What is the likely impact of your idea? (150 words max)
Widespread travel can make this world a friendlier and more tolerant place. To understand the world outside yourself, you must encounter it face-to-face. To see life through other people's eyes, you must walk in their footsteps. Confronting the outside world demystifies the fears that many harbor about people who are different from them, breaking down barriers and revealing that people all over the planet really are the same. Friendly Planet Travel aims to show its travelers what it's like to live in the far reaching corners of the world, so they can take their experiences with them to wherever they call home. We hope they will remember that the people they met are just different and not to be feared. We hope they will have made friends, and we don't usually wage war with friends.
Why is promoting global travel and engagement important? What makes your idea innovative? (200 words max)
As our world grows smaller, global travel becomes even more important. It is the absolute best way for people to appreciate different cultures and open their eyes to the issues people face in countries other than their own. Our idea is innovative because instead of making exotic travel an exclusive experience, only realistic for the wealthy, we make it a reality for a much larger group. If you’re lucky enough to have the discretionary income that might let you travel to the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, or spend a week at the beach, you can now also afford to see places like Vietnam, Dubai, or Greece, and treat yourself to an experience that you might never have imagined, including making new friends in unlikely places.

Describe your work as a social innovator (150 words max)
We noticed when taking our groups to the countryside in Cambodia, that surrounding the amazing temples and natural beauty of the country, some people live in horrific poverty. A major problem is the lack of clean water. For a family to have clean water is a matter of about $200, the cost to dig a well. Friendly Planet began funding wells in Cambodia several years ago, and made sure that our groups had a chance to pass by villages where they were dug. Once the guide told the story of the wells to our groups, they began funding new wells immediaty. In that very informal way, we’ve already funded several hundred wells, valued at more than $40,000. Without the opportunity to step outside their own comfort zones, these people would never have had their eyes opened to how easy it is to make such a huge difference in the world.
