Innovation
What makes your idea unique and innovative?
Coastal Libraries is a completely new approach,to promote the importance of coastal regions coastal libraries will play a major role.
The idea is to integrate activities in high priority ecosystems to:
-Identify the most important natural resource problems and solutions
- Influence the planning and decision-making processes of other agencies and organizations with the Service's living resource capabilities
-Implement solutions on-the-ground in partnership with others and
-Instill a stewardship ethic, and catalyze the public to help solve problems, change behaviors, and promote ecologically sound decisions.
The following steps can be taken for the betterment of coastal regions:
-Promote slogans/quotations in local as well as in English which will help the local people/tourists to understand the importance of coastal areas.
-Promote tourists to use biodegradable products in coastal areas
-Educate people and promote local handicrafts in the international market, teach the local people about sustainable development which will allow them to become self dependent.
-Promote people to volunteer for the conservation of coastal regions during holidays.
-Allow free use of computers for attaining information from various resources.
-Use of solar cells/tidal energy which can help in conservation of power in coastal regions and which will reduce pollution in coastal regions.
"The idea is very simple but highly effective"
Do you have a patent for this idea?
No
Impact
This Entry is about (Issues)
What impact have you had on your clients and the tourism sector?
The idea will guide the people to preserve their natural heritage.Coastal areas provide fish and wildlife habitat, far beyond their limited geographic extent.Specifically,it contains much higher percentage of the Nation's threatened and endangered species fishery resources, migratory songbirds, and migrating and wintering waterfowl. Our goal is to teach the people the importance of this biodiversity which will stop the people from exploiting these resources.
Problem
Deforestation was one of the major cause of causing damage to the coastal regions,as wood was the primary source of energy for the various developmental activities.Mangrove trees avoid soil erosion, and thus if becomes necessary to conserve such trees to prevent the coastal areas from sinking which leads to a damage in the biodiversity of the coastal areas.
Since the great majority of the Nation's coastal areas are in private hands, conservation of these ecologically important habitats is vital to protecting coastal natural resources.
Actions
The key is to find solutions that ensure self-sustaining natural systems despite conflicting demands on our natural resources.
Results
The Coastal Libraries provides incentives for voluntary protection of threatened, endangered and other species on private and public lands alike. The program's protection and restoration successes to date give hope that, through the cooperative efforts of many public and private partners, adequate coastal habitat for fish and wildlife will exist for future generations.
What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.
National governments have a key role to play in sustainable coastal management. These functions can include monitoring, awareness and training of officials and communities, in addition to the legislating
and regulating various aspects.A policy model based on a mix of command-and control and market based mechanisms can be recommended
this must include:
• Involvement of the community
• Public awareness raising
• Human and institutional capacity development
• Monitoring and assessment
What would prevent your project from being a success?
-Regional Problems:
Many of the problems affecting coastal areas in different countries throughout the region are interrelated. There might be some regional problems which may stop us from making this a success.
-Inadequate Funds:
Due to inadequate funds it might take a longer time .
How many people will your project serve annually?
Fewer than 100
What is the average monthly household income in your target community, in US Dollars?
Less than $50
Does your project seek to have an impact on public policy or introduce models and tools that benefit the tourism sector in general?
Yes
Sustainability
What stage is your project in?

How long has this organization been operating?
1‐5 years
Does your organization have a Board of Directors or an Advisory Board?
Yes
Does your organization have any non-monetary partnerships with NGOs?
No
Does your organization have any non-monetary partnerships with businesses?
No
Does your organization have any non-monetary partnerships with government?
No
Please tell us more about how these partnerships are critical to the success of your innovation.
What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?
The three most important actions needed to grow our initiative are:
(1)-Community Based coastal Management-
It is important for community organization to underline the willingness of communities to work together when they can see the direct benefits in
improvements to their livelihoods. In more developed areas, working with the
community has to include local industries. To obtain information about potential pollution risks, governments will need to offer incentives for
information disclosure (taxes, threats by government, prizes, public recognition, increased sales).
(2)-Awareness Raising-
We have to work to contribute to public awareness raising concerning the importance and vulnerability of the coastal environment. This is an essential prelude to the policy and behavioral changes that are required for improved coastal conservation.
For the general public it is essential to increase:
• the recognition that coastal resources are limited and important
• the realization that the condition of coastal resources is under threat
• the understanding that people’s livelihoods are directly and indirectly affected.
• support for the existing laws and programs to protect coastal resources
For local communities, who utilize coastal resources
directly, it is essential to:
• inform about the actual consequences of over exploitation of coastal resources
• provide information about how the destructive fishing practices threaten coastal resources, but also give information about alternatives or ways
to overcome those practices
• offer techniques and technologies for ecologically sound practices of coastal resources utilization
• deepen the understanding that the degradation of coastal resources affects people’s livelihoods through employment, income, and food supply
• enhance the recognition that coastal communities have an important role in sustainable coastal resources management through introducing examples of how communities can be successful for community-based coastal management
• provide information about law enforcement for the protection of coastal resources
(3)-Monitoring and assessment-
If governments are to take on a new role as information managers, strategies for the monitoring and assessment of coastal areas should be a major priority.
This will lend essential support to coastal management programs.
The Story
What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?
India is covered 3/4th by coastal areas and in my entire lifetime I have been to many coastal regions. Most of the coastal regions in India is polluted due to lack of awareness among the people.I am keen in improving this condition with the help of education and sustainable development thus making people self dependent.Building coastal libraries can play a huge role in this.
