Operating for less than a year
THE NEED: Describe the need for your solution and the size/dynamic of the community (ies) you will engage
After the events of Egypt 25th of Jan revolution, it has become normal to witness crime incidents on daily basis. Some were rumors and some were true. The people perception of their country has improved and it’s only through collective work that we are able to achieve the desired change. Our country still suffers from corruption that’s spreading likee cancer. We believe that if we worked together as we did in the revolution days we can change everything. The collaborative efforts and the accumulating change is the key. Everybody contributes to the bigger picture of change
Currently we are targeting people with mobile/Internet connections but soon enough we will enable the service for every average citizen.
THE SOLUTION: Please explain what your solution offers and how it is innovative. How will you put your solution into the hands of users or beneficiaries? Be specific!
We as a group of youth started this project to collect information form people in the streets. Our main focus is to provide a tool and an easy method for positive people to reports incidents that happens everywhere and these incidents are neglected all over the time. The aim of this initiative is to empower the average citizen through the usage of technology namely crowdsource reporting and interactive mapping.
The solution offers reporting crimes from any place in Egypt using PC or a mobile device, the user needs to enter a title, location on map, description of what happened, time, date and any other resources such as photos of videos which raises the credibility of the report.
On the other side users can view reported crimes, description and ranked on map view or list view to get enough information about how and when this crime happened.
Users can also specify a location to get alerts from such as their city or neighborhood. Recently we launched a blog in which we give people advices in how to protect themselves depending on data from analysed reports.
THE MODEL: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference through use of information technology and media
In a regular street, a lady is walking and suddenly a thief with a motorcycle took here bag and number of people are present on the same location. A man was able to see the criminal face features and another one was able to memorize this motorcycle number. A smart-phone holder was able to take his picture and maybe another one was able to film the whole accident. Each one holds a piece of information which is very important for the lady and for the police. The first person who saw the criminal face maybe late for work and can't give the lady the information he knows. The one who has the criminal picture maybe in a moving car and he will late post it on facebook to share with friends. Every witness will use the information he holds in not a proper way. If we were able to collect these pieces of information in one place, we will be able to create a useful information that will help us bringing the lady's bag and catch the thief. And this is what Zabatak aims at. We provide online and mobile service to collect information about crime and corruption from people and locate the information on Egypt Map.
With these information we can warn each other and locate crimes spots on the map.
Zabatak is not only asking people to report anything wrong they see but we want people to help fixing what annoys them too. They can propose solution and vote on it and we as Zabatak team take these solution and give it to people on charge to apply them.
THE MARKETPLACE: Who are your peers and competitors? What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
So far we have no competitors. Moreover, we are cooperating with any entity interested in fighting crime and corruption.
Social Impact
This Entry is about (Issues)
FOUNDING STORY: We want to hear about your “Aha!” moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution’s potential to change the world.
During the revolution, the police existence became virtually non-existent and people had to defend their own properties and also the public properties as well. And to make things even worse, Egypt suffered from high crime rate after the mass escape of prisoners during the 25 of jan Revolution so we decided to help people by assisting them in reporting crimes easily using new technologies such as mobile phones and Internet applications we established Zabatak website and developed mobile applications to allow reporting from any place. Zabatak is now working as a website to raise awareness against different forms of crimes and corruption, and to warn people from visiting suspicious places.
Specify both the depth and scale of your solution’s social impact to date
Our social impact and theory of change model are based on these assumptions:
We believe If people have more info about corruption and crime where they live or work, it will lead to better measurements for lessen exposure
We believe If people could report anything they see wrong and find something in return, they will feel safer and have better sense of security
We believe If people report everything wrong they see, it will be easier to generate transparent statistics and the governments wont be able to claim something that’s not happening or vice verse.
We provide a service for people to report anything wrong they see ranging from organized crimes, bribe to normal day-to-day issues like street and transportation problems.
Many people are using our services mostly for viewing reports near where they live or work. We only have 2 reported cases that the lost items where recovered using our website.
We are measuring our success with number of website visits, number of reports and Facebook likes. After 6 months of operation we achieved 60,000 visit, 600 reports and 5 likes.
What is your projected impact within the next 1-5 years? Is your idea replicable? If so, how?
The ideal way we think about this is that we shall be able to detect problems by people through their reports, monitor the resolution through analysis of the flow and actually trying to prevent it from happening again through cooperation and integration with government, NGOs, Media and Companies and through forming social pressure.
We believe that when people work together they can make a difference and that’s what we are trying to educate the people. Corrupted people will have less better chances to operate since everybody is watching. Drivers on streets will follow driving rules for fear that they might be caught on camera.
We believe that in 1-5 years we will be able to eliminate corruption and crime to a non-noticeable level and replicate our idea in neighbour couturiers

What barriers have hindered the success of your project to date? How do you plan to overcome these and other challenges as you grow your solution?
We are a group of youth with limited financial resources and experience. However some individuals and NGOs believes in our cause and supporting us to drive the change.
How do you see the information-technology and media sectors shifting over the next decade? How will your solution adapt to and/or drive that changing environment?
While the previous regime has put massive restrictions upon information, we embody the value of democratization of information; the right of people to know what’s happening, when and where. Zabatak is motivated by the same concept; provide people with the right tools and they will make the change.
Also, Social media is changing the way we work and communicate and as of 25th of Jan revolution. Some call it Facebook revolution but we prefer IT revolution because IT enable people to cross the barriers that the governments draw around themselves.
Failure is not always an option. If your solution fails to gain traction in the next two years, what other applications of the idea could you explore?
what other applications of the idea could you explore? :
Our main idea it to fight crime and corruption by providing a channel from people-to-people and people-to-government. It we failed to make the government cooperate, we will stick with people-to-people and maybe people-to-NOGs to fix people needs.
Expand on your selections, explaining how you will sustain funding
We will use many business models to sustain our project:
-Google Ads model
-Subscription model for people interested in specific information, and people who want information on the go.
-Selling statistical data to media while maintaining user privacy
