Labor

Here's a story about how members of the Changemakers community are working to ensure that labor benefits rather than exploits people and the environment:

Every year innumerable women disappear into the throes of sexual slavery yearly and millions of children are forced into child labor, but you can help put an end to this global blight by looking for ways to buy goods approved by organizations such as RugMark, The Emancipation Network, and TransFair USA.

These three Changemakers competition finalists are featured in the following video that shows how they are supporting economic freedom and justice for some of the world's most vulnerable populations.

What makes your idea unique?

The village laborers are involving their most of their time in fighting with each other, communal clashes, sex addiction, drug addiction, used by Political meeting(by giving some amount and one day meals). They are practiced to avail all the benefits on FREE. Hence, they are not ready to do hard work and wanted to earn much profit on a short period. Due to this they are using unwanted chemical manures to spoil the health of humans. The practice of wasting the time by seeing the TV serials, chat with another, etc. will be reduced. They practice to get some self awareness while doing any work on group. Sharing their views on various matters will lead to healthy environment.

What impact have you had?

Every person should allot some space or at least plant in mud pots will give strenth to the family members. They can get the fresh vegetables or greens from their kitchen garden itself. Or they can use their neighbour houses for this purpose. In which, the relationship will be developed. The waste water, vegetable wastes are putting as manures for the small plants. Communual violence, idleness, etc. will be reduced. By this formation of Kitchen garden Group, the real economically backward people will benefitted. Helping, compassion, Our future generation (our children) should know the real culture and helping tendency, compassion on fellow humans and the fruit of the Spirit such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Problem

The strength is fresh vegetables. The weakness is regular quantity will not get from kitchen garden(for such option, we can use the fresh veg market). Threat will be coming from big farmers or villagers. Opportunity will be increasing as well as the health of the family members will develop. I am expecting a bright future generation if we use this Kitchen Garden Group.

Actions

The kitchen garden techniq to be adopted as hobby. Physical work may increase health and the concentration on work will give them mental health. This work to be undertaken at least everyday 30 mimutes. In which, the family will get weekly 3 to 4 days or even everyday vegetables.

Results

Self Help Group may be arranged and around 10 to 15 ladies will assemble in a house, where sufficient place is available for planting such kitchen garden veg & greens. The income and expenses may be shared among them. This unity will give them psychological strenth.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

The idel time will be reduced and the practice of FREE to be vanished from the minds of the housewives and idle gents. Regular plantation and understanding will be developed among one another without seeing any caste, creed and colour.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

I believe the most of the village labours are practiced idleness, hence they sit and drink tea shops and arrack(tasmark) shops. Hence, the crimes are increasing. They might be the prevented this and this can be tackled by their wife's and family members. Even drunkards are reducing.

What makes your idea unique?

Historically, Society has discriminated against mental illness, with some cultural groups equating the condition to being influenced or possessed by forces of evil. Today, there is a move towards a change in attitude however we are still finding that many myths prevail about mental health disorders. Durban and Coastal Mental Health seeks to dispel these myths, challenge the discrimination and change Society’s attitude to people who have a Mental Health disorder. The Supported Employment Programme is targeted at empowering individuals with mental health disorder to develop the socio- emotional capacity and vocational skills necessary for finding employment in the open labour market. By tapping the hidden potential of these individuals, we focus on their Ability and not their Disability. As the largest Mental Health Organization in South Africa we are committed to advocating for policy and legislative changes that will promote the rights of people with disability to access jobs in the open market system. Our Programme offers a range of strategies that facilitate economic empowerment and self sufficiency for people with disability. Furthermore it helps to foster a change in attitude within the corporate sector. The idea is to change the thinking of employers and society with each successful placement and to open up a vista of opportunities for employment for people with mental health disorders.

Do you have a patent for this idea?

Impact

read more↑ hide↑ hide

What impact have you had?

- The Programme affords people with mental health disorders the opportunity to improve their socio emotional functioning and financial circumstances, increase their economic independence and reduce dependence on social grants.
- 17 Mental Health Care Users were placed in factories whilst receiving support from the Organization. 4 of them have been employed by their companies on a permanent basis, and are no longer dependent on disability grants and are now BREADWINNERS.
This groundbreaking group has shown that persons with mental health disorders are capable of making a successful transition from protective employment to working in a competitive open labour market, and are paving the way for other Mental Health Care Users to follow in their footsteps.
- Through the Blockmaking Project, 75 people with mental health disorders, from disadvantaged communities, developed skills in making concrete blocks and bricks.
- Community gardening, sewing and beadwork projects involving 21 Mental Health Care Users in the poverty pockets of Amaoti and KwaMashu, have been implemented.
- 124 service users perform tasks related to cleaning, laundry, maintenance and administration within the organization, as part of a jobgrading process.

Problem

- Unemployment results in poverty, possibly leading to substance abuse and crime, all of which results in aggravating the condition of persons with Mental Health Disorders.
- The Service User Employment Programme strives to redress these imbalances by providing psycho-social rehabilitation coupled with a range of strategies for economic empowerment. These include: Factory Placements, Blockmaking Projects, Jobgrading, Community Gardening, Sewing and Beadwork.
- There is a perception that people with a mental health disorder are unable to make a meaningful contribution to the economy. It is this prevailing stereotype that has lead to the marginalization of people with disability and creates barriers to their employment.
- The constitutional right of people with a mental health disorder to be employed is denied by Society’s discrimination against people with Mental Health Disorders.

Actions

In order to enable Mental Health Care Users to become economically self reliant and to develop a sense of selfworth through meaningful occupation, we have initiated our Supported Employment Project. By providing these Mental Health Care Users with support and reasonable accommodation, their placement in these positions have been successful.
Our Factory Placement initiative empowers individuals with mental health disorders to develop the skills necessary for working in the open labour market, initially within the supportive network of our Organization and ultimately as a fully fledged permanent employee of the relevant Company.
Our Psycho-social Rehabilitation Clubs train people to develop home industries. They develop skills in making cushions, decoupage vases, greeting cards, ethnic crafts and corporate gifts.
Community gardening is a strategy employed in our semi rural communities to uplift and equip Mental Health care Users to engage in sustainable income generating initiatives, through growing vegetables.

Results

- Participation in one of the aforementioned strategies will enable Mental Health Care Users to feel more motivated and less depressed as they will be involved in a constructive activity that yields an income. They will also derive benefits from the social aspects of working in a group as opposed to being socially isolated. Individuals who were previously lacking vocational skills will acquire technical skills in brick and block production, gardening, sewing, beadwork, numeracy, etc.
- Skills obtained would place beneficiaries in a stronger position to secure employment.
- The income derived from the chosen strategy would enhance their economic position and enable them to meet their basic needs for food, accommodation, medicine and transport and enjoy an acceptable standard of living.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

2010 – 2011
- Create awareness over the next three years in the corporate sector of the opportunity to draw on a pool of people with disabilities, for employment in their company, to enable them to meet their employment equity compliance requirements.
- Vigorous Marketing of our products at flea markets, local business, houses and trade shows.
- Negotiations with the Ethekwini Municipality in relation to showcasing and selling our products at Stadia during the Fifa 2010.
- Conduct training in Cleaning skills with Mental Health Care Users utilizing a manual and professional service providers.
2011 – 2012
- Develop partnerships with the public sector in order to obtain tenders to supply blocks and bricks to the Department of Housing for the Government’s Housing Projects.
- To employ an occupational therapist for job grading of Mental Health Care Users within our Programmes with a view to their appropriate placement and training.
- To obtain the services of a job coach who would assist employers to understand and implement reasonable accommodations and to assist Mental Health Care Users with their adjustment to the open labour market.
2012 – 2013
- Create Social Enterprises that are economically, humanly, socially and environmentally sustainable and will allow for Mental Health Care Users trained in Blockmaking skills to be absorbed into the labour market.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

Mental Health Care Users sometimes struggle with the idea of complete autonomy and are reluctant to embrace the opportunities to work in the open labour market due to the fear of relapsing. They are also concerned that should they relapse after losing their disability grants, they would be left with no means of supporting themselves. We are therefore advocating for a change in Policy relating to social security.
The economic downturn is impacting negatively on the human resource component of the corporate sector and creates a further barrier to employers’ willingness to employ Mental Health Care Users. Seed funding from Government would be essential to sustaining the project.

We partner with our customers as they assist us in identifying new customers by making referrals. Consequently we are able to acquire new customers to purchase our blocks, and new leads to explore for factory placements.
Training in cleaning skills, blockmaking, craftwork etc. are provided by service providers we have partnered with on other ventures eg. The service provider, to whom we outsource the cleaning of our 8 residential facilities, has compiled a manual and will provide the training to Mental Health Care Users in our Cleaning Project.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?

1. To undertake a new project of a one-stop Service Centre in 2010 in a disadvantaged, rural community of Kwa-Ximba in Hammarsdale due to the growing need in this community. A needs assessment was conducted with all Stakeholders.

We will build a new Day Care Centre for 30 mentally handicapped children with a garden project in 2010. In addition, a Trauma room for Victims of Abuse and two offices for Social Workers from all organizations so that services can be brought to the doorstep of this community.

By 2011 to start a Job Creation Project for persons with Mental Illness. Finally, to build a Halfway House Residential Facility for 20 adults with Mental Illness by 2012.

2. To implement strategies to increase disability equity compliance by :-
Mental Health Care Users undertaking cleaning tasks in the organization. As these Mental Health Care Users already have some skills, to enroll them for the Hygiene and Cleaning Level 1 Learnership so that upon completion of the Learnership they can be placed in an outsourced Cleaning Company, Floline, as a cleaner with the support of a Job Coach. In addition, to set up meetings with the Ethekwini Municipality Human Resource Department to employ persons with disabilities as cleaners who have been trained through the Learnership. This project will be initiated in 2010.

3. To partner with Mental Health Care Users by forming a Business Venture in the form of a Block Making Cooperative in which a percentage of employees are those with mental disabilities. This Business will secure block making contracts within the Business Sector of Building Contractors and within the Department of Housing in the eThekwini Municipality. This Project will be undertaken in 2011.

The Story

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

The defining moment for me was when the Employment Equity Act was promulgated in October 1998, one of its objectives is to eliminate unfair discrimination in employment. In addition, in the Act “designated group” means black people, women and people with disabilities. In respect to the regulations in the Act, 2% of employees that work within “designated employer” company (i.e. a person who employs 50 or more employees) must be persons with disabilities.
I served on the Task Team that compiled the Code of Good Practice on Employment of Persons with Disability in 2002 in the Act and hence, when the much awaited Act was promulgated, I believed that we had an opportunity to improve training and employment opportunities for persons with mental disabilities.
Sadly, people with mental disabilities are at the bottom rung of the employment ladder and seem destined to remain dependent on social assistance even though they are able to make a contribution in the workplace. They face daily exclusion and discrimination on account of the stigma of mental illness.
However, through the provisions of the Act, we are in a position to provide an enabling economic environment through advocating for their employment, accessing funding for work skills training and educating employers about reasonable accommodation as mental disabilities are an invisible disability.

DCMH has done pioneering work in developing employment options. The Workshops have transformed since 1998 from being purely psychosocial rehabilitation projects to job grading the Mental Health Care Users so that those that have the ability can be equipped with meaningful work skills and opportunities that will lead to sustainable employment.
Youth with mental disabilities long for a better future and at DCMH we are committed to ensure that they receive the necessary work skills and opportunities to shape their future.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

Mrs Lalita Harie, Executive Director of Durban and Coastal Mental Health has served the Organization for 30 years. Her passion, love and commitment to working with persons with disability is the reason she has remained in the Organization.
As a visionary leader:
- She has transformed Mental Health services within the Organization and has positioned the Organization in line with equitable, sustainable, appropriate and relevant Mental Health services.
- Placed an emphasis on Consumer Self Advocacy, Skills Training, Economic Empowerment of persons with disability, integration of HIV/Aids into Mental Health Services, Rural Development and Volunteer Training.
- Managed finances within budget successfully and moved a 1.5 million rand overdraft and property loans of 1.1 million to a zero balance in the overdraft and payment of the property loan in 5 years.
- Drove a process of successfully lobbying for an increase in the subsidy rate form the Department of Health from 30 % of the unit cost to 75 %. This new rate was then implemented to every Mental Health Organization in KZN. Lalitha’s achievements and dedication has been recognized with the following awards: -
- Was selected by the American Government in 1998 for a 21 day International Visitors Programme on Mental Health.
- Received a Merit Award from the Hamlet Foundation in 2004.
- Was selected as a Top 25 semi finalist out of 283 applicants for the Boss of the Year Award in 2005.
- Received a Certificate of Recognition at the Inaugral “Standard Bank Salutes the Women of KwaZulu-Natal” campaign.
- Was a finalist in the Nedbank Business Women’s Association in 2008, being the proud recipient of the Regional Business Achievers Awards.

Researchers at Dartmouth College developed the Supported Employment model for people with severe mental illness in the early 1990's. Thresholds was among the first service-providers to implement the program, and the impact was immediate. Our agency has put thousands of people to work.

What makes your idea unique?

Supported Employment is a highly-effective, proven concept that reverses course from the antiquated vocational rehab concepts of sheltered employment and industry-specific job training programs that have been utilized by the psychosocial rehabilitation field for decades.

Do you have a patent for this idea?

What impact have you had?

Supported employment has been a critical ingredient for consumers in their recovery journey. Speaking of the importance of employment in their life, one consumer noted, “Working has given me a sense of responsibility. I am proud of my work and it makes me feel good about myself.” An additional consumer of Thresholds SE services encouraged others to join the employment program by stating, “Never give up on being employed with a disability. It takes strength, and you are taking a step forward. I would say that if someone feels like they were at a point in life that they want to live a decent life-style and overcome mental illness and disability that they should look into the employment program.”

Problem

The unemployment rate for people with severe mental illness hovers around 90% nationally, despite the fact that the vast majority of this population desperately want to work. Research shows the power of work in terms of aiding one’s recovery from mental illness. Yes, we said recovery, in the form of decreased hospitalization, symptom reduction, and increased confidence and self-esteem. This vulnerable population often lacks the necessary educational background, ongoing support, and the kinds of employable skills to make that job a possibility. Spread out over a nation, that’s hundreds of thousands of people ready but unable to work, relying on Social Security Disability Income for their survival.

Actions

Created by Dartmouth researchers and applied by Thresholds throughout the diverse setting of Chicago, Supported Employment has transformed job creation for people with severe mental illness. Our agency's team of Supported Employment Specialists (SES) work with any member who wishes to work by providing a comprehensive assessment of work skills and preferences, assisting in the job search and application process, networking with area employers to find suitable fits, and maintaining on-the-job support if needed. One SES can assist up to 20 job-seekers at a time. Thresholds has a network of nearly 150 companies who understand the benefits of hiring motivate employees, such as Banana Republic, Federal Express, Walgreens, Kohls, etc.

Results

Based on agency intake statistics, an estimated 96% of individuals are unemployed at entry to Thresholds, roughly 50% have no work history, and 5% come to the agency homeless. Of the roughly 3,500 individuals served by the agency last year, 914 received supported employment services. Competitive employment rates for the agency’s SE teams ranged from 18 to 63%, with a total of 283 consumers working at 366 competitive jobs at over 120 businesses in the Chicagoland area. Average wages earned was $9.04 an hour, and the average number of hours worked per week was 22.9

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

Again, we believe we're already experiencing success, albeit on a smaller scale. Plans to grow the program - and increase the number of people transitioned from disability income to independent working status - are focused around a Supported Employment Research and Training Center. The three-year plan is broken into separate stages: Research, Cultivation, and Solicitation. It is as follows:
FY2010 - Finalize the Center's goals and budget, followed by a feasability study;
FY2011 - Roll out silent capital stage, with major funders, committees, and institutional partners; and
FY2012 - Unveil challenge matches and solicit second- and third-tier donors.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

There are challenges to implementing our Supported Employment on a greater scale, both within Thresholds and throughout the mental health field. The truth is, changes in practices in this field come slowly, with estimates placing a near 15-year lag between the identification of an evidence-based practice and its implementation. (There remains less than a 5-year gap within traditional medicine). Also, there's the always looming question of funding, particularly daunting given the State of Illinois' current budget concerns. Without proper funding, the Supported Employment will always be a small revolutionary in terms of finding people jobs and not the industry mainstay it could and should be. For every Supported Employment Specialist we hire, we can work with up to 20 potential job-seekers.

Please tell us more about how these partnerships are critical to the success of your innovation.

Thresholds relies on partnerships to organizations and businesses, government and private funders alike. These collaborations help make us better. Specifically, we enjoy a network of more than 150 area businesses who hire our members. Our 42-person Board of Directors and 80-member Associates Board is essential in creating awareness and revenue sources. As our leading funder, the Department of Mental Health is wonderfully supportive of our recovery efforts.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?

1. We need to halt funding for institutional care. Illinois leads the nation in the practice of "warehousing" people with severe mental illness in nursing homes. At $38,000 a year in costs, this is a waste of money and the potential of every person relegated to this kind of treatment. Community-based programs, like Thresholds, find people jobs, help them go back to school, create housing, and appropriate medical interventions.
2. Create awareness that Supported Employment is successful finding people jobs, where traditional programs have failed.
3. Money. It requires one Supported Employment Specialist for every 20 consumers.

The Story

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

Under the direction of executive director, Jerry Dincin, PhD (1965-2003), Thresholds became increasingly interested in the evaluation of its services for the purposes of program improvement. Studies conducted at Thresholds provided quantitative evidence of the need for effective employment services first understood intuitively by Thresholds founders in the early '60s. Analysis of data collected in the 1980s showed that the percentage of consumers employed at intake to the agency ranged from only three to seven percent. In order to assess the most effective services to address this problem, Thresholds began to conduct research studies comparing employment outcomes of members enrolled in traditional pre-vocational services with those engaged in competitive employment. As study results illustrated the effectiveness of competitive employment over other employment models, Thresholds shifted increasingly toward a “place-train” approach in which consumers obtained competitive jobs in the community and were provided with on-going supports.

Thresholds committed to evidence-based supported employment (EBSE) services beginning with a five-year research study of supported employment in 1999. This study, conducted in conjunction with Dr. Gary Bond from IUPUI and the Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center, demonstrated the greater effectiveness of EBSE in obtaining successful employment outcomes for consumers compared to Thresholds’ previous vocational model. With the arrival of Dr. Tony Zipple as the new Chief Executive Officer in June 2003, Thresholds made a commitment to recovery-based services and to evidence-based supported employment in particular.

What makes your idea unique?

In order to increase the level of communication between the employer and their employee of on sick leave due to mental health issues, we created a book they can send to the employee with a get-well card. Although get-well cards have been used to wish well to employees that are off work due to a physical condition, nothing was done to engage communication with employees of work for mental health reasons.

Do you have a patent for this idea?

What impact have you had?

The book release was done in Montreal at the end of April 2009. Although the book has been on the market only for a little amount of time, the book has reached the best-seller list of books available through the Web Site of the Ordre des conseillers en Ressources humaines et Relations industrielles (Human resources and industrial relations regulatory board in Quebec, Canada). Also, a few disability insurance companies have shown interest in sending this book to insured individuals that are currently on leave for mental health issues to assist them in their recuperation process. Individuals that have read the book have given us excellent feedback, indicating that the book was able to help them play an active role in their recuperation process and has given them hope as they were reading the numerous testimonials available throughout the book.

Problem

The book would need translation (budget of around 5000 to 8000$) from french to english and possibly other languages in order to help a maximum number of people.

Although the sale of this book is already great success and shows great potential for future sales, the authors of the book are getting just a very small amount of the proceeds which makes it impossible for us to have sufficient money to have the book translated. Also, the current publisher is only interested in the french publication of the book, therefore, we are not going to get monetary support from the publisher in the translation project.

Actions

We are entering this contest, which would give us sufficient funds to have the book translated to english, if we were to be one of the 3 contest winners (5000$)!

Also, we will be contacting publishers in Canada and the USA that may be interested in publishing the english version of this book.

Results

Results of this project are pending on the translation of the book.
As for the french version of the book, we have started a campaign in September 2009 to attract large employers in the province of Quebec to send this book, with a get well card, to all their employees that have initiated a leave of absence. One of the problems we have been encountering is that employers would need to have the book available in both french and english in order to send it at large to all employees off leave, both french and english speaking, in order to prevent any form of discrimination on the basis of language.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

Year 1: Translation of the book to english
Year 2: Find a publisher interested in distributing the english version of the book. Organize a book release in english at the National worker's compensation and disability conference &expo.
Continue campaigning to employers in Canada and the USA to train their supervisor / management / HR consultant to keep contact with their employees of leave for mental health issues and have them send the book and a get well card to help initiate and maintain communication during the leave of absence.
Year 3: Consider translation to Spanish since some employers in Canada and USA may require the spanish translation for their spanish speaking employees.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

The current world wide economy makes all employers reluctant in investing in new projects. In order to address this reluctance, we will need to show the employers how an investment of as little of 20$ (book and personalized get-well card) may have a huge impact on the duration of the person's disability and therefore on the direct and indirect cost associated to the leave of absence.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

Training was being given in administrative and industrial settings to train supervisors and managers how to detect employees that may be presenting mental health issues and how to intervene. We were getting constant feedback on the manager's side about the discomfort felt when we would suggest the importance on keeping contact with their employees while they were on a leave of absence. Also, during our practice as rehabilitation consultants, Annick Thibodeau and Melanie Gregoire had noted how most clients would complain about the lack of contact from their employer while they were on sick leave, making them feel unimportant to the employer and left out. we decided to create a low cost idea (get well book accompanied by a personalized get-well card) in order to encourage the communication between the employer and it's employee during the leave of absence.

Melanie Gregoire, M. Sc, registered rehabilitation professional, has been helping for over 15 years employees on leave of absence to improve their help and return to work.
Mylene Gregoire, M. Sc., has been working in the recruiting field for over 10 years. She has been helping people find out their talents and better use them on the employment market.
Annick Thibodeau, occupational therapist, has been helping adults with physical and mental health issues over the past 15 years. She has helped them regain their maximum level of function so they can actively participate in activities significant to them, including work.

What is the likely impact of your idea? (150 words max)

Convert millions of idle travel hours into productive work hours for the benefit of poor communities
Build the capacity and confidence of schools, hospitals, NGOs and small businesses that serve the needs of the world's poorest people
Build long term relations between people in developed and developing countries that could lead into continued interaction long after the visit
Address the big development challenges of the world one task at a time
Empower communities to work their way out of poverty

Why is promoting global travel and engagement important? What makes your idea innovative? (200 words max)

Typical international volunteering has people travelling across the world just for the purpose of volunteering. UsefulVisitors ties into the fact that people are travelling anyways. We seek to convert the amount of travel time spent on worthless activities into more time spent on useful activities. We believe this is also a way to show travellers a deeper experience of the place they are visiting - something more than the air-conditioned tour. Our idea takes tools that exist on the internet and repurpose them. However in doing so, we seek to challenge the assumptions and paradigm that pervades the world of international volunteering. We seek to show that things can be done differently.

Everyday thousands of doctors, designers, architects, teachers, accountants, webdevelopers, nurses, entrepreneurs, fund-raisers, etc fly to developing countries for business, conferences, to visit family and friends or just for pleasure. Through UsefulVisitors, we want to put their skills to use for schools, hospitals, NGOs and small businesses at their destination.

What would it take to launch or spread your idea? How much would it cost to make your idea a reality? (150 words max)

A capable and dedicated team, which is being built as we speak; Developing a web site and eventually a mobile interface with which community organisations can interact with potential travellers; Extensive marketing to build a large database/community of highly skilled professionals willing to use the service as well as a large database/community of schools, NGOs and small businesses seeking assistance; Develop training modules to prepare representatives of the organisations to manage the volunteer matching and hosting process most effectively; We are presently about to prove the concept and need £50,000 to launch it in 3 cities in Africa. We have a business model that sees all stakeholders contributing to run the service based on clear and tangible benefits to their bottomline. The idea is being designed to generate revenue from the start. We also hope to attract investors based on good financial and social returns.

Describe your work as a social innovator (150 words max)

In university I joined youth leadership development NGO, AIESEC and was a member for 8 years leading the organisation's work in Nigeria and Africa. Here I built my passion for youth leadership for social change being engaged in a leadership development, setting up and running social projects in Nigeria and across Africa. Worked for UK Centre for social innovation, The Young Foundation where I set up and managed a youth leadership development programme, UpRising aimed at youths from migrant communities in the UK. I now work with he African Diaspora community increasing their interest to joining in addressing the continent's challenges. I have worked with African and European governments on strategies to involve the African Diaspora in development. I have also been a Climate Change advocate with the British Council.

Describe your idea in fewer than 50 words.

EMPOWER THE VULNERABLE SOCIALLY, ACADEMICALLY, ECONOMICALLY, POLITICALLY AND SPIRITUALLY SO THAT THEY COMPETE FREELY IN ALL LIFE CHALLENGES.

What makes your idea unique?

MY IDEA IS INDIGENOUS AND I AM DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION.I AM PART OF MY COMMUNITY AND SO I AM ABLE TO INTERACT FREELY WITH THE TARGET GROUP AND GET THE FIRST FEEL OF WHAT AFFECTS THEM. I RELY ON WHAT I HAVE IN THE HANDS TO ACHIEVE WHAT I HOPE FOR.

I BELIEVE IN LOVE AND SELF CONVICTION WHEN DEALING WITH THESE SOULS AND I AM THEREFORE ABLE TO HELP THEM JOYOUSLY.

I HAVE MANAGED TO MAKE GROW THE CHARITY WITHOUT ANY KIND OF SUPPORT FROM EXTERNAL OR INDEED INTERNAL SOURCES. I HAVE MANAGED TO PRODUCE BREADWINNERS ALREADY WHO ARE AN ENCOURAGEMENT TO THIS NOBLE CAUSE.THIS IDEA HAS ACHIEVED ALOT.

THE SCHOOL HAS INTRODUCED AN ADULT LITERACY CENTER WHICH HAS SEEN A GOOD NUMBER OF PARENTS ENROLLED INTO DIFFERENT GRADES. THEY HAVE LIKED THE IDEA AND THEIR ACADEMIC RESPONSE IS POSITIVE.

WE ARE RUNNING OUR LESSONS USING AN EASY LEARNING TOOL CALLED"BREAKTHROUGH TO LITERACY". THIS IS A SYSTEM WHICH EMBRACES LEARNING IN A VERNACULAR LANGUAGE. THIS MAKES READING AND WRITING VERY EASY EVEN WHEN IT IS INTRODUCED IN AN OFFICIAL LANGUAGE.
BOTH ADULT PUPILS AND THE REGULAR PUPILS HAVE FOUND THIS TYPE OF LEARNING TO BE VERY INTERESTING.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization? STEP 2:

EQUIP THE SCHOOL WITH MODERN EQUIPMENT SUCH AS SCIENCE AND COMPUTER LABORATORIES IN ORDER TO EXPOSE OUR PUPILS TO FULL TECHNOLOGY AND ALSO ATTRACT MANY FEE-PAYERS WHO ARE THE MAIN SOURCE OF OUR INCOME.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization? STEP 3:

ELECTRIFY THE SCHOOL SO THAT THE PUPILS WILL BE ABLE TO CONNECT TO THE GLOBAL NETWORK THROUGH INTERNET FACILITIES AND ALSO SEE THE PUPILS ACCESS MODERN EDUCATIONAL EQUIPMENTS WHICH NEED THE USE OF POWER(ELECTRICITY).

Describe the expected results of these actions.

EXTEND THE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY TO AS MANY VULNERABLE CHILDREN AND ADULTS THEREBY ERADICATING POVERTY IN MANY LIVELIHOODS.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

I GREW UP IN THESE COMMUNITIES AND MY PARENTS STRUGGLED TO GIVE ME AND THE REST OF MY FAMILY MEMBERS THE HUMBLE EDUCATION THAT WE HAVE TODAY. I HAVE PERSONALLY TESTED POVERTY AND SO I KNOW ITS IMPACT IN UNEXPLAINABLE TERMS.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

THE SOCIAL INNOVATOR BEHIND THIS IDEA IS THAT POVERTY WHICH HAS STRICKEN MOST HOMES IN MY COMMUNITY CAUSING YOUTHS TO RESORT TO SOCIAL VICES SUCH PROMISCUITY, THEFT,DRUNKENNESS AND THEREBY BRINGING FORTH INCURABLE DISEASES SUCH AS HIV/AIDS, SHALL BE REDUCED.

How did you first hear about Changemakers?

I FIRST HEARD ABOUT CHANGE MAKERS THROUGH "TEACH A MAN TO FISH" WHO SENT ME AN INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS COMPETITION.
