Contemporary Cosmology for a Sustainable Society (CCSS) aims to instill a cosmology in our culture that provides the orientation, science-based skills, and ethical foundation needed to support a sustainable society. Infusing our culture with a contemporary cosmology makes us more aware of our place in, and connection to, the universe, allowing us to live in better balance and harmony with our surroundings.
Problem
Modernity has weakened our sense of cosmology. The older, traditional cosmologies are the legacy of spirituality and religions rooted in the prehistoric emergence of human culture. These traditional cosmologies are often seen as outdated and clashing with science, so they can be difficult to relate to from a modern perspective. On the other hand, laypersons can find it difficult to comprehend and appreciate the latest scientific discoveries. And our scientific establishment fails to provide an ethical and spiritual framework that helps us orient our lives and guide society's choices. The U.S. needs to inspire more young people to enter careers in science, engineering and technology.
Solution
Cosmology, when encountered as a vivid, and scientifically up-to-date story about the emergence of our universe, life, and intelligence, provokes a sense of awe that leads to wonder and reverence for creation. It can inspire a new generation to take up careers in science, engineering, and technology to enrich society.
