I am a post graduate student at the Northampton Business School, The University of Northampton pursuing MA MARKETING with special interest in tourism destination marketing and entrepreneurship, I feel honoured to contribute my comments regarding this company after reading their entry. Tanzania being one of the poorest countries in the world but the richest in terms of natural resources and wildlife, ZARA seem to stand tall being one of the sustainable developers via tourism. As far as the academic and practician world is concerned in the tourism industry, the idea of sustainable development is only about 20 years old now, therefore the concept itself is still in its maturity stage and we are still learning about it. ZARA seem to have surpassed the academic and practician world as they have started their sustainable tourism development since 1988, this shows how they are committed and way ahead most of the corporate organization especially in the less developed country like Tanzania. ZARA seem to have adopted the report of the World Commission on Environment and Development which was first published in 1987, if not then this is a proof enough to show that they are ahead of the game as they have been involved in ecological and envionmental conservation, they have been involved in the intra-generational of equity, poverty alleviation and social injustice through tourism by employing a huge number of employees, support community based developments projects, supporting NGOs which are directly related to the industry, supporting orphanage centers etc.

Being a student, an academia and a practicioner in the tourism industry I feel honoured to support and ask every one to applaud ZARA especially being led by a woman entrepreneur in the male dominated industry, seriuosly madam Zainab deserves and her ZARA Tanzania ADVENTURES. Tourism Sustainable Development seem to be her guiding philosophy. Thank you.

My fiancee and I visited East Africa in 2001 and spent over two months backpacking through the region. We hired several companies to take us on safaris and through regions/excursions that required us to have a guide/escort. We booked our Mt. Kilimanjaro tour with Zara Tours prior to leaving the US. Out of all the different tour companies we came across throughout our trip, we were most impressed with Zara Tours. To begin with, every single person that worked for the company (drivers, porters, suppliers, guides, cooks, etc) was from Tanzania. This was not the case with any other tour company we hired. Most impressive was the fact that every one of the employees was highly knowledgeable about the environment and how to protect it. Because of their ability to explain the circumstances of the local people and what was happening to the environment, we became more responsible tourists. We had wonderful conversations with every single employee we met.

I now run a micro-enterprise training program for minorities and women from underserved communities in New York City. My experience with Zara Tours had a direct impact on why I chose to go into a field that empowers communities and creates long-term sustainable change. Zara Tours deserves any type of support available to ensure they are able to continue to provide jobs to the local community and knowledge to the tourists.

Being a person who trekked up Mt. Kilimanjaro with Zara's dedicated and socio-ecologically minded staff, I have seen first hand Zara's ability to create sustainable employment for the local workforce. Zara's staff is not only incredibly kind and knowledgable, but they also exhibited an honest pride and reverance for this global wonder. It is with great pleasure and appreciation that I support Zara Tanzania Adventure. I hope to share another profoundly amazing experience with Zara Adventure tours in the future.

Zara’s project is worth of consideration considering the contribution and impact the company has on the neighboring communities. I have known the company since 1998 in its support for elementary education in the community, day care centers, and youth community centers that are involved with HIV/AIDS prevention.

I have worked with the company since 1998. I direct several study abroad programs in Tanzania for college students. Part of the program includes community service. We have worked with Zara in these communities where my students volunteer for 5 to 21 days. The students engage in teaching life skills, language, and social skills. The students benefit from learning about Tanzania communities, they enhance their perspectives about the world and develop a better understanding of the world at these critical times. This is a timely and worthwhile project.

Zainab Ansell is a mentor, teacher and an overall example of a business giving back.

Zara gives back in the forms of education (teaching employees language, cooking, etc.), environment (clean up, education, proper care for mountain trips), growth (the successful woman owned and operated business continues to reinvest earnings to grow, building new resorts and trips elevating Tanzania as a destination), charity work (Zainab started several charities and supports many more with time, money, speaking engagements, elevating the Tanzania areas of need.

Zara is an amazing company built around giving back! They should win this award and be set as an example for all to see and learn from!
