We are a social enterprise working for the economic benefit of farmers, working in three agro climatic Zone. Currently we are present in Jamui, Baniapur, Banka, Munger, Gopaljung (Bihar) and Mal, Kalinpong, Jal Dhaka (North Bengal). In North Bengal we are strategically located in the foothills of Himalayas very close to Nepal and Bhutan on the gateway to North East India and Sikkim. We are in Khandoshi village of Khed Taluka in Maharastra (Sister Concrn). We have our own organic lands and are doing cultivation of medicinal herbs. We take confirmed orders from companies and then cultivate the crops. Agro-technology for each crop is explained to our agronomists and farmers by the buyer company. We only use VRIKSHA AYURVEDA fertilizers as this leads to ZERO budget farming and maximum profits for the farmers. We regularly organize meetings among our farmers where the buyer company meets and interacts with them.OUR PILLARS: 3000 farmers, 700 SHG’s, 23 NGO’s, many STATE GOVT INSTITUTES.
Apart from these, this year we have started rabbit farming in Jamui District area of Bihar so that farmers can have extra income by selling rabbit meat on buyback basis. We have also installed a solar pump in Bihar for domestic use, fishery & irrigation. Our motto is to do well by doing good to the farmers, tribal and industry. This led to rise of living standards and eradication of extremist uprisings in these areas.

Problem

Rural areas of India especially the Chota Nagpur region covering Bihar and parts of North Bengal are suffering from acute poverty and most of the farmers have marginal income which makes them strive below poverty line. They have lands which are barren or wastelands and the scope of growing traditional crops is not economically viable as these are seasonal, have low margins and have high irrigation requirement.Due to all these factors the young people of these rural area are turning into terrorists and joining naxal extremist bodies. There is no development in any area neither in health care, education nor agriculture, the condition of women are even worse.Hence, livelihood generation and increase of living standards of these tribal farmers by various means was the need of the hour and will be the need in future for every rural sector of India where we want to expand our concept and bring smiles across the face of these rural people.

Solution

We offer maximum profit and livelihood generation for farmers in the tribal areas of Bihar and West Bengal. We help farmers to utilize their wastelands to grow medicinal herbs for supplying the pharma companies hence it yields maximum profit as these lands are not suitable for growth of traditional crops due to water scarcity and dry season for most part of the year.On top of that we have started rabbit farming for trade and export of rabbit meat. Our business model is scalable, replicable and has a social motive. We are encouraging young entrepreneurs to enter into the rural sector and help to uplift the condition of poor farmers. We have many groups helping us in our endeavor with their funds, technical know how, contacts to expand in the current market and in networking worldwide.

Example

We are making money by selling raw herbs in bulk. We always sign long term BUY BACK AGREEMENT with buyers, take ADVANCE in the form of seeds / agri inputs and sale them against LC or Cash & Carry. We have a better competitive edge and we demand better price as we control quality and eliminate middlemen. We have all India database, we are attending Seminars, Trade Fairs since the last 3 years and we advertise a lot in trade magazines, do Mail Campaign. Once any of our product is ready, we sent mail to almost 4821 buyers, the list is increasing and being added to sales@list.vedickrishi.com. We keep on updating this list on a regular basis, we are also member of different b2b sites. We offer superior quality at lower cost achieved by forward and backward integration and economics of scale.Operations spread across diverse agro-climatic zones and thereby making it possible to cultivate larger variety of plants. We add value in farmers life by giving them opportunity for waste land utilization and additional income. Our customers get quality, quantity and timely supply of raw material thus reducing the risk of under-utilization / poor utilization of there capacity making them confident and competitive and help them reduce the risk of quality rejection.

Marketplace

At present, for most of our products, we don’t have any competitor and are planning our production by the size of the market. We have huge opportunities in terms of both - farmers and markets. So, we are promoting other entrepreneurs since the market is big enough to accommodate many more at this stage. To enable India to compete with China - we require a lot of competitors in the days to come.

Thank you for your participation in AFI Growth Prize Competition. We have a key question for you: Given that there are no domestic competitors for most of Vedic Krishi's products--China is the main competitor--creating huge opportunities for farmers and markets, how will you encourage replication and rapid scaling?

Please post your response as comment here before Dec 15, 2012 to be considered for final evaluation.

Fri, 12/14/2012 - 07:51

China is our main competitor and to suceed REPLICATION & SCALING is the only way. We replicate and scale by involving more and more NGO's , farmers club and federation , the information of these are gathered through NABARD. In addition to this we help other entrepreneurs to replicate by introducing them to buyers.
