one of the most significant break-through technologies in reaching rural and most at-risk populations.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
The simplicity and adaptability of the current procedure would likely rule out any insurmountable challenges. This has proven true during the pilot phase in Abeokuta and would likely be the case once scaled-up across Nigeria and other African countries. Lack of attention to the needs and concerns of the community and inability to adapt to and address local concerns would present a challenge to the project's success. Such success, however, will depend largely on the development and adherence to a strong and sustainable business model, which has been designed by ENS.
مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءWhat is the benefit or value you're creating for your business?
1. A sustainable business model ensuring the product can be manufactured and distributed globally while maintaining feasibility and affordability.
2. Strong in-country, on-the-ground partnerships that will facilitate the integration of the product and the fortified product within the local context, paying close attention to community concerns.
3. Strong support and willingness on the side of local millers to adopt the new technology and community members to purchase the fortified product.
How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
Funding has been leveraged from local investors to allow seed funding of the projects.
We have a strong internal support that helps us to secure and maintain funding for the initiative. This allows us to staff a small team to manage the overall initiative. We have a supportive team in place that provide strategic guidance and serve as liaisons to important issues throughout the organization.
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.
Partnering with an NGO working in the community where the product will be used and among the population it will serve will be critical for appropriate tailoring of the innovation and acceptance of the fortified product. Such an operational collaboration will allow for the sharing of information regarding markets and bottom line incentives .
What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
Trustees of Rainbow Gate Foundation have been instrumental in leveraging internal resource for these projects. Times when support has been requested we have been delighted to receive it unconditionally. As our daily chores fill our time, the main push-back will come when major investment is needed, but we plan to fill these gaps by leverage through supportive and institutional funding.

فكرة (أنت متأهب للإطلاق)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
The accounting and strengthening of a person's life work should be intact, I see an opportunity to impact how a person is looked at and even treated by accounting for their tasks completed.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
The Primary System is: Computer software/hardware that keeps track of all completed tasks of every individual within the city or community. It also lists all available tasks that are open for completion. The Primary System accounts for the completed tasks.
How it works: Person's monetary wealth is programmed into system along with a profile containing, experience level, personal info and family info. Person searches tasks, finds an available task and selects it to become pending. Once task is completed that task is listed in to the personal profile. Person goes to the store slides PSC (primary system card) store attendant can see the person's work history and contribution to the society.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
A person that is appreciated by an action tends to invest more energy. By accounting for all tasks competed that person is more than a Figure, they become an essential role player and committed partner in how that society develops. "Everyone is my company, for I am in the company of everyone." In our societies a demand for honesty and diligence defines who gets the job. With The Primary System it is irrefutable who did the job. Giving credit where credit is do.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
With myself as the example: I am a hard working labor intensive type of person, so tasks under these conditions would be perfect for me. As each task is completed the community sees how I am contributing to society and I am building a profile that will one day show my involvement in the communities design and productivity. "There is only one price for a person's contribution to society, that being the full recognition of the recorded task completed." With The Primary System there is only up!
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
Neither peers nor competitors derive from "The Primary System". It is an innovative way to begin new communities, or transition failing communities. Cities with large populations would only be a consideration after world leaders saw the incremental growth in community mural and productivity.

The light went on, in the developmental stages of [Ryz Flow] "The Proposal", A self sustaining community that creates a surplus that can be shared with the world. A year after "The Proposal" aired, another video was present unveiling a few more details. Then the JPG. software templates were publicly shared (attached in the media section). That was the true Aha! moment.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Hundreds of people have heard about "The Primary System", No further steps have been taken to my knowledge.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
By 2015 I plan to have the software program ready to be implemented. Over the next 2 years I will keep sharing the idea on multiple levels of communication including but not limited too... radio, tv, internet, and by global supporters.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
I am very optimistic and this is a very big world with room for lots of different ideas. I believe "The Primary System" belongs somewhere on earth. I will strive to find the first community. The barrier is obvious, this is a monetary world. Someday it will be a primary world.

How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
I have harnessed the internet and begun sharing the possibilities. I plan on taking an international tour promoting "The Primary System". I am looking forward to collaborating with others and seeing how we can make this a reality.
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
The design of The Primary System makes it invulnerable to needing further resources or funding. Once the software is developed it can be implemented into the community.
Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.
Once I have funding for software development. I will then seek an accredited software engineer. I currently have no partners contributing to "The Primary Systems" development. Although sites such as youtube, vimeo, facebook, myspace, twitter, google +, wordpress, soundclick, archive.org, and of course changemakers.com have given me a wonderful platform for presenting the system,
What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
I have received a few compliments by intrigued viewers.

This Entry is about (Issues)
Summary: What specific issue or problem does your Venture address?
Our venture addresses the issues of youth unemployment and youth underemployment. Youth are the only demographic that has not yet recovered from the employment losses suffered during the recession, and the unemployment rate for youth currently sits at 14.8%. In addition, 1 out of 3 individuals with a post-secondary diploma moved into a low-skilled occupation after graduation. These youth are bright and passionate and just need the tools to land the right job after they graduate.
While we believe further research is necessary to fully understand the scope of the problem, some of our existing research (http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/1296040--how-did-we-create-su... & http://youngandjobless.com/) shows that the problem is a skills gap.
Misson Statement: What will your venture do?
Our venture aims to bridge the gap between seemingly unattainable jobs and recent graduates. For recent graduates we hope to provide skills training that will help enhance skills they have already learned and obtained in their post-secondary education. This will better prepare them to find a job that reflects or stems from their education. Next, we aim to work with employers to understand the value that youth can bring to the workplace - from fresh and youthful perspectives to their tech savviness. In addition, we hope to utilize the Get Youth Working grant available to employers from the government to further encourage them to hire youth. This venture works both with youth and employers, understanding that both can work together to start to solve this problem.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
A fourth year Sociology student is looking for a job upon graduation. She is not planning on going back to school but isn't sure what she can do with her degree. She comes to us because she heard about our data analysis workshops. She took survey methods and statistics in school, so she has a background in analysis, but she wants to enhance her existing skills.
On the other end of things, we are talking with a local market research company that is looking to hire. We help them see the value in youth and introduce them to the Get Youth Working program. As a result, they are keen to hire some recent university grads with a background in data analysis for their market research projects.
After the student finishes our workshop, she is confident in her data analysis ability. In addition, she has practiced in her own time and applies to the market research company. She is hired because she has proven proficiency in data analysis. The company has a fresh outlook from her perspective and is also fortunate to receive a grant from Get Youth Working for hiring a youth.
The Community: Define your community, local or international, that you will work on behalf of. What population is affected? Are there other organizations working in this space?
The Vancouver community will be the initial community we will target, as we are able to meet with both students and employers in the region. The population that will be affected is youth, specifically upper year students and recent post-secondary graduates. There are organizations working in this space including organizations like Get Youth Working as well as career centres at post-secondary institutions. What sets us apart from these groups is that we are in the same position as these grads so we can understand them and their grad fears better than any other generation. The Get Youth Working program focuses on younger youth for their job postings. Career centres are limited and stretched to help all students with all barriers and backgrounds on a campus, whereas we are focused.
Founding Story: What inspired your venture? Why?
As university students, we have personally seen the way the job market is affecting youth. Seeing the students around us worry about the job market and their ability to obtain a job, and we have also seen recent graduates who are struggling to find work. Students are trying to work, volunteer, do extracurricular activities, etc. all while taking a full class load, in order to try and better themselves for when they graduate. Recent grads are faced with rejections and entry-level positions that they do not qualify for. Being surrounded by this constant worry has led us to become extremely passionate about helping youth find meaningful work.
What is your long-term vision for your Venture?
Our long-term vision for our venture is to expand nationally and to help put a dent in youth unemployment. We want to become a premier service that both students and employers turn to in order to find the right candidates and the right jobs.
Define your company, program, service, or product in 1-2 short sentences
We bridge the gap between youth and companies by providing youth with practical skills for the workplace and showing companies the benefits youth provide.
مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءWhat do you want to accomplish in your first year?
In 12 months we want to have found out which industries post-sec grads are struggling the most in and which employers are interested and willing to hire youth, but need additional support and prepared students. We want to work closely with grads to follow their stories and identify the strengths and weaknesses of our pilot program. We can learn from and improve upon this pilot and by the end of the 12 months we hope to have built a successful working model through our pilot that we can then expand into other career centres and cities while working within the industries that we have identified need it the most.
Winning entries present a strong plan for how they will achieve and track growth. Identify your six-month milestone for growing your impact
Our 6 month milestone will be to complete the research to identify what is contributing to youth unemployment.
المهمة الأولى
Analysis of unemployment markets
المهمة الثانية
Hold 6 focus groups, with 7-10 individuals each
المهمة الثالثة
Meetings with potential business partners and career centres
Now think bigger! Identify your 12-month impact milestone
By our 12-month milestone, we will have completed our first pilot and have iterated our program based on the results.
المهمة الثانية
Continue meetings with potential business partners and university career centres
المهمة الثالثة
Online website created where attendees from workshops can continue the conversation
مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءHow will your Venture define success in the short term (1-12 months)?
In the short term we will define success by having the market research completed to show us which area is the greatest need. This will include an analysis of the national/provincial/local stats on youth unemployment to give us a snapshot of the current state. In addition, a documented “business case” will be created to provide to employers on why it makes sense to partner with us and find the right youth for their organization.
In the long-term (1 year?)
Our long-term definition of success includes working through a pilot project to help us better understand and identify the barriers and opportunities we will face. This will give us a better understanding of iterations we will need to make, and will allow us to create a model that works and is successful based on our research and testing of assumptions.
How will you measure success?
In the short-term, we will measure success by completing our research, having help 6 focus groups with youth and signing on 2 business partners and one career centre.
In the long-term, we will measure success by completing our pilot project in one industry. In addition, we will complete pre and post surveys and video interviews to document the students' growth and identify their remaining weaknesses so we can improve these gaps for the next stage. We want to help a minimum of 2 students get hired. In addition to the business partners and career centres from the short-term, we hope to gain interest from at least one new business partner and one new career centre.
Why?
We need to focus both on strong research as well as actions through the pilot project to plan for long-term success.
Our experience in Haiti in humanitarian development projects, previous experience in other organizations, allied to discussions and reflections held with people who share the same interests, generated a workable idea and helped mature the underlying judgment.
Employment has been the first quest for human development: be it wage employment or self-employment through engagement to one's self undertaking in any sector: agriculture, mining, tree farms, food crops, small crafts, and so on.
Of all the demographic groups, youths have been the group which suffers considerably, with other challenges, lack of decent jobs has been an alarming challenge to the wider global perspective.

The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
Kenya has a huge number of struggling creatives, handicraft artisans, ‘jua-kali’ artisans in the cottage industries, film artistes and musicians who are trying to eke a living with their talent. Even artistes who studied abroad who’ve come back home are challenged to find jobs & use their skills for viable entrepreneurial endeavors. Some even give up and end up taking jobs in other professions. Others just resign to using their talent as a hobby.
As a professional designer, I have spoken to a good number of these Creatives, some of their projects are life-changing or entrepreneurial. They are merely hindered to realize their full potential because they lack the funds to actualize their ideas. What they simply need is monetary aid.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
LOCOLIZE is passionate about funding local Creativity. An overview of LOCOLIZE business:
1. Crowd funding platform for African 'Project Creators. Our goal is to fund not just great ideas, but those that have entrepreneurial potential. 100% of the funds (less LOCOLIZE marketing fee + transaction fee) will go into facilitating the realization of their dreams and motivate them to pursue their talent.
2. Provide a ‘digital + entrepreneurial launch pad’ for exceptionally talented people. This global exposure will give the Creatives a more open market to get noticed and excel in their careers.
3. The LOCOLIZE Team of expert Designers/Creatives will be providing coaching and mentorship to each of the Creators as they ensure that they follow through with their projects. LOCOLIZE shall be holding mentoring workshop with these Creatives on a monthly basis.
4. Curate and award the best of the best ideas - those that stood out - in the year at an Annual LocoMoto Africa Awards Ceremony.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
No such crowd funding organization exists in Africa, one that is totally dedicated to Creatives needs.
Crowd funding is relatively new in this market. However, this is not a novel concept. Africans have been pooling finances together as community to aid a smart child pursue higher learning, or even help couples to pay for dowry/ marry. Together making an impact, a difference. Moreover, the use of mobile phones in this continent is soon making cashless economy a reality.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
Keith is a young ambitious film producer, in his late 20’s, he recently completed his studies in New York School of Film & decided to come back to Kenya 2 year’s ago. He did an internship at a popular agency & after 3 months the agency informed him they couldn't hire him.
He started making his own short films. One day, he is introduced to a friend who happens to know about LOCOLIZE. He simply logs onto their website and opens his Project Idea account. He uploads his film trailer and makes a request of how he needs to fund his tours to screen the films in schools. He then writes a short synopsis of the film. Ocne he had done that, he then tailor makes a few ‘zawadi’ (rewards) that he can share to say thank you to his potential funders once he gets the funding.
Once he submits the form, LOCOLIZE will have the project/ idea incubate for 2 – 3 days where a panel of 5 expert Creatives will assess its viability, authenticity, what makes it remarkable and ‘fundworthy’. If it passes this test it will be made public to the audience who will be able to fund the project. Locolize will also leverage on Social Media, Twitter and its blog www.locolize.wordpress.com
Funders will make their pledges and when the deadline ends, the money will be credited to Keith's account.
Meanwhile, Keith will be assigned a personal Creative Guru from the expert panelist who will mentor him and follow-up with him to ensure he completes his project and keeps his 'zawadi' promise to the funders. Locolize will then curate his work and use it as an inspiration for anyone visiting the website.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
Online transactions is still seen as a new way of transaction. But with the adoption of MPesa is a good avenue to adopt for sending money so as not to lock out the peri-urban, middle class and low income earners from participating. Locolize is in the progress of negotiating with players such as MPesa, PesaPal Digital African Arts in seeking collaborations
Though they may appear to be hugely popular and established platforms in the West; Kickstarter, Indiegogo, RocketHub are little known. (i.e. To participate on KickStarter, one has to have a Social Security No. which locks out anyone who doesn't have it).
Locolize is different because it will adopt models that are relevant to the African market.
This Entry is about (Issues)
مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءFounding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.
There is a huge number of Youth in Kenya who are 'hustling' to make ends meet. Most of the ideas are in the creative arts industry i.e. Djaying small gigs, Calligraphy, Fashion Line etc. Most of these ventures are really exceptional, and they have big dreams of changing the world. Also most of them want to be creative entrepreneurs rather than wait to get jobs.
But the biggest hinderance for them is lack of funds to realize their dreams. We felt this need was reciprocated across the board, from the youth, professionals and even in the cottage industry. On the flip side, Africa is a community that believes, 'all the children in the village are our child' and there is a spirit of giving & caring for other. We believe that this extends to financing an idea that one will believe in. Since the coming of MPesa, we are seeing successfully funded social causes e.g. KenyansforKenya, #BringZackBackHome etc
If crowd funding works for social causes it can work for entrepreneurial ideas!
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
So far the idea is maturing into a potential pilot study:
1. Liaising with Project creators, have committed to funding www.nkt.co.ke transportation for actors fees through my own private donations
2. Also using my own resources to startup the website
3. Conducting an online survey that will give me more perspective with what Creatives want
4. Doing one-on-one interviews with potential and credible ‘Project Creators’ and ‘Funders’ to start off the pilot
5. Looking for an expert team of Co-Founders
6. Finishing drafting a comprenehsive Business Plan
7. Locolize blog getting 'eyeballs' and viewers are encouraging me to go on with the idea as they feel its different, refreshing and gives Creatives an avenue to seek funding for their projects in the Continent
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
1. Use Mpesa mainly as a means for funding EA project and areas with access to MPesa.
2. Pilot will be to have 'Project Creators from Kenya and then spill over to the rest of Africa in 3 year.
3. Coaching and mentoring to exceptional ideas, showcased on Locolize (whether they are successfully funded or not)
4. Develope a full proof, integrity crowdfunding website that is easy to comprehend and easy to fill by semi - literate to literate Africans
5. Seek partnerships (monetary and in kind) with flagship brands or organizations that are keen to see African creativity offer viable enterprenueral avenues for Locolizes clients
6. Have success stories to tell that will shape society to appreciate the advances and contributions that Creativity makes in Africa.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
Kenyans (Africans in general) dont like admitting that they need help. They need to be prompted. They need real success examples for them to actually see the need of doing something different. But with the use of a credible reputation from a recognized Partner/ Backer and key influencers being used in Social Media. Locolize can turn around the perception & have both 'project creators' and 'funders' on board.
Also there online transaction is still a novel concept. But with the coming of MPesa to make transaction (a mobile based money transfer & microfinancing service for Safaricom, the largest mobile network operator in Kenya and Tanzania.) we see a nation that is steadily embracing and relying on mobile phone transactions. Our pilot phase will focus on using Mpesa platforms for funding.
مزيد من المعلومات↓↑ إخفاء↑ إخفاءWhat is the benefit or value you're creating for your business?
Mentoring creators and ensuring that they have the right skills and knowledge of how to go about being entrepreneurs. The core team volunteers this and it's a way of giving back to society through use of our skills
Enlightenment by showcasing the best projects/ideas ultimately inspiring young, upcoming artistes in Africa.
A focal point where Investors can get a portfolio of great African talent and hopeful fund these exceptional ideas
Affiliation of putting African Creativity on the map and give it the reputation and status it deserves.
How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
Currently I am assuming different roles ie. Marketer, designer, manager and resource seeker for Locolize. Also collaborating and networking with Afritorial, Africandigitalarts, Safaricom and other African creative partners in harnessing my platform to a larger audience. Dedicate roughly 3-4 hours a day just following up on what needs to be done on Locolize. I have put in place legal requirements, website domain (website is underway), a blog and using my social media network to broadcast my platform.
For financing, I am using my own money and doing small graphic jobs for people to raise funds that I put back into the expenses incurred during this set-up phase. Also I am collecting a database of potential ‘LocoCreators’.
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
So far the portal and domain is in progress but the CrowdFunding platform is yet to be integrated. Coding for this platform is fundamental, complex and is costly. For Locolize to have a successful of launch this platform needs to be in place. 30% of the funds will go into completion of the website.
50% of the funds goes to Locolize’s strategy where the first 30 projects that will be placed on the portal get a 50% funding each, from Locolize. This will not only boost the morale of the LocoCreators who would have ‘pioneered’ but also facilitate ‘hits’ and potential funders to also recognize our platform.
The rest of the 20% of the funds will go into website maintenance, iMac station, software & backups, stationary, financial books, legal consultation, meetings with potential clients
Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.
Creative Gurus are fundamental to my platform. Still seeking the right team to champion the judging and mentorship forums
PesaPal - Transaction partner whom im negotiating a minimum price on fees charged to LocoCreators
MPesa - Integration that will make it possible for anyone to easily give as little as 5 shillings to fund any LocoCreators
AfricanDigitalArts & Afrotorial, Scanad - These are creative partners whom I can leverage my business and tap into their networks
What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
Creative networks & contact sharing - most of my friends are giving me ‘leads’ of gurus in the entrepreneurship industry and potential LocoCreators. Have a database of over 70 creatives. The team member is volunteering to critic logo design, visuals & branding elements that will be suitable and appropriate for the brand. Legal is being done pro-bono by a friend, she shall invoice later. Mpesa/PesaPal is willing to come on board and have sent costs & plans of their model
Crowd funding is relatively new in this market. However, this is not a novel concept. For many years, Africans have been pooling finances together as community to aid a smart child pursue higher learning, bury a family member or even make it possible for couples to pay dowry & marry.
‘Harambee, is a common Kenyan tradition of community self-help event that means “Pulling together Africa Style”. The concept of ‘Harambee’ is of people coming together, each bringing whatever they have, together making an impact, a difference.
The BC Women in Energy Network fosters the success of women in the energy industry and seeks to support the development of a green economy based on clean tech.
Our work at Community Micro Lending is to implement the very old-fashioned principle of neighbours helping neighbours. We do this through our local peer-to-peer micro lending and mentorship program where local people lend money to other local people for the start-up of small local businesses. We see it like this: Small local businesses are the backbone of a new economy. Local is about sharing a place. It’s in everyone’s best interests for their place to be strong.
My idea is to start an online vocational training/civic engagement match program with multinational corporations (MNCs), universities, and university students as partners. MNCs benefit from fresh and cost-effective knowledge, universities offer unique opportunities to their students, and students win most through building practical skill-sets by hands-on experience on projects with social impact.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
There are currently no integral re-socialization’s mechanisms for prisoners in Costa Rica. Existing work or educational programs within prisons, don’t guarantee reemployment. Therefore, when prisoners get out of jail, they face a second sentence: social rejection.
Unable to find a job, they reoffend as the only way to support their family. So they back to prison and collapse even further the prison system. By May 2010, the prison overcrowding, according to the Ombudsman, amounted to 31% and citizen insecurity had an accelerated growth rate.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Nueva Oportunidad aims to create a business incubator model adapted to a penal institution for prisoners close to serve sentence, incubate their business ideas and have a real job option when they serve their sentence. Encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit in penitentiary institutions, inmates are no longer conceived as criminals. They become entrepreneurs, breaking a social common paradigm about people in prison.
This model was developed in three stages: technical advice, funding and monitoring.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
Nueva Oportunidad is an innovative project of social re-insertion that breaks the assistance culture to empower an excluded population, the prisoners, to be leaders in their own re-socialization process.
The process has the following stages:
1. Permissions and accreditations: we coordinate permissions and alliances with the Ministry of Justice and Peace.
2. Make the project suitable for the prison institution: we study the prison institution’s conditions to adjust the program to it.
3. Talks and workshops “Wakening up dreamers”: experiential courses for at least 20 people each, about motivation, leadership and values. Their goal is to create an idea incubator and “wake up dreamers”.
4. Reception of proposals of courses’ beneficiaries: we receive business ideas and select at least 20 of them to be incubated.
5. Incubation: we incubate business ideas, to study their viability and feasibility.
6. Link with investors: we connect the inmate, already out of prison, with banks, donors, investors and sponsors to get the first capital injection for his enterprise. This funding can be non-refundable.
7. Monitoring: we support the enterprise in its first managing steps.
All of this stages achieve social impact, breaks a violence circle and gives a solution to an excluded population.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.
Nueva Oportunidad arises in the context of UNA Entrepreneurs program, in the National University of Costa Rica. I took this “Entrepreneurs” course being Administration student.
As a Law student also, I have always been interested in Criminal Laws.
In this course I was asked to create a model of social, industry or services business. I wanted to stop being part of the population which only criticizes and provide solutions.
Visiting prisons I investigated about which was the major fear of the inmates. The answer was not being able to find a job. That’s how Nueva Oportunidad came up.

The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
Social: Employment. Indonesia is a the fourth most populous country in the world, and this population needs livelihood to strive everyday live.
Environmental: (Non)renewable resources. We are damaging the earth by extracting natural resources, to make huge amount of products that harmful for the environment. We make products that worn out faster than renewing. Products that cannot return to the earth naturally, creating even more damage in the form of waste, one of the most significant legacy of our contemporary society.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
I am proposing an idea for environmental problem in gardening for orchid lovers. Orchid lovers use tree fern (Cyatheales) bark for planting medium. It is one of the most favorable product thanks to its character. The product itself is being collected from nature by cutting the plant down. It is a renewable resource, yet it take a long time to grow. In the island of Java, Indonesia, we now face the decrease of tree fern population, due to over exploitation.
As an orchid lover myself, I feel the need to find better alternative. Then I have this idea, using a very strong natural fiber from the plant of Arenga pinnata to substitute tree fern planting medium. This material is so strong, it last hundred of years in tropical climate. It can be made to imitate the character of tree fern planting medium by using craft technique. The result is an eco friendly product made by hand, the source of livelihood for the craftperson.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
It potentially creates more employment, and ecological approach is something relatively new for my company (even for my country).
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
My competitor is industry which made product substitute for tree fern planting medium. They made artificial product from recycled PET. The product is made by machine, so create less employment. The most interesting thing is, it actually not recycled product yet downcycled, and it is not good enough for the greener and better future.

My "aha" moment is when I was walking around a local village in my home country, and saw a traditional house with Arenga pinnata fiber in its roof. The house is a hundred years old, in a very good shape. I saw a natural (fiber) material that last so long, I never knew before.
