good to see you on changemakers! I find that bit about how you grew out of a "let´s come up with a different kind of cheerleading" idea quite interesting. In some sports and countries, cheerleading is one of the most visible forms of dancing performance out there. Now that I read your entry, I think it´s a shame that not more work is being done to take it out of its little corner and give it a new twist. I´d like to hear more about how the cheerleading background played into the beginning of Dimension Dance. What did you come up with for that rugby team? Did they like it? Were you successful in attracting more families? Btw, are there any cheerleading projects on changemakers yet? I know that DKJS from Germany is around with "Girls´Strength", which has a cheerleading done right project as one of their sub-programs:
We were very successful in offering the rugby club what they were desperatley looking for. We offered a professional image with young children from the age of 5 to 21. Most of these kids have never performed in front of an audience before, let alone in front of 10000 plus people including coverage on Sky TV.
The main rugby team however were also doing extremely well which may have also influenced the increasing gate figures.
We treated our dance group with respect and spent a lot of time developing them as individuals. We encouraged them to go that one step further by experimenting with their choreography. We mixed modern jazz with hip hop and break dancing. All this went down very well with the home crowd and received mixed views from the away crowds.

I am wondering if and how you guys may have used video to accomplish some of your objectives/ increase your scale. The Nike Dance Clash that just took place in the UK used youtube video submissions on Bebo to showcase the dance talents of thousands of young people. It occurred to me that this creating an online platform or utilizing online social networking sites linked to dance could be a way to expand your audience. I was also thinking that you could use video/youtube as a way of teaching more young people various moves - post them on the web to practice and then
I guess there is an issue of access to videos, but these days that is becoming less and less of an obstacle. Did you see the entry on video to fuel the sport for change movement? It might be of interest for this reason.
We are actually going to announce (any day now..) a special prize for the best dance project coming out of the UK, so for this reason, I was particularly glad to see your project and to know that dance is part of the sport for a better world movement!
The cheerleading element peaked my interest as well partially because I am really done with the whole sexy cheerleader thing at male sporting events :-)

thanks for the cheerleading answer :). Ziba´s point about sport and film is a good one, I think. It´s not only good for expanding the reach, but may also be part of the actual teaching/program experience. I´ve comment on that at another dance project from the uk:
