Hi Olivier,

Thanks for sharing this project with Changemakers. It's interesting to hear about some of these experiences of Sport Sans Frontieres creating social change for women in Afghanistan.

You might be interested in the entry from the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE) and their new seminar on Sport in Post-Disaster Intervention. It might be some relevant training that a representative from your organisation might be able to attend and share some of your experiences. It's designed to train professional working in post-disaster settings to develop psychosocial sport programmes that help people overcome trauma associated with a disaster. The next seminar will be held in Berlin, Germany in November 2008 and keep an eye out on their website for more details www.icsspe.org

Providing body experiences and introductions to different movements is really important for people, such as those in your programme, that have had limited exposure to physical activity. Some people think it's as easy as turning up with a volleyball and expect that people will know the basic movement patterns required to hit a ball. Dealing with emotions is another important aspect of sport in post-disaster intervention and sport can be a really useful way to encourage women to share their feelings and frustrations in a safe and supportive environment.

Congratulations on this initiative and I imagine your organisation has overcome many barriers to get this project up and running.

Hope to see you in November in Berlin!

Jackie

Salut Olivier!
I really enjoyed reading your entry and think that both SAS and my organization, Women Win, share a common vision and strategy for empowering women and girls. I founded Women Win last year and since then we have funded several projects very similar to Women Garden in Afghanistan. Please visit our entry on Changemakers at I think it would be great for us to connect and share experiences.

I am also interested in hearing more about how you are going about monitoring and evaluation. What tools are you using to make your case that sport is empowering girls and giving them the instruments to tackle their problems? Also, how are you dealing with parents and other possible barriers?
Thanks in advance for responding.
Warmly,
Astrid Aafjes
