What a great idea!!!  So positive.  I would say that educational piece IS involved in it-- Students working with artists and learning history and aspects of mural art here and in Latin America.  I long to see this project come to fruition!!  Postive Voices!!

This is a great idea:  murals have a long tradition in Latin American Art, it gives increased visibility to a growing segment of the population, and it helps local youth contribute to the environment is a positive way, engaging them with a central Pittsburgh institution.  Hooray!

I am writing to express my strong support for the project Pittsburgh Through Latino Eyes.”

I would like to encourage and support your work. Art is one of the best ways for a host community to incorporate the ideas and concepts of multiculturalism.

We often here that young people are the future, but we need to realize they are here in THE PRESENT and we need to embrace their ideas and energy now, if we want a better future.

I look forward to hearing that you have been successful in obtaining support.

Regards

Karina Zelaya

There is absolutely nothing more engaging than a group art project for young people and the fact that their work will be very visible to thousands of people each day who live, work, play, shop, and just drive through the largest residential neighborhood in Pittsburgh will give the young people additional motivation and interest.

This is yet another way that Pittsburgh celebrates its tremendous diversity and welcomes the young Latinos to the community.

I think it would be great to have a mural go up in Pittsburgh, especially by the Youth Latino group.  I hope it goes through!

Given the strong history of murals in Mexico in particular, and the near-invisibility of the Latino community in Pittsburgh, this mural is a wonderful idea.  What a great way for Pittsburghers to get to know their neighbors, and for Latino youth to express themselves proudly, and for Pittsburgh to become aware of some of its own diversity.  Hurray for this effort.

This is a great group of kids, very energetic and enthusiastic, and they do not yet feel part of the Pittsburgh community.  Give them a chance to express themselves and their culture.  This is a unique new voice on the Pittsburgh scene!

What a wonderful idea!  I am thrilled to offer support for a mural focused on empowering and recognizing the diverse group of young people in our community.

This is a great way for young people to let us know what they think matters while also learning about an important critical tradition in Latin American public art. It has my strong support. Good luck to everyone involved.

This is great, because Muralismo in Mexico was an important art expression of the working class, thru the eyes of David Alfaro Siquerios and Diego Rivera, among other followers of the movement.Do you remember the big Mural destroyed at the Rockefeller Center in NY? I Just happened because it was showing the reality of the Latino working class in the USA. (Check Frida’s Khalo Movie)

Well we Latinos are a real community in Pittsburgh and this proposal will show that Latinos in Pittsburgh are not Graffiti delinquents attempting against the visual environment.

¡Hola!

I think this is a great idea! It would also be good to think about the possibility of both a permanent and traveling wall, given the dispersed nature of the Latino community in the area. Portable walls would allow youth from the different communities to participate in situ, as well as in some permanent place.

As many people have already said, murals are an important part of the Latin American tradition, and there is also a mural tradition in many different neighborhoods in Pittsburgh. Most of them document the community, its origins and arrival, its cultures, history, and present presence in the city.

I would recommend contacting Tim Dawson at CMU about his contacts with Latino youth in the area through his involvement with Teatro Latino de Pittsburgh (his own group he worked with last year and in the Fall semester).

Also, my own son has a lot of experience with murals and grafitti, both solo and in a group.

¡Buena suerte!

What a wonderful opportunity to link the Pittsburgh community at large with the Latin American population living in Pittsburgh...through the arts and culture.

With the Census 2010, Pittsburgh will find it is more diverse and more international than before which helps the city in attracting top organizations, events and corporations.

My vote of support goes very strong for the Pittsburgh Through Latino Eyes Mural project.

Go Pittsburgh! Go Latin America!

We are visible and here to stay.  We make up the diversity of Pittsburgh and all that it has to offer.  Pittsburgh is a family oriented city that will soon become Kidsburgh!  We bring color, taste, music and culture all together in a variety of packages.  Latino is not only one country, it is all of our countries together.  It is about time we bring a piece of our world to share with Pittsburgh history, as others have done in the past.  Pittsburgh is a city build by immigrants, we are just the "new" kids on the block.  Who better to tell our story, than our youth!  Si se puede!!!

With love,  Gloria

I applaud the organizers who are moving this project forward.  It has the potential to enrich those who visit or reside in the Pittsburgh area by broadening their awareness and promoting diversity

This is a project that is as compelling, and important, as it is ambitious.  It proposes to use mural-making not only as a forum for community-building and outreach, but also as a forum for education in the broadest sense--of the Jóvenes Latinos, of the latino community, and of wider publics in Pittsburgh and beyond.  Speaking as the future director of Carnegie Mellon's Center for the Arts in Society (beginning August 2009), I hope that there is some way that we at CMU can help to support this initiative as it takes shape.

Sincerely,

Paul Eiss
