Hi,

I´m having difficulties to see what it is your´re doing exactly. You bring together various organizations in Brazil to organize events that deal with the prevention of crack abuse, raise awareness etc. Those events feature sports activities and hiphop, among other things. Right? Sounds pretty cool, but can you tell us more about what role sport plays in you concept? Are you using sporty elements of hiphop culture, like breakdancing? Get famous athletes/musicians involved who take a stand against drugs?

What I actually do is use the mobilizing power of Hip Hop together with the youth from the communities and the institutional strength of MH2O of Brazil to unite the community, the public sector and companies to work together in combating the use of drugs and violence in communities; involving all of the social stakeholders in the region through a process of local development. We call together everybody and institute the Forum for Local Community Development to combat violence and the use of drugs through the sustainable development of the region.

Sports and culture serve as the mobilizing elements for the youth. Through community competitions, we gather young people to discuss the problem of drug use and violence, which creates visibility for the issue and shows that the practice of sport is incompatible with the use of drugs. At the same time during the discussions and competitions we explore with the young people what they need to move away from drugs and violence, including all the issues they raise such as work and income, leisure, training, social assistance, etc. The issues are passed on to the Forum for Local Community Development, where the public sector, companies and the community seek to address them, and in this way the problem is addressed with everyone's participation.

This intervention model comes from the idea that violence and the use of drugs are social problems that must be fought with lasting social activities and with the involvement of all stakeholders (government, business and society) that operate in the region.

The sports used are: Street basketball, street soccer (football), volleyball, break dancing, among others, with the athletes from the community itself. And the sports work to mobilize the youth.

I hope I have contributed to a better understanding of Craques (Aces) Versus CracK and I am available for further information.

Warm greetings,

Johnson Sales-Institutional Director of MH2O of Brazil and Ashoka Social Entrepreneurs Fellow.
