Grassroots comics – an inexpensive and low-tech tool - are visual storytelling with entirely local content. World Comics India (WCI) in co-operation with World Comics Finland is promoting the use of Grassroots Comics. Local people are taught in workshops, throughout India, the basics of making comics wallposters themselves and tell in these comics about issues which are important to them. This visual storytelling with a local story, characters, language and idioms represents a genuine voice of the grassroots.
Reason:
The idea is innovative, as it uses ordinary people’s stories to create local debate. Most people like to read comics, and the strips give information which is usually not available in mainstream press. The idea is important as it brings local debate to a wider audience.(www.worldcomicsindia.com)
