Describe Your Idea
Giving young people in Hamburg St. Pauli a chance to play football, initiate integrative processes and learn social skills.
Innovation
What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence?
Giving young people in Hamburg St. Pauli a chance to play football, initiate integrative processes and learn social skills.
Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field?
Our program is free and we don't put pressure to perform on the boys and girls. Attendance is free of charge and free fruits are provided after training.
What are the existing barriers, the biggest problem, your innovation is hoping to address/change?
There is a gap between achievement-oriented sports clubs and youth that only need time and space to interact with others. St. Pauli is a quarter of Hamburg, Germany's second-biggest city, and it´s the district with the most tourist. There is a lot of money "going through" St. Pauli, but very few of the people living here actually participate from it. We try to reclaim space for the local youth. The main problem is money - we are 100% donation-based.
Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing?
We offer three training slots every week. We try to work our public-relations. And, of course, we try to raise money to pay the coaches and to pay for the fruits. On top we try to arrange special projects with the kids, e.g. we visit other social soccer projects and go to matches of FC St. Pauli.
How do you plan to grow your innovation?
We are investing more and more time in campaigning and offer more training-sessions. We just started a special girls-only training one year ago, and we offer training for younger children (5-8y) now.
The goal is to transfer the children to other clubs after a while, if they want. If not, they can stay with us.
Impact
Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact.
Integrating the many cultures living in St. Pauli and keeping the multicultural touch of our quarter.
What impact has your innovation had to date/or what is your intended impact? Exactly who are the beneficiaries?
We already manage to help many young players, boys and girls, to play for soccer clubs now. We help the kids with shoes and clothes we collect from donations. We hope that many young people see our project as a little help in their daily life to win spaces in their city, spend quality leisure-time and have fun in an often not-funny world. The beneficiaries are all children and youth of our district, who are mostly coming from poor families and having a migration background.
How many people have you served directly?
There are about 100 Kids coming to all of our training sessions during the week. The program has been running for about 5 years now, so it may have been 250 altogether.
How many people have you served indirectly?
We inform many people with our P.R. actions, e.g. fliers and information during the games of FC St. Pauli, posters across town, informative meetings at schools, awards we won, press publications and so on. The number of people must be in the thousands.
Please list any other measures reflective of the impact of your innovation?
The Kiezkick-project is well known in St. Pauli and many supporters know about it, so we get a lot of questions, how people can help us, e.g. people ask, if we need more sports-shoes for the kids, bands ask, if they can do benefit gigs, etc. The participants learn about social life, getting along with each other, that people care about them. They learn to respect each other and treat each other respectfully and fair.
What are the main barriers to creating or achieving your impact?
The main problem is the lack of money. We need money for the coaches that run the training sessions, for the clothes (shoes and shirts), footballs and training-related things, for the fruits and water we give to the participants, and for the special action-days.Also it is difficult to get training times on the pitches and in the gym sometimes.
This Entry is about (Issues)
Sustainability
How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)?
We operate on a 100% donation basis. The project started with a benefit game between FC St. Pauli and a team of musicians and actors (New Model Army, die Ärzte, Jürgen Vogel, Peter Lohmeyer...). We collect money on a regular basis. We also get donations once in while. We gained some swards like the "Budnianer-Hilfe Preis" and the "Botschafter der Toleranz". We get water for free in the summer from the supporters-department of FC St. Pauli (AFM). The project-coordinator is getting payed as an employee of the Fanladen St. Pauli.
If known, provide information on your finances and organization.
The annual budget is between 12.000 and 15.000 Euro. We don't generate any revenues. There is one part-time project coordinator, one co-coordinator on a freelancer-basis, seven coaches on a freelancer basis and one volunteer.
What is the potential demand for your innovation?
The potential demand is high. Our program is well known as a "best-practice"-project and is useful for every town, quarter or village with a number of youth with immigrant background. It helps to get kids off the street, and to counter prejudice and xenophobia.
What are the main barriers to financial sustainability?
As said above, we are in need of about 12-15 thousand Euro each year and we are under constant pressure to collect that amount of money. The best thing that could happen to the project would be a financial partner, like a big company, who guarantees a huge amount of the money needed.
The Story
What is the origin of this innovation? Tell us your story.
A few years ago, some supporters of FC St. Pauli saw the need of doing something for the kids in St. Pauli. After a few months and contacts with media agencies and a film production office, the benefit-game took place and we raised about 30.000 Euro to start the project. The project grew bigger and we started splitting the group into young, middle and older kids. We also introduced a training class only for girls and had to split this, too, after a while.
Please provide a personal bio. Note this may be used in Changemakers marketing material.
I have studied educational science and started to work in the Fanladen St. Pauli in 2001, first as a volunteer, later as a freelancer, now I´m an employee. I was born in St. Pauli myself and lived in the quarter the first years of my life. I attend games of FC St. Pauli since the end of the 1980ies and I feel very connected to St. Pauli.
