Description of Initiative
The initiative started after a young girl tested HIV positive at WAMATA clinic in Tanzania. This young girl was raped by a lowyer unknowingly of the health status of this girl.Together with the radio presenter of NJIA PANDA programme of Radio Clouds fm in Tanzania we started the initiative of finding women who have suffered from indoor rape so that after interviewing them live on Every Sunday we will be showing the community what women and young girls are passing through. At the end of the radio programme the community members are allowed to call the radio station and give their views, ideas, comments and sometime material and financial support to the victim of indoor rape.
Innovation
Our approach of ending indoor rape differs from other approaches in the way we involve the community directly by allowing them to call the studio .We have been using HIV infected patients as a result of rape who are being serviced by WAMATA ORGANISATION.There are two things here the rapist may get HIV from a victim of rape or the rapist might infect the victim. So by doing interviews especially with women who were HIV positive before they were raped and yet they did infect the rapist, the community do discover the effect of rape.In the future we are planning to establish a full support programme for Rape victims involving psychosocial and financial support for education and small business projects and /or according to the needs of the victims.
Delivery Model
We use a radio programme called Njia Panda and a Newspaper called Familia where after conducting the interview with a victim of rape and allow people to call the studio and talk with the victim or giving their comments and support. The story is then published in the Familia Newspaper.
MEASURE OF IMPACT
We have two methods of measuring the impact of the programme
1)More victims are coming to the Radio station more than the number we expected. This means there is community awareness of the problem and many victims wants to share their stories with people so that the effects of rape can be seen
2)THE NUMBER OF CALLERS-This have increased since the programme started,we receive many calls during and after the on air programme.People are offering financial support, psycosocial support and even lawyers are able to offer their support to the victims. For us this shows that our programme have impact on the community.
Key Operational Partnerships
Our partners are Radio Clouds fm,WAMATA organisation,Business firms like Pepsi and mobile phone service providers.
Impact
Financial Model
There are several sponsors of the on air radio programmes and people do call the studio using their own money.
What percentage, if any, of the total operating costs does earned income (from products, services, or other fees) represent?
500
How is the initiative financed? Is it financially self-sustainable or profitable? How much do beneficiaries contribute?
The initiative is sponsored by several companies like Pepsi,Vodacomm etc which sponsors a one hour radio programme.Other costs are covered by individual contributions, friends and community members who are attracted by our initiative.
Effectiveness
After about 10 radio sessions we have succeded in making more victims to come to the Radio station more than the number we expected. This means there is community awareness of the problem and many victims wants to share their stories with people so that the effects of rape can be seen.THE NUMBER OF CALLERS-This have increased since the programme started,we receive many calls during and after the on air programme.People are offering financial support, psycosocial support and even lawyers are able to offer their support
How many people have benefited from your program over the last year? Which element of the program proved itself most effective?
About 10 victims of indoor rape
Scaling up Strategy
Since we have just started the initiative we do think that we will be able to get more on -air radio time as one hour seem to be not enough. We expect to form a linkage with lawyers associations to help the victims in their case and we will continue collaborating with WAMATA organisations to offer financial, social and nutrition support to the victims

Sustainability
How did you hear about this contest and what is your main incentive to participate?

Main Obstacles to Scaling Up
1)Inadequate financial support for on air radio programme
2) Social stigma to the victim of which led us not to use the true names of the victims during on air radio sessions
Main Financial Challenges
1)There is no enough financial support to get more air time that the programme is only conducted on sunday for one hour,we would like to get more funds fornot only radio air time but also TV shows and pamphlets
2) Financial support to the victims who are mostly HIV + VE and in need of social ,nutritional and basic need support is inadequate
-About USD 36,000 is needed per year for running a single radio session ( about >500 USD PER WEEEK)
Main Partnership Challenges
The partners support is not readily available when it is intensely needed.
