Kara: This is a very intriguing, well-conceived idea. To play devil's advocate, let me suggest that a week of training for your participants is both too much and too little. Too much, because it's expensive to train in person and, so, difficult to scale quickly. (Is there some web-based training that can get people to the same place?) And too little, because, really, how much can you teach in a week? Enough to imagine that your participants will produce content that's salable to local and international media?

I don't know--it's a question I've been pondering lately. The ever-increasing opportunity for anyone to create content certainly suggests enormous potential. But how do we get them to a place where the content they create is actually accurate, fair, and of high quality?

Thanks,
Keith Hammonds

I accidently posted this as a separate comment and not as a reply. See the above answer.

Thanks for your comment Keith, it's much appreciated. The concept of doing two training boot camps is the ages old training of trainers grassroots concept. When we put out a call for participants we will make sure to have a diverse group of people who are already mobilizing or serve as community hubs with the ultimate goal that they will also create their own training boot camps and educate others – slowly taking ownership of the Web site, the trainings and the tools. Partnerships will also need to be created with educational institutions and NGOs to provide a space and further support. Because I have been raised between the US and Guatemala I would go back 2-3 times a year on my own dime, check in with those folks and do follow-up trainings, provide support and mentors from here.

Thanks for your comment Keith, it's much appreciated. Some quick comments and not necessarily complete: The concept of doing two training boot camps is the well-known good ol' training of trainers grassroots concept. Yep, we love the traditional models with a modern touch. When we put out a call for participants we will make sure to have a diverse group of people who are already mobilizing or serve as community hubs with the ultimate goal that they will also create their own training boot camps and educate others. That will ultimately mean them slowly taking ownership of the Web site, the trainings and the tools. Pretty sweet right?

Of course, partnerships will also be needed to be created with educational institutions and NGOs to provide a space and further support. All of these connections we already have why we are very confident, we will be able to grow these relationships into something amazing. :-) A few initial thoughts even though the complete answer will have more angles.
