read more↓↑ hide↑ hideExplain what the "innovation" is about, e.g., is it the idea and/or the model you use to accomplish the idea, or your understanding of the target population, etc.?
First of all, this project was born from a great opportunity: an extended loan by Boehringer Ingelheim of a plot of land.
We believe in the value of cooperation and synergies that can be realized from the encounter between profit and non-profit, aims to promote the production of quality food, offering more opportunities for health and supporting, through the Cooperative Domdoca type "B" the most disadvantaged social groups.
The project idea is also born from the collaboration of the Cooperative Domdoca with the project "Feeding Milan, energies for Change" Slow Food Italy.
Slow Food is a global organization founded in 1989 to counter the rise of fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat.
The innovation of this project is about a double crossing purpose: from one side the involvment of disadvantaged people in creating "health", preventing the disease starting from food: good for citizens and good for environment.
From an other side engage the population in creating a system of services to redefine the features of metropolitan area of South Milan as a pilot laboratory of sustainable, ethic and innovative food producing.
In summary, the project will create new opportunities for citizens of direct exchange with the South Milan Agricultural Park and its resources, in order to realize a repeatable model of excellence.
Describe how your innovation model is distinct from any other organization in your field?
A key aspect of the development of the project is the inclusion and participation of the population in the entire production process, to self pick-up in the field of products that people can recognize as healthy and sustainable.
The project would also achieve its social goals through productive activities, mainly in the production and processing of agricultural products, by integrating work of socially disadvantaged people, in not less than 30% of workers.
What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?
Features such as mutuality, solidarity, democracy, the commitment, the balance of responsibilities and roles, community spirit, the link with the territory, a balanced relationship with the state and public institutions.
The project would demonstrate how the inclusion and recovery work in social cooperative not only increase the social and psychological well-being of thousands of individuals and families but, far from being a cost to the community, provide significant savings of public resources already in short period.
How do you make sure you constantly innovate in light of (potential) external challenges, or your growth plan?
The innovation potential of the agricultural production system based on participation is in principle infinite, then the large size of the area allocated to the project, allows to expand the plantation, producing vegetables and fruits meeting the direct needs and demands of the population: this opportunity preserve all the project features of originality and participation.

Please describe your solution in more detail
The project would achieve its social goals through productive activities, mainly in the production and processing of agricultural products, by integrating work of socially disadvantaged people, in not less than 30% of workers.
What are your vision and overall objectives?
We believe that the involvement of the territory, in the form of associations, buying groups and simple families and citizens will be able to create a virtuous circle that will generate income.
Above all, the key to the success of the project will be the concept of bringing the country to the city, to meet the deep need for citizens to find a way of life more sustainable.
What is your value proposition?
Price and "short chain" next to authenticity and freshness are the hallmarks of our products.
The main purpose we propose through the use of a methodology to short chain is to contain and reduce the costs of products, limit and restrict the production steps for also lead to direct contact between the producer and the consumer.
Who is your customer(s)?
People, citizens and families of the area, who want to share an idea of participation and sustainability.
Associations and cooperatives, buying groups linked (GAS).
Small distribution centers within the city.
What approaches to you use to reach your customers?
The "buzz" in the area and the non-traditional communication, besides the use of social networks and the engagement of GAS and other networks of associations.
What are your primary activities?
The main activity will consist of cultivation of vegetables and organic fruit, which be sold with a new way called "self picking", directly in field.
Who are your peers and competitors? What problems could these players pose to your success or growth?
At the moment there are no other territories that are undergoing similar projects. Our model is an absolute innovation.
What other challenges - individual, organizational, or environmental – are you currently facing or might hinder future success of your business, and how do you plan to overcome those?
Our main problem, actually, is organizational, that is find enough people with the right skills who can work in the field.
Briefly describe your growth strategy going forward
Our growth strategy is to gradually consolidate a network of small-scale distribution and direct sale of products, so as to reach every season to expand the area of land cultivated and also increase the variety of vegetables according to the request.

New customer group(s).
What makes your business "ready" for growth?
The growth of the business is ensured from being able to offer a response to the profound needs of the citizens to find sustainable living spaces and quality, starting of course from food.
What are your key growth objectives?
The main objective of growth and consolidation of the project is to be able to economically self-sustaining in a couple of years, but without neglecting the commitment to ensuring employment opportunities and inclusion for people in need.
What is your timeframe for growth, in the short and mid-term? What are the growth milestones and key activities going forward?

The project "Children's Friends" is aimed at the children because they are preferential in need of support from the side of adults. Especially when some of them is in the hospital for a long time due to some disease. For many of them it is hard to experience the time spent in the walls of a hospital so we’ll try to do everything we can for young patients to make them feel much more better in the conditions of the hospital setting. So, first of all, the project "Children's Friends" dedicated to children from hospitals.

Start-Up (a pilot that has just begun operating)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
When people experience loss, the customary methods of bereavement are to participate in a "grief group" or see a therapist. In the project proposed here - Flower Power: Growing Hope in a Season of Change - the focus is upon empathic caregiving (growing and donating flowers to hospice patients and their families) during which therapeutic horticulture (adults) and therapeutic art (children and youth) are applied in a broad systems engaging approach to transitioning throught the loss.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Flower Power:
(1) Grows flowers for donation to hospice patients and their families
(2) Provides the venue for those who have experienced a loss to grow through and beyond the loss
(3) Builds supportive, restorative relationships among diverse community members
(4) Establishes a creative, multidisciplinary, systems-engaging, sustainable model for bereavement
(5) Educates the community in the benefits of hospice
(6) Fosters community good will
(7) Engages all ages from children to adults
(8) Recruits volunteers
(9) Develops a unique and replicable model of therapeutic horticulture
10) Creates a social enterprise in which portions of Flower Power will be offered on a fee for service basis to other hospices; and, some flowers will be marketed in local gift shops.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
Heartland Hopsice is a division of HCR-Manor care has, until now, used traditional grief workshops with its beravement patients. It also has not partnered in provision of these services. This is the standard approach to bereavement used by the majority of bereavement providers. Attendance and participation in these workshops has been very low. However, the October 2012 pilot project (called "Getting Potted") of Flower Power yielded an overwhelming interest and participation.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
From growing flowers to producing colorful, hope-filled flowerpots and processing losses, Flower Power provides spaces, places, activities, methods and volunteer opportunities that engage and benefit communities as a whole.
Adults will grow flowers in donated greenhouse space. While growing these flowers, a bereavement facilitator/Master Gardener will facilitate both the growing process and the Appreciative Inquiry (therapeutic) conversations. The tactile, cognitive, emotive (multi-sensory), relational, and empathic engagement with people and flowers will yield individual and community benefits.
Children and youth will create art work to be incorporated into the flower pots used by the adults in growing and potting the flowers. Therapeutic art work is created in partnership with a nonprofit arts organization and an elementary school. The art work will be created under the guidance of art specialists and bereavement facilitators.
In each of these venues, a mixture of "bereaved" and "not bereaved" will work side by side in an empathetic investment and social bonding project.
When flowers are ready to donate, adult volunteers will deliver the flowers and pots to bereaved familiy members.
Flower Power becomes sustainable as it markets the processes and venues to other bereavement providers in the form of fee for service offerings. Also, a percentage of the flowers will be sold in gift shops to defray some project costs.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
Extensive internet research has been conducted; yielding that there are no projects like Flower Power in terms of multiple systems engagement, collaborating partners, multiple therapeutic approaches, mult-generational participation, motivation to altruistic, empathic helping, social enterprise development, and Asset Based Community Development.
This writer applied similar processes and strategies to develop a very successful regional food security project: Shalom Farms.
Importantly, this writer firmly believes collaboration - not competition - will yield the greatest common good.

The architect (David Cooper) applies this model as a national catalyst, facilitator, trainer, and coach of Systems Thinking approaches that use Asset Based Community Development. Mr. Cooper has worked with communities in Richmond, VA; Los Angeles, CA; Grand Rapids, MI; Newburgh, NY; and LaGrange, GA with community leaders (residents) to develop locally led and resourced projects that contribute to holistic community wellbeing.
For Flower Power, Mr. Cooper simply saw that the traditional model of bereavement was not working; therefore, he applied entrepreneurial leadership within the traditional organizational structure to achieve intrapreneurial success.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Ten collaborating partner organizations and several bereaved family members formed the Guiding Group and collectively guide and resource Flower Power.
A delightful and productive pilot project (Getting Potted) was held in October 2012. The pilot was a success and resulted in an article in the City of Richmond Cooperative Extension newsletter.
Since Flower Power is not a formal business entity, the Bon Secours Foundation has agreed to serve as a fiscal agent until such time as Flower Power formally incorporates or establishes some other operating entity.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
Year one:
(1) Grow flowers for donation = 300 pots delivered- measured by delivery receipts
(2) Develop loss groups- 36 sessions- measured by participant rosters
(3) Build relationships among diverse community members: 216 adult & 144 children/youth totaling 360 volunteers. Measured by pre and post evaluation forms.
(4) Establish unique bereavement model. Measured by a completed year 1 plan.
(5) Educate participants in the benefits of hospice. Measured by participant pre and post evaluation forms.
(6) Foster community good will. Measured by participant evaluation forms.
(7) Multigenerational participation. Measured by participant evaluation forms and group session rosters.
(8) Market fee-for-service bereavement to hospices, hospitals, and orgs.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
Barriers may include (1) insufficent start-up funding, (2) Heartland Hospice continuing to allot sufficient time for David Cooper to coach the project toward fruition, and (3) insufficent interest by organizations as a fee for service project.
Strategies to overcome barriers: (1) applying for internal and external grants; (2) negotiating with Heartland Hospice to envision the project as unique, viable and replicable; (3) negotiate sales outlets to brand and market Flower Power potted plants.

Emapthic altrusim (giving time and flowers), Bereavement processing (therapeutic horticulture and therapeutic art), social bonding and bridging, income to support the project, and hope amidst life's transitions.
How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
A small seed grant ($500.00) has been awarded by the Heartland Memorial Fund, employee time contributed by representatives from 10 organizations, David Cooper's specialized experience and training in forming Community Collaboratives across the US, donated website creation and hosting by Shalom Makers, and a recent blog article published by the ASHOKA Start Empathy Now project.
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
Market and sell a percentage of the products (flowers in decorated flower pots) through local outlets. One partnering organization, Bon Secours Hospitals, is considering placing some of the flowers in their hospital gift shops.
Develop fee-for-service offerings and market to local hospices, palliative care organizations, schools, and hospitals. Hospices are required by Conditions of Participation to provide bereavement group services to all bereaved. Since Flower Power offers a unique blend of approaches, and will meet the requirements of Hospice Conditions of Participation, Flower Power can fulfill requirements and provide services in collaborative, cost-saving ways.
Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.

What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund has provided a small seed grant ($500.00) to assist with start up.

The Federal Reserve claims the average lifespan of a new dollar bill is 4.8 years = 1,752 days. There is unfortunately, no data available on how frequently an individual bill changes hands in its usable lifetime. Once a day sounds about right to me, but wouldn’t you agree that with a single wallet full of Dandelion Dollars, you could realistically expect to reach 10,000 people in the lifespan of those bills?
According to government statistics, out of 10,000 adult Americans:
1,810 suffer from an anxiety disorder
1,500 are living in poverty
930 needed treatment for a drug or alcohol abuse problem in the last year
670 suffer from a major depressive disorder
400 will divorce in the next year
38 will commit a violent crime in the next year
11 will attempt suicide in the next year
1 will die from suicide in the next year
If you could reach out to these 5,360 struggling people with a message of LOVE, JOY, HOPE don’t you think that it would make a real difference to one, or two, or five, or 100 of them to receive it at just the right time when they desperately needed a sign that things can get better. That there are forces out there in the universe pulling for them?. What if my math is wrong? What if it wouldn’t reach 5,360 people like this? What if it only reached 536? Or 53? Or 5? Wouldn’t that still be reason enough to reach out to them? But what if one Dandelion Dollar recipient picked up a dollar and a pen and made a Dandelion Dollar of their own? What if 5 did? What if 53 did? What if 536 did? What if 5,360 did? What if everyone did? :-)

Idea (you're poised to launch)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
Familiar with America’s Got Talent and Britain’s Got Talent? Okay, it doesn’t matter whether your answer is “Yes” or “No”, the point is that our company got talent, you are the talent and everybody is talented in their own ways.
However, think about it, you will find that your talent but doesn’t not benefit you or the society the most. Most of the time, the company have the talents wasted, and you yourself also got your talents idled.
How to make most of the cooperate talents and your personal talent to encourage sharing and community learning contribution? Here is this idea, SnL, an open classroom for you and by you.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
SnL is an open classroom based on Accenture’s evasive learning resources and talent pool. Everybody in the local community interested can register as a learner or a sharer. Will be an add-up to Accenture’s internal training programs and the first step of open Accenture’s knowledge resources to the community.
Where, when & what are the classes?
Can be Accenture’s meeting rooms or places sponsored by local government. Class can be an internal training program that is appropriate to open to the community or a brand new one submitted by our course conductor or YOU. Classes will happen during after-work hours and weekend.
• How the courses come into being?
Ideally there should be a webpage for this open classroom, but at the very beginning it can be an email address of the responsible person. You can submit course idea to it for review. Or the contact group can come out with some topics, post it online, anyone interested and capable to conduct it can take the role.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
Nearly all the top international companies have their own excellent learning and training system, this is especially true when it comes to Accenture. Accenture’s social learning mission is to enable our people to learn from each other and bring the best of Accenture to our clients. For Accenture, building a collaborative and sharing culture is still a journey. Yes, there is no shortcut but there is this innovative way out. Open classroom is first of its kind.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
Since it is still an idea to be implemented, there is no real example to cite for you. But I can tell you that courses like Business English or Basic Japanese which are now open to internal employee and conducted by vendors in Accenture China, can definitely have our internal talents to take the conductor role. Just give you some detailed idea of why both Accenture and its people would like to do it.
• Why Accenture employee want to be part of it
First of all, “We learn by teach and teach by learn.”An open classroom is where we can become a sharer and share what we learned with not only our colleagues but the entire community. Personally we take a step further when we become the sharer because we are the owner of the knowledge if we can share it.
Second, as innovative employees, we are part of the company and the community, we want to contribute even just in the smallest ways. We also want to have a different weekend or after-working hours by going out to the world and do something meaningful.
• Why Accenture want to do this?
First of all, it is a good fit for its “building a collaborative and sharing culture” mission.
Second, with its online resources and its talented employees, Accenture is capable of starting this first of its kind initiative.
Third, it can help Accenture tap deep into its talents pool, and provide its employee a platform to share and grow.
Fourth, it can also help Accenture save budget by not paying venders to do an Accenture employee abled course. Actually, most of the times, an Accenture employee can do it even better.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
We are not doing something to compete with someone, but to contribute and be a better social enterprise. It is an open class where people and share, learn from each other, light other’s life even just a little bit .
There might be open classes by different non-for-profit community. Each of them got their own advantages and disadvantages. Accenture’s open class has Accenture’s massive online learning recourses as its knowledge base which can contribute to its biggest advantages. To open the resources by having its employees to share with the community is a win-win solution.

What makes you an intrapreneur? What are the skills, capabilities, and personality traits that make you an intrapreneur?
We have been displaying intrapreneurial behaviour since the beginning of our studying and working life by initiating projects outside of the curriculum. We think acquired skill and learnt knowledge should be put into practice, preferably towards solving wicked problems.
We founded our partnership by realising that the potential of this university and NGOs we work with is not utilised. And we believe that people in communities can have a strong societal impact themselves. So we combined our professional expertise with our field experience of working with NGOs as well as our academic backgrounds to start this initiative within a broader framework that we are hoping to reshape.

Idea (you're poised to launch)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
We are trying to solve the gap that exists between innovative thinkers and investors. The digital revolution has reached the Arab world but has not had a chance to be truly established as a pool of social venture opportunities. We recognise the potential and want to build a network facilitates the creation of new sustainable businesses in a modern, young and growing society.
As of now there is no such network or digital platform that brings people in the Arab world together so they can co-create their future. This we aim to change through intercultural collaboration and community innovation in a local hackerspace.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Through an exchange of young Finnish and Lebanese students, entrepreneurs, designers and activists we are aiming to facilitate community innovation around the emerging hackerspaces in Beirut, Lebanon. The idea is to observe, think, create and make for societal change. The final deliverable will be based around a knowledge sharing digital platform in the Arab context, that was co-created and co-designed by the European and Arab participants. This platform will be used to promote emerging social ventures in the region. Anybody with a vision for the development of their society will get the chance to connect with investors and potential partners, pitch ideas, access resources and brainstorm around digital tools for societal impact.
The project will include 2 parts:
1) A student exchange between Finland and Lebanon.
2) A business incubator that will be created and maintained by local communities and a growing network of social entrepreneurs.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
We are proposing a new way of doing development work. Instead of bringing in foreign experts to finance and control the way a society is shaped we would like to enable citizens with new ideas that first of all benefit smaller communities by giving them access to a network of fellow active citizens and small-scale investors so that ideas can be taken off the ground sensibly in a sustainable manner. No such network currently exists in the Arab world but is certainly wished for.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
Our initiative works with the first ever hackerspace in Beirut. Finnish students will work together with the existing community and come up with product service systems that can be developed in social business models to be pitched to investors. This could for example be a new tool to regulate energy consumption in the household, one of the major urban challenges that is surrounded by a lot of exploiting activities. We will collaborate with local entrepreneurs and other activists to form a strong proposal and receive investments. Around the first proposals that emerge from the student exchange we will base a network for future social venture incubation. This platform will be developed with the digital community and Arab entrepreneurs so that it is relevant for the Arab markets and takes into consideration the various cultural contexts. It will allow the shaping of training and workshop groups for self-teaching, impact investments through various partners, collaboration on design pitches, testing sessions organised at local labs or with local and remote volunteers etc.
In the local Beirut entrepreneurial hub we will kickstart a regular event that links the digital spaces with the existing Entrepreneurs' Brunch so that contemporary social ventures gain the visibility they deserve.
The first proposals will be exhibited both in Beirut and Helsinki and serve as marketing material for the future activities on the platform.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
So far there is no competitor that directly links the open source maker culture to entrepreneurial activities on the ground.
However one partner is GEMSI, an initiative that helps kickstart the founding of those hackerspaces themselves in different Arab countries. Another competitor, who could easily be a peer, is the MIT Pan Arab Forum that created a social entrepreneurship workshop at the beforementioned hub, although with no focus on the media used. Western platforms like Kickstarter and Instructables are known and used but they do not address those specific markets.
Besides Lamba Labs, the local partner, another peer is the MENA Design Research Center that focuses on design research for social impact and works a lot with communities on sustainable solutions for societal issues.

When I was first working with the MENA Design Research Center in Lebanon, I quickly realised the potential that fast networking has in the country. People act on passion and common understanding of society's needs, something that is specific to the region and its people thanks to a history that often left them behind in decision-making processes.
The second time I worked in Beirut with the hackerspace I saw the common interest and immediate excitement about access to the digital tools but at the same the unawareness of tangible opportunities that these offer.
By networking with many other activists and entrepreneurs as well as participating in many initiatives my belief in the country's potential has been strengthened. The eagerness of partners to join us keeps us motivated to make this happen in the near future as we are building a sustainable model for realisation.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
As our solution is still in the pitching stage it has not made a tangible impact. However it brought on board many people that are now devoting time to realising this idea, which certainly is an impact in terms of the mindset of people. We managed to bring the Arab societies into academic discussions at Aalto, which is something that has not happened before. Faculty and students from all levels are now eager to learn more and participate. We are also creating stronger networks between both European and Lebanese stakeholders.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
In one year the student exchange will take place that will lead to the creation of the platform, an exhibition of the proposals as well as an evaluation phase.
The incubation methodology will have been developed and will then be tested and optimised with various trials so that in three years time the business model can have reached sustainability and will be maintained locally. We are looking at slowly growing ventures to ensure strong capacity building and avoid fast collapse. While we will provide tutoring we will mainly focus on adapting the model for other markets such as Iraq, Iran and Egypt, where we also have partners.
If approved by the partner universities, the student exchange will become mutual and continue yearly, thus supporting the incubation space in Lebanon.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
There still is the fright that many investors share when it comes to investing in the Arab markets. At the same time we have to fight common definitions of development work as we are proposing an innovative approach. We also know that cogs are moving slowly in academia so that this is struggle when trying to establish a new course. It also does not help that we are still young graduates with limited entrepreneurial expertise.
However we have a strong pitch and many experienced partners from various fields that support every application.
We have professional expertise and a good cultural understanding so that we can communicate the importance of this project and the relevance of the location.
We already received a small travel grant for networking in Lebanon in February, which helps.
read more↓↑ hide↑ hideWhat is the benefit or value you're creating for your business?
The benefits can be measured in various ways.
One will be the successful emergence of new, partly profitable business in Lebanon that utilise digital means. Within a few years first studies will confirm the impact those social ventures create on society.
The other value is for the academia as it opens up a new educational market for Finland and potentially other European partners.
How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
We are making use of Aalto's support for new courses and projects that are run with at least two different departments. Through that we are able to build an academic support system. At the same time we are shifting people's focuses onto this project so that they do not have to spend much additional time but rather adjust the time they invest into initiatives anyways. This is support by the research opportunities the project provides. At the same time we are making use of existing networks on all scales such as the Cumulus for the overall university, the research labs for smaller focuses, the local and remote centers as well as EU foundations that support our concept stage with small travel grants.
We are using our access to various services within Aalto to support this initiative.
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
In the long term there will be various ways of funding this initiative.
While the Lebanese partner institutions will provide a working space, materials and tutoring as well as exhibition support, the Finnish institution, Aalto University, will provide academic support such as official accreditation, travel grants, provision of working rooms and seminar building.
The funding for the implementation of the business proposals after the first project phase will be taken on by local investors in Beirut, Lebanon. Thanks to this plan, the funding required is rather minimal as it is required in increments rather than a lump sum and much of the funding is provided through the sponsoring of facilities, materials and human resources.
Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.
Within Aalto we have partnerships with several departments and research groups such as the NODUS sustainable design research group, the ePedagogy department, the Media Lab, the Aalto Global Impact development initiative, the Executive Education and the Creative Sustainability programme.
Outside of Aalto we have partnerships with the MENA Design Research Center, the Lamba Labs hackerspace, the Lebanese American University and the GEMSI initiative.
What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
So far we have received mainly academic and structural support from within Aalto. So far there have not been many push-backs as we are just starting the initiative. We have just applied for course funding, which we will be informed of at the end of this month.
There has only been one push-back, which is timing as already many projects and courses have been confirmed for the coming 18 months, which leaves us behind a little. On the other hand we have promising partnerships.

My interest in social finance started in 2010 when I represented JPMorgan in a similar competition by evaluating proposals. During my time in London Business School, I assisted a Ghanaian micro-finance organization with capital-raising and my interest turned into academic work with my graduation thesis about the undercapitalisation of UK social enterprises by providing a valuation methodology, which received the highest grade. Finally I co-headed a research project, supported by Big Society Network (BSN) into UK Social Finance industry by interviewing all key players which provided valuable insights and a motivation for this competition.

I believe in the importance of specialisation and being the expert of something but also in expanding one's horizon with new knowledge. I am a learner with a pattern of going into emerging areas. I got interested in social finance for the first time four years ago when it was still a new concept. My motivation to understand new things has been a constant driver for me to challenge the status quo on how to apply new trends or discoveries to my environment. I am a good networker and a good listener, which allows me to understand the corporate culture, spot opportunities to apply these trends within the organization by addressing the right people with the right business strategy to gain their support. I have high energy levels and when I am engaged, I can motivate people and lead.

Idea (you're poised to launch)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
UKSocial Finance market was £190mm in 2011 despite funds of £600mm being available from the government alone without counting private investments. During my market research “lack of investable businesses” and “insufficient capital” were the most pronounced key industry inhibitors identified by investors and entrepreneurs respectively. These are actually interconnected. In reality capital is available to profit-making, commercially sustainable businesses with management teams able to speak the language of “investors". Many entrepreneurs with great ideas and relevant experience are not “investment ready” because they don’t understand how the investment process works or types of funding instruments available and can’t pitch ideas effectively. They need support to become investment ready.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Entrepreneurs need to know how to structure their business around a profitable idea but also how to present and structure their ask which requires an understanding of financing options available as well as an awareness of what the investors want to see. Finance, among other skills, can be gained through training. There are many support organizations and incubators in the UK such as BSN, UnLtd, ClearlySo. SCB offers its employees three paid leave to volunteer. We have skilled and knowledgeable people looking to contribute to their society and community. In cooperation with a major and reputable support organization, a training program targeting these necessary skills (basic finance, investment process, presentation, pitching etc) can be created and delivered by SCB volunteers. Same program can also be extended to include a mentorship scheme for the volunteers to continue to work with the entrepreuneurs following the training untill succesful fund raising.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
SCB runs many volunteering programs and there are also many external ones such as Bankers Without Borders initiative. Albeit crutial, these focus in one community or social area. By training future social entrepreuneurs, SCB will contribute to the creation of social innovation and sustainability to a large scale. For the industry, there are many support organizations with very skilled employees. This project will supply technical, active practitioners it needs in a fast way.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
Following a selection process, SCB agrees on co-operation for training sessions with X, one of the UK’s major support organizations which is known to and trusted by most social investors. Benefiting from X’s experience from its work with social entrepreneurs and screening hundreds of proposals every year, SCB creates a training agenda for the core skills and technical knowledge the entrepreneurs need for access to capital. Then SCB posts volunteering positions in the Bank’s intranet. X also nominates a group of promising entrepreneurs from their database to attend SCB training. SCB creates a pool of volunteers to deliver training and participate in mentorship schemes. A from Principle Investing for investment process and cycle, B from Corporate Finance and C from Debt Capital Markets jointly for basics of investment instruments, D from Business Strategy for writing a business plan and presentation skills are selected to conduct the respective trainings. Following the training, SCB mentorship volunteers continue to work with entrepreneurs until they are “investment ready”. Kathy develops an application for smart phones to help young patients to take their medicines on time. She receives a small grant to start the business. She is now in growth stage and needs capital.X refers her to SCB's training and after gaining an understanding of financial options available, she decides to raise equity from a venture capitalist with industry knowledge and contacts who can also mentor her.Ali from SCB helps her to perfect her business plan and practice her presentation ahead of her pitch
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
There is a growing acceptance that social entrepreneurs(SE) and their ventures can bring creative solutions and scale to products and services coupled with sustainable business models to deliver positive social impact. The recent launch of Big Society Capital and the establishment of social impact bonds changed the UK landscape by increasing the number of funds investing in SEs as well as support organizations and programs acting as conduits between investors and SEs to make them investment ready (i.e: Deloitte’s Pioneers, Skoll/Oxford’s Entrepreneurship Center, UnLtd, ClearlySo) My idea does not compete with any existing players, but complements their mission by providing skilled workforce/volunteers with needed technical knowledge and understanding of financial processes.

While evaluating competition proposals for the competition on behalf of JPMorgan and working with the micro-finance institution I realized how much SEs struggled with basic finance process and knowledge that I took for granted as a finance professional. During my market research, while all SE investors were talking about a shortage/ lack of professional proposals, I met lots of SEs who had good ideas but who didn’t know what to ask for and how. My Aha moment came during an interview when a founding member of a support organization said:” it’s a pity, there are so many people interested in social finance but few with finance background/career. People don’t want to give up to big pay checks” She was an ex-investment banker and her organization was also suffering from the same problem despite the great talent she had in the company. Intrapreneurship: share the knowledge while staying at current job and pay, get familiar with the industry and contribute to its development.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
My proposal is at the idea stage. The focus of my UK Social Finance research was to identify dysfunctional areas of the market via interviews with investors, support organizations and SEs and provide solutions to help the industry to reach its full potential. I had the opportunity to interview most major players in the UK Social Finance at senior level leveraging the network provided by London Business School and Big Society Network. I have run my idea by a few support organization as well as investors and received positive feedback in terms of their potential cooperation. When SCB’s volunteering team recently posted mentoring opportunities for a UK social entrepreneur which was oversubscribed, it encouraged me to continue with this project. I had the idea but I was not very sure how to proceed with it. I am hoping that this competition will provide the necessary platform internally and externally to bring it to life.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
The project is a first step of a wider vision. After creating awareness and success stories, capitalizing on the momentum, next step would be to create a social finance group like some of our competitors like Deutsche Bank, UBS, JPMorgan etc making SCB one of the pioneers of a nascent industry. tThe group can continue with the training, contribute to provide research into the industry and can take to other home markets of the Bank in Asia and Africa, leveraging its understanding of emerging markets thanks to its long-standing operating history and local presence. After getting familiar and confortable with the industry, perhaps the social finance group could participate in the market as a SE investor combining the existing skill and know-how of its Principle Investment group.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
Social Finance will reach its potential of creating sustainable social innovation only if it becomes an asset class attracting institutional investors. At the moment the industry lacks a poster child. While this type of projects can help to get institutional investors like SCB familiar, they unfortunately face the same problem.Social finance is a new concept also to SCB.Therefore, internally a big effort to create awareness about social finance through marketing is needed as well as getting the crucial senior management sponsorship. After success stories, SCB will be familiar with the industry and the internal support will be wider. This will also create a track record promoting the participation of other institutions making it an asset class thus self sustaining without any volunteers.

SCB is a British bank. This project creates an opportunity to give back to its home country and be one of the leaders of social innovation and sustainable development in the UK. It is scalable; the project therefore gives scope for SCB to participate in the growth of social finance in its foot print in Asia, Africa and Middle East. The bank has the required infrastructure: commitment, volunteering schemes, technical knowledge and local presence. And if it chooses to, a platform the Principle Investment team to extend its portfolio to SEs.
How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
One of the reasons why I chose SCB as my employer is the commitment of the company to sustainable finance and the adoption of giving back to communities as a core value. In the near future, no funding is required as social capital is what the project needs. SCB has a team coordinating volunteering opportunities within the organization providing an infrastructure that can be used for the Project. Technical knowledge to create and deliver the trainings and volunteering culture for social work coupled with corporate incentives providing employees with time off makes SCB the perfect corporate environment for this intrapreuneurship project.People involved in the project such as myself will be using their three volunteering days as well as some personal time especially until the project is live.
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
If the project will be extended to the emerging markets of Africa and Asia, the trainers/volunteers might need to provide the training via webinar sessions or sometimes travel, which might require budget allocation from the bank. But if a social finance group is created, the project will be developed under its business strategy and associated budget.
Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.
Having recently completed my UK Social Finance Market research and my graduation thesis on the same subject, I have a fresh network comprising of major investors, support organizations and incubators of the UK Social Finance Industry as well as social enterprises I worked with. This network will be the key to source to find the right support organization for cooperation and the suitable social entrpreneurs to join the program as well as creating the training curriculum.
What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
SCB has a group promoting internal ideas and idea generation mechanisms such as this competition. The entries from SCB employees will also be considered and taken forward internally. I am in the process of getting internal feedback about my idea from my internal network which has been positive so far. My project is at “idea stage”and I hope that this competition will bring the recognition of its value and provide the necessary internal and external platform.

With the proper infrastructure, information can make the world more just, free, and sustainable. However, information, like any resource, does not get distributed equitably. My vision is to create an infrastructure for a more equitable distribution of information.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Obviously, this is a broad vision and will require many components. To begin, I will implement three: One, a phone application with live inventory and GPS tracking to produce analytics for an organization's best practices (of course, "best" depends on the organization). Two, a website, "GroupThink" for crowdsourcing ideas. Individuals can post ideas or problems and the internet community can refine the idea collaboratively. Three, a national bus tour to promote sustainable business and entrepreneurship (similar to what "Invisible Children" does. Profits from all these endeavors would go towards providing the technology and education (phones, to start) for accessing information to those who presently cannot.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
Phone App Example: Whole Foods has two hundred pounds of organic onions and 100 pounds of chicken in Southern California that will, presently, spoil if not sold that day. Instead, a soup kitchen can view this inventory dilemma and offer to buy the onions and chicken at 10% of their value. Whole Foods minimizes profit loss and the soup kitchen has more food to offer. A homeless person can look up where the food will be and reserve a seat.
Website: A college student from California wonders why in Massachusetts, where he attends school, there in insufficient signage for navigating suburban streets. He posts this observation and suddenly government employees, private business, and creative thinkers can collaborate on finding solutions. Since this is done publicly, any malicious exploitation of this dilemma becomes much more difficult.
Bus Tour: A bus shows up at Harvard University at the beginning of fall semester. A young, intelligent, and passionate team exits the vehicle and talks for 15 minutes to an advanced economics class. Sitting in the class, John Doe, a college senior currently applying to I-Banking positions and extremely busy with school work, learns about the incredible, and little known, opportunities that have only just come into existence. He realizes he can make money to pay off is college loans and actually do good too. Instead of working at Goldman Sachs, he takes a job with LGT Venture Philanthropy.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
Our competition is any person or group that can profit from controlling information. For example, a hedge fund using insider information for investments. We will use our power to publicly share and deliver relevant information to the world. This information could range from a free concert in the park happening that night to methods of navigating censored websites for Chinese citizens.
The challenge is that though information is free, the resources to spread information are not. Those with that power presently want to continue to hold that power, like we all would. New technology, especially phone apps, are like the wild west right now. The successful colonizers of this new world will define the future of humanity.

I am a highly motivated thinker. I recently moved from the jungle in Panama as a Peace Corps Volunteer to a gated community in Scottsdale, Arizona as a Merrill Lynch Wealth Management Consultant. Coupled with my other unique life experiences, I have a global perspective and a passionate desire to make a more just and sustainable world.
What makes you an intrapreneur? What are the skills, capabilities, and personality traits that make you an intrapreneur?
I don't respect authority, trust those with power, or listen well. I have the requisite arrogance, ignorance, and narcissism to believe I am meant to change the world. If standardized tests are a valid measurement of intelligence (SAT 1600, GRE 1600, IQ 165), I am a genius. Chance has placed me in the world with a wealth of opportunity, ability, and freedom. For me, it is a moral obligation to utilize these resources for the greatest good I can conceive of. Acting in my own self-interest, this work satisfies me more than all else.

I believe that an organization based upon "equitable information" distribution hardly exists and only recently became possible with technological innovations like phone applications and satellite phone service.

In a single day, I stopped living alone and adjacent a river with the Ngobe Indigenous Tribe in the Panamanian jungle and started living adjacent a golf course in a gated community in Scottsdale, Arizona - from The Peace Corps to Merrill Lynch. The experience produced original insights about the economy, technology, and the environment. Coming back to the states has exposed me to advances in technology that can serve the greater good. I didn't even know what Phone App was until this year!
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
So far I have bothered a lot of my friends on facebook and stopped being very productive at Merrill Lynch. I have also made contact with decision makers in large organizations and some have expressed interest. I am meeting with the CIO of a multi-billion dollar corporation in a few days.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
22% increase in a Utopic world.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
The potential profits that have and will continue to be possible for those who use technology to control information make for a lot of interested parties. I plan to overcome them by being more intelligent and benevolent and by smiling a lot.

How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
I am leveraging my business acumen, liberal arts education, and charisma to make my vision reality. I am writing this application on Christmas in a coffee shop. This is all I do with my time.
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
Funds can come from a small service charge for product sales (like Square) and advertising sales. The basic infrastructure can be done for almost free and then, with sufficient web traffic and app downloads, the money should roll right in. My support ultimately comes from the nature of information: "Information wants to be free." The forces of the universe have aligned technology with information and a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer in such a way that we can make the world more just and sustainable.
Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.
Whole Foods, wealth relatives, Techstars, kickapps, readyappsdev.com, google, the internet.
What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
The lack of a formal business plan and my lack of cash has limited my success. I resolved the bsuiness plan dilemma this past weekend and have meetings schedule with venture capitalists, corporations, and many others. The cash will follow.
My Idea and Project is very secure, useful, systematic, friendly for the whole world of Present and Future. I am sure that the World will cooperate for this project and will like to contact me.

I want to provide the parents with gas cards to ease the finacial burden that this disease can cause.

I spend day in and day out trying to support these kids. I'm a very passionate person and when I have a idea that can change someone else's life then I will pursue it to the end. I believe life is about helping those in need around you. I have a 11 year old daughter as well and I want to teach her that supporting people and making a diffrence in the world is such an important factor and she helps other kids her age aware of the gift of giving.

Start-Up (a pilot that has just begun operating)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
I want to help inform the public about sickle cell disease in children. I want to be able to help kids that have this disease receive gift baskets that are personalized just for them these baskets will be given to the child on their admission to the hospital (as these kids require many hospital stays due to the nature of the disease). I also want to help the parents or caregiver of these kids with gas cards to help them get to and from the hospital. I want to show the world that giving to others in need is very important and teaching our youth is what we need to do as they are our future. I will be in contact with hospitals and clinic that treat children with this disease. I will also be in contact with the Department of Health and Human Services who can give the public.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
We need donations to help support this cause whether it be donations of money or donations of new gifts(such as toys, teddy bears, stickers, journals, coloring paper, bubbles, photo albums etc.) that can be put into the baskets. The money will be used to buy the supplies needed to make the baskets. It will also be used to purchase gas cards for the parents or caregivers of these children.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
There are not any other organizations out there that provide what I want to provide for kids with sickle cell disease. All donations will go directly to support these kids and their parents. Upon request we can provide receipts showing what has been purchased to supply the need. We will also be showing the amount of money that has been collected thus far and people can remain anonymous or leave a comment when they donate. There will also be a section with testimonials.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
Once we start to collect money and donations of gifts. I will go and order supplies needed to fill the baskets. I will either purchase bulks of toys and goodies online or I will go to one of the retail stores and buy a bulk supply. I will be in contact with gas companies to purchase reloadable gas cards for the parents. I will also ask that these companies help sponsor our organization. I will do all of the work needed to make up the gift baskets. I will also use my own money and time to contact hospitals and clinics and let them know about this project and give them information on contacting me when they have a child in need. I also want to inclube a letter of support that will be included in the baskets for the children. Everytime that we recieve a donation it will be updated in our system for public viewing. I will organize a yearly event to honor the kids with sickle cell disease.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
The people that I will be working with will be hospitals, clinics, DHHS, the companies that I will be purchasing supplies from as well as people that want to help spread the word of what we are all about and what we are trying to do. There are many foundations and organizations out here that help with information about sickle cell disease but I find that they only support people in the area that their foundation is located this inhibits many people from receiving help. On the other hand I will be providing services to anyone in need and not neglect a person just because they do not live in my same state. I believe so much in helping people that I will never not give to a person in need because they are too far away.

Arrick is a man that I meet in a clinic for kids with Sickle Cell disease. Arrick has inspired me to start this organization, he has shared with me that one of his nephews has a bad case of sickle cell disease and at the age of 4 has been hospitalized numerous times and has had to have surgery due to this disease. So I put together a bassket of goodies and provided him with a gas card to be able to make it to the hospital to visit his newphe before surgery. He was so greatful and ever since then this has been a goal of mine, as he told me how happy the newphe was when he got his bassket. Ever since then I have been trying to make this happen and I will spend day in and day out to see this grown.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
I have been spreading the word and trying to get people to help fund this project so far I have collected 11 dollars. The peope that have given the money thus far have recevied a thank you note from me. Does not sound like much but every bit counts. I was and will be grateful for what every amount anyone can donate. That money will sit in a account until I get enough to make my first basket and get the first gas card.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
In the next couple of years I hope to have collected at least $10,000 this would be enough money to fund 100 kids and their parents TEDDY BEARS $10 each total is $1000, TOYS $12 each total is $1200, PHOTO ALBUM $10 each total is $1000, STICKERS $5 each total is $500, COLORING BOOKS $3 each total is $300, JOURNALS $10 each total is $1000, GAS CARDS $50 each total is $5000, PERSONAL LETTER FROM ME Free total budget needed for 100 kids is $10,000
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
Getting people to understand what I'm doing and knowing about this project of mine will be the biggest hinder. I will try my best to get past this by spreading the word through social media and posting flyers.
read more↓↑ hide↑ hideWhat is the benefit or value you're creating for your business?
Through public and or private donations I hope to fund my project. I think that once I have been able to helpa few families they will spread the word about what I'm doing and in turn this will increase public awareness of my project and people will donate.
How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
All monies gained through donations will be divided equally with a certain percentage set aside to ensure that the budget is used in a manner as to allow the profit and secure that this project will be available for sometime. Making sure that we keep a certain amount of funds in the account when there are times that the donations have slowed. This will ensure that we can still provide baskets and gas cards for our clients.
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
I feel as if we start to get donations and help the families they will spread the word. I feel like hospitals and clinics will want to donate to this project because in turn it can benifit them as well as they will get recognition for their support and I will recommend a patient to a certain clinic in return for funds donated to this project by the sponser.
Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.
I'm doing this all by my self now as I have a few family members that will be willing to share their time in helping me. I have campaigned online to help fund this project.
What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
I have been told by all my freinds and family that they will help spread the word. I have only received a small amout of funds not even enought to make one gift basket. The funds that I have so far have been given by individuals not any companies or sponsers. I have spread my word to many people but as of yet have not heard back from any.
Creating donation vending machines not only brings non-profits and NGOs directly to the public, but allows the citizen sector to take the management of their donations into their own hands. Values would not be pre-set, so if an individual wishes to charge $1.75 for Red Cross, they are able to do so. Economically, this room for flexibility will allow a larger pool of donations to be amassed, benefiting both non-profits and NGOs significantly in the long term.

Combining Leroy Merlin strength and passion together with its close network (customers, suppliers) and social partners in order to create new solutions that meet the needs of people at the base of the pyramid (BoP), who are non-client citizens in a situation of precarious housing.

After developing a micro-credit project in Chile 20 years ago, I now have the opportunity to strike the same balance between public good and economic sustainability by developing social business at the heart of Leroy Merlin.
I’m really motivated to change the rules of the game in order to start innovative projects, with meaningful and concrete solutions.
Social business can be a transformative avenue for a company's business strategies. It reaffirms the company's mission: help each person obtain their dream home.
The real challenge lies in making this dream possible for everyone—as many people as possible—and especially those in financially challenged situations.
What makes you an intrapreneur? What are the skills, capabilities, and personality traits that make you an intrapreneur?
An intrapreneur is an innovator who changes the rules of the game, capable of creating a change while integrating it into the company's strategies.
I try to bring different energies and various skills to my projects. Driven by the vision of an emerging future that I communicate with enthusiasm, I am pragmatic and action-oriented, quickly moving from talk to action. Think big and start small. The intrapreneur must be persistent and patient, flexible and demanding not just in style, but also at his core. He networks both inside and outside the organization—his creativity aims at creating value. He is a driving force and an accelerator of change within his company.

Start-Up (a pilot that has just begun operating)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
The different forms of precariousness at the housing level do not allow people to have a dignified standard of living, whether they are homeowners, tenants of social housing or people waiting for this type of housing. The problem includes people's isolation, lack of DIY know-how to equip/rehabilitate homes, and the cost of access to certain products. The relationship between beneficiaries, social actors and private land is at the heart of the project.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Creating an incubator for social business projects within Leroy Merlin, allowing innovative partnerships with actors in the field. The skills and passion of the staff (and their close networks, customers and suppliers) can help find solutions for insecure living conditions in a "no loss/no gain" model for sustainable development on a large scale. Tracks explored in this pilot phase are:
- "DIY and rental maintenance" modules, in preparation to relocate people waiting for social housing, who are currently living in Emmaus Solidarity shelters.
- The participation of the housing equipment solidarity bank to equip clean, but empty lodgings.
- Construction of Auto Accompanied Restoration projects with the Companions builders for 150 homes in Clichy sous Bois.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
The main paradigm shift lies in the fact that the resolution of a social purpose is considered an integral part of the company business; it is not a limited or isolated action. This willingness to create shared value for the benefit of the greatest number of people in precarious housing situations is unique, as well as the construction of partnerships with actors in this field.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
The preparatory workshop for relocation has created a unique collaboration space for people who would never meet in any other situation.
The Solidarity Emmaus experience supports disadvantaged populations to determine the elements that better prepare them to obtain social housing. This is combined with educational engineering from the Leroy Merlin Training Centre, in which staff share DIY "job actions" and other skills with people who really need them.
- The animation module is carried out in a special training space, at a store with sales consultants, which reinforces participants’ pride and self-esteem.
- The store manager and human resources manager foster commitment that gives collaborators a sense of purpose and enhances their motivation.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
Public Authorities, especially at local level, public housing offices, social housing institutions, associations of general interest: many actors coexist but rarely does their work combine the type of skills and passion present in the private sector. Innovation with stakeholders in the field is a fundamental condition for the success of the project. With these new alliances of various profiles, new and hybrids solutions will be found. A major challenge will be to overcome pre-existing power structures and defining responsibilities of each stakeholder.

> A first experience of creating a micro-credit institution 20 years ago in Santiago, Chile introduced me to social business, self-sufficiency and maximized social impact (in connection with the Grameen Bank Yunus)
> The development of innovative business/ private actors associations in the field in a model "no loss / no profit", especially with Grameen Danone
> On the one hand, my commitment was triggered by life changing testimonies and by the consideration and the dignity of people due to the improvement of their housing in Chile, Togo, Benin, Brazil, the Philippines, France and Spain. Lifestyle is structuring for all man!
> On the other hand, my commitment was triggered by the inclusion vision at the heart of the company business, finding new solutions to improve the living conditions of the poorest, in serving the company vision. While a paradigm shift!
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
> The realization of 9 relocation preparation workshops with 4-7 participants each, allowing the acquisition of basic DIY to build and maintain housing on the basis of a co-educational frame created with Emmaus Solidarity.
> Establishment of a partnership with the Companions builders to rehabilitate 150 housing in the area of Chêne pointu in Clichy-sous-Bois: training of beneficiaries, implementation of a tool-library, cost price materials, integration of passionate DIY customers from the nearest store in order to increase the numbers of volunteers on these "meaningful" projects.
> The participation of the housing equipment solidarity Bank (launched by Emmaus Challenge and Carrefour mid 2012) for the provision of unsold and stock excess to allow the first housing equipment and the rights-holders are qualified by social workers and social landlords.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
In the next 3 years:
> Rehabilitation of 1000 housing with 5 partner organizations
> Training of 200 people housed in emergency structures to prepare them for re-housing.
> Development of 2000 housing through the housing equipment solidarity Bank
> Establishment of a volunteer yourselfers clients network, 300 participants in France
> All Group employees in France strengthen their sense of belonging by knowledge of projects, 600 collaborators have contributed concretely to one of the projects
> Starting operations in 4 countries (in addition to France)
> Top 10 international cooperation projects initiated by collaborators in countries where the group is not present
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
- Poor integration understanding of the social impact research at the heart of the company's business in a logic "no loss / no profit"> we must develop a methodology for project management, which validates the model and expected benefits
- Lack of commitment to the store network in order to free up time for their employees for this new kind of mission> enhance learning at the heart of the collaborator profession.
- No decision to validate a specific mode of governance in social innovation, linked to the management of the company and with adequate resources to pursue R & D

Africans were generally invisible in the dialogue and the presentation of the issues. I’m a Scientist at GlaxoSmithKline based in the RTP, NC. My company exists to help people do more, feel better & live longer. I had my basic education through my Masters degree in Ghana before I left to pursue a PhD in chemistry in the USA. Alongside my fulltime job at GSK, I volunteer for a non-profit whose mission is to empower underprivileged communities through health education and provision of basic educational materials.
What makes you an intrapreneur? What are the skills, capabilities, and personality traits that make you an intrapreneur?
My job requires interfacing between different groups with divergent goals, customers at multiple sites and negotiating with different vendors. This demand resolve, original thinking, and business-like approach to getting things done.
I have had to look for new ways to improve systems, and advance scalable solutions. As a process chemist, I undertake feasibility reactions at small scale and indentify solution to scale them up. I can transfer this background to identify and solve large-scale social problems.
I have global understanding of the health/educational needs around the world and the cultural understanding of the communities that grapple with these challenges, I believe these, in addition to the energy and passion I have, are vital in generating the necessary social changes.

Idea (you're poised to launch)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
1: Currently, millions of children die each year in the developing world, especially Africa, from diseases that are preventable through vaccination. Even in countries where reasonably forceful vaccination programs exist, and when vaccines are available at significantly discounted prices or free, coverage can be reasonably low in select regions and it is possible to find a whole community reject vaccination due to religious, cultural and other factors. Child and maternal mortality can remain unacceptable high which place place high economic toll on these countries.
2: Volunteerism and citizen participation among the African privileged is insufficient to fill in the gap left by corps. govt, and NGOs.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
I propose a Mobile HeathEd (and Change Hero Award), a solution that is based on exploiting the cultural roots and understanding of employees/volunteers to make an outreach to communities/regions with identified health crisis (low vaccination coverage, high infant mortality etc) with target community education/health campaign. The goal is to build trust and affect large scale cultural and attitudinal changes with resultant positive social changes such as increase vaccination rates and improve child and maternal health outcomes.
To encourage citizen participation among the African privileged (at home & in the Diaspora), Change Hero Award will be instituted. Over the course of a year, communities can nominate and vote for the individuals they want to nominate for recognition for significant contribution to health and education. The hope is that this will spur individual citizens to supplement the efforts by governments, NGOs, and foundation in causing social change on the continent.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
In communities in Sub-Saharan Africa, even when vaccines are available at much reduced price, they may still not be accessible to the children who need them due not only to economic factors but also cultural and religious factors and lack of information. It is one thing to have buy-in from the government, it is another thing to have buy-in and commitment from the community at all levels. Building TRUST with the communities at the grassroots level is paramount to success.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
In Jan/Feb 2012, I dedicated my own GSK vacation to do a community outreach in Ghana, teaching in rural schools and educating village communities on malaria and other preventable diseases. I first hand got to understand how much folks appreciate hearing from someone who indentifies the culture, doesn’t appear patronizing even when the mood calls for it and is willing to hear their side of the story. I also got to realize the magnitude of the healthcare challenges, the varied misperception of orthodox medicine (especially vaccines for children) held by many people.
On a large scale, as proposed in this project, the next step would be connecting these communities with their local primary health care (PHC). This would be easier if collaborating with the PHC. We could also set up Community Champions that would be responsible for linking the communities with their PHC facilities. SMS text messaging & other models can be employed.
I trust such a model can be scaled up and replicated across several countries and communities by identifying colleagues/volunteers who meet two basic criteria:
1.They have cultural backgrounds or understanding that helps them to be aware of the several of factors that are impediments to vaccination campaigns in communities
2.They can communicate our corporate values and scientific basis and value of our products (vaccines) to these communities in a way they can understand.
Eventually, the end goal is to encourage more privileged Africans to be involved in volunteerism and community participation which is what Change Hero Award aims accomplish.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
Periodically, the government or other organizations run vaccination campaigns on television and in print media when there is the need for mass vaccination. However, the people that are left out in vaccination programs are the one that are difficult to reach by means of television and such mass media channels. The educational campaign proposed in Mobile EdHealth will focus on target communities with target message and thereby make the most impact.
There are many programs that focus on Arts &celebrities but none that targets everyday people making difference in their communities. Change Hero Awards will send a message to the new generation that community participation and social contribution is honorable and encouraged.

One of the stories that inspire this idea is the polio debacle in Nigeria a few years ago. In 2003, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) embarked on an aggressive campaign to eradicate polio in the country where it was endemic. Soon after the campaign started Nigeria halted immunization program on fear that vaccines had been contaminated with anti-fertility & HIV agents (due to a material posted on an internet site). The campaign in Nigeria was focused on the northern part of the country (because that was where the virus was endemic. Northern Nigeria is also predominantly Muslim, which led to conclusion that the vaccination was a plot by Western governments to reduce the population of Muslims worldwide. The controversy lasted for 16 months.
With Mobile HealthEd approach, instead of concluding that the people were rejecting vaccination as a result ignorance or lack of education, we try to understand the underlying logic to their anxieties and try to address them.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
I have already undertaken a prototype program in Ghana where I have roots and record remarkable success as I talked to village schools, churches, and communities in one district.
Even though that was through a personal giving back to community effort, I envision a scenario where it can be scaled up to ‘mix corporate good doing with strong business goals’. Since we’re already selling our products to some of these communities at differential pricing, we might as well get as much message out in order to get as much products out and of course save as many lives.
Change Hero Award is a new idea that can go hand in hand with Mobile HealthEd. If instituted, the impact will be a new wave of volunteerism and citizen involvement among the advantaged Africans who are in most cases cut off from the communities where the problems are.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
Part of year one may require set up, selecting a country & mapping an area, studying the health burden vis-à-vis the culture, these can be accomplished while employee(s) conducts their regular full time job. By incorporating some of these early learnings forward, Mobile HealthEd could accelerate operations into communities & soon we could have data showing dramatic changing attitudes towards vaccines accompanied by high vaccination coverage in otherwise poor coverage catchment areas. By Year three, Mobile HealthEd could radicalize the way we message our product to the developing world.
A website would be built for Change Hero Awards by Year 1 and a volunteer team in host country set up & promotional activities started. Social media channels will be aggressively employed for promotion.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
Barriers to success include long term sustainability, government and local bureaucracy, and perceived competition from local health centers.
Will ensure long-term sustainability and continued success by embedding local organizations/ individuals in the educational campaign. Mobile HealthEd and local groups/individuals would learn from one another with the goal of spreading accountability and replicating the social impact of the project.
Significant resource will be dedicated to educating local activists/organizations through seminars and workshops. These individuals or indigenous groups could become change ambassadors in their communities.
Working with local health centers, we can make use of the hospitality local communities show towards outside groups and multiply the impact

GSK develops vaccines some of which is sold the Developing World at significantly reduced pricing. With Mobile HealthEd, GSK will get ROI by choosing volume over profit for the products we sell to the world’s poorest countries by encouraging broader participation and save more lives as a result. The trust we build with the communities will translate to loyalty towards our products. Data we collect from the field will guide our approach pricing in developing countries, lobbying, marketing ethics and product donations & philanthropic activities.
How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
GSK has an ongoing employee volunteer-based program called PULSE that leverages internal skills to support non-profit organizations to facilitate educational and health projects around the world. Though Mobile HealthEd is of a different scale and scope and specific in its mission, PULSE resources would be instrumental and synergistic.
As a global organization with operations in over 100 countries, in places where we market our product that have unique healthcare challenges, we can exploit the geographical roots of our employees in these places to make lasting social changes while at the same advancing our business cause.
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
Funding will be sought from the Office of the CEO, and Developing Countries and Market Access (Least Developed Countries Unit), external non-profit organizations.
Long term funding responsibility can be spread out by inviting other founders such as Bill & Melida Gates Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative and other NGOs. And finally, because changing attitudes towards vaccines (and drugs) and the industry benefits the whole pharmaceutical industry, other companies that have footprints in the regions where Mobile HealthEd operates could be invited to support financially.
Sponsorship from Corporations, government agencies & Foundations together with other monetization options will be sought to support the Change Hero Awards.
Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.
GSK CEO Andrew Witty has on many occasions spoken passionately about medicines for the developing world especially vaccines and so getting some sponsorship from the CEO’s Office will be vital for success. Will also build on existing relationship with Employee Resource Groups, GSK colleagues and the PULSE network. An endorsement from the HR Talent & Leadership Development and GSK Functional Heads will be crucially sought. Network of NGO and Non-profit organizations, academia
What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
Proposal was first submitted as part of GSK PULSE Lab request for ideas and was one of few recommended after rigorous panel review. Line Manager has been supportive of idea and encouraged pursuit of proposal.

The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
The accounting and strengthening of a person's life work should be intact, I see an opportunity to impact how a person is looked at and even treated by accounting for their tasks completed.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
The Primary System is: Computer software/hardware that keeps track of all completed tasks of every individual within the city or community. It also lists all available tasks that are open for completion. The Primary System accounts for the completed tasks.
How it works: Person's monetary wealth is programmed into system along with a profile containing, experience level, personal info and family info. Person searches tasks, finds an available task and selects it to become pending. Once task is completed that task is listed in to the personal profile. Person goes to the store slides PSC (primary system card) store attendant can see the person's work history and contribution to the society.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
A person that is appreciated by an action tends to invest more energy. By accounting for all tasks competed that person is more than a Figure, they become an essential role player and committed partner in how that society develops. "Everyone is my company, for I am in the company of everyone." In our societies a demand for honesty and diligence defines who gets the job. With The Primary System it is irrefutable who did the job. Giving credit where credit is do.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
With myself as the example: I am a hard working labor intensive type of person, so tasks under these conditions would be perfect for me. As each task is completed the community sees how I am contributing to society and I am building a profile that will one day show my involvement in the communities design and productivity. "There is only one price for a person's contribution to society, that being the full recognition of the recorded task completed." With The Primary System there is only up!
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
Neither peers nor competitors derive from "The Primary System". It is an innovative way to begin new communities, or transition failing communities. Cities with large populations would only be a consideration after world leaders saw the incremental growth in community mural and productivity.

Summary: What specific issue or problem does your Venture address?
The Global Stewardship Initiatives focus on raising awareness among youth concerning local and global forms of social injustice. We believe that it is the youth who can implement lasting social change if they feel empowered. We aim to inspire our audience of high school students to recognize surrounding injustice and offer tools for social change through education and interactive workshops. This education and empowerment is intended to create direct action from the high school students to address the issues. The anticipated projects developed by the youth may refer back to, but are not limited to, the specific topics discussed during the Initiatives’ workshops.
Misson Statement: What will your venture do?
The Global Stewardship Initiatives aim to engage youth in high school to raise awareness and create a community of young social entrepreneurs whose mission is to take action in their local and global communities. Our two public engagement activities, Justice High and Change Pilotz, support this mission through direct outreach to high school students and the delivery of interactive workshops aimed at empowering youth to enact positive change in their communities.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
We plan to deliver Justice High symposium events at two Lower Mainland high schools, in January and February 2013, reaching approximately 120 youth. Building on established connections with these hosting schools, youth will be invited from many different high schools across Greater Vancouver. Through interactive workshops addressing specific social justice issues (poverty and marginalization in the Downtown Eastside; environmental justice; local and global food security) and inspiring keynote speakers, these students will be encouraged to find creative ways of raising awareness of these issues in their own communities and developing their own initiatives to address them. Those students who are inspired to develop their own social enterprises addressing a specific issue will be invited to attend the Change Pilotz social entrepreneur camp in March, where they will be mentored to develop their ideas into a viable project. Following the camp, students will have the opportunity to pitch their project proposal to a panel of judges (drawn from the local non-profit and social entrepreneurial community) who will award one or more seed grants to deserving projects.
The Community: Define your community, local or international, that you will work on behalf of. What population is affected? Are there other organizations working in this space?
This year’s Global Stewardship Initiatives focus on both the local and global community. The initiatives are directed towards high school students of the Lower Mainland. Capilano University students will be facilitating workshops on homelessness, poverty, food security, environmental justice and sustainability, bullying and tools for taking action. We will link high school students to organizations that are involved in the fight against injustice, both in Canada and internationally. One organization doing similar work is Check Your Head, as they deliver youth-run workshops in high schools and other community spaces. The Global Stewardship Initiatives are unique in that we build on our workshops through the fostering of social entrepreneurship in our Change Pilotz camp.
Founding Story: What inspired your venture? Why?
The Global Stewardship Project has been operated since 2010 by Capilano University’s Global Stewardship students. We have been inspired each year to share what we’ve learned about global issues, and creating meaningful change, with students in our communities. The Global Stewardship students of 2010 spearheaded our project as they felt inspired to share what they had learned and reach out to engage others. The initiatives were funded until 2012 by the Canadian International Development Agency. The present Global Stewardship students feel strongly about carrying on this initiative in 2013 after seeing the success of the Global Stewardship Project in the past years. We are inspired by the process and results of teaching youth about social change.
What is your long-term vision for your Venture?
The students of the Global Stewardship program envision the continuation of the Global Stewardship Initiatives as a means of Public Engagement. Our vision is to create a sustainable social change education program. We hope to further the development of the Global Stewardship Initiatives by recording each step in the organization process, the network we have developed, and the successes and failures of the Initiatives. We envision a fortified relationship with the supporting schools, so the interest in the events can be maintained and extended through positive reputation. We also hope to establish reliable sources of funding for the projects in the future.

As we enter the third year of the Global Stewardship Initiatives we are looking to build on the successes of past years and take the project further. We aim for sustainability as an organization, and to further act as long-term mentors to the students that we’ve worked to empower through our Justice High and Change Pilotz workshops. Our project has been handed down each year to new students entering the Global Stewardship Program at Capilano University; this year we hope to implement long-term mentorship programs between Global Stewardship students and our Justice High and Change Pilotz participants, along with running and growing our annual workshops. The Global Stewardship Initiatives aim to educate youth about social and environmental issues both locally and internationally. We strive to empower a collective of approximately 120 youth by teaching them about the injustices that affect their lives as well as the tools needed to produce social change. We hope to provide a group of students or an individual student with a seed grant to pursue their own social entrepreneurship projects.
Winning entries present a strong plan for how they will achieve and track growth. Identify your six-month milestone for growing your impact
As both projects will take place within the next six-months our six month milestone itself would be the success of the projects.
Task 1
Reach out to high school students through advertising online, within the public, and through schools via Capilano students.
Task 2
Secure funding in order to hire keynote speakers, provide nutritious meals, buy facilitation supplies and pay for other expenses
Task 3
Evaluate the logistics of the workshops and receive mentorship from fellow students in order to present effective programs.
Now think bigger! Identify your 12-month impact milestone
The twelve-month impact milestone will be to develop a “how-to” model to offer to the future Global Stewardship students.
Task 1
Create a mentoring position that will act as a supportive supportive role model and adviser to the high school students.
Task 2
Create a blog for the participants of the Initiatives so that they may share their experiences, progress and opportunities.
Task 3
Record the feedback of the youth who have gone through the programs to help us improve on our own methods.

The aim for the Global Stewardship Initiatives 2013 is to engage and inspire youth. We would consider ourselves successful in the short term if we deliver high-caliber programs that attract more than 100 youth participants. We would assess the short-term impact of these programs through evaluations completed by the students after participating. Success can also be defined through the degree of youths’ participation on the social media sites to be maintained by the Capilano students, such as the blog and the Facebook page. This year we hope to stay connected to the students we work with and use their feedback to improve our initiatives. We will consider Justice High a success if our host high schools invite us to deliver our programs to their students again in 2014. Change Pilotz will be judged successful if the camp participants continue to seek our mentorship and we are able to help them implement their social entrepreneurial projects.
In the long-term (1 year?)
The long term goal of the Global Stewardship Initiatives is to create a body of passionate vocal and informed youth who will take a stand and give a strong articulate voice to the concerns of the younger generation. We would define success as the movement that the youth created within their high schools, in their communities and in their homes. Success in the high school students' schools would be defined as the creation of a social justice club, where issues of injustice, movements of social change, and event planning can be discussed. The success within the high schools could also be defined through the interest and enrollment in such courses as Social Justice 12 or Global Stewardship 12. Success can be defined in the students' communities through a dedication to volunteer their time to stewardship activities through local organizations. Community success can also be demonstrated through the creation of social entrepreneurship projects and/or organizations dedicated to supporting local and global causes. The success of the Global Stewardship Initiatives can be further defined in the homes of the participants through sustainable changes to practices and household management that are sensitive to global and local issues. Finally, the Initiatives can also define success in the ways in which next year's organization of the projects is adapted to the measurements of successes and failures, as a result of the previous year's analysis of success.
How will you measure success?
The measure of success for the Global Stewardship Initiatives is gauged on our ability to foster the development of social projects spearheaded by youth who attend our programs. As inspiration is sometimes hard to measure, our success will be based on the number of youth who attend our programs, the initiatives taken by the youth afterwards, and the continuation of those initiatives in the long run. Success can be monitored through the responses on the Global Stewardship Initiatives blog and Facebook page. We will measure success through the youths’ continued visitation of the page and participation in question and response sections on the blog, as this type of participation represents the students' continued interest in developing their social change toolbox. Success will also be measured from the continued contact of the students with their Capilano mentor. Our success will be defined by our ability to help the students along the way and the inspiration we can offer through our availability to them. A continued communication between student and mentor demonstrates a furthered interest in social change work and is beneficial to both parties. While we hope that youth who attend our programs continue projects started with us, it is reasonable to expect that not all of the projects taken on by the students will continue past their creation. We will still however consider ourselves successful so long as we have engaged the youth in a positive way and fostered the ideals of social change work in them.
Why?
Measuring success highlights both the success and failures of the projects so they may be adapted for greater sustainability.

I'm an entrepreneur at heart in a large corporation. I think a lot about how to shape the future of technology and design toward a more livable and sustainable world. Within IBM's social computing research team, I focus on user experience design, software development, and social research. In my three years, we've focused on city infrastructure, mobile in Africa, healthcare, internal project crowdfunding, and IBM's Watson natural language system. We're the voice of the human within a technology-driven enterprise, and I'm the voice of good design within the team.
What makes you an intrapreneur? What are the skills, capabilities, and personality traits that make you an intrapreneur?
I've initiated many of the projects I've worked on and generated many of the ideas and visions that move my teams forward. I use design thinking to encourage brainstorming and outside-the-box thinking, and I use visual design as a rallying point to communicate people's ideas to the rest of the team. I'm usually the guy at the white board facilitating groups of PhDs from various disciplines. I also developed an internal crowdfunding system to change the way resources are allocated at IBM Research (and soon to the rest of the company) and allow new intrapreneurs to surface.

Growth (your pilot is up and running, and starting to expand)
The Need: What social or environmental problem are you trying to solve?
When I joined IBM, the company was starting to take Africa seriously as a market but lacked channels for delivering new innovations to the market. It was a typical sales approach, focused mainly on South Africa and ignoring other key markets.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
I went about addressing this problem in two ways. First, in IBM's Technology Strategy group, I conducted a study on IBM's innovation in Africa by interviewing over 60 IBMers from every geography and business unit. I used this research to make specific product recommendations, as well as infrastructure and process recommendations, including the creation of an IBM Research office in Nairobi. This report was widely circulated, used in technical strategy planning, and led to my placement in IBM's Social Computing Group, the team charged with leading the research effort in Africa, from New York. Building off IBM's success with projects like M-PESA and Spoken Web, I proposed an SMS App Store, which we built and nearly deployed in Nigeria and Kenya with telcos and universities before the project was cut due to lack of support. Now, over a year later, IBM has actually built out a research office in Nairobi, and with the infrastructure in place, there is new steam for these product ideas.
The Solution: Why is this solution innovative for your company and industry?
It was important for me to push forward innovation in Africa both in product and infrastructure. This way we could continuously innovate in market. When I joined IBM, there was very little hope that a research facility would be built on the ground. Now, IBM Research is finally on every inhabited continent. The specific product I proposed, the SMS App Store, was an innovative platform play for IBM to build off the success of one-off apps in Africa and empower local developers.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities.
The model of the SMS App Store was to build a platform analogous to the Apple App Store but for SMS- and voice-based apps. We built out developer tools, an app hosting platform, and an app store, accessible and browse-able on the web, by SMS, and by voice. Any user could opt into an app using a consistent account, making signing up effortless. Applications could range from medication alerts from health clinics to market information for farmers. We also explored integrating mobile payments, as well as end-user creation of mobile apps. We were awarded several patents for this work and garnered internal interest, but the project has not yet been successfully deployed. It is my hope that with IBM's research infrastructure fully in place in Kenya come 2013, these types of innovations will be able to surface, incorporate local knowledge in the design process, gain traction with partners, and be deployed much more easily than we could from New York.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
No company has created an app store-like platform specifically targeted at emerging markets. IBM runs many of the mobile platform innovations in emerging markets, including M-PESA and the Spoken Web, which we learned from in our development.

The ideas I put forward to IBM were grounded in nearly nine months of research and many conversations with employees throughout the company. They were also grounded in my personal research and experiences in Kenya, which convinced me that Kenya was poised to be a well of information technology innovation, which two years later, has become clear to those familiar with the market. The idea for the SMS App Store came when I presented the results of my personal and IBM-related research to the Social Computing Group, which the New York-based team charged with leading research projects in Africa. I was convinced IBM needed to make a big platform play in mobile applications, and the ensuing conversations led to the notion of an "app store."
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
The impact has been rallying the company around new ideas and the creation of the IBM Research lab in Nairobi. The app store has not been deployed but has generated patents and academic papers.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
Once the IBM Research lab is up and running, it is expected to make IBM a huge player in the market. No other technology company has a traditional research lab in Africa. Most multinationals still only have sales offices on the continent, putting IBM years ahead of its competition and uniquely positioning it to address local problems. Its main focus areas will be government, water, transportation, and human capacity development.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
The Nairobi lab could become victim to a number of barriers, including lack of research skills, losing internal or external funding support, or market forces. As a B2B company, IBM capacity for delivering innovation is always subject to the willingness of its partners and customers to innovate.

IBM has the buy-in of the Kenyan government, local business partners, and local universities to support the research facility long-term. This will continue to generate sustainable revenue for the company through the innovations that the office develops on the ground with partners and either incorporates into IBM products or deploys through partners.
How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
We have leveraged expertise throughout the company, including assets and insights from our India Research Lab (Spoken Web), UK telecom services (M-PESA), and African leadership. The Africa Research Lab in Nairobi will bring significant new internal resources to the initiative, including new talent from throughout Africa.
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
We hope to see the Nairobi lab take our work on the SMS App Store forward with a local business partner and/or apply or technology and insights to new projects.
Tell us about your partnerships across your company and externally that are key to your project's success.
What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
We received very positive feedback on the SMS App Store throughout the company, including IBM leadership. However, we were not able to successfully implement the project from New York due to lack of partnership opportunities on the ground. The Africa lab was received coolly at first, though a number of champions throughout the company were able to generate support by demonstrating the value it will contribute to our future in the market.
