Clear Health Costs is an online platform that aims to bring transparency to the health care market. The way it does this is to engage people to post how much they are paying for a given health procedure and to supplement this crowdsourced data with reporting and fact checking from professional researchers and journalists. The result: people have information that allows them to make much better informed decisions about their health care. Currently focused on New York the project is in beta form. It aims to go nationwide.

Healthcare costs are one of the most opaque and therefore frustrating subjects in the US. The consumer is often operating in the dark in terms of making decisions on where to go for a given procedure. This is particularly the case for people with more basic insurance who have to pay out of pocket for non emergency care or pharmaceuticals like birth control. This site gives ordinary citizens a venue to find out who charges what from an independent reliable source. It enables them to share information and questions about health costs. It empowers them to make decisions which hitherto they may have felt helpless to make. Clear Health Cost is exactly what crowdsourcing should be about: greater transparency for the public good.
