Describe your program or new idea in one sentence.

Rescuing the Nigerian street youths, Ghetto youths, and destitute from gangsterism, drug addiction, crime/violence involvement , through Education, Skills acquisition, and psycho-social support.

What makes your initiative uniquely positioned to create change in your community?

The unique nature of this initiative is that we incorporate local traditions and values in our strategies. We do not give handouts, nor do we impose a new way of life, we empower. We engage the young people and disenfranchise them; we enable them to become true participants and not spectators. We start with what they no, and then build on it.

Describe how you organize and carry out your work?

The program begins with the selection of young men vulnerable to gangsterism, drug addiction, violence and educational negligence. In that respect we go through community based organizations, Quranic school teachers and in some occasions ghetto leaders. Being closer to these groups they identify the risk group, refer and/or link them up with us. A training schedules are made, which include series of sensitizations and mind building, skills acquisitions. These trainings are usually residential for a period of three months, with psychological support.
Right from the beginning of the training, community support, as regards to micro-credit and/or technical equipments relevant to their field of learning. During the training, the prospective grandaunts are thought to be innovative and creative. We therefore emphasized on their initiatives and build on it. What is your plan to scale and expand your innovation into your community and beyond?

Our plan to scale and expand innovation includes the forming alumni forum that may help in future sustenance. The beneficiaries may help in fund raising and support mobilization leading to sustainability. Community ownership for the program is encouraged through community based organization and faith based organization.
In addition revenue generation activities may be achieved during the training, which may help in sustaining the centers.
With strong partnerships and collaborations we equally anticipated more support, from private and public sectors.

What other resources, institutional, or policy needs would be necessary to help sustain and scale up your idea?

Other resources includes technical equipments, capacity buildings, I.E.C materials, acquisition of training hall, and means of transport for that purpose rather than rental or on hire services.

Number of individuals served

to date the initiative has been able to serve directly 212 young people in three communities of northern Nigeria. An estimated 350 families indirectly benefited so far.

Community impact

In those communities a marked decrease in joblessness by 45% has been achieved. Street begging extremely dropped, and most Quranic school pupils became self reliant and hope is being restored, regarding the vicious cycle of thuggery, gangsterism, crimes, and poverty among people of these communities.

Society at large

Since the initiation targeted some high risk communities in Kano state of northern Nigeria, there is high expectancy that that any slight improvement will ultimately be felt to the larger society.

What measure do you use to gauge your impact and why?

Number of people trained in a given period of time and of course the number of those able to put what they have learnt into practice. Series of follow up activities follows immediately after training. This includes visits to places where young people establish their new businesses. E.g tailoring, knitting places. The number of youth roaming in the street for begging or thuggery may also be a useful tool in impact measurement. Reduction of crimes and related vices may also be used. This is because the more the young people explore their value, the less the social vices in the community.
