Innovation
What is your idea? What makes your project innovative? Why is it important?
I am interested in partnering with youth to create virtual portraits from the words that they use to represent themselves virtually through status updates on sites like Facebook. These short posts are self-created identities that build over time that the individual is able to control in shaping their virtual persona. The public art piece will use these posts from collaborating youth to create circular abstract images of their words that have been converted to light in a way that keeps their voices private, yet represented. Video and still photographs will be taken from LEDs converting words to light of youth voices. Their words will also be solicited through online forums on topics of interest to them and will be incorporated into the final piece.
A small group of young artists will be selected as interns that work individually with myself on the project. They will also organize the second, larger group of youth collaborators who will be involved in the project online.
Impact
What will be the impact of your idea?
The project will impact youth through promoting digital literacy, expressions of their voices, and hands-on experiences in art. The online Fan pages will be used as a forum for youth voices to be heard on subjects deemed important to them. The interns will help to choose subjects that the project will combine via the online forum with the virtual personas as seen through status updates. As the Fan pages can be made public, the voices of the youth will be able to be heard across the region. The final piece will combine text the photo/video imagery to create a video piece for public projection or LED display.
In addition to the video, the project will exist online as a separate website. The website will include documentation of the project through in-progress video clips created by the youth interns, a map where the first names and locations of the participants can be linked to their neighborhood in the region, and an online version of the video piece.
What will it take to launch your idea? How will you secure community support and youth participation?
To launch the project, a preliminary website will need to be created that can be used to market the project to youth collaborators. This page will then need to be linked to Fan pages that will be created on Facebook and Myspace.
To find the youth that will be interns, a call will be put out to local art teachers, arts organizations such as Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, and other youth orientated art programs, such as AAP’s VACOP program, to find students interested in working in a hands-on way with the project. They will fill out an application to become an intern that lists their motivation and previous art experiences. This group of youth will be targeted towards those interested in the arts, as they will help with the creation of the piece. The larger pool of youth collaborators will be open to any youth from the 5 county region via the web.
In additional to the 25,000 grant, support will be needed be for a location donor that may also be willing to support electrical costs.

Sustainability
We are looking for ideas from people who can make them happen. Tell us about yourself or your team.
I am a Pittsburgh based artist who is interested in the creation of digital identity in contemporary culture. The proposal for this idea stems from myself as an individual artist, but existing connections to local organizations will allow for a collaborative team to be built.
Marketing the project to potential youth interns and participants will be important early in the project. This will be done through Facebook and Myspace Fan pages, email blasts to local teachers in and out of the arts, flyers, and press releases. Interested interns will submit a brief application and a small group will be selected. Partnerships from local arts organizations will be solicited to find appropriate space and equipment for the interns to use to create the project. We will continue marketing via social networks, start to shoot photo and video imagery of youth voices, digitally edit imagery to create the finished moving video light piece, and work to finalize a site and install the piece.
