What is the primary problem your venture is trying to address and how are you addressing it (or planning to address it)?

The project started in 1996, in an event for teenagers called EMA (from the Portuguese “Encontro Municipal de Adolescentes”, which means “Municipal Teenagers Gathering”), which was the trigger for the teenagers to feel free about having a space in where they could chat about teenage.
In 1997, 16 teenagers started gathering in a school, which has provided the space where they gathered by the weekends. Some other times they gathered at the central public square, at the bandstand, or at the coordinator's house. After somtime they started monitoring workshops at schools.
These teenagers wanted something else, a space where they could chat everyday, and then they would have a space so that other teenagers could join the workshops. Then came the dream: “House of the Teen”.
In year 2000, in a lent house, the workshops took place from mondays to fridays, and some also on saturdays.
In 2005, we acquired our own home base, with the assistance of Fundação Prada, Fundação Itaú Social and Itaú/Unicef, and bingo sessions, bazaars and dinners promoted by Grupo TUMM.
And it in this space that the majority of the workshops occur, as sports and swimming workshops occur in the athletic facilities.
All the workshops happen in periods complementary of the school attendance time.
This project, for the second time, has got into the 30 national finalists to the Prêmio Itaú/Unicef contest. The last one ocurred in 2007.

The teenagers had no space where they could chat about their teenage topics, and this way the 16 teenagers started their actions around the city, advertising in newspapers, local TV, at schools.
They got the house for promotion and continued th workshops at schools.
This year will be the XII edition of the EMA Municipal Teenagers Gathering, space for chatting and promoting activities.
Since 2001, occurs the MIA (from the Portuguese “Mobilização Interativa de Adolescentes”, which means “Interactive Teenagers Mobilization”. This year will be the 8th edition, which happens on Dec 1st, World AIDS Day.

Project Description

Preparation of the spreading teenager: the teenager on the workshops and the appropriation of the “House of the Teen” and its events.

Unique and different

The difference is the teen-to-teen methodology, young-to-teen and educator to teen and young, beeing participative.
Other difference is that the EMA and MIA events are prepared, from the theme of the event to the physical space organization, by the teens and young that attend to the House of the Teen.

Project plan

In these 6 months:
? There will be the EMA and MIA events preparation
? Workshops at the House of the Teen
? Workshops at schools

Partnerships

The pedagogical coordinator, Maria Antonieta (Tuni), and the president of the institution, Ieda, who is always by the young monitors providing orientation.
We have team meetings (to check the problems and search for solutions) and text-reading meetings, in which texts we review our activities.

Impact

Impact

Active teenagers and young in the city: monitoring the UBS (Basic Health Unit), schools and other places.

Effectiveness

House of the Teen project has already served 11,000 people (considering 11 years of existance of TUMM and 8 years of the House of the Teen project). The innovation bennefits teenagers and youth.

How do you engage and impact the community?

How do you measure this impact?

By discrete events, as the EMAs, the schools open their space to make these events, mobilizations, workshops at schools, partnerships with some city departments (health, culture, education and sports), among others. The population gets involved helping on the organization of the space, infra-structure, cleaning and cooking.
The impact is measured by the interaction and systematization of the results achieved, and the number of teenagers targeted in the activities that take place outside the House of the Teen and work branches. Also, we measure the impact by the opening we can get by the city departments for improvement of the teenager and young life quality, in health, in respect to their rights, and control of public policies and also by the reports of the affected people (family members, children, teenagers), when they report what has changed, the things they could improve in their homes and the improvement of the space in which they are inserted (home, school, leisure places.

Obstacles

To open space for new teenagers, to assume as young and to live with the adults that will need to be hired to make the managerial work so that we don't forget the project's objectives, the teenagers initiative respecting the differences, but guaranteeing equity.

Financing source

(or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)

The House of the Teen project has as associated partners the people in the city.
Projects approved by the CMDCA.
For the project to continue in the comming years we go to the schools and promote the space. When they arrive and find a space with several workshops, they chose whichever they want. At Wednesdays the “Spreading Teenager Formation” workshops occur, and the interested ones start after sometimes, to give the workshops along with a monitor, in order to accumulate experience.
Then they start to give the workshops in the House, at schools, on events, etc.

Aside from financial sustainability, how do you plan to grow and sustain your project?

Other non finance needs

Permanent qualification, which has been done by means of the young belonging to the institution, coodinators, the institution president.
Pedagogical material for theoretic foundation of our actions, because today we already have the main material for our job.
Promoting the project and mainly partnerships with schools (we have that already) so that, by means of the workshops, the teenagers start to get interested by becoming a volunteer as a means of learning, improving the knowledge and becoming a professional, because here we learn to do everything and watch several other volunteers, allowing us to chose our future profession.

The Story

Motivation

My name is Daniele de Fátima Massaro, 20 years, college candidate, recycled paper workshops (among others) monitor.
I started in this project because my sisters have participated in it. In the beginning I was a bit shy, I used to go to the House to play Checkers.
Later I started to take part in the workshops, and among others I attended to the spreading teenager formation, and then I started giving workshops at schools.
During 2 years I took part only in some events, EMA and MIA, because I changed to another school and was studying to go to college, and I still didn't manage to pass the test, and last year I came back to the project where I monitor the workshops in general, mainly the recycled paper one.

Awards

Yes. I've been nominated to assume the TUMM secretary role last year. But the greatest reward comes when the teenagers really want to be in the project and they start to manage the space and the workshops. This is priceless.

Broader context

This project gives the opportunity for the teenager to get to know himself/herself, knowledge about the other and about the world. Here we learn values that we take to our personal and professional lives. This goes along, when we know ourselves (our space and the other's) we see the values that make us stronger and this increases my social transformation to the life.

Ongoing

This enterprise has to be continued by the teenagers in the city, since the first group (of 16) has left this space so that I could learn the values.
These teenagers will have new allies that will be the youth of today.
