What is the primary problem your venture is trying to address and how are you addressing it (or planning to address it)?

My project’s goal is the environmental awareness of communities in rural settlement areas, especially the Muxuré Velho settlement, in the City of Quixeramobim. I will work more specifically with youngsters, who have an important mobilisation role in society, in the search for a better relationship between the community and the (semi-arid) environment where they live.

Project Description

To promote, amongst the youth and the community, through theoretic and practical workshops, the importance of preserving the environment and of living in peace with the semi-arid setting.

Unique and different

We are current living in an “SOS Planet” era. This indicates, therefore, that either we take care of the planet today or tomorrow will not be possible. In light of that and of the responsibility in considering tomorrow today, I understand this project is not necessarily innovative, but something of conscious for the society, especially for the Brazilian semi-arid region. It is different because it is in a situation where very little is done for the semi-arid environment to this end, to preserve our forests and animals. The problem in the future will not only be the melting down of glaciers that will lead coastal city dwellers to the countryside, but also the warming of areas that have already been suffering form it for a long time, the dry areas that suffer from deforestation, wildfires and lack of water.

Project plan

1 – Promote brainstorming sessions to allow youngsters in the communities to articulate their views, with visits to schools, Church, neighbours’ associations, etc. 2 – Promote the first theoretic workshops where the participants will make an environmental diagnosis of the community and verify what environmental problems experienced affect them more directly. 3. Promotion of (field) practical workshops, after the problems are identified, we will visit the settlement and verify the priority order of the environmental problems detected. 4 Practical workshops – following the field workshops and the awareness of the community’s environmental problems, we will develop with the youngsters actions to try to address these problems. 5. Development of the practical activities to remedy the environmental problems identified by the youngsters, for example: replanting of species of native flora, this action can be made in association with state and municipal environmental organisms. 6 – Promotion of the results of the project and discussion rounds with the community to present the solutions found by the youngsters for a better semi-arid ecosystem for the settlement

Partnerships

Brazilian Institute for the Environment (IBAMA), State Secretariat for the Environment (SEMACE). Dom Helder Camara Project. Centre for the Protection of Human Rights – Antonio Conselheiro. Municipal Government of Quixeramobim. Catavento Comunicacao e Educacao Ambiental (NGO). The partnerships will take place through links with the Community Association of the settlement, as well as with the youngsters by means of workshops.
We’ll be strengthening the role of these entities towards social responsibility and respect for the environment.

Impact

Impact

Better awareness within the community about the environmental problems and therefore a general social improvement.

Effectiveness

The community as a whole, especially the youth, so that the latter can start to appreciate the environment where they live and be critical and conscious of their role in society in the future.

How do you engage the community and how does it respond to your project? (500 characters)
The project focuses on teenagers. But the goal is that the community can gain awareness through these youngsters.

How do you engage and impact the community?

The project focuses on teenagers. But the goal is that the community can gain awareness through these youngsters.

How do you measure this impact?

The impact of this project in the community should have great repercussion, because the ecosystem of the semi-arid region is being increasingly destroyed, and the community in general has not yet woken up to the need to preserve it.

Obstacles

Taking the knowledge and practices developed by these youngsters, through contextual education, to all other settlements in Quixeramobim. In addition to that, another way to increase the impact of this project is by strengthening the activities targeted at the youth by fostering critical thinking and a better awareness of their role in society.

The Story

Motivation

Because I have lived more than 20 years of my life in a rural settlement zone situated in the Brazilian semi-arid region, and have always felt closely the effects of destruction, wildfires and global warming that are already a reality in the semi-arid region of Ceará, I feel obliged to develop something that will allow today’s children and youngsters to build a new semi-arid region. For this region not to turn into a deforested, dry, unproductive one. But rather for fruits that can feed the soul of each of those who search in the soil their dreams and wishes for a better life to flourish amongst thorns.
