Hi Jack, your entry really resonates with me. I am also engaged in working with youth using media. Have you come across Participatory video? Ive currently got a competition entry in the sports for a better world competition. You are spot on with the tools you are using this is such a powerful way to engage young men, they learn so much from working together as a team, helping each other and creating something great together. Good luck with this entry and please let me know what you think of our idea: Youth Video: fuel to power a sport for change movement: http://www.changemakers.net/en-us/node/2811
All the best
Chris
Finding you Way is not only a great title for a youth development initiative, but also a very innovative concept and program model - great work Jack! I have come across some youth-based projects that somewhat fail to engage their beneficiaries in part due to the medium that's employed. As FYW uses music as the primary vehicle to appeal to youth and allows for them to develop skills that can be easily transferable beyond the music industry, I assume that this learning and development sojourn that the participants embark upon probably results in a fun, interactive and educational process.
When you mentioned how some of the youth from your program went on to participating at the UN's Youth Assembly, i was reminded of many of the youth that I have worked with who have often surprised me by not only rising to the occasion but by exceeding expectations. This just reinforces the notion that we as collective societies must do the same, by affording youth the opportunity to learn, grow and access resources in a milieu that is accessible and attractive to them.
