As a "DJ" myself, I have always thought programs like this can have a huge impact, being able to mix records and play shows was a huge motivational builder for me and can see how it can be a great tool in challenging many energies into a postive one. A couple thoughts:
You should not just limit it to one genre of music, especially if its a DJ thing. House music has always been another music that spoke out against injustices, social change, and love of all things. Adding funk and jazz djs also can appeal and help foster a different appreciation for many more forms of music than just one broad term. Techno was created in Detroit and appealed to many kids of color in the communities during hard times as well.
I understand it is easier to package the program with one form, but adding other creative DJ elements might appeal to outside funding sources since it shows more innovation.
Just some thoughts. I appreciate organizations and people like you and your members that are dong what they can for the next generation. Good luck!
Hello Abeo,
I love music and I love the idea of using music as a tool to engage youth. It looks like Raising Expectations is reaching a lot of people! You mention a lot of potential partners and allies - What are you doing to create those partnerships? Also, I'd like to hear an anecdote, a story or a quote about someone's experience having gone through the program. Could you share one with us?
Keep up the great work.
