Describe Your Idea
The Lusaka Youth Cup is an initiative of Breakthrough Sports Academy aimed to develop youth football at grassroots level as well as use sport to contribute to the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals specifically focusing on environmental protection.
Innovation
Describe your program or new idea in one sentence.
The Lusaka Youth Cup is an initiative of Breakthrough Sports Academy aimed to develop youth football at grassroots level as well as use sport to contribute to the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals specifically focusing on environmental protection.
What makes your initiative uniquely positioned to create change in your community?
Breakthrough Sports Academy is an implementing partner of the Football for Hope movement. The Football for Hope Movement is the key element of the strategic alliance between FIFA www.fifa.com and streetfootballworld www.streetfootballworld.org. The movement aims to utilise the role of football in society in order to contribute to the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals.
Breakthrough Sports academy would like to contribute to the development of youth football in Zambia at grassroots level. It is behind this background that Breakthrough Sports Academy (BSA) has initiated the Lusaka Youth Cup Tournament. The Lusaka Youth Cup tournament is scheduled to take place from the 21st – 27th April, 2008 in Lusaka. The Lusaka Youth Cup tournament will be to bring together football teams and academies from around Zambia. The Lusaka Youth Cup Tournament will not only focus on football but will aim to empower participants’ life skills through the planned activities that will be conducted during the week long event. The initial week long tournament will aim to bring together 50 youth teams with over 1000 participants from around Zambia.
Describe how you organize and carry out your work?
From the 21st to the 27th April 2008, BSA plans to organize the first Lusaka Youth Cup tournament. The tournament will involve young men and women who will play in a week long football tournament. The youth football tournament will aim to involve over 50 teams with over 1000 participants. A program has been developed for the week which the participant will be able to follow for the duration of the event. One highlight of the program is that the participants will be involved in community service. The community service will aim to involve the participant in community cleaning. Specific sites will be selected where the participant will go and clean.
The tournament is also viewed as an opportunity to network with all the teams who will participate. It will bring young men and coaches from different parts of the country and this will create a platform were we can share ideas and learn from one another.
What is your plan to scale and expand your innovation into your community and beyond?
The first part for Breakthrough Sports academy will be to launch the Lusaka Youth Cup tournament in April 2008. This will mark the beginning of a long term initiative were youth men can showcase their talents and abilities while at the same time learning. The initial plan for the innovation’s growth will be organize the Lusaka Youth Cup tournament on an annual as of April 2008. BSA will also further explore potential supporters and create partnerships both locally and internationally. On the long term, BSA is considering inviting teams from countries such as Zimbabwe, Botswana Namibia and South Africa. We have friends, partners and contacts in the aforementioned countries and we will continue to explore the possibility. The support will be both in kind, material and financial.
In October 2007, BSA launched the Zambia Street Football Network (ZSFN)
he idea behind the consolidation of the Zambia Street Football Network (ZSFN) was because organizations working in the field of social development through football had been working in isolation. There was on form of networking to address the daily challenges faced by young boys and girls.
Furthermore, this is the first time that a network has been form for organizations implementing sports programs at grassroots level. The ZSFN is a project supported in the framework of the Football for Hope movement. The Football for Hope Movement is the key element of the strategic alliance between FIFA and streetfootballworld, created to enhance dialogue and collaboration between football associations, committed clubs and players, professional leagues and involved commercial partners as well as organisations advancing social development at local level. The movement aims to utilise the role of football in society in order to contribute to the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals.
The movement is led by FIFA in its capacity as world football’s governing body and streetfootballworld as the driving force behind a global network of organisations that use the potential of football to promote and facilitate social development
As part of the growth of the innovation, BSA will explore possibilities of incorporating some the organization and academies who will participate in the Lusaka Youth Cup into the Zambia Street Football Network.
What other resources, institutional, or policy needs would be necessary to help sustain and scale up your idea?
It is important that young men participate in sport and physical activity. They develop not only as individuals but they learn to play in a team; build friendship and learn to follow instructions and rules. “Opportunities to participate in sport and physical activities are a basic human right for all people (UNSECO 1993), including groups that are typically under served. For children living in poor communities positively oriented sports activities can foster feelings of hope, self confidence and self esteem. Sports and physical activity offer an effective way to deliver health education.” Based on this background, Breakthrough Sports Academy developed the initiative of the Lusaka Youth Cup tournament. BSA has been in existence since 2003 and has provided after school sports opportunities to over 1000 children. Through out this existence, BSA has developed and gained valuable experience when it comes to development of youth sport at grassroots level. The initiative of the Lusaka Youth Cup tournament is aimed at utilizing the power of football to give hope to the young men in Zambia. The idea behind the Lusaka Youth Cup is to bring Young men and women who will participate in a week long youth football soccer tournament. Furthermore, besides football the Young men and women will be involved in community service. The community service will involve the participant of the Lusaka Youth Cup tournament going into the communities and cleaning selected sites. The objective of the community service will be sensitizing the participants about the importance of protecting the environment as well as being responsible for the environment. We hope that some of the participants will take this back in the communities were they are coming from. We would like to instill a permanent sense of responsibility in them about their environment. Sport and specifically football will be used as a platform for this program to be implemented.
Find attached the program of the Lusaka Youth Cup tournament. The tournament will target The challenges faced by young men in Africa and Zambia to be precise are vast. Hence there is need to have a holistic approach in dealing with young men. We believe that by initiatives like the Lusaka Youth Cup tournament, BSA will be able to empower young men with both sports and life skills which they will eventually use in their daily lives.
Impact
Describe your impact in one sentence, commenting on both the individual and community levels.
Community mobilization, environmental protection and education through sport
What impact has your work achieved to date?
Currently BSA has sent out invitation letter to potential teams who will participate in the Lusaka Youth Cup. By 31st March we will have a sure number of teams who will participate in the football tournament. In our five years of existence as BSA we have participated in international youth tournaments in Norway; Sweden and the U.S. Unfortunately not so many young men get the opportunity to participate in these international youth tournament. The teams are usually limited to about 20 people. It therefore mean that out of about 200 boys who would like to play football only 20 get the opportunity to participate in international events.
The alternative will be to organize more local events that will be similar to the tournaments that are played internationally. The idea is to think globally but act local. The more attractive we make the local events the more the young men will develop appreciation and act locally. The tournament will also focus on environmental protection. The participants will be involved in a half day community service. The participants will be required to clean selected sites. As BSA we want to teach them on the importance of protecting our environment. The principle we want to teach them is that if “I cant contribute to cleaning my environment then who will”.
