The Korku Panchayat initiative is laudable and calls for further examination of the continuing prevalence of customary law and oral traditions among India's tribal populations. While access to finance is being facilitated through the SHG movement and microfinance in India, tribal populations and disadvantaged groups in remote regions are still being bypassed for want of adequate outreach activities and inclusive policies. In the face of such neglect, the Korku Panchayat's efforts at self-help are commendable and an eye opener --pointing to the wisdom of such indigenous practices. Development workers in other remote tribal belts would benefit from further exploring the model of financial self-reliance initiated by tke Korku people. The government would also benefit from a study of such local customs and traditions if it is sincere in its efforts to reach out to the 'last man'.
