Howard, Nice concept, however, please think about a name change.

I find the phrase "non-profit" to be dysfunctional in several ways. First, it says nothing about what the organization does, only what it does not do, i.e. make a profit. Second, it implies that, since there is no "profit" it always has its hand out for gifts. Neither is a good way to present an organization.

I like the phrase "social benefit organization" (SBO). This is a positive statement and it features the "benefit" that the organization is providing. One can have a profitable SBO, such as the organization Meetup. You may also be profit-oriented SBO. More often one will find SBO's that are dependent upon ongoing "investments" from foundations, businesses and individuals to keep their benefits flowing. In both cases they need a positive, affirmative name rather than a negative one.

Let's drop the "non-profit" phrase altogether.

Hi,

Thanks for the input. I completely agree -- NKN is in need of a name change. Nonprofit Knowledge Network doesn't say nearly enough about what we do. We actually have our eyes open for a name change and we're hoping to have one soon so that we can use it for our upcoming soft launch.

One idea is Giving Tool, or GivingTools.com. What do you think of this name? Any other suggestions? Please pass them along!
