What is your idea? What makes your project innovative? Why is it important?

2009 is the 20th anniversary of the Convention of the Rights of the Child (CRC). The CRC is the first legally binding international instrument to incorporate the full range of human rights – civil, cultural, economic, political, and social rights. It was adopted by the United Nations in 1989 when world leaders felt that children needed a specific convention since their rights were so often overlooked. The CRC spells out the basic human rights that children everywhere should have: • The right to survival • The right to develop to the fullest • The right to be protected from harmful influences, abuse, and exploitation • The right to participate fully in family, cultural, and social life In honor of the 20th anniversary of this important document UNICEF is using its oneminutesjr initiative to get perspectives from young people around the world. The videos by the children of Pittsburgh through the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh will serve as the exclusive voice from the United States. The videos will be featured in local public places, but will also raise the world’s awareness of Pittsburgh and its youth. Additionally, the videos will be featured on UNICEF’s website on the 20th anniversary of the CRC. The top videos will be selected for inclusion on the Top CRC oneminutesjr compilation that will be distributed to all UNICEF offices and made available to broadcasters around the world.
The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and UNICEF will collaborate on the creation of a youth video project. This project will feature the video work of 20 Pittsburgh youth through the production of oneminutesjr. videos. Oneminutesjr videos are sixty-second videos made by young people between the ages of 12 and 20 from all over the world. One Minute Voices from Pittsburgh will be the exclusive American voice of the 20th anniversary of the CRC.

One Minute Voices from Pittsburgh gives young people, especially those who are under-privileged, the opportunity to have their voices heard and to share their ideas, dreams, fascinations, anxieties, and viewpoints of the world.

The creative and production processes equip the young filmmakers with the fundamental skill of self-expression that is needed to fully participate in society. Through a five-day workshop, visual artists work with a group of young people recruited by the Children’s Museum through the Museum’s after-school youth programs to:

• teach them basic camera and production skills
• develop their idea and film
• edit and produce each participant’s one-minute final film

The sixty second videos are positive and powerful examples of the way visual arts integrated with technology work as a communication tool across cultural, geographic, and national borders.

What will be the impact of your idea?

The One Minute Voices from Pittsburgh will be the only American representation which will showcase our great city to the world. The oneminutesjr format is a unique opportunity that gives credence to the voices of young people and empowers them to tell their own stories. The video artists listen to the youth and work with them to support their ideas. In particular, the oneminutesjr video project will:

• Encourage youth expression, motivating young people to articulate their opinions and concerns about their Pittsburgh communities, their environments, and about life itself
• Create an international platform for visual communication and exchange of one-minute messages
• Create the opportunity for all young citizens from Pittsburgh to speak out and make their voices heard by a broad and diverse audience
• Provide a safe space for informal learning, innovation, and creativity
• Stimulate networking, debate, and discussion
• Bridge the gap between the media, the arts and young Pittsburgh people on a world stage
• Involve marginalized young people and empower them to participate in opinion-making processes

What will it take to launch your idea? How will you secure community support and youth participation?

The Museum has direct access to youth though its YouthALIVE! program. The Museums’s fifteen year-old YouthALIVE! program offers activities for youth between the ages of 10 and 18 that help them explore their interests, discover their potential, develop their talents and abilities, and enhance their skills through meaningful experiences.

A unique component of the YouthALIVE! afterschool program is the Summer Volunteen program that offers teens the opportunity to volunteer both at the Museum and at Outreach festivals during the summer. Of special note, this is the only local summer program that connects suburban and inner city youth for a diverse volunteer experience, resume building skills and fun career exploration.

The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh prototyped the oneminutesjr initiative successfully last year. To see more, please visit www.youtube.com/pghkids.

We will secure support through these initiatives and others such as Youth Works, an excellent network of built-in community neighbors, and the Pittsburgh Public Schools.

We are looking for ideas from people who can make them happen. Tell us about yourself or your team.

The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh is a proven model of success for children’s museums across the country. With accolades in architecture, urban design, leadership, programming and partnerships, the Children’s Museum now leads the way among children’s museums nationally. The Children’s Museum is an internationally recognized institution housed in a world-class structure making real innovative strides in the children’s museum field.

The Children’s Museum has received many prestigious awards and grants for its strong exhibits and programs, its collaboration with other organizations on child-based projects, and its fresh vision, but it’s the Museum’s impressive attendance during these tough economic times that is really telling. Families need a place of refuge. And they feel safe and welcome at our Museum.

Lois Winslow is the Director of Education and has worked at the Children’s Museum for over 20 years, with the last ten spent as Director. Winslow is responsible for the development, supervision, budget, and administration of all public and outreach educational programs.
