i am impressed with your idea. We all know about the suffering that children in Kashmir go through due to militancy and violence. Sport is indeed a great way to heal wounds and break barriers of race and religion.
Working in those circumstances must be really challenging!
I also work on a sports based program in New Delhi called 'Goal: Reaching New Heights' and have also submitted an entry in this competition. We use netball which is quite similar to basket ball. Hope we get a chance to meet and exchange ideas.
Great job! What a fantastic idea! Sports have the power to transcend circumstance. I can't even imagine what the children you are serving, the CHINAR kids, have been through. What I do know is that having the refuge both psychologically and physically provided by your program is invaluable. Basketball is an international language. I wish you the best in getting the funding you need to make your program work. I remember many "healing" days out on the basketball court. I was fortunate to have been able to be a part of wonderful programs growing up. You are making such a difference. I am so impressed.

Congratulations on starting this project and thanks for sharing it with us on changemakers.
Using sport in conflict and post-conflict areas is slowly gaining more attention and there a number of resources that might be useful to you as you continue to develop the psychosocial aspects of your programme.
The International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education have a competition entry on changemakers also which relates to your programme. They have just developed a training seminar for professionals just like you who are interested in using sport as a tool in post-disaster intervention.
There is a Handbook on Sport and Physical Activity in Post-Disaster Intervention which is available through their website. Here is the link for you - http://www.icsspe.org/index.php?m=12&wert=4000
A second training seminar will be held in November in 2008 and you or some of your colleagues might be interested in attending. Keep an eye on the website for the latest information www icsspe.org
I'd be interested to hear some more about how you plan to measure the psychosocial outsomes of your basketball program. Have you already seen significant changes in the children who have participated?
I wish you every success as you grow your program.
Best regards,
