What is the likely impact of your idea? (150 words max)

-To strengthen Brazil-U.S. relations by linking artists with NGOs that facilitate programs that positively impact the Favelas in Rio. These artists have agreed to invest time and energy in helping to build a cultural bridge for programs that will be ongoing and sustainable.
-To provide employment opportunities for Brazilian artists to come to the US.
-To encourage volunteerism amongst Americans who may not have visited the favelas in Rio.
-To brand this idea to other international cities who experience similar challenges, to facilitate volunteers, financial and in-kind support for those global communities.

Why is promoting global travel and engagement important? What makes your idea innovative? (200 words max)

-Global travel and engagement with global communities gives us the opportunity to step outside of our every day environments. In doing so, travel forces us to look at the world around us with open eyes. Our experiences while traveling are often varied, but they usually make us aware of things we never thought of before, or see things that we never imagined existed. In this way, travel becomes a way for us to understand ourselves better, so that we can (hopefully) accept and understand others.

What would it take to launch or spread your idea? How much would it cost to make your idea a reality? (150 words max)

-It takes passion, clarity, focus, determination, dedication and support to spread our idea.

-Without sponsorship from outside organizations and companies, it will take approximately $250K to produce workshops, provide resources, and cover all of the travel expenses for our event in Rio. To host similar events next year, the cost varies depending on the location (we have begun initial pre-production for Ottowa, Native American Reservations, and Capetown, S. Africa and to host international artist workshops in America for 2010).

Describe your work as a social innovator (150 words max)

-We are amassing an amazing group of supporters from the non-profit and for-profit industries, some of which have pledged resources in terms of in kind donations to provide tangible resources to our local international organizations, given the economic times.

-We are working with educators, artists, and workshop facilitators to develop curriculum that can be used for our events and seminars around the world. We believe that Hip Hop has historically been used as a voice for the unheard- from Gaza to Rio to Capetown. Linking these international artists with US artists and celebrities that would like to be invested in partnering with us to become a change maker- through artist expression, sports, and ultimately health and wellness, will give underprivileged young people the skills and examples they need to create their own opportunities for a meaningful and healthful life.
