In the past 15 years, I have had the opportunity to spend time with people of native backgrounds sharing and learning some of their beliefs, living skills, rituals and traditional ways. These important experiences inspire my art, my life as a person and feed my soul.
Rational basis: I believe tradition of a nation must be kept alive and transforming for the future generations. In the ways of a drum, tradition gives structure and rhythm, so we can all dance in harmony.
As a way to follow through with my interest and deepen the relationship with native people, I have developed a series of exciting artistic workshops inspired by activities, themes, symbols, and imagery inherent to the Eastern Cree traditional culture.
Goals and Objectives :
• To develop a sense of belonging and identity to the community
• To have fun creating and learning.
• To acquire and develop new artistic skills.
• To develop a better self esteem and confidence through self expression.

Problem

Youth around native communities are facing big challenges regarding drug and alcohol abuse, violence, identity quest, orientation and much more.

Solution

Art is transforming, it is a bridge to the soul. I believe troubled teens would highly benefit from inspiring artistic activities rooted in their own tradition, but channeled in contemporary ways of expression. The sacred space that I create for them allow stimulation, trust, openness and inspiration for genuine expression. By acquiring new artistic skills,in a friendly and joyful atmosphere, they develop a sense of belonging and a better self esteem.

Example

" As an example, a few students from a group of teens from Mistissini freely expressed in drawing,or painting on a collective mural some words of praise for a friend who had just committed suicide in the previous month. Many people from the community came to me to tell me these youth were happy with the workshop because expressing it through art made them feel happier, and they could talk about their grief amongst each other." I was invited to come back the next month to create a workshop for these specific teens.

Marketplace

There seems to be a great need for teens to be inspired and stimulated in native communities. So I think there is room for positive input and action.
