What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence?

Empowering young girls through initiation of garbage collections through soccer ball juggling training sessions to generate support to orphans educational needs and HIV/AIDS education.

Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field?

This project idea is to help the lives of 250 girl-child soccer champs through daily garbage collections at the Kisumu city slum of Manyatta while also displaying soccer skills. The program will target neighbors to pay a nominal fee to have their plots cleared by the girls after school, prior to soccer practice. The total amount raised monthly will go towards supporting their own education costs and basic needs. At the fields, after garbage collections, soccer practices takes places at the teams’ playing grounds and for those in attendance, topical HIV/AIDS messages, health education, and other services sacrena sporting organization offers to the community shall be offered freely to the youths and other soccer playing community members each day. This shall target 200 people daily directly with positive messages. School time shall be mandatory for teens participating in this project, so collection and practice time is limited 1.5 hours after which, they must return home for homework

What are the existing barriers, the biggest problem, your innovation is hoping to address/change?

Delayed access to interested partners to help support this piloted project. Innovative funding is limited and regulations may limit funding to do this work. The community’s high expectations, dependency syndrome from the beneficiaries and the parents/guardians.

Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing?

Through training sessions and voluntarily garbage collections after schools hours. The community members shall also participate in positioning the garbage in the strategic areas for easy access.

How do you plan to grow your innovation?

The FOCUS project will first start within the slums of Manyatta in Kisumiu. In the first 6 months as a pilot project then it shall be shared with other members as a best practice to be rolled out to other 4 other slums in the implementing organization (SACRENA) shall have identified the Success, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats Kisumu. The FOCUS project shall help sustain girls who play soccer that lack school fees to get down to their own community to pull existing resources via garbage collection to help met some of their own school fees and basic needs (e.g. sanitary pads) and address crosscutting issues as a vulnerable group. The strength of this project shall rely on the community good will, members participations and the counselors volunteer at sacrena sporting organization and the entire community response their own problems and encourage new talented and skills to girl-child participation in soccer sport

How many people have you served directly?

Directly we have served 250- girl child through food and entire manyatta community reached with HIV services and topical messages as result of sports. But through many programs Sacrena is implementing rather than this FOCUS: reached people includes People with HIV, ophans, widows, religious leaders, the physically challenged and the grandmothers whose total number cannot be mentioned.

How many people have you served indirectly?

We have yet to measure this.

Please list any other measures reflective of the impact of your innovation?

Number of the community members reached by the garbage collections Girls Sports Ambassadors and HIV topical messages.
-Number of the Soccer Trainings held weekly and the plots targeting for service in mentioned days, and trainings held on waste management.
-Number of community persons reached by the sports soccer skills and cleanups and those who gained /benefits out of it.
-Number of tournaments held during the period of the proposal.
-Number of girl child benefiting from the garbage collection

What are the main barriers to creating or achieving your impact?

Inadequate resources or lack of accessing these grants. More so if hard regulations from well -wishers are over demanding and perhaps high expectations that we cannot offer contrary to our expectations and impacts. Timing of the disbursements can also daily to day implementations and can create a barrier the impact. The units estimated can also differ interfering by the budget

How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)?

o We shall sustain the project through the innovative second project of Poultry keeping that Sacrena have already also through Garbage Collection Units the total monthly 20% of the collections to sustain the group., the organization through the community ambassadors will charge the residents

o Sustainability through already trained community sports ambassadors in waste management skills in which includes components of recycling waste, which shall be used to increase their incomes.
o Sacrena has already popularized the concept of kitchen garden: vegetables and other garden produce has been grown and sold to local markets. It will continue to support and sustain the target beneficiaries.

If known, provide information on your finances and organization.

The information has been done is that we have procedures for our members enrolments fee of 50 US cents. This through our efforts in tackling problems we met global giving during the launch of Sports for Social Change in Nairobi-Kenya. Through global giving the project currently raising more than 200,000 USD to support 250 orphans with basic education, medication, food and shelter. Sacrena sporting is also a member of the Sports for Social Change.Sacrena also is in the lists of the www.sport4change.com as a grassroots sports body in Kenya. The FOCUS project shall also will be sustained through 10% out the funds raised from the www.sport4change.com and www.globalgiving.com/1713

What is the potential demand for your innovation?

The community members that will be reached are targeted 25,000 people participating directly piloted within Manyatta slums then it will be rolled out to other areas of Sacrena sporting coverage areas. The project demand that the identified Volunteers and staffs will be motivated but not them employed except agreed by our donors. They shall put 100% of their time in the FOCUS project

What are the main barriers to financial sustainability?

Reason of barriers to finance sustability at Sacrena sporting is that we haven’t have donors who interest. The cash coming in since our start is not there because lack information, resources and good access linkages for the partners to help.
