Mentorship

Here's a story about how members of the Changemakers community are promoting mentorship in India:

Shaheen Mistri was an 18 year-old American on vacation in India, when she came face-to-face with a level of despair that changed her life.

In Mumbai she saw that slum children get a rotten deal when it comes to school: no water, few working toilets, absent teachers and desks without chairs.  In most schools, there is little or no hope of learning English, the best ticket to a job in this bustling city. Combine this with the hardships of slum life in Mumbai—a shanty for a home that regularly gets bulldozed, inadequate drinking water, hunger, rampant disease and infection, high rates of domestic abuse and alcoholism—and you wonder how half of the children make it to fifth grade.

What will be the impact of your idea?

To promote and harness idea development and implementation will be its root impact. At a local level, the idea is tailored towards taking the 'product' to its 'beneficiaries',just as Companies advertise and sell their products to end-user consumers. Thus through this idea, the product is the diverse ideological blueprints whereas the beneficiaries are the business and companies alike in need of the acquired ideological input.Hence,to achieve this, media plays a role in sensitising the public of the new wave of ideological solutions and the youth behind it.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

Together with Volunteers and registered members organized through a central network, the idea can be implemented to success. This does not forget the input of proffessionals through their mentorship activity within the scheme.
This project requires dedicated pioneers with real passion of appreciating the zeal in youth's thinking and their positivity, unlike the old guards disillusioned with life due to limited chances of success. Thus the project creates a platform for successful endeavors in one's lifetime.Hence, a shift in the mentality of youths about life journey. And in achieving this,I believe I may pioneer this noble move.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

The cost is indefinite, though it actually depends on the ideas' development, scale of resources used in research and development and the membership resource unit as well as the pool of volunteers. However,a rough estimate of $6000 dollars as start-up would boost such a venture of mind resource.

In 1912, shortly after Guglielmo Marconi introduced radio to the world, he said: "The coming of the wireless era will make war impossible, because it will make war ridiculous.” Marconi believed that once we were able to listen to the distant voices of strangers, we would be able to understand and empathize with them.

Almost a century later, one solitary voice – speaking intimately and directly into a microphone – still has the power to transport us into other worlds and lives. The Human News Desk will fuse radio, web, and public outreach to create an innovative first-person news initiative. The radio broadcasts on All Things Considered will reach millions of listeners and serve as gateways to the AudioWiki. There, listeners will be able to share memories and information in sound, images and text, shaping an online narrative, and an ever-evolving social history.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

organization whose broadcast home is NPRs All Things Considered. Over the past 15 years, Radio Diaries has helped to pioneer a form of citizen journalism, working with people to report on their own lives for public radio. This approach has yielded some of the most innovative and well-known documentaries heard on National Public Radio and has helped inspire a movement of first-person documentaries on public radio, winning every major award in broadcast journalism. With the Human News Desk, Radio Diaries and Anayansi Diaz-Cortes are seeking seed funding to take our story-telling approach to a new level.
Since 2005 Anayansi has been vital to the most prolific period Radio Diaries has ever had. As a Mexican born, Miami-native, Anayansi has made a point of working to bring new voices to a national audience. Since then, she has produced more than a dozen documentaries NPR coordinated educational and public outreach programs, and designed and executed an audience development initiative that has expanded the reach and impact of our broadcasts into new markets including students and educators, and international and non-English speaking audiences.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

25,000 from Changemakers WeMedia PitchIt seed funding will help with an estimated 1/6 of our total project budget of 150,000. If granted, we would designate Changemakers support for three aspects of the project: (i) launch of the new media aspects of the Human News Desk: An AudioWiki -- website design, initial beta testing, technology to curate entries. (ii) Several intensive reporting trips to make connections in the communities whose stories we are telling. (ii) Production expenses of working with chosen diarists and story-tellers over months-- research, equipment, training, editing software, transcription, misc production expense. (iii) Two public outreach events that will fuse the web and radio in a public presentation with the subjects of the documentaries. Attendees at our public events will be encouraged to participate in the AudioWiki component of the project.

What will be the impact of your idea?

In Silicon Valley we have CrunchBase (techcrunch) as a platform for finding information about projects. This acts as an important tool for business and helps to link entrepreneurs with the right customers and business partners. In Africa we lack these tools and Afridex aims to fill this gap by making Entrepreneurs and their African projects visible to the world. This project facilitates interaction and brings together the people and resources needed to support business development on the continent. Entrepreneurs are key to economic and social development and its important we use media in a proactive effort to support this process. This is given a difficult context in which most entrepreneurs are left to navigate on their own.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

Afridex is a project of VC4Africa.com and AppfricaLabs. We have joined forces in the effort to bring information about entrepreneurs and their African projects to the web. The team has considerable experience setting up media companies in an African context and builds on an extensive network and foundation of experience and skills suited for this project. I myself have been working in the African media space since 2003 and have been involved in several entrepreneurial projects that have resulted in the establishment of sustainable businesses. Africa Interactive and AfricaNews.com is one of them. Jon Gosier runs a small software team in Kampala that helped develop the prototype and we have the technical skills needed to further launch and maintain this system.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

Afridex can be launched with an investment of 25K.

myImpact.org will scale its online volunteer platform, currently in beta development, allowing volunteers and service organizations to measure and track their impact over time through their social networks, using existing technology including Twitter, Facebook and SMS and answering specific needs that exist within the national service field.

Will you launch your idea as a business or non-profit?

Non-profit

What will be the impact of your idea?

The 2009 Volunteering in America report found that the most underutilized resource of non-profit service organizations today is the volunteer themselves- and that volunteers should be thought of as ambassadors, of the organization and the cause, to recruit new volunteers and improve the volunteer experience. This finding was affirmed when sector leaders produced a report in late 2009 called "Re-imagining Service."

myImpact.org will re-imagine the way that volunteers serve by allowing their experience to be recorded, measured and broadcasted through their existing social networks, using technology they are already familiar with. A volunteer with a SMS-enabled cell phone will instantly be able to share their experience with their peers and, later, use that capture point to develop a more complete impact assessment of their service.

myImpact.org answers specific needs articulated by sector leaders and has three primary goals: to engage more Americans in service, to demonstrate the effectiveness of service programs and to advance service as a nationally recognized solution to societal problems.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

Chris Golden, the Executive Director and co-founder of myImpact.org, has been involved in the national service & civic engagement sectors since September 2008, when he was chosen as a national young leader to attend the ServiceNation Summit. Since then, Chris has worked to develop myImpact.org, representing the organization at conferences nationwide, and working with partner organizations and donors. In 2009, the Washington Times named Chris on a list of "young willing and able" leaders.

The myImpact.org Board of Directors, still in development, include Nick Troiano, a junior at Georgetown University and the co-founder of the organization and Ian Storrar, the Chief Operating Officer of Mobilize.org. An advisor board consisting of representatives from the youth engagement, technology, and national service fields advises the organization.

A partnership network has been established and myImpact.org works closely with other organizations in its work. We feel that our idea is uniquely positioned to fill needs that currently exist in the national and community service community.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

We anticipate that the pilot phase of the project will cost approximately $30,000- through July 2010 and we are actively pursuing additional funding sources to raise the remaining $20,000 of that total, including from corporate sponsors, foundations, sponsoring organizations and individual donors.

We anticipate that an additional $30-50,000 will be needed to scale the platform for a national launch by the end of 2010. A $25,000 grant from We Media will cover approximately half of this amount.

UNITAS: Creating Symbolic Families

“Most gangs consider themselves to be families" (Ruble, 2000). My goal is to make a documentary about UNITAS, a community of youth who have naturally formed their own symbolic and therapeutic families on the street. UNITAS: Creating Symbolic Families

What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?

“Most gangs consider themselves to be families" (Ruble, 2000). My goal is to make a documentary about UNITAS, a community of youth who have naturally formed their own symbolic and therapeutic families on the street. Illustrating symbolic families and this community is important for future gang prevention programs.

Will you launch your idea as a business or non-profit?

Non-profit

Country your work focuses on

United States

What will be the impact of your idea?

My goal is to encourage schools, after school programs, and gang prevention programs to develop a symbolic family approach to caring for at-risk youth. Children in these families are provided with peer support in and out of school. As well, they are taught conflict resolution and provided with a family structure that research states gang members are often lacking outside of the gang. In a sense, these symbolic families are their own gangs, but created with prosocial tools that can provide positive structure and support for youth. These families are created organically through play therapy, which can take place on neighborhood streets, in schools, or elsewhere. My purpose in creating the documentary is to give voice to the children in these symbolic families to share the impact and influence of the UNITAS program. I will then show the documentary to gang prevention programs and schools with the hope of replicating the UNITAS system in other places.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

I believe in the UNITAS organization. As a student in the Social Work program at the University of Washington, I planned to write my Masters Thesis on the subject of symbolic families. However, I decided a clearer vision of the organization could be made through the eyes of the UNITAS community themselves. I want to allow them to play with the camera in order to create a documentary with substantial evidence of the affects of the symbolic family. It is research, but I feel strongly that this type of research can be done more influentially through play and art rather than through qualitative interviewing. The end result, a documentary illustrating the concept of symbolic families, can be applied to gang prevention programs nationally and internationally. I have an MFA in Playwriting from Columbia University and know well how to create a story. Currently, I am working with faculty at the University of Washington to start a center that intertwines social justice and the arts. I have also worked with the non-profit East River Commedia as a resident playwright for several years. Support from these two communities, as well as from UNITAS, will provide the foundation needed.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

The budget can be under 20000. The major cost will be the buying of a camera for the children at UNITAS to use in and outside of the organization. The School of Social Work at the University of Washington has a digital department where they train their students to use cameras and microphones, and I believe we can get equipment apart from the camera from there for free. (!0,000 for camera). As well, I need to live in the Bronx for a month while we shoot the documentary. Apartment rental plus food and living expenses could be covered with 3000. Airfare would require another 500. I have experience as an editor, but would need time to edit, so would put aside 2000 for living/ rental expenses. Compensating the organization and the children with pizzas, lunches, and a final party, would cost around 1000. Last, distributing the tapes to different programs would require at least 1000 for the tapes, time, and postage.

What will be the impact of your idea?

• There will be reduced pressure on limited and scarce learning resources being invested in life skills education in the country and organisations in the country working on this issue will have access to more cost effective, quality resources.

• Young people will learn entrepreneurial skills and earn some money as they can sell these apps. This positively impacts access to livelihoods

• There will be a paradigm shift amongst migrant communities who have perceived that the only valuable assistance they can give to their families back home is either through sending foreign currency or material goods.

• The use of innovative techniques will enhance participants’ learning experiences as they enjoy multi sensory learning.

• The life stories collected will give dispersed communities the opportunity to connect and partner together to bring about behaviour change

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

Apps will be designed by a team of young developers (aged 16 -22) in Zimbabwe who are interested in learning creative problem solving and program design skills. These app developers will be work with a team of experienced mentors experienced in media production, behaviour change methodologies and creative thinking to design their products. The material for the creative process will be resourced by collecting valuable life stories from migrant communities - parents and elder relatives living in the diaspora. These life stories will then be used to create peer support applications known as ‘Life Lessons’.

As an experienced project manager, accountant and fundraiser, I will be able to use my skills to manage the development of the project and source funding. I will also develop partnerships with representative umbrella agencies that coordinate the work of NGO’s, charities and schools in the country.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

Funds will be used for the following:-
Purchase of recording equipment – for podcasting to collect life stories
Development of a website to deposit stories and description of resources that have been created
Recruitment and skills development sessions for app developers
Purchase of equipment and resources required by app developers
Marketing of project to organisations

Funds required will be approximately $25 000

What will be the impact of your idea?

The next generation being born will probably never read a newspaper. Journalism is changing rapidly as we are struggling to find a way to keep journalistic integrity in the face of free opinion based “news” online. Who will hold our politicians accountable without qualified journalists watching out for American citizens? How will democracy be ensured? Our “Seeking the Truth” documentary and SFNewsHub website explore these issues through the lens of the San Francisco Chronicle. By listening to media’s top experts, we can create viable solutions to this crisis and move forward ensuring that America has a free and unbiased media.

This is a multi-phase project involving an interactive website: SF News Hub (live since July 2009), a TV length documentary (to be completed by 2011), an educational video for high school students (to be completed by 2011), and a full-length documentary (to be completed by 2012).

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

The website has just undergone a major re-design and will re-launch in February with the help of two developers and designers, Scott Kindred and Allison Gore. The site will feature a wide variety of neighborhood news, blogs, featured videos from the documentary project, and an interactive map of where journalists are now working in our community. Much of the work is produced by undergraduate students who have yet to publish in major publications. The goal is to inspire young people to decide what news is, and write stories in a way that connect and resonate with younger generations. Through this connection, we can begin to tell stories of our past, and explain why it's important to preserve journalistic integrity.

For "Seeking the Truth," our videographer is Marlo McKenzie, who is an experienced and passionate documentary maker. Among advisory board members are: Bernice Yeung, Pueng Vongs, Shannon Bowen and faculty and staff at San Francisco State University. Not to mention the talented SF Chronicle journalists who are lending us their wisdom through video interviews such as David Perlman, Carl Nolte, Jason Lloren, John Diaz, Bill Pates and more.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

Key to this project is developing the interactive web component of SFNewsHub, which will cost $3,000 to redesign the site. To completely launch this interactive website complete with social media, it will cost $7,500.

The central piece of this website is the documentary, titled "Seeking the Truth," which seeks to inform viewers why the loss of the local newspapers negatively impact our communities. An amount of $3,000 would cover the cost of the videographer's fees to shoot, edit and produce video clips of six journalists over the course of four months. Currently, it costs about $500 for documentary maker Marlo McKenzie to produce a five-minute video. She is charging me a reduced rate because I started this project in the summer of 2009 with my own funds as a journalism professor. For $1,500, I can pay transcription costs ($800) and the rental of a second video camera ($700), which can be shot by some of our journalism students. Thus, start-up cost of the documentary is $4, 500. The total cost of producing the documentary, during the 2010-2011 year is estimated at $150,000 to $188,000. A detailed budget can be submitted upon request.

What will be the impact of your idea?

1. Renews interest in reading and producing quality journalism with far-reaching social impact.
2. Revives the health of the news media industry and helps return it to profitability.
3. Spreads the message and importance of Mentorship around the world.
4. Transforms the lives of at-risk youth and adults who are successfully paired with mentors.
5. Creates new partnerships, ventures, inventions, solutions that otherwise would not be created without the guidance, knowledge, synergy, and support derived from the mentoring process.
6. Inspires people to become mentors via the stories told which illustrate the gifts of mentorship.
7. Motivates people to spend more time reading and improves literacy and knowledge.

I was inspired to create the International Mentorship Month and www.GiftedMentors.com (an upcoming mentor-mentee matching service) by my father. He started out as a mediocre mechanical engineer. He was lucky enough to find a mentor at his company who saw his true talent in marketing and helped him get a transfer to the sales department. My dad flourished in the sales department, and instead of getting fired, he eventually became the CEO of this company.

A Board of Advisors consisting of senior members of the news, traditional and new media, public relations, advertising, and media technology industries and leaders from related sectors would be appointed to fully develop and implement the idea. I have spent considerable time developing and researching the idea of promoting mentorship via www.GiftedMentors.com and public campaigns, and have acquired a vast storehouse of resources I can utilize. The annual International Mentorship Month would serve as a springboard for www.GiftedMentors.com which would remain active in promoting mentorship and providing mentor-matching services after the Month is over and thus provide continuity until the following year's campaign. I also firmly believe in my idea and am willing to devote the rest of my life to this cause. I have the passion and determination, and legal, advisory, formation, advocacy, and entrepreneurial skills to make it happen.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

About $20,000 to $50,000. The availability of volunteers would substantially decrease startup costs.

Media Make Change is a media justice organization that works to support and empower under-served communities through snew (social + new) media technology, literacy, and advocacy. Non-profit

United States

What will be the impact of your idea?

Media Make Change is an essential service in the digital age because now, more than ever, people are using social and new media platforms and methods for political, social, and civic engagement. MMC wants to ensure that socioeconomic status, ethnic background, dis/ability, or age will not hinder a person's right-to-access and her/his ability to produce knowledge using social and new media tools. Through digital training workshops, project promotion, and annual MMC conferences, under-served and technologically under-accessed communities will have better access to broadband Internet, increased digital literacy, and exposure to professional, academic, and personal enrichment opportunities. With access, literacy, and mentorship, these individuals will be better equipped to serve the communities around them and beyond.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

Media Make Change involves an amazing network of individuals committed to helping develop its mission. The MMC team, comprised of the President, Executive Director, and Board members, are activists, community leaders, professionals, and tech experts. In addition to this incredible network of individuals, I have years of academic and professional experience in snew media. Inspired by the work I've done, the knowledge I've acquired, and the people I've met along the way, I have been able to craft a powerful vision that I intend to see through. I am more than confident in my abilities as a social activist, community organizer, and changemaker that Media Make Change will be the most successful snew media organization of this digital age generation.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

Taking into account filing fees for 501 (c)(3) status, costs of managing the website, minimal tech equipment for digital training workshops, organizing the MMC annual conference, and initial staff salaries/stipends, we expect that $25,000 will be a sufficient amount of money to begin operations.

What will be the impact of your idea?

I hope to focus Baby Boomers on looking deep within to make a difference. This will be a global campaign. For each person who steps out to help, someone else will be helped and both will benefit. It is these kinds of campaigns that help tipping points to occur and bring about long term change for our planet.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

I will connect with the lady at The Mandela "46664" office. She and I were classmates this past year on a course on Social Entrepreneurship. I manage and run the Refirement Network in South Africa and the main aim of my organisation is to help Baby Boomers understand that they need to REFIRE and not RETIRE. This campaign will help accelerate the message

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

I have no idea at this stage but I will use social media and look for sponsors once I have permission from The Mandela Foundation

SPINALpedia: See it. Believe it. Do it.

What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?

SPINALpedia is an online video sharing network that supports people with paralysis and their families in living active, healthy lives. Will you launch your idea as a business or non-profit?

Non-profit

Country your work focuses on

United States

What will be the impact of your idea?

SPINALpedia is the first venture to leverage the age of video sharing and social networking to spur pattern breaking change in the disability community. We’re upgrading to Mentoring 2.0 by erasing barriers and using media to increase the capacity of people to educate and empower each other with knowledge derived from their experience. We will unite 5.6 million Americans and millions more abroad into a global paralysis community, finally bringing people facing paralysis out of isolation and inspiring new attitudes in overcoming their perceived limitations. With videos as fundamental as how to dress yourself or as exciting as adapted skydiving, we give people the tools to redefine their daily lives and aspirations. This positive trend has the power to reverse dismal statistics like unemployment and depression and change negative stereotypes of disability. SPINALpedia is the go-to website for people with paralysis to improve their quality of life and connect to others with similar experiences. We will increase the number of people who adapt their lives and re-engage as active citizens, allowing us to spread awareness as SPINALpedia’s members become more visible members of society.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

Josh Basile and I, co-founders, represent the potential for living an active life with paralysis. Josh was paralyzed in 2004 in a beach accident, and has devoted his life to mentoring, using his life as an example of overcoming the limitations of paralysis. A communications major and spinal cord injury advocate, Josh has anchored us firmly in the paralysis community and is managing outreach and publicity. My dad was paralyzed in a car accident in 1998. I bridge the gap to society with the physical requirements to navigate the able bodied world without inciting people’s prejudices, but with the awareness of the untapped potential of the paralysis community. I have studied and taught social entrepreneurship at Harvard, and manage our business development and sustainability. Together, we have developed our prototype and are running a pilot website with over 1800 videos. Our members hail from more than 10 countries, including people paralyzed, their spouses, friends and parents, and doctors and scientists. SPINALpedia is an opportunity to demonstrate our belief that social change is not about pity or charity, but building a foundation for people to lift themselves out of adversity.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

We secured grants and donations for our pilot, but $25,000 would give us the opportunity to refine our pilot based on user experience and feedback and launch our idea to a larger market. We are focusing primarily on our innovative tag system that allows users to identify information about their situation and physical functionality to optimize search efficiency for relevant content and members. We are also aiming to enhance our networking capabilities to bolster community interaction. We will also be building management software to facilitate our revenue generating strategies including targeted advertisements, adaptive product sales, and subscriptions for related vendors. For our upcoming launch, we will need to fund our publicity campaign to generate traffic and enhance the depth and diversity of our community in order to demonstrate our functionality and value. We are able to run a relatively low-budget service with the capacity for a high return on investment, offering unprecedented benefit to the paralysis community and improving societal awareness of disabilities. With our niche market potential, we anticipate being financially self-sustaining after the first year.

What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?

We have a successful constructive bipartisan political weblog in a conflicted polity. We have partnerships with policy-tool developers. We’re going to bring those projects together building an inclusive framework designed to crowdsource good policy. It will be a unique attempt to harness the wisdom of crowds to improve democracy.

Will you launch your idea as a business or non-profit?

Non-profit

Country your work focuses on

United Kingdom

What will be the impact of your idea?

Northern Ireland's political settlement is sub-optimal. Democratic structures are a top-down 'peace process' fudge designed to avoid the murderous conflicts of the last forty years. Political parties and civil servants are unusually powerful, monopolising public debate and policy processes. Slugger O'Toole has the capacity to provide an un-financed sustainable alternative policy forum using the tools that WeMedia promotes. Our site is already very visible. Recent (about to be launched) developments will increase this. Our readers collaborate to describe problems and present options to politicians - making the hidden processes open. We want to kick-start a revolution in the concepts of consultation, leadership, lobbying and representation and promote new forms of transparency that compliment representative democracy. We want to reinstate the idea that everyone is equal in terms of public influence, and that good ideas rather than ideas promoted by vested interests or unelected elites are the cornerstone of good governance.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

The project will be managed by Mick Fealty & Paul Evans of Slugger O'Toole. It will also involve Andrew Regan of Poblish.org (a project that extracts and contextualises content from policy-related blogs, forums & blog comments) & David Price of Debategraph (a tool designed to provide visual representations of arguments & policy options).

Mick & Paul have the public profile, the personal connections, & tech project skills to make it happen - both in Northern Ireland, the UK, and thanks to WeMedia, on a more global scale. Andrew shares our vision and has the technical ability to deliver, and David understands the issues around the structuring of argumentation better than almost anyone around.

Slugger O'Toole is perfect for this idea. We believe that - more than any other political blog - it has higher visibility per-head-of-population in the polity it covers. It is non-partisan. It has established norms covering civility & quality of content & it is actually respected by local politicians & journalists.

It has the profile needed to build the necessary partnership. It also operates in a polity where all parties acknowledge the need for political innovation and gamechanging.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

Recent investment will see a redeveloped site and the commenting system (launching end-Jan 2010). We now need new technical development (usability improvements and some integration of existing tools - primarily Poblish and Debategraph and some roll-out offline activities to market and promote it. We’ll do a few Barcamp-style 'unconferences' to gather the critical mass that we need and - crucially - to get academics and students involved. There is a UK general election happening in May and we’ll ‘slipstream’ it and be ready for the new government in June. We estimate that we’ll need around 40 days of technical development at $600 (£375GBP - heavily discounted thanks to our partnerships). We’ll need at least 40 days of offline work - organising local events, project management and marketing for the idea. The offline non-tech work would be done at a rate of $400 a day (£250GBP). We need $24k.

Man-making education is a rare and non-existing idea, after Swami Vivekananda's intense teachings around the world. Men and women around the world are grabing information and degrees and do their work for their bread alone. Nobody is interested to teach the poor and the ignorant about the real knowledge to empower himself or herself not only for bread-winning, but an extra-miles going education that can protect him or her from all miseries from outside and also from his or her own inside. This strengtehing of internal man is the most important thing that is required for todays world.

Keeping a marriage strong while surviving life's trials can be a huge struggle, but learning from other's experiences can help us through these times. Ladies are not weaker sex. VC4Africa.com is supported by the team at Appfrica Labs in Kampala, Uganda. They provide the technical expertise needed to support this project. More importantly they have the drive, innovative thinking and African perspective needed to service the entrepreneurs we aim to support as an organization. Personally, I am deeply committed to this project and I am dedicated to making it a success. I have a background in International Business and a passion for Entrepreneurship. I first visited Africa in 91' and have worked in the African media space since 2003. I helped establish the innovative and successful startup Africa Interactive (AfricaNews.com) which is now a sustainable social venture. I have also recently completed a master's thesis on ICT & Entrepreneurship in Uganda that afforded me an opportunity to both appreciate the opportunities and challenges ahead. I am also working to set up an East Africa ICT & Entrepreneurship program at Hivos, the Humanist Institute for Cooperation with Developing Countries based in the Netherlands. I also have an extensive network of family, friends and colleagues willing to help me through this process and fortunately/unfortunately I don't give up

I seek matching funds. The project requires USD 50.000 to launch where I am prepared to contribute USD 25.000 of my own savings.

With this knowledge, individuals will make informed decisions about how to learn and use ICTs to best suit what they do and improve their lives. Teenagers who get career counseling workshops benefit the most. Not only will they learn which careers they are most suited for, but they will also learn to use different media to achieve different objectives.
In a country like Uganda, encouraging, guiding and embracing ICT will improve on work efficiency, information dissemination, consumption of ICT related goods and services, reduce the digital divide and therefore, national development.
The power of a mobile phone, Digital television and the Internet cannot be harnessed without the knowledge of Information Technology. Guiding one to go about it, is key.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

I am in touch with the commissioner in charge of the Department of Careers’ guidance in the Ministry of Education and Sports, careers’ guidance teachers in schools and media practitioners in media houses like Uganda Broadcasting Corporation TV, Voice of Africa FM and The Daily Monitor newspaper.
I am the one to make it happen as most people in this Country who work in the media and do Careers’ guidance and counseling have not studied Information Technology in depth. Secondly, those who have studied IT and have the experience to do it are too busy to find time to do something like this. Some are in lecture rooms while others are in Server rooms - if not surfing the internet. I want to bridge the gap.

NewsRap will provide access to the TV broadcast sector for a diverse youth population.

NewsRap will encourage Intercultural Collaboration via peer-to-peer and professional mentorship in a secure web environment.

NewsRap will inspire youth to express their opinions about issues and current events, question credibility of news sources, and seek to understand the impact on themselves and their families.

NewsRap will bring youth together with TV broadcasters within the context of local TV News shows, and enhance self-esteem of young people by their visibility as producers and performers on real TV.

Please see demo at:

http://newsrap.tv/nre2.html

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

Ely Bonder is the founder of eMage.ca, one of the first web concepts to promote youth empowerment through New Media and Broadcasting. Ely is a full-time news video editor for Canada's private sector CTV television network.

Ely pioneered youth access to broadcasters by piloting a show conceived by youth for professional TV in the early eighties, and also applied for a satellite channel for and by youth, which morphed to become one of the most successful specialty channels in Canada : YTV .

Co-piloting the NewsRap demo was accomplished with Montreal non-profit producer Les Productions Oracle, which is devoted to video production for and by youth-at-risk.

CTV News Montreal has agreed to collaborate in promoting the successful launch of NewsRap, locally, and across Canada.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

The cost of launching NewsRap will be approximately $75,000 . eMage.ca is participating in launching costs of approximately $30,000 . Sponsorship is being sought for remaining balance of project cost.

What makes your idea unique?

The village laborers are involving their most of their time in fighting with each other, communal clashes, sex addiction, drug addiction, used by Political meeting(by giving some amount and one day meals). They are practiced to avail all the benefits on FREE. Hence, they are not ready to do hard work and wanted to earn much profit on a short period. Due to this they are using unwanted chemical manures to spoil the health of humans. The practice of wasting the time by seeing the TV serials, chat with another, etc. will be reduced. They practice to get some self awareness while doing any work on group. Sharing their views on various matters will lead to healthy environment.

What impact have you had?

Every person should allot some space or at least plant in mud pots will give strenth to the family members. They can get the fresh vegetables or greens from their kitchen garden itself. Or they can use their neighbour houses for this purpose. In which, the relationship will be developed. The waste water, vegetable wastes are putting as manures for the small plants. Communual violence, idleness, etc. will be reduced. By this formation of Kitchen garden Group, the real economically backward people will benefitted. Helping, compassion, Our future generation (our children) should know the real culture and helping tendency, compassion on fellow humans and the fruit of the Spirit such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Problem

The strength is fresh vegetables. The weakness is regular quantity will not get from kitchen garden(for such option, we can use the fresh veg market). Threat will be coming from big farmers or villagers. Opportunity will be increasing as well as the health of the family members will develop. I am expecting a bright future generation if we use this Kitchen Garden Group.

Actions

The kitchen garden techniq to be adopted as hobby. Physical work may increase health and the concentration on work will give them mental health. This work to be undertaken at least everyday 30 mimutes. In which, the family will get weekly 3 to 4 days or even everyday vegetables.

Results

Self Help Group may be arranged and around 10 to 15 ladies will assemble in a house, where sufficient place is available for planting such kitchen garden veg & greens. The income and expenses may be shared among them. This unity will give them psychological strenth.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

The idel time will be reduced and the practice of FREE to be vanished from the minds of the housewives and idle gents. Regular plantation and understanding will be developed among one another without seeing any caste, creed and colour.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

I believe the most of the village labours are practiced idleness, hence they sit and drink tea shops and arrack(tasmark) shops. Hence, the crimes are increasing. They might be the prevented this and this can be tackled by their wife's and family members. Even drunkards are reducing.

What impact have you had?

Aside from providing solution to nutrition requirement and eating habit and changing preferences for food to nourish the youth, profit agenda and addressing social and economic sustainability, Soup of the Day food kiosk operation also aims to develop the students/participants to integrate in their professional lives the habit of doing business with a built in social enterprise method that will positively impact other people’s lives. This venture will train future entrepreneurs on how to handle a real business in a competitive atmosphere that has built-in social values and responsibilities.

Social Entrepreneurship venture exists to engage different sectors of society – student entrepreneurs, indigenous peoples, partner communities, business leaders and technical specialists – in providing healthy meals to consumers through sustainable agriculture by optimizing the potential and stabilizing the supply of organic products. The effect of such synergy is sustained livelihood and income potential for the stakeholders while caring for the health of individuals and for the health of mother earth.

Problem

The primary problem that Soup of the Day is addressing is the lack of access to proper nutrition. The usual available food served in the canteen has no specific guidelines or standard that a certain age bracket needs to be served. A food business that really offers a radical concept that would set a new standards for the food industry. Good nutrition need not be expensive and tasteless.

The simple Soup of the Day kiosk operation is a solution to various social problems such as poverty, peace and order, food security, climate change adaptation, protection of the environment, preservation of culture and tradition. The concept help in providing an approach to address sustainability in larger and multi-sectoral scope approach.

Actions

Success in this business enterprise will be influenced by several factors:

Partnership with Xavier University - the Center for Learning in Northern Mindanao

Product excellent quality, taste, presentation and nutritional value - All food and beverages being served will pass through nutritional value analysis. No monosodium glutamate (MSG) or any other synthetic chemical will be used for preparing the food or beverages. Organic products will be used.

Promotion will be done even if potential clients of the kiosks are already confined and centered in these campuses and are considered captured consumers.Creative promotion and information campaign will be conducted to inform students that whenever they patronize the kiosk, it helps the local economy in Mindanao as it creates sustainable livelihood without having to give dole outs.

Looping Business Support Group to address each area of the operation.

Results

The expected results would be a success story. Soup of the Day will be known everywhere, whenever there is a need for soup, wherever there is a need to help and empower people to be free economically as it address underlying social problems originating from poverty. An initiative that is educational and economical that can be institutionalized, replicated and applied in any community seeking economic freedom. Communities and organization who are seeking format or template can apply the quadrant of success which is the framework for the Soup of the Day initiative.

Soup of the Day will be known and would be a working example that when genuine intention to help is activated, insights and concept will fall into places having all factors in for its success. It is not an overnight evolution but a process that one gets through when you have the right intention and right concept that destined to make a difference.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

The Soup of the Day Food Kiosk operation is supported by group of experts in each field of operation, offers healthy products, presentation and taste is among the best, serves as venue addressing social and economic problems, (eg. poverty, nutrition, unemployment, climate change, food safety and security, etc) and high volume profitability serving the largest community of students in CDO.

Mainstream operation can be franchised and has a positive appeal of initiatives to funding institutions which, in effect, can benefit more communities and sustainability of the initiative.

An increasing demand for this kind of product is an indicator for the future success of the project.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

The defined market population, small margin per unit due to student budget is the main concern to address. Profitability would depend on volume and the demand for bigger manpower are the main constraint to success. Measures has been identified to minimize these risks. However, operating simultaneously in other areas will help lower the fixed cost of the operation.

How many people will your project serve annually?

The partnership is very critical to the success of Soup of the Day. The close loop created is considered a major factor. Working with Xavier University, an established and reputable Institution gives credibility to Soup of the Day. It provides the opening to help and create opportunity for the Indigenous Peoples need for economic empowerment. Soup of the Day moved and put its initiatives in action through personal funding. For a multi-sectoral approach that it has mobilized, had the partnership came in late, the effort and resources involve would have gone into waste. The partnership happened just in time, a two way opportunity and complimentary to each parties’ initiatives.

The partnership with Xavier University bridge the way for Soup of the Day to make the difference, delivering and realizing its vision.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

It all started with my fondness for soup which originated in our family. When we have soup, eating became festive, lively and dignified. Whenever I am hungry I look for soup and that fills me up. Whenever I feel down I got uplifted by simply thinking I would be having a soup. How about transforming the fondness into a business the created solution to the suffering human dignity due to poverty?. Maybe that can spell the difference and so it does.

I sound off the idea but it seems not attracting interests, though friends replied they too are soup lovers. They can’t see logic in the vision knowing i would be spending so much of my time in the development of the concept given my successful career in the business consultancy world. But the challenge is to put the idea in action so that it can be tried and tested, so I focus. Without hesitation I conceptualized, conducted market research, developed my concoction and I’m operating Soup of the Day Food kiosk two months after the idea sink in. I open outlets month after another for the first quarter of the operation. I was able to establish the operating system, create the image and brand the product. Franchise inquiries are flooding my emails including foreign interest because of the website. At a very infant stage, I know I have the right concept and the challenge is how to make it fly. My expertise in business development made the initiative easier to accomplish. It was a process I went through concurrent with my learning for fields unknown to me. Awakening on good nutrition, organic farming, herbs power among others. Understanding sustainability, climate change and other NGO words are part of the metamorphosis of the concept and me. It attracts people who give free and unsolicited sound advice. A concept I can’t no longer own because it is a composition of the goodness of people who unselfishly give their contribution to make the Soup of the Day concept a success.

And by the way, I was a soup teenie. When i was in elementary and high school, I manage the school canteen, cooking and selling soup whenever we have home economics subject, so it's really not a new thing to me after all. Now, I am the Soup Lady to many people whose lives we have touched and about to touch.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

At a very young age, I have witnessed my father’s ways of being able to help a number of people despite the given financial limitations. We live a simple life with integrity. My learning from him is that we can help in any way we can and lack of money should not prevent people from doing so.

I would say that one of my attributes is that character of my father, being helpful. One description I heard from a colleague is that I have a pregnant mind. “always pregnant with new ideas” ideas that works and beneficial to the majority, they find me as a person with sound judgment. One HR practitioner client describe my innate attribute to empower others is my tool , bringing out the best in them help people deliver their tasks. An investment consultant brand me a Social Entrepreneur when he heard of the Soup of the Day concept. That new word made me research for its meaning and it scared me being seen as one. It did not occur to me that, great expectation is what I have created out of the simple soup kiosk operation.

Business Partners, clients, friends and networks find me sincere, reliable effective and inspirational. I hope I could live up with the perceived attributes.

I belong to the top of my class and can get along well with people. I have finished Accountancy and took a course on Social Entrepreneurship in Ateneo de Manila and a seminar in AIM’s Bridging Leadership for more understanding of the field I stepped in. My life has changed from then on but I embraced it with enthusiasm and passion knowing this maybe is my calling. Though challenges and risks are more. It makes my life more meaningful knowing I may leave an inspiring and sustainable legacy in this lifetime. Possibilities are limited and all it takes is to dream and give life to that dream to deliver the positive changes and give life to that changemaker in me.

Alongwith the nutrition flour powder, we must council the ladies for betterment of their mind. The ladies are very fond of goose berry, which is very well available in all parts of India. Hence, by asking them to eat the goose berry and then we have to advice them to eat for their baby. During milk feeding, they should avoid fat foods, hot drinks, soft drinks like coca-cola, pepsi, etc., cigarettes, and other alcoholic items.

Problem

The midday meal scheme(with egg) is started giving on in the schools upto 8th standard in Tamilnadu, India. Everyday one green and fresh vegetable are given along with rice. It is better to organize through Government with the help of NGOs to monitor the schemes. "If world leaders are serious about reaching the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health, then strategies and funding for reducing death and disability related to preterm birth must receive priority," Dr. Howse adds.

Actions

The midday meal scheme(with egg) is started by the late Chief Minister Mr.Kamaraj during 1960’s and then followed by the late CM Mr.MGR during 1980’s and it is still going on in the schools upto 8th standard in Tamilnadu, India.
