Name Your Project
Trama Project – Different organizations consortium to confront the Human Traffic.
Describe Your Idea
To fight human beings trafficking through series of actions to be planned & implemented by a partnership between 4 organizations that are already working with connected themes, enriching the connections, contacts & existing knowledge about the issue.
Innovation
What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence?
To fight human beings trafficking through series of actions to be planned & implemented by a partnership between 4 organizations that are already working with connected themes, enriching the connections, contacts & existing knowledge about the issue.
Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field?
Considering human being trafficking as a complex and multidimensional issue that involves different questions and problems, it must be fought in an articulated way. Projeto Trama is, in that sense, an innovation in organization structure in itself. Projeto Trama is composed of a partnership between 4 organizations - The Projeto Legal Human Rights Organization (PROJETO LEGAL), The Brazilian Institute for Innovations in Social Health (IBISS), CRIOLA and The University of Greater Rio [de Janeiro] (UNIGRANRIO) – all of them located in Rio de Janeiro and with recognized action in human rights area. Through the actions of each one of these 4 intitutions, Projeto Trama integrates with several groups that are vulnerable to human trafficking (like black women and prostitutes, among others), several networks, councils and movements, mainly on child and teenager issues, access to justice, community development, and issues relevant for women, blacks, health and prostitutes.
Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing?
The Technical and Institutional Cooperation Term signed between the 4 organizations – PROJETO LEGAL, IBISS, CRIOLA and UNIGRANRIO – considers the articulation and 10-year partnership for defense and promotion of human rights in their comprehensive aspect. Projeto Trama acts through a multidisciplinary team with 1-2 representatives from each organization, following the general directions settled by the Management Council of the project. Using this methodology, the project acts in an ample way on fighting human beings trafficking – raising awareness and informing society and vulnerable groups, forming people directly involved in fighting human trafficking or related issues, social and juridical assistance to people subject to human trafficking, network articulation and social controlling of public policies on the issue
How do you plan to grow your innovation?
Aiming to mobilize communities and groups to raise awareness about human beings trafficking, Projeto Trama intends to develop a video (documentary / drama) about the issue, focusing the problem’s specific aspects in Brazil, bringing in the testimony of experts, victims and also parts of Brazilian soap operas (already ceded by TV Globo) dealing with the issue. There are some important foreign movies (Lylia 4-Ever, Inhuman Traffic), as well as a Brazilian feature film (Sun Angels – about child trafficking). However, there is no audio-visual material developed to actions and workshops for raising awareness about human trafficking that contemplates all of the different Brazilian perspectives (internal and international trafficking of men, women and children, for different reasons) and regional peculiarities of the country.
Do you have any existing partnerships, and if so, how do you create them?
Besides being a partnership of 4 organizations (a network in itself), Projeto Trama is a very active member of Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women (GAATW), being a former coordination member of the Latin-American Network Againsta Traffic in People (REDLAC-GAATW), a member of GAATW-BRASIL and participating in the Work Group on Sexual Exploitation of Children and Teenagers from National Association of the Defense Centers (ANCED) and the State Forum for Fighting Sexual Violence. The Justice Ministry, UNODC and, to some extent, the Special Department for Women Policies (SEPM) count on Projeto Trama’s contributions for qualifying their actions on fighting human beings trafficking.
Impact
Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact.
Aiming to raise awareness and contribute to the formation and information of viewers, the proposed video will show different sides and aspects of human beings trafficking in Brasil, approaching it to reality, as means of prevention and fighting the problem.

How many people have you served or plan to serve?
During its 3 years of existence, Projeto Trama tried to set actions at local and national level to increase the fighting of human beings trafficking, always acting in the human rights perspective. That way, TRAMA has been acting on: 1) Actions of internal formation – for the components of Projeto Trama, partners of GAATW Brasil and REDLAC, relevant governmental and non-governmental organizations that directly or indirectly work with vulnerable groups; 2) Prevention Actions, including information campaigns, technical and education formations, as well as prevention actions to target publics – like prostitutes from Copacabana Beach and Barra da Tijuca; 3) Articulation with different segments of civil society (local, national, regional and international), among others; 4) Encouragement to study, research and analysis of the reality; 5) Assistance to traffic victims; 6) Actions for institutional strengthening (management) for effective work inside partnerships.
Until today, Projeto Trama has provided juridical and social assistance to 20-25 people, helped about 3,000 prostitutes, as well as raised awareness and provided formation to approximately 2,500 people in workshops, lectures and courses, besides local and national campaigns in radios, newspapers and television networks.

Please list any other measures of the impact of your innovation?
- Encouragement of the formation of GAATW-Brasil and REDLAC networks;
- Translation of the International Manual about Human Beings Traffic and Human Rights
- Elaboration of innovative campaign materials – these were even copied by other organizations, like the International Labour Organization (ILO).
- Participation – by invitation from governmental organizations – in consulting services, lectures, forums and national and international congresses (i.e. UN.GIFT Forum, Vienna, Austria, 2008).
- Transnational juridical assistance in a case of child pornography – involving the promise of working in foreign countries – with female Brazilian teenagers.
Is there a policy intervention element to your innovation?
The purpose of Projeto Trama’s actions is to propose and control local, national and international public policies to fight human beings traffic, including guaranteeing integrated protection and assistance to victims of this crime. Two representatives of Projeto Trama have been personally invited to participate as consultants in the Inter-ministerial Work Group to elaborate the National Plan for Fighting Human Beings Traffic. Nowadays, they have been working in the international and regional (Latin America and the Caribbean) perspective of the access to justice by victims of human traffic.
Exactly who are the beneficiaries of your innovation?
Projeto Trama aims to benefit people who are vulnerable to human traffic (children, teenagers, women, transgender, prostitutes, students, immigrants, etc.), victims of human traffic and professionals who work with vulnerable people (service providers, people responsible for identification or assistance to victims).

Sustainability
How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)?
In the first three years of the project, Projeto Trama has obtained the financial support of organizations like Mama Cash, Global Fund for Women, CMC-PSO and Cordaid. Nowadays, Projeto Trama is still supported by two Dutch foundations (Cordaid and CMC-PSO) to implement some activities until 2010. However, Projeto Trama is now searching for funding for its more recent innovation on information, formation and awareness area: the elaboration of its prevention video.
If known, provide information on your finances and organization
* Annual budget: approximately R$300,000.
* Revenue generated in last year (donations, service revenues, etc.):Approximately R$5,000
Team;
Today, Projeto Trama’s team is composed by:
2 articulators (full-time)
1 lawyer (30 hours/week)
1 journalist (20 hours/week)
1 communication intern (20 hours/week)
2 social educators (15 hours/week each)
To realize research in the beginning of the yearm we hired 1 researcher and 1 intern during 3 months.
What is the potential demand for your innovation?
Because it is an innovative video that has never been produce in Brazil before, there is a great interest and possible demand for: other states; partner organizations in other Brazilian regions; formation of professional in different areas; raising awareness of general public (in airports, harbors and bus stations). Considering the recent National Plan for Fighting Human Traffic and the National Pact for Fighting Violence Against Women, which encourages the development of governmental and non-governmental initiatives, as well as the involvement of universities, assistance networks and so on, the video is also an excellent tool.
What are the main barriers to financial sustainability?
Projeto Trama is an initiative sustained by the structure and experience of the 4 mother organizations. In that way, we expect that its actions will continue to exist, considering the multiplication of knowledge inside the partnership and in other networks. However, a significant barrier is the lack of human resources properly trained and able to provide assistance in real cases
The Story
What is the origin of this innovation? Tell us your story.
The four organizations that form Projeto Trama have been acting for more than 10 years in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in promotion and defense of human rights. In 2001 the four organizations were invited to participate in the National Research on the Traffic of Children, Women and Teenagers for Commercial Sexual Exploitation (PESTRAF). IBISS has coordinated the initiative and UNIGRANRIO executed the research inside the state of Rio de Janeiro, while PROJETO LEGAL and CRIOLA acted as data suppliers. When PESTRAF was concluded, tha four organizations perceived the need and importance of developing a concrete project on that issue, including the peculiarities, experience and knowledge of the four involved organizations. That was how Projeto Trama was born.
