What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence?

Using Sport to change people’s lives.

Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field?

What makes this project unique is that no AIDS Hospice that we donate to receives money in the form cash, but we get the tools to be able to do more for them. Also, none of the funds raised go towards any administration costs, thus making sure that all the funds raised, go to the intended cause and the people who need them most, People Living With HIV and AIDS.

What are the existing barriers, the biggest problem, your innovation is hoping to address/change?

We are working to eradicate the spread of HIV, abolish the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS, and inform the people of South Africa about HIV/AIDS & the various positive options to lead a health life regardless of HIV status. We are spreading love and acceptance of People Living with HIV/AIDS. If people are well informed, they make informed decisions about their lives. Our biggest barriers are not having enough funds to spread our message.

Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing?

We raise funds through out the year from different South African Corporations. We walk the distance between two provinces to deliver these funds to the selected homes: The sport heroes walk everyday spreading the above message. When we arrive in each and every town, we hold sport clinics of different sporting codes, afterwards we have motivational talks with the youths and the exchange of ideas by answering all types and sort of questions that will help them grow. At the end of the day we have HIV/AIDS talks in the said town’s community hall (City Hall or Town Hall) where we address adults regarding HIV/AIDS. We also by sporting equipment for the communities to make sure that the youth participate in sport in the area.

How do you plan to grow your innovation?

We would like to invite people like Magic Johnson to come and walk with us one year, so that the impact of our message can be felt far. We are also planning to help and teach the hospices how to manage their hospices as a business entity that will generate income for them so that they are independent. This in turn can also provide employment and income for the local people. We are planning to help those who are starting up by setting them up and constant monitoring them to make sure that they register their organizations, opening of bank accounts, transferring of skills to make sure that their communication with the world is improved, in turn they will be able to stand alone and run with their organizations.

How many people have you served directly?

We serve an entire Province each time we embark on our journey. Directly we impact about 500 000 thousand people in a town each time we interact with people,

How many people have you served indirectly?

indirectly we impact about 1 000 000,00 people.

Sustainability

How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)?

We ask government for administration costs, and we fund raise through corporate South Africa, for the funds to be donated to the HIV Hospices. We also urge South African public, those who can afford to donate, to date a minimum of R10 to the project

If known, provide information on your finances and organization.

• Annual budget: Required budget is R4.5 Million
• Annual revenue generated: Depends from year to year.
• Number of staff 3 part-time, no volunteers):

What is the potential demand for your innovation?

The demand is huge as more and more people are infected with HIV and AIDS in South Africa, and hope gives a reason to carry on, so we carry on giving hope to millions of people.

What are the main barriers to financial sustainability?

Not raising enough funds to start with, because we do not have permanent employees working on the project, therefore the part time staff only work certain hours and only for six months in the later part of the year. If we at least had 3 full time staff employed we can rock South Africa to the sky with our project.

The Story

What is the origin of this innovation? Tell us your story.

I first got the idea after watching Oprah, when she was doing the “use Your life” series. She said we all have something to offer and that we do not all have to have money to help. She said based on what we each do, in our jobs or every day lives, we can help the next person, and she was urging people to do something to help others and not be selfish and engrossed in our individual worlds. This struck a cord in me, that I am sure the way to have a fulfilling life is by being involved in other people’s lives in a very positive way. I then realized that with the kind of work that I do and with the profile that I have, I can use it for the better good. So I did some research and started the project. I asked a few South African Sporting personalities to help me and they did and we have been helping communities since 2002.
