While recalling the golden words of Margaret Thatcher the great Prime Minister of the United Kingdom that ‘If you want something to be said, ask a man, and that when you want something to be got done ask a woman’.

It was she who recognized the woman as an important cornerstone for ushering a meaningful and fruitful society for all of us to live a decent and meaningful life as a member of a civilized society.

In today's world violence against women is increasing exceptionally. Out of total crimes committed against women, only a few valiant women show their courage to report against the injustice done to their body, mind and psyche to the authorities concerned with the hope that they shall be able to get justice at their hands, but they feel totally frustrated and let down when their reports are not even favorably received by the authorities and are not dealt with sympathetically and with a sense of responsibility to undo the wrong done to them.

The system we propose is likely to enable the women to a large extent come forward openly and freely to report against the wrong and injustice done to them which they didn’t and couldn't report so far on account of fear of disclosing their identity.

Problem

One feels sad to note that women in our society belong to that class of human beings whose fundamental rights are openly violated by all and sundry. They don't have a voice even. All that they possess is their physique, form and body and that too is not even their own. Though the society claims that they are the embodiment of our cultural heritage and values, they are not even looked upon with due care, love and affection as our mothers, sisters and wives. One feels that a serious re-look is needed to give them a place of respect and honour for their proper and better rehabilitation. The society, therefore, has to give them freedom to choose a lifestyle of their own including the dress they wear. They should be free to travel anywhere and everywhere they wish to, in order to seek and expand their social norms and also to socialize. In case, however, they exceed the social norms, the society must evolve a self correcting mechanisms, so that the embellishments that occur are easily, politely removed and avoided in order to create a healthy atmosphere needed for a better living conditions in the families and the society as a whole.

Solution

Through this forum we propose to evolve and create a new system which may usher in an era of good will for the tormented and frustrated women of our society. The system we propose is likely to enable the women ta a large extent to come forward openly and freely to report against the wrong and injustice done to them which they didn’t and couldn't report so far on account of fear of disclosing their identity. Statistical analysis which we propose to gather would enable the Government and our society at large to develop and improve an efficient system which presently does not recognize and distinguish their special rights as members of the society. It is hoped that our humble attempt would receive due support and attention from all well meaning members of our society not only to ameliorate and improve the lot of the women but shall also go a long way for ushering a meaningful and fruitful society for all of us to live a decent life which will also work for the betterment of our future living as a whole. It is hoped that our humble attempt would receive due support and attention from all well meaning members of our society not only to ameliorate and improve the lot of the women but shall also go a long way for ushering a meaningful and fruitful society for all of us to live a decent life which will also work for the betterment of our future living as a whole.

Example

Women feel shy in disclosing injustice done to their person because of the fear of social stigma that may impair their life. Often it is seen in the offices and their workplace, buses and trains and the market where they are found in large number that they are subjected to lewd jokes, jibs, taunts and other unhealthy remarks which they are often made to face and pocket due to their sheer shyness which with due help and support will enable them to fight boldly, fearlessly and valiantly which will likely to usher in healthy surroundings for them to work and move about freely and without any fear of humiliation for them to wear in life. They infact shall feel protected by well meaning system and society.

Thank you for your participation in AFI Growth Prize Competition. We have a key question for you:How exactly would your forum operate to get women to report? How would this create a change that would ripple out through society?

Please post your response as comment here, before Dec 15, 2012 to be considered for final evaluation.

Hi,

Thanks for the review and valuable comments. Please find the answers of the queries:

Q: How exactly would your forum operate to get women to report?

Ans: IDidNotReport is a mobile based engagement platform for location based citizen journalism where any women can report the gender based issues which they fail to report out of fear, shame, social stigma or lack of knowledge of networks to do so. We are using combination of Voice, SMS and Social Media to engage all sections of women and leverage the vast penetration of mobile phones and growing usage of IVR/SMS in communities with poor literacy where women are far less likely to be reporting misdeeds done to them online.

IDidNotReport will be available 24x7 across different platforms from IVR, SMS to web, smart phones enabling women at all levels to come forward and report what they have not reported so far. We will widely advertise our 24x7 helpline and through various channels of Social Media. Organizing workshops & training sessions is a part of the pilot program to train women especially in rural and remote areas where the voices of women are suppressed quite often, to create awareness about the initiative. We want to attain a stage where our work speaks for itself and no advertisement is required. With this, we also wish to partner with several social groups like NGOs, Community Radios, Women SHG, Rural Health Centers at various levels focused on public service, social entrepreneurship and concerned with the problems of crime against women to create a greater impact.

IDidNotReport largely depends on the women on-the-ground coming forward and reporting the misdeeds and wrongs done to them. IDidNotReport is an honest effort in this regard.

Q: How would this create a change that would ripple out through society?

Ans: It is envisaged that this forum will work as a deterrent for the prevention of crime against women and will immensely help women to report any untoward incident without disclosing her identity and jeopardizing her personality. Their living in the society is likely to become safer, healthier and better.

The society is daily flooded with crime against women and atrocities committed on them. They find themselves totally helpless and unprotected. Being a weaker section of the society owes a special responsibility towards them. It is the woman who is the backbone of a healthy social life. In case they feel protected they can build better and healthy families necessary for the betterment of the society. Thus there can be a great turning point in the future building of a better and healthy society, where the women neglected and tormented in the past will get a sigh of relief and will find them a part and parcel of the society having equal rights to live in times to come.

The women organizations that exist come into action only when the crime against women is committed. Hence there is need and necessity for awaking the consciences of the people and the society at large to create a Forum which can come to the aid and assistance of the women in peril. The data collected shall make them alive to the situations existing in the locality where such crimes are committed in abundance. They can then review the situation to enable them to take effective steps not only to protect women in peril but also to prevent recurrence of the same. The social impact of the use of this forum can very well be measured through constant review of the database information collected with the help of NGOs, the Police and the authorities concerned who can also be put on alert to make them act in a more meaning full manner. Our idea may be innovative but then, such innovations are the precursors of a better social living in the society.

Stories and experiences shared and reported will be published on all the available platforms to give them the outreach they deserved.

Anyone who visits the forum will be able to visualize on filterable maps designed to help identify and act on patterns of actions of violence.

If our project makes more Women to step out to report and share their experiences and in turn motivate millions like them who feel alienated, it would be really amazing. And if we could connect them with someone who can redress their issues and help them out to resettle in a normal life, it would complete our success story.

Thanks!
