THE NEED: Describe the need for your solution and the size/dynamic of the community (ies) you will engage
Citezens of Nigeria lack access to critical information to enable them play an active role in democracy. We focus on one State in the troubled Niger Delta region - Delta State, providing a platform on FaceBook for citezens to share ideas information, photos and videos as where as recieving the same. We have grown from 30 members at the Start in January 2011 to over 8000 members. We now want to develop Radio and a regular Newsletter to reach those who are not online.
THE SOLUTION: Please explain what your solution offers and how it is innovative. How will you put your solution into the hands of users or beneficiaries? Be specific!
We to develop a community radio solution including web radio to reach the widest possible audience in Delta State and to begin to focus on key areas of development where community self-help and community action can be encouraged in helping to address basic social problems whilst advocating to government to engage with the community and address their problems with an eye on eleviating poverty.
THE MODEL: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference through use of information technology and media
Individuals take photos and vedoes of social ills in their areas, delapitating infrastructure, failed government programmes etc and post them on the FB group for discussion. We want to then turn the most popular into a newspaper (online and Offline) and discuss the issues raised on a community radio.
THE MARKETPLACE: Who are your peers and competitors? What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
Despite the short lifespan of the project we have become the largest Delta State Forum on FaceBook, we have over 6000 more members than our nearest sister organisation. We already have a good base on the ground in Nigeria and potential distribution Networks
Social Impact
This Entry is about (Issues)
FOUNDING STORY: We want to hear about your “Aha!” moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution’s potential to change the world.
On November 9th 2010, The Governor of Delta State was removed from office by an Appeals Court for electoral fraud. We started to discuss on a Delta State Forum on Facebook with a membership of about 900. This carried on till January 2011 with the conversation now focussing on the re-run elections planned. We felt that the conversations on that Forum focused on the elections and that we needed a foum that could focus on the broader development issues for the State and citizen's participation. Liberate Delta Peoples Forum was launched on 27th January 2011.
Specify both the depth and scale of your solution’s social impact to date
The group has grown from 30 initial members to over 8000 members less than 9 months. We get on average, 500 individual posts per day. On the day of elections we had more than 1000 individuals posting and commenting. Memebers of the Delta State Government have had to respond to issues raised and engage in open dialogue with the Forum. Liberate is wide known to Deltans in Nigeria as well as in the diaspora. There has been policy introduction and policy change, including the prioritisation of certain projects as a result of the discussions on the Forum.
What is your projected impact within the next 1-5 years? Is your idea replicable? If so, how?
We believe we can reach more than 100000 Deltans within 5years, sensitising them to the need for their engagement with the politics and development of the State. We believe that we can impact on there being freee and fair elections in the State, contributing to shaping government policy and ensuring good governance in the interest of the general ppulation.

What barriers have hindered the success of your project to date? How do you plan to overcome these and other challenges as you grow your solution?
We are only able to reach, in a meaningful sense, Deltans who are online and on facebook. We need to reach the general population in a way that enables access to the facebook discussion and particular to those Posters who have become regular and liked commentators.
How do you see the information-technology and media sectors shifting over the next decade? How will your solution adapt to and/or drive that changing environment?
Mobile technolgy is the future. We will need to adapt our Facebook presence to use a wider variety of mobile apps with requiring access to Facebook. I also believe that integration of the existing social media will happen and as such, all our facebook postings will be readily available on twitter or other platforms as they are developed and are integrated.
Failure is not always an option. If your solution fails to gain traction in the next two years, what other applications of the idea could you explore?
We are also exploring on ground presence using tradition door-to-door techniques. But in terms of technology, the alternative will be webtv and or the provision on mobile broadband access at the State level.
Expand on your selections, explaining how you will sustain funding
We hope to generate advertising revenue from community members as well as expanding our donation base. We will also raise fund from Trust and Foundations.
